It seems that Patty Jenkins has had some time to rethink the release date of Wonder Woman 1984, and now she wishes she hadn't pushed it back.

When Wonder Woman 1984 was originally announced, the release date was set for Dec. 13, 2019. It then moved up to Nov. 1, 2019, Then came the news that it would be moving all the way back to June 5, 2020. It was eventually learned that director Patty Jenkins felt rushed with those 2019 dates and she had always wanted June 2020. Now it seems she's thought about it some more.

Jenkins revealed in a recent interview that she has screened an early cut of the film, and now she really wishes that the film could just go ahead and come out.

While we're sure she was exaggerating a bit about wanting it to come out right this minute, we do second her feelings. It feels odd to know the film is in a state where it can be screened and yet we're still over 12 months out from release.

Wonder Woman was released in the U.S. on June 2, 2017 and went on to earn $821M globally. Warner Bros. was anxious to get a sequel out, and that is what led to the original 2019 release dates. The move from Dec. was originally prompted by not wanting to compete with Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker. The second move was at Jenkins request, and no matter how much the wait may suck, we think it was probably the best idea for the film.

We're definitely more excited than ever for Wonder Woman 1984 now.

I too wish it could come out now as i can't wait to see it, WW is the best movie in the DCEU and personally one of my favourite comic book films so i'm desperate to see the sequel.

    Black Widow might have a chance of releasing in 2020, without over the top CG but it's no where near competition for WW.

I wonder if they'll push it back up depending on how well these test screenings go. It's still crazy that it's more than a year out, and yet she has already begun screening it. I'm hoping to see some footage of Cheetah soon! Seems like marketing for this film will be quiet for quite a while given how far away it is even if they have the footage ready.

This has got to be unprecedented. I can't recall the last time a movie was made and then got shelved for a almost a year.

  I think both Zack Snyder's MoS and BvS, were sitting on the shelf for a while. I think MoS could've been good to go, by late 2012. Where WB screwed Snyder and the fans over, is having so much early confidence in Chris Terrio, that they rushed into pre-production on Justice League.

This film has been finished now for weeks. Yet, somehow, wont be release till next summer. WB must feel like idiots. Jenkins saying this was her choice is a laugh. Now im just wondering how long till small balls WB changes the date for Aquabro2?
I have to say i am very excited for WW84 after reading about Jenkins reactions to it but... once again the state of DC (after Shazams failure) is back to its undecided future.

    Jesus. The film was a hard fail and we will NEVER see a solo sequel. Ever.

      Are you trolling? They’ve already talked about their plans for a sequel, with the producer saying they’re going to get to it sooner rather than later due to the kids’ aging, and the Rock confirming that Black Adam was in the works due to Shazam’s success, etc.

        The sequel news was announced days after opening weekend. Then, days after its theatrical run was over, it was announced that there is now real doubt about a sequel.

        THAT’S doubt of a sequel happening??? Despite the spin desperate article writers are trying to take with that comment, that in no way suggests any such thing. In fact, it suggests the franchise’s future IS secure; he just doesn’t know what the story will entail yet.

        John Wick 4 (date) was announced after first weekend. Thats how its done. Hiring a writer and announcing it means nothing. How many writers has The Flash had? When they announce a date then talk to me.
        After all of this i will be right. Why do you want a sequel to that kids film anyways? Nobody cares about a sequel and pretty sure WB knows it.
        Has the date for Black Adam even been announced? Answer, no.

        Starting writing the script is pretty darn convincing, yes. PLUS the producer saying they ARE GOING to start sooner rather than later with the next film. PLUS the Rock making a public announcement that they can now officially move forward with their long-awaited plans to make the Black Adam movie due to Shazam's success. PLUS the fact that it made well past its budget in box office. PLUS the fact that it was well-received by critics and general audiences alike. Yes, all of that it pretty darn convincing that they are going to make the sequel...
        I haven't even seen the film, lol, so I don't really have a dog in this fight. I'm just pointing out facts that you for some reason seem to be in denial about, despite how evident they seem.

        There will definitely be a sequel imo, but it's more likely now than ever before that they may bring Black Adam in sooner than they wanted to help boost box office numbers. I just don't see an evil caterpillar (Mr. Mind) carrying a sequel to a higher box office number.

      You have to look at the circumstances Shazam was up against. First it was released between CM and Endgame, which was simply one of the top two biggest movies ever (not adjusting for inflation of course). Second, WB itself took away theaters from Shazam to make room for La Llorona and Pikachu, which it chose to release still during Shazam's theatrical run. All things considered, making 360M on a 90M production budget was OK amd Shazam will be even more profitable following DVD/Blu-Ray sales and streaming licenses.
      BTW, looking at the MCU history, don't forget that The Incredilble Hulk, Captain America: First Avenger and Thor 1 were all money losing movies for the studio on theatrical release earnings only. Yet, nobody questioned the future of the MCU because of those losses. Shazam at least was a small, profitable movie that got a 90 % score on RT, putting it among the best CBMs over the past 10 years under that criterion. Again, hardly a failure.

        Where it was placed was WBs fault. In saying that, i seriously doubt it would have done any better on another date. It had enough time to get in 2 great weeks, but it didnt.
        RT score aside and budget costs aside..
        Lets just take a look at this franchise future in regards to a straight up sequel. So we have a (solo) Black Adam coming right? So lets say that the Shazam sequel gets a green light. That film wont happen for another 4 years. In which time the boy actor will not be a boy actor anymore. Also, lets not forget that the BA film is a BA origin film and will not feature the Shazam character. If that is the case then the next film to follow up BA will not only feature Shazam but other DC heros. It has to.
        In that case my theory still stands as Shazam will NOT have a sequel but will instead be a featured character within a movie. I sincerely hope DC does not follow that path again.
        Besides, just think about what i just said. What characters will we see going against BA? Aquabro, WW and Shazam only?? No. We will need a new Superman. So lets add that equation into the mix and it equals to no possibility in seeing a solo Shazam sequel. No time and child actors will be too old.

    True. I'm sure they need 2-4 more months of clean-up. Which still gives them more than enough time for its original release date. If I remember, during rumors of it being moved back, I said it should be moved up instead. So my initial thinking of when this film would have been ready was spot on.
    It's a shame. If it IS this good, an earlier date would have worked.

  They're releasing solo/contained films for their future. They have a lot of films in the works, but they also have 7 films slated until 2022. And they may add more next year. Their next 7 films all look and sound pretty cool. All very different from the last, and that's what they want to do. They aren't focused on an overarching story where every solo is just a step to the later, "bigger" film with everyone. They're just trying to make better and more unique individual films. Joker and BoP speak to that. They'll be just fine. They've been smarter with budgets, production, and allotting creators as much time as possible to make the product. And they've hired some pretty dope directors. WW84, Batman, SS, and Aquaman 2 all have potential to break a $B, based on casting, marketing, hype, etc. That's 4 of their next 7 already confirmed films. Plus, the Rock is Black Adam? C'mon. Their future is very bright.

Sounds like she finished the movie a lot earlier than planned. I actually like the delay. Gives the audience a chance to miss the character a little bit more. It gives Gadot more time away from the character, as well. Sorta like what Christian Bale got, in between Batman movies.👍

DC seem really slow getting their tentpole movies out compared to Marvel. Years between WW 1 and 2, no sign at all of a Man Of Steel sequel, and Affleck’s already left Batman... it’s all a bit of a shambles really, and I say that as a fan and someone who desperately wants DC to succeed. These are my favourite characters, and we’re just not getting the goods. Marvel on the other hand, well I’ve lost count of the amount of films Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr have done as Captain America and Iron Man, it’s hugely impressive. It seems the DC Universe is already falling apart. Come on DC and Warner’s, get it together!

  My thoughts exactly, if you factor in the X-Men movies and the Sony movies like Venom and the forthcoming Morbius, Marvel fans are getting the goods, WB/DC is looking lame in comparison, it's frustrating being a DC fan but that's what you get when one studio owns all the characters.

    Ironman, Cap, and Thor are all under one studio and they each got a trilogy of movies. On top of that, Marvel Studios has also done four avenger movies, two Antman movies, two GotG movies, doc strange, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. and they did all that in 11 years under one studio. Being under one studio should have helped to connect all the DC characters, WB just missed the boat with a shard universes because they are idiots.

      What WB should have done is create a "DC Studios" sub division with a grand mastermind running it like Disney has with Marvel Stuidios and Feige.

        100% but the problem would still be that they would be building a universe on the foundation of BvS. After TDK trilogy, someone at WB should have at least looked at what marvel did with the phase 1 and been "guys i think we need to figure this out sooner rather than later" and especially after the first Avengers.

        however, you are right in the sense that Disney was smart to let make Marvel studio be separate so they could just focus on the MCU while Disney does other things. WB should have done the same as they have a wide variety of movies, and thus, a DC studios would have been great

  do some research. they were making a universe, people didnt like it, so they scrapped. they hired new people to run DC films in jan of 2018. They've been much smarter with all of their decisions since then and have hired great directors, but they aren't in a rush. They have 7 films slated up until 2022. What more could you want? MCU has their bonafide strategy and they follow it for every movie and they all feel just about the same. Very repetitive. DC wants each film to be it's own thing. Have it's own tone and style. Joker shows that. BoP and WW84 will show that. DC isn't following that universe building strategy that MCU is doing, and they aren't on a 20 movie streak where they know exactly what their audience wants. DC had their problems, people hated the movies, so they changed it and are working on different things, but those things will take time.

      I’d rather them take their time and make something unique and exciting then them just drop the same old thing every couple months. All of their upcoming films look and sound unique and that’s more exciting then the same style, tone, and genre of film imo. They hired entirely different people to run DC Films in Jan of 2018 as they were scrapping the previous arc of films since most people didn’t like it. Shit will take time. Doesn’t mean they aren’t working. They have a lot of new stuff in development since hiring those new people with some pretty dope directors attached so far. They’ve released 7 films in 6 years. They have 6 films slated for the next 4, and maybe adding more by this time next year. But they haven’t shat out 20 films yet so I guess they’re just slugging along.

        Ok, if you are fine with the pace and performance of WB at the moment, good for you, with WW84 delayed from it's original release date and The Batman stuck in development hell, and the news l read this morning that WB aren't particularly happy with Reeves script, it might be BS of course but who knows as there seems a marked reluctance on the part of WB to get this movie off the starting grid, but hey if you are happy then great.         I never claimed to be happy with it. I'm taking it as it is. They shit the bed early, but have also put out some fairly entertaining films as of late. Just as entertaining as any other superhero blockbuster. Not great films, but not overtly divisive outings either. They don't need to pump out 3 films a year after rebuilding itself internally only a year ago. They're just focused on making better, more unique movies. They have 2 a year until 2022. That's solid. WW84 wasn't delayed in a negative sense. Jenkins wanted it in the summer and they now don't have to worry about Frozen 2 or Star Wars 50. That was a smart move. The only recent news of the Batman script is that WB wanted more spectacle. That was months ago. They're taking their time on it because the last time Batman was in a movie, everyone hated it. The last time he had a solo, it made a $B. I expect they want the latter for Reeves' films, so they're making sure all is well. Casting news is practically daily now. The hype is definitely real. I dont see that as them being reluctant to make the movie. Plus, Nolan's film started shooting earlier than expected, that leaves Pattinson's schedule open for the winter shoot they were aiming for on Batman. 3 films in the chamber, all look/sound unique and interesting. 2-3 more shooting in the next year, plenty more being written/fleshed out. They'll be just fine and can easily up the quality of their product. The toughest thing for them imo will be to get fans back on their side, but with characters like Aquaman, WW, and Shazam proving to be hits, they can continue to grow. Plus, fans have short memories and are attracted to whats in their face. When trailers start dropping for their films, people will understand the route they're going. Much more unique solo/contained films.

Hoping for another shift in dates myself to move it back up a bit. February or March 2020 would be awesome even though it's a clear winner for 2020 Summer blockbuster.
I will gladly take a Springtime blockbuster.
