David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan cast as Superman and Lois Lane in “Superman: Legacy”

After months of speculation and countless rumors, James Gunn has finally cast his Clark Kent and Lois Lane: David Corenswet (Pearl) and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), respectively.

In recent weeks, rumors have swirled that the pair were competing for the roles alongside other hopefuls such as Nicholas Hoult and Emma Mackey, with Corenswet and Brosnahan officially announced as the film’s leads. Along with the cast of Creature Commandos, this is the first big casting announcement for the new direction of DC Studios, spearheaded by writer and director James Gunn, who along with producer Peter Safran is in charge of the next phase of films based on DC Comics characters.

While it’s not known at this time which other characters will appear in Superman: Legacy, actors such as Hoult and brothers Alexander and Bill Skarsgård are rumored to be in the running for the role of Lex Luthor. The film itself is described by Gunn as being a focus on Superman as “the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way,” with the Man of Steel trying to balance “his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.”

Louis Lane casting is great, she was incredible in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, but I don't know who the guy is at all. Can't really see him as a better fit than Henry Cavill, but if anything I have to give it to James Gunn that he is great at casting. So I guess we'll see.

Seems like a discount Henry Cavill... looks like him, but less "masculine" & mature. He may be taller, but he doesn't have Cavill's frame & I doubt he'll be anywhere near as big as Cavill ever was, especially with their plans to shoot in a few months.
All he has on Henry is his age (and a killer hairline, lol). He's ten years younger. Tbh, I don't much care about that anymore. Chadwick Boseman was 40+ by the time Black Panther came out I think. Henry looks great for his age...
Granted, a full reboot & complete distancing from the old DCEU was needed. Seems like David was a popular fan-cast bc of his looks. Have not seen him do anything of note. So acting/skill wise, who freaking knows?

  The problem with Cavill - aside from being too emblematic of Zack Snyder's take on DC - is his wooden acting. Leading man looks, bit part talent...
  Rachel Brosnahan is incredible, though; natural comedic timing and has dramatic chops. She, almost all by herself, makes this hard for me to ignore, even though I wish it was just a standalone trilogy instead of the launch of new shared universe BS.

    I know a lot of ppl call Cavill "wooden" & I think there is "some" truth to that but I also think that he was never given the opportunity to shine.
    It's very much possible that David is the better actor or has more acting potential... but looks wise, he's not Cavill. David's got the fase but he doesn't have the frame. But that's okay I suppose if he works as hard as he can. Even fase wise, he doesn't have the "grit" or maturity that Cavill has & he never will. He has that more boyish look to him which definitely fits a younger Clark I suppose but not it's weird for a seasoned Superman. I kinda have the same issue with Rob as Batman btw. Yea he has the jawline, but he will forever have that youthful boyish look even though he's almost 40.
    I don't know anything about Rachel but I'm glad ppl here seem to be excited about her casting. I don't think we've ever really gotten a good Lois Lane. Maybe in the OG Superman movies but I haven't seen them in so long (and truth be told I'm not very nostalgic about those movies) so I couldn't say.
    Superman Returns Lois was awful & I LOOOOOOVE Amy Adams as an actress & IRL she's an absolute sweetheart but she was just miscast as Lois.

      I've never seen David Corenswet in anything that I'm aware of, off-hand. I've seen Henry Cavill in a lot of movies and on TV, though, and I think while he has great screen presence, he's not naturalistic in his roles. He kinda cycles through the same facial expressions, the same body language, and always has a slightly rote delivery. He had good presence as Superman. I think it was within his wheelhouse, it ain't King Lear, but he's also just the entire face of what's being rebooted.
      I think Kidder was great, and still the standard, even though many have played Lois. Kidder embodied her. The personality seemed genuine. Everyone sense knows Lois is this feisty, hardball reporter, so they deliver their dialogue accordingly, but Kidder really seemed like that's her personality. She's brash, she's reckless, she's ballsy. She's also witty. Brosnahan has great comedic timing, but she can be intense, too. I feel like if an actress can make you laugh, she can make you feel anything. In that way, she reminds me of Kidder.

      Watch The Marvelous Mrs Maisel or at least clips of it. She is perfect in there and has a ton of personality, great comedic timing, charisma and awesome screen energy. She can hit comedy and emotion. She will probably overshadow Superman if the director uses her right and not just as a throwaway love interest.

      She's fine, she does well with what she gets, but she's nowhere near as good as Erica Durance or Teri Hatcher. Granted, she's a Lois as a mom, but she still isn't all that great in my opinion.

      Smallville's Erica Durance as Lois Lane is where it's at. She's the best in my book. Not hyped for Rachel. I'm sure she's a fine actress but she looks like a 1950s Lois and not a current, modern-day Lois. Hard to be thrilled about her casting. Corenswet as well looks like an old school Superman. But at least he has the right height and features for a decent looking Superman.

      I don't have a particular "look" for Lois in my mind... I guess I just imagine a brunette and I'm fine, which Rachel is. Lois is far more about character & Idk if Rachel can deliver but based on what others are saying, i'm thinking she will.

      I hear you. The character of Lois is absolutely key but I do believe in her having a certain definitive "look" where she's a redhead in some comics, a raven-haired beauty in other comics or a brunette. To me, in every timeframe (decade, era, etc) there's just a modern appeal to her. She cutting edge in look as well as her articles. She pops and sizzles. She puts no stock in her sexiness per se but she has that it girl quality about her, like she's a model that chose a different career path.
      She does what she does best as a journalist and writer, getting the top story with her ambiitious way about her, of course she can be snarky and witty - but that's more character... but her look is something I believe that is just as important as the character of her comic book source material.
      Margot Kidder succeeded in her time for sure in both areas, Teri Hatcher certainly did as well and Erica Durance was the best yet in my book. Crossing my fingers Brosnahan can follow suit because I don't see it and I certainly don't want a retro throwback appeal to a Superman and Lois of decades gone by.

      Corenswet most definitely has the frame. He's perfect Supes height at 6'4" and has plenty of time to bulk up. And the look of maturity is not something Gunn is looking for. He is looking for a more youthful Clark that hasn't been around too long at the Daily Planet. He'll grow into facial maturity in time, that will come.
      But have you not seen the workout regimens these actors undergo? Have you not seen the regimen Cavill went under with Mark Twight and Gym Jones? WB has their superhero boot camp where they whip up actors into shape for their roles and if nothing else, these guys will make sure Corenswet gets to the mass and bulk he needs to be Supes. That's a guaranteed prerequisite you can bank on that they will deliver. Corenswet has to fill out the suit they make for him beyond light padding.
      Personally, Corenswet wasn't my pick. I was down for Wolf Novogratz or Pierson Fode. They got the look, the height, the modern appeal, it's all there. But I don't wonder if Corenswet can look good as Superman. He will look good. Will he look great, not sure. I'm hopeful. Yes, he's not Cavill. Cavill's face was born for the role. Corenswet doesn't give off the same vibe. Compared to the others before him, I just hope he looks better than Routh as Superman. But the overall foundation to build on is there.

      Frame is not referring to height particularly. I was referring mostly to bone density & shoulder width. Cavill is much more genetically blessed in that regard.
      Cavill was in a much better place physically when he started his prep for MoS. David is nowhere near that. Cavill slowly built his body over YEARS... David only has a few months, it's just not the same thing.
      It's also not a guarantee. Look at Robert Pattinson... he barely put on any mass to play Batman.

      True about Pattinson but ultimately Reeves didn't care and Pattinson certainly didn't push himself or have the professional training. Corenswet will have no choice in the matter. And Corenswet has much more than a few months to build and bulk. Time is on his side but he doesn't have time to slack. I have no doubt he's been working on himself from the moment Gunn said he chose him.
      Worst case scenario is that Corenswet ends up looking like the build of Routh. But once again, with the professional training behind him with a leader like Mark Twight and the Gym Jones training supporting him, he is going to put on substantial mass. Those were tools that Routh didn't have when he did Superman Returns. Corenswet has a lot of beneficial tools for his gains.

  I feel like people have forgotten how skinny Cavill was when he was first cast as Superman. When he was first cast Cavill was only around 175 lb and gained 20 lb of muscle in 9-10 months. Corenswet looks to be about similar to where Cavill was 12 years ago and has at minimum 7 months before he'll begin shooting, and if SAG strikes it's very likely it'll be longer. He has the time to bulk up.

      And yes, I know he's not as cut as Cavill in that picture but here's the thing, he doesn't have to be. He's not skinny, he's just not ripped. And if there's one thing that we've seen time and time again it's that Hollywood knows how to transform people in record time. Chris Pratt. Kumail Nanjiani. Cavill going from 175 to 195 in 9 months. Hell, Christian Bale regularly goes through metamorphoses and went from stick thin for the Machinist to what he was for Batman Begins.

      Idk what's this supposed to prove? That's basically his Immortals physique, just with an awful suit that hides his definition. Granted he probably wasn't as lean as his peak Immortals shape in those pics here, but being less lean doesn't mean less muscle. What the guy above said about Henry gaining 20 pounds of muscle in 9 months is complete nonsense. That's literally impossible. He probably weighed around 175 pounds when he wasn't cut after Immortals & gained something like 10 pounds (and a few pounds of fat & water retention on top of that) in those 10 months. That's POSSIBLE, with the perfect diet & training.
      David however will not gain anywhere near enough to have the same build as Henry did, especially considering he has less time before shooting, he's taller therefore more difficult to fill out, he has a smaller frame (shoulders especially) & his baseline is a lot less impressive than Henry's.
      Don't get me wrong, I think David is not bad casting at all from the bits I've researched so far & he definitely has the face & height (and voice) & I wish him the best... And I also think he'll definitely be bigger once shooting begins (obviously). All I'm saying is that you can't compare what Henry did & achieved (physically) with what David "could achieve". That just doesn't make any sense.

      Chris Reeve went from 170 lb when he was cast to 212 lb when filming started. Cavill (as stated in MANY articles about his transformation) went from 175 to 195, Brandon Routh has said in interviews he put on 20-25 lb of muscle in 6 months while training for Superman Returns and then there are the below examples. He has ample time to get there.

      Bale is a bad example bc he had muscle memory.
      Kumail was on stupid amounts of steroids for a man of his age.
      Pratt mostly had to lose weight & it's possible he did gear too.
      It was part of Cavill's contract that he couldn't do PEDs bc WB wouldn't allow "Superman's" image to be tainted. I see no reason why that would change now. Without PEDs, he won't gain what he needs to to be truly believable as Superman.
      And no way in hell that Cavill gained 20 pounds of tissue in 9 months. That's humanly impossible. He probably gained around 10 pounds of pure muscle & a few pounds of fat/water on top of that.

      Sure he won't look like Cavill but i don't think its required, Cavill clearly likes working out and keeping up that look. Tyler Hoechlin isn't anywhere near Cavill's size yet he still looks fine and honesty after the last season of S&L he may be my favourite Superman. David i think will put on enough muscle to look the part he just won't look massive, say what you will about Gunn but his casting is always great in my opinion and he's good at getting actors looking the part, i mean look at Chris Pratt prior to Starlord.

A 6’4” Superman with steel jaw, full head of black hair and piercing blue eyes is a good start. Time to bulk up and read up on the character. I’d be fine with him watching the Superman animated series and JL cartoon shows even. That version was pretty on point imo. Gunn might have his own specific take in mind, but I can see the guy in the role and glad we are getting some momentum. A ton of weight is on this film, and nailing down the right actors is a key component for success.

Most importantly, I just hope he's a good actor. Searched for some clips online, didn't see anything special, but then again, he's never been given the opportunity to shine so I guess we'll see.

LOL, harsh and it is subjective, but kinda true. He he. I never liked Margot Kidder (spelling?), and Amy Adams didn't even look like Lois (Snyder, go figure) from the comics and had ZERO sexual chemistry with Superman. It felt like she was his mom. I like this pick. I have seen her in the Marvelous Miss Mabel or whatever that Amazon series is, and she is cute and funny, and best of all, can act.
He LOOKS like Superman, the tallest actor yet to play him, 6' 4" and just to compare Cavill was 6' 1". He will need to down his morning steroids and hit the grueling studio enforced weight training to get to Cavill's bulk, but I am sure they dumped millions on his doorstep to do just that.

      Hahaha, I'll be honest, he was probably my favorite part of that movie too (a lot of that was the character himself, not his performance specifically). Again, not a bad actor by any means, just not "great" or anything. My point is that being a "Juliard graduate", whatever that means, is no guarantee that you're a truly great actor.
      Like Kara said, Moses is just an awful actress. Granted I've only seen her in Queen's Gambit & Obi-Wan, the first of which was an unnoteworthy performance as far as I'm concerned but in Obi-Wan she was truly horrible. I honestly couldn't believe how bad her acting was. She tried WAY too hard. Didn't help either that the writing of the character was bad too, obviously but still.

      Yeah she was the worst part of Obi-Wan, terrible writing and a bad character arc. The whole show was pretty mid at best though, Ewan was great as ever and i thought Vader was used very well but you can tell it was a film forced to be a TV show. Worst part though? Not using any of the John Williams SW music until right to the very end.

      Yep that, Duel of the Fates and Anakin's Dark Deeds are my favourite SW tracks. Williams best work is from the prequels in my opinion and RotS is his best ever score in my opinion.

      I know we recently got Young Justice cartoon series and Titans HBOMax series, but I’d still love Gunn to give us a Titans project fairly early on in his release schedule. Half the stuff he announced I really don’t care about. I believe Titans done right could hit home to wide audience. But then again I thought people would like Flash.

      Going for a Titans film over JL would be a interesting choice, it would set them apart from Marvel and wouldn't have the hassle of selling JL to an audience that doesn't care.
      Nightwing, Wally's Flash, Starfire. Cyborg, Raven and Beast Boy would be a solid line up.

  Not sure about that... Henry's contract forbade him from using PEDs & given his progression & maintenance throughout the years, it's pretty obvious he didn't use them. I don't see why WB would change that policy for David. They don't want their "Superman" to resort to steroids out of fear of bad publicity.
  Not saying it's impossible though bc literally 80% of men in Hollywood who ever did any type of physical role is on steroids. It's the exception NOT to be at this point. Exceptions are guys like Bale, Pattinson, Henry (which is the most impressive given his ridiculous physique), MAYBE Chris Evans (not sure though), but the others? Decent choices. I miss Cavill and he should still be there tbh. Corn Sweat can do it. He seems to get the goofy Clark down. He will seriously need to hit the gym. He won't be able to skate like Pattinson. I hope they take the time to focus on the experience of the comics and the animated series. No radical reimaginings or attempts to 'fix' what was never broken. Don't edgelord and don't try to turn back the clock to Donner. Been burned so many times by not reading the room that I can't be excited until I see way more.

Funny how everyone is making a big deal about this guy hitting the gym, NFS!! Has anyone seen Christopher or Brandon when they were cast? Did any one see the footage of them in the gym lifting to bulk up for the roll? I believe the only Superman cast who was semi buff was Cavill.
BTW I too wish Cavill was still the MOS and got his true sequel, but it is not happening no matter how much we want it. Maybe down the road, he may be back for a Kingdom Come movie, ie: Keaton/Batman in The Flash.
Until then, we have no choice but to move on.

I approve this. David has that kindness in his eyes that Reeve and Welling had. As much as I like Cavill, his Superman was horrible and the DCEU is poison at this point.

I personally find them both too retro/old school looking as Supes and Lois. But I do see David's potential. I was hoping for Wolfgang Novogratz or Pierson Fode but I'll be interested to see how well his transformation will evolve into the look of Superman. However, I welcome a recasting though of Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane ANYTIME. She does not have the look to me of a modern day Lois. Maybe a 50s Lois, not a current one. Where is Jessica Lowndes or Katherine Langford? Michelle Keegan? Alexandra Daddario? Let them test! Have you seen Daddario's Men's Journal mag cover? C'mon!
