on Amber Heard reflects on Zack Snyder pitching her Mera: He had me at "warrior queen"

As he did for a lot of the roles in the DC Extended Universe, Zack Snyder cast Amber Heard as Mera. After a brief scene in Justice League, she'll be co-starring with Jason Momoa in Aquaman. In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Heard recalled what it was like when Snyder pitched her about the role.

"I'm allergic to being the damsel, the two-dimensional archetype of what women are often limited to in this industry, especially in the superhero world," Heard explained. "Zack got me at 'warrior queen'. He said, 'You get a sword and a crown,' and I'm like, 'Okay.'"

As Batman News exclusively reported last February, Amber Heard's Mera is very much a co-lead in Aquaman. She's not just playing a love interest.

We'll get to see new footage of Heard in action as Mera next month. Aquaman director James Wan confirmed that the trailer will debut at San Diego Comic-Con.

Keep cool, Amber is an experienced actress and her Mera is spot on. She surely
won‘t spoil the action, maybe she will finally have her breakthrough with this
movie. She‘s not only stunning as a person, but she‘s also entertaining, smart
and has a pretty dry sense of humor. Watch the interviews with her, she‘s very likable.

It's definitely time for her to breakout like ScarJo. Amber Heard will do a great job. She was one of my many Catwoman fancasting choices. Very weird that Snyder didn't just have Arthur and Mera already together in Justice League. It could've been similar to that second Aquaman episode in Smallville. Would've loved to have seen Mera interact with Wonder Woman.🔥 https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

What sword? Mera does not wield a sword, only the one she makes from water.

Perhaps that is what is meant. Or maybe she will be wielding one in Aquaman.

I wish Zack didn't have to cast every side character in JL, like Iris West, Mera, Cyborg's dad, etc etc. The directors of the stand alone movies should get the choice in their casting, not having actors already picked just for the sake of cameos.(edit: I loved all of Zack's casting. But when trying to lure great talented directors, most of them will want to have a clean slate to start from).

    1. Half life 3 confirmed Avatar

Mr. Snyder never casted Iris West. When Mr. Famuyiwa was going to direct the Flash movie, he casted Ms. Clemons as Iris West.

Remember though, Snyder was led to believe that he was basically in charge...until he wasn't. And I think it's pretty clear that Snyder was ambitiously trying to do as much world-building as possible.

            myzteriusreplying to Nahuel Benvenuto

What are you talking about? The sole purpose of filmmaking is to please the audience, and that didnt work, which is the reason he got fired. His plan didnt work, the quality of the movies dont even matter, the plan simply did not work. He had 5 movies planned and people lost interest after the second one. Therefore, the plan did NOT WORK.

Thank you for presenting a negative thought in a respectful and fair and logical way instead of needlessly propagating the unhealthy, obsessive hatred some have for a director they don’t even personally know. You make a good point, but hopefully we get good directors willing to work with these actors anyway. We know they can be great, and that some directors have really struck gold with a little willingness to work with what they were given, like Patty Jenkins. :)

If Zack was actually allowed to continue as the 'leader' of the DCU, it'd definitely make sense for him to have a bigger role in casting the whole universe. But WB kinda led him on then took the reins without it being clear who was in charge (from an outsiders perspective I guess)

        1. NinjaGamer13 Avatar
          NinjaGamer13

I think you’re right. Yeah, the organization at WB just seems to be nonexistent. Doesn’t seem they have a lot of plans or structure at this point.

        1. Mark Avatar
          Mark

Absolutely never. Not having an official name for their universe was a HUGE marketing failure on WB's part. The guy who wrote the initial article on the project in Entertainment Weekly meme invented the DCEU name and threw a (TM) after it and fandom just ran with it for years ( and still are for convenience).

        2. NinjaGamer13 Avatar
          NinjaGamer13

Well that wasn’t actually my concern but thanks anyway. I don’t think they’re rebooting it at this point.

Yeah, that's a better way of explaining it. I'd really hope they don't retcon every aspect of BVS batman if they do that though. I like the idea of a flawed batman.

I know it wont be a "full on reboot" but changing batman is something big. Batman is the leader of the league, thats like recasting Robert Downey jr, and thats not a small reboot to me.

Snyder hurt the DCEU not only with his movies but his poor casting choices as well.

He was given too much power. Now they've got inaccurate characters like Lex "Michael Cera" Luthor, AquaMoana and Barry "Richard Ramirez" Allen.

That's not to say some of his casting choices were not great (Cavill, Gadot), but some were outright terrible.

You know there's more to DC or Marvel for that matter than these damn Hollywood movies that come out, right? I swear people really believe that their entire existence revolves around these movies.

DC's next ten movies could make a combined 75 cents and a half eaten pop tart and could be 10x shittier and hated than Catwoman and Batman & Robin fused together and it would harm them about 0%.
