James Gunn has shared that he doesn't foresee that the upcoming Superman will need any reshoots as it enters post-production.
With Superman having recently wrapped principal photography, the film is now enter post-production which includes stages such as editing, visual effects, scoring, and more.
Gunn was asked on social media, "Would you also say that you're 98% done with Superman?" to which he replied, "Heck no. Once you're done shooting you've only just begun! Still lots of editing, VFX, sound, and scoring to be done!" This led to a question from another fan, asking, "Re-shoots can also add a lot on time, too?" Gunn replied, "I don't know. I've done a total of one day of reshoots on my past two films combined."
Reshoots have become a very common activity on big-budget films, so it's surprising to hear a director say they have done so few of them. Gunn was asked what he attributed to this and he gave a checklist of why he thinks this is so.
- Over-prepare
- Don't start shooting until I have a finished script my whole team is happy with
- Hire actors and department heads I know can do their jobs
- Surround myself with people who will challenge me and not just yes-sir everything
- Ask myself daily - are there any small imperfections in the script or what we're shooting that might end up feeling like huge imperfections when we cut the film together?
- 1 and 2 again!
The cast of Superman is set to include David Corenswet as Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. They will all be joined by Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, and María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer.
Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
