After several reports, it is confirmed that, James Gunn has cast Nicholas Hoult in the role of Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman: Legacy.
Following reports from earlier this month, James Gunn has now confirmed the casting of Hoult.
Yes, finally I can answer, @nicholashoult is Lex Luthor in #SupermanLegacy and I couldn’t be happier. We went out to dinner last night to celebrate and discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget. “But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true?” Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain. Anyway, here’s to Lex (and Nicholas!), one of my very favorite characters in the DCU.
Hoult is no stranger to comic book films. He previously played Hank McCoy/The Beast in multiple X-Men films, but has also flirted with DC Projects before. He was one of the final two choices to play the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves' The Batman, a role that eventually went to Robert Pattinson.
Hoult will be joining previously announced David Corenswet as Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. They will all be joined by Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer.
With filming slated to begin in Jan., and numerous other roles to still be announced, there are sure to be more announcements in the coming weeks.
Superman: Legacy will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
