As James Gunn prepares to film The Suicide Squad, he is also out promoting Brightburn, which he served on as a producer. This is an opportunity for him to be asked questions about The Suicide Squad that he will give very vague answers to.
Ash Crossan from Entertainment Tonight asked him whether or not the film is a sequel, to which Gunn replied, “You know, these terms are all so narrow. There are so many terms,” Gunn said. “It is what it is. You’ll see in two years when it comes out.”
In other words, we still don't know.
The debate as to whether or not The Suicide Squad is a sequel to Suicide Squad has been going on since the film was announced. Producer Peter Safran, in particular, has been beating the "it's a reboot" drum hard, but then the waters got muddied by the fact rumors of returning cast keeps popping up.
Margot Robbie has been rumored for ages to be back as Harley Quinn. Jai Courtney has been talking up his return as Captain Boomerang. And we're hearing Viola Davis is coming back as Amanda Waller. And there is even some talk of Joel Kinnaman returning as Flagg.
And then there is the possible reboot angle as there are new characters on the way as well. David Dastmalchian is confirmed as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior is rumored for a genderswapped Ratcatcher, and we still have no clear indication who Idris Elba is playing. A new rumor, however, points to his character having a daughter, so that narrows down the field a bit. And the final new character rumor has Benicio del Toro possibly up for the role of the film's villain.
We're finding ourselves falling more and more into the camp that this film is some sort of hybrid of a sequel and a reboot, but what exactly that looks like is still a question mark.
The Suicide Squad is due to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
