It's 'Wonder Woman 2' vs. 'Star Wars: Episode IX' in December 2019

A couple of months ago, Warner Bros. announced that Wonder Woman 2 would be released on December 13, 2019. Today, Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Episode IX will be directed by J.J. Abrams, co-written by Batman v Superman and Justice League's Chris Terrio, and come out a week later, on December 20, 2019.

That's not good news for Wonder Woman (or Star Wars, for that matter). Having two huge blockbuster movies released so close to each other is bad for both movies. And as popular as Wonder Woman was, Star Wars is the bigger franchise. It'll be interesting to see if Warner Bros. reacts and moves the release date of Wonder Woman 2.

Remember, they moved the original Wonder Woman away from Transformers 5, and it ended up being a very smart decision. It gave Wonder Woman room to breathe and it ended up owning the summer.

  Haven't they scheduled something for release on Feb 14, 2020? Maybe these dates are too close together? Personally, I think it would be awesome if WB/DC released like 3 or 4 movies within a few months. Think about how much world building can be done.

  This is not the same scenario as with BvS and Civil War, since I think everyone is in agreement that Star Wars is the bigger franchise this time.
  Besides, I don't think a one week gap is that close; I think they can keep it there and still do fine.

  I say keep it where it is. They should go for it and see where Star Wars really stands. The only potential setback is the opening weekend because the people that want to see WW and going to watch it regardless, just maybe not on the opening weekend.

I say keep the course, change the script a little and pull the trigger on including Batman and Superman where the Trinity needs to fight along side each other vs Felix Faust (played by Mark Strong) and Black Adam and try to save Themyscria also special appearance by GL and Shazam

  You said change the script a little, then pitched a complete movie with multiple cameos by million dollar actors, all to compete against Star Wars, which it can't. Move it forward a month or or back a month and release the movie that needs to be released, not a useless dick measuring contest between stuidos.

Sony's He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is currently scheduled between them on December 18. WW and Star Wars both need to move! 😃
As a DC guy, I've been bummed with the flack WB has had to endure with their recent films, deserved or otherwise. But I agree with those who think WW2 should shift its release date. Frozen 2 is scheduled for November 27 (the day before Thanksgiving) the month before, and supposedly Bond 25 is out a few weeks before that. Maybe November 15, a week after Bond (if that date holds)? Melissa McCarthy's "Margie Claus" is on that same date; no competition there.

They'll most likely move it towards thanksgiving. It would be a dumb move to compete with Star Wars, which will be owning December for years to come.

Move it up a month at least. Diana and Rey are both great heroes but there is no need to be so close in release. WW2 will have solid shot at $900 mil if it doesn't have to contend with that juggernaut franchise.

This is a no brainer. As much as I love WW, Star Wars will kick the shit out of it. It reminds of that Tina Fey & Amy Poehler Sisters movie that faced off against TFA. Poehler joked on various talk shows that "We are going to kick Star Wars ass!" They picked up a few movie goers when TFA was sold out, but that's about it.

Particularly given that this is, at least in theory, the "last" Star Wars movie (end of the 3rd trilogy), WW needs to move if SW isn't delayed. But they don't need to make that decision just yet; there's still 2 years for things to shake out. But looking at boxofficemojo, here's what's around it:
11/1: Untitled DC film (it could move here in theory depending on what else is around)
11/15: Margie Claus: WB Christmas film I assume
11/22: Untitled Fox Marvel film
11/27: Frozen 2 (big competition for the young girl market)
12/13: Current WW spot
12/18(?): Masters of the Universe
12/20: SW9 and Wicked
Next big WB event film is in Feb. 2020.

        You do know what "summer" means, right? And you do know that Wonder Woman still beats Homecoming in that seasonal period, the period that determines who "owns" the summer.
        If I'm not mistaken, Homecoming has been behind WW until this past weekend when it opened in China, right? Thing is, the summer box-office is from May to September 4th. And even if Homecoming opened on the Monday before it's opening weekend, the 4th of Sep, that would still put it out of the range of the summer box-office.

        No one is discounting Homecomings success, literally no one said it wasn't a success.It's a success (just like Dunkirk and GotG Vol.2) whether it won the summer or not. I only explained to you what the determining factors for the "Summer winner" is, and unfortunately for Spidey, the $70 Million it made in China doesn't count as part of that SUMMER period. That's all. So the article is right in saying WW won the summer.

        Yes, if worldwide gross counted and if it went into the weekend after the Labour Day weekend then yes, Homecoming is the summer winner. But unfortunately for Spidey, thats not how this works.

I say they should keep right where it is and stick it to Disney and another lazy JJ Abrams copy and paste Star Wars film that will get a pass from critics! Lol. Nah...chances are WB's will probably move it up to November 1st 2018. No competition for 3-4 weekends.

  They just nailed down Patty Jenkins and she's developing the script with Geoff Johns. At this rate they'll start shooting around March/April next year. Possibly want to get a better movie than the first one.

Yeah I figure Wonder Woman 2 will open summer 2020 then? I guess it depends on how far Patty is with the screenplay, otherwise I can see WB pulling it forward to November 2019.

  It is possible they just push it to summer June 2020. I think WB's/DC will still want it released sooner rather than later though and strike while the iron is hot. Waiting 3 years between releases with CBM's is kind of a waste of years IMO. Just depends on the story and script of course.

    Nothing is set for that date, but GCS is unlikely to take it. SS2 will be the next Harley film, and Joker & Harley seems to be ahead of GCS in the pipeline.
