James Gunn confirms Superman is 100% complete

James Gunn took to social media on Thursday night to confirm that Superman is now complete ahead of its July 11 release.

Gunn celebrated the milestone on social media, saying, "Our last visual effect shot has been finished and dropped into Superman. We are now 100% done. Thanks to all my collaborators! It has been a joy. And for the rest of you - I can’t wait for you to see the movie July 11."

It has been a big week for the highly anticipated movie, with marketing kicking into high gear, and Gunn also confirming the run time (2 hours, 9 minutes). With just over a month to go before the film's release, we have to wonder what may still be in store to prepare audiences for the film.

Superman will serve as the first live-action entry expressly made for the new DCU. In addition to seeing Superman, the film will include the first appearances of Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, Cat Grant, Steve Lombard, Lex Luthor, Eve Teschmacher, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Guy Gardner, the Engineer, and Krypto the Superdog. Some rumors have indicated we will also see the first appearance of Supergirl, who is set to be played by Milly Alcock. She will then appear in her own film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The cast of Superman is set to include David Corenswet as Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. They will all be joined by Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer , Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Christopher MacDonald as Ron Troupe, and Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard.

Superman will hit theaters in wide release on July 11, 2025.

Ya know, you might be right. I don't feel the hype for it, at least not online. Doesn't seem like there's been much marketing, though.
I guess it could be in more of a Batman Begins situation (trying to rehab the brand) than an Iron Man (unburdened by what's come before), but that'll take critical acclaim to really build into something, and I don't understand Gunn's critical appeal. 20 years ago, which is where my tastes still are, probably, I can't imagine critics being impressed with his superhero outings. These days, it seems professional critics want a sky portal and some laughs from this genre.

  I think you’re wrong saying it is like what happened with Batman Begins. Totally different situation. Batman Begins was rebooting after Batman and Robin which was a big flop. Justice League wasn’t well received, but it wasn’t a big flop. That Superman was really loved by a lot of people and it wasn’t like he was a George Clooney. With that being said this has got big boots to fill if he’s going to be anywhere close to Harry.

    I'm not comparing the DCEU to Schumacher's Batman, I'm just talking about the level of baggage. In both cases, for different reasons, a new outing is probably a tough sell.

  Im sure there are "some" critics these days at least that still think comic books are schlock and shouldn't be taken too seriously. So when they see a CBM trying to be much more than just a typical fun silly movie for kids, they think its pretentious and unnecessary.
  With Gunn, whether you like him or not the guy clearly knows how to make a crowd pleaser at least. I feel like some people attribute his style to why the MCU became so reliant on jokes and quippy dialogue over the years, resulting in oversaturation of those things and people becoming more and more jaded towards it, but its hard to say its really his fault specifically for that. That just happened to be "his" style. In its own box I think its completely fine and understand why people are into it.

  Twenty years ago there would have been almost nothing to compare Gunn's films to. They're the result, themselves, of almost twenty years of the superhero formula being over-refined.
  Isn't Thunderbolts* one of the only recent superhero movies to get a decent critical reception lately? It's praised for not looking like it desperately wants to be the next big summer blockbuster. It also wasn't a summer blockbuster. Superman looks like a summer blockbuster and WB is no doubt hoping it performs like a summer blockbuster. What the professional reviewers have to say about it will be secondary to whether word of mouth is that it's fun.
  I don't watch the MCU, or read Marvel much, but Thunderbolts* looks more my speed than Superman. I am confident that Supes will make more money than Team Depression because it's gonna be all broad strokes and Hope. I'm not so sure it will get better reviews than Thunderbolts*. I think superhero fatigue is real, but I also think audiences are trained to have such specific expectations for what Big Two superhero movies are supposed to be like that unless you're a brand name superhero like Batman, you'd better conform.

    Mostly, the successful MCU movies get a Rotten Tomatoes "Tomatometer" somewhere in the 80s-90s% with an average rating (still viewable on the html page) around 7/10. I don't know if I'd call it real 'acclaim'. For this genre, maybe. The individual reviews are never all that glowing, typically. Just of the "yeah, it's an okay popcorn actioner, but you'll forget it when you head to dinner afterwards" variety.
    At any rate on the '20 years ago' thing, back then it seemed like critics were more averse to 'formula' movies, and they were harsh on superhero movies, in general - especially if they were cartoonish and not really story- or character-driven. Novelty was effective, but 'same'ness wasn't...

For this genre, maybe. The individual reviews are never all that glowing, typically. Just of the "yeah, it's an okay popcorn actioner, but you'll forget it when you head to dinner afterwards" variety.

      Not acclaim, exactly, for Thunderbolts*, but, like I said, "decent critical reception." I haven't found anyone who just wants to rag on this movie mercilessly (except a YouTuber or two who earn their living that way).
      I can't sit through movies with big CG battles. I am a practical effects kind of girl all the way. To me, Thunderbolts* looks like a potentially good movie with some stronger, emotionally resonant themes, and Superman looks like... well, like a lot of other comic book movies have looked, but with Superman's "Hope" branding splashed all over it. (I hate the candy-colored posters.)

Yeah, they need to hit the after-burners on the marketing. They are basically a month out. This looks interesting and there is a chance they deliver this perfect tonal balance of the lore while feeling like the books, like the closest thing to the Bruce Timm stuff.
