James Gunn has confirmed that Superman will be doing some more shooting, but he's making it clear he does not consider this to be reshoots.
Over the weekend, Gunn was asked if there was any truth to the news from The Hollywood Reporter that he would be doing "a few days of additional shooting" on Superman. Gunn took to his Threads account to address this, saying, "Sort of. Not a few days. We’re doing a day and a half of pickup shots. No scenes. No reshoots. Just a handful of individual shots to enhance the film."
This is an important clarification for Gunn as he famously tries to avoid reshoots. He took to social media in Aug. to address this following the film wrapping recently wrapping principal photography. At the time he addressed how much effort reshoots take by saying: "I don't know. I've done a total of one day of reshoots on my past two films combined."
Reshoots have become a very common activity on big-budget films, so it's surprising to hear a director say they have done so few of them. Gunn was asked what he attributed to this, and he gave a checklist of why he thought this was so.
- Over-prepare
- Don't start shooting until I have a finished script my whole team is happy with
- Hire actors and department heads I know can do their jobs
- Surround myself with people who will challenge me and not just yes-sir everything
- Ask myself daily - are there any small imperfections in the script or what we're shooting that might end up feeling like huge imperfections when we cut the film together?
- 1 and 2 again!
The cast of Superman is set to include David Corenswet as Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. They will all be joined by Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, and María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer.
Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
