In a new interview, Nicholas Hoult discusses his journey through auditioning for Batman and Superman and arriving at Lex Luthor in the new Superman film.

Hoult appeared on the latest episode of Happy Sad Confused in support of Juror #2, but, of course, his involvement with multiple comic book properties, including the upcoming Superman was impossible to avoid.

Hoult came very close to playing Batman in The Batman, and then went out for Superman in James Gunn's upcoming film. As is well-known now, he ended up taking on the role of Lex Luthor instead. With so many actors having already played the role, he was asked about what he is taking from those performances. "It's never about that. I think you take from all the previous interpretations of the character and the comics, and you build upon it. That's the fun thing in movies and comics and all kind of media is a sense of the history of of all of it. It's all kind of a building amalgamation of it.

Having tried out for two such iconic roles, he was asked if he had any secret selfies on his iPhone of him as Batman and Superman. "Yeah yeah," he replied with a smile. "Maybe for Halloween, I'll be Wonder Woman."

The cast of Superman is set to include David Corenswet as Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. They will all be joined by Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, and María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer.

Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
