'Aquaman' test screening details and reactions: an emotional action movie

Believe it or not, Warner Bros. held a test screening for Aquaman yesterday despite the movie not hitting theaters until December 21st. Most visual effects weren't finished yet, but some were. Batman News spoke with several people who attended the screening and their reactions were very positive!

Aquaman was described to me as an emotional action movie. I was told that the tone is similar to Wonder Woman. There is humor, but it's more of a drama. And thanks to director James Wan's previous work there are elements of horror as well.

Aquaman has Star Wars-like underwater battles, scary monsters, lots of emotions, and an amazing villain in Orm, played by Patrick Wilson. Amber Heard's Mera is very much a co-lead and not just a love interest to Jason Momoa's Aquaman.

I'm going to get into more detail below. No big spoilers, but continue reading at your own discretion...

Characters just talk normally underwater. No giant air bubbles like we saw in Justice League.
The rumors were true, Jason Momoa wears the comic book Aquaman costume in the movie.
Black Manta is a secondary villain. He looks just like he does in the comics and has the same origin as well.
Superhero News scoop confirmed, The Trench is in the movie.
Yes, Aquaman can talk to fish, and he does in the movie.

That's all I can say without getting into major spoiler territory. Based on what I've been told, Warner Bros. has a great movie in their hands. Now let's hope they leave James Wan alone and don't cut it up like they did with Suicide Squad and Justice League.

Any idea why they screened it so early? Are they confident in it or were they just trying to see if they need to change stuff before they got super deep into post-production?

  I have no idea why it screened so early. Wonder Woman tested in February too, but that had a June release. December is so far away.

    It's a common practice. Basically it's to assure the higher ups that there money was well spent, and can also be used to ask for more money should more money be required or to delay the film's release should execs or the director feel the film needs more time. It can also give the execs and idea of what scene's to show in trailers and such.

    We heard the same thing for all previous films :
    BvS -> Standing ovation
    SS -> great movie
    JL -> excellent movie
    .........
    Those movies were so awful that no cut could save them & WW proves the point.
    The reality is that you never hear anything bad from test screening because no studio is that stupid to let that happen & destroy the film by himself. So you are not an intelligence being if you judge a film based on test screening reaction.

        I liked BvS, but it was divisive, and that is a shame. I only watched the Extended Version, though, so maybe I would feel different if I watched the Theatrical Version

        Nah. The extended version is better. The theatrical is more divisive without the extended material. First time I watched the theatrical it felt so disjointed. Second time around, everything clicked for whatever reason, but the divisiveness was clear. The extended brings a bit more added context to smooth things over I think but it still is what it is.

        BvS extended cut was a little bit better. The overall story structure holds up better, but doesn't really change the film or improve in much imo.

        I like you NinjaGamer13, but unfortunately, I don't think the Snyder Cut can save JL at this point. Perhaps if it was the original release because it would have continued a singular vision (vs our Snyder/Whedon kaleidoscope disaster), but that is blind speculation. I think it's time to put JL to bed.
        We can't change the past, but the future is still malleable. I trust that we must focus on the latter.

        I just mean save the quality and integrity of the story, which it undoubtably could done. Saving the movie financially/critically is beyond hope at this point. I just want to see the original vision and conclusion to this world that I have been invested in for 5 years now.

    I found an
    interview with Momoa in which he said that in the Justice League there
    was material for two films that was cut, referring also to many of his
    scenes ... and at a certain point he says "There was no need for it
    because you 're going to see it in Aquaman ". Now

    Because more goes into this film than other films - we see how long it's taken for the CGI to get done for us to see the FIRST trailer of a movie that comes out in 5 months. They needed audience reactions EARLY so they could take care of reshoots EARLY on to give them the year they needed for effects.

  maybe they realized that they can't wing GCI two weeks before release. But honestly, I think is the CGI, underwater scenes probably will require more work than normal, I can't think of many movies doing CGI with an underwater look.

  Because 'reshoots' are trending IMO..... and they may just be looking for private opinions on what to reshoot. If a reshoot is even needed at all. But if so, they'll at least have ample time to polish the scenes....... and avoid another cgi-mustache-removal fiasco in which the end product looked questionable to many 👀

  that movie had a bit of the same issues as JL, it was shot to be something but got the final theatrical release was something completely different. There a few interviews with the cast where they seemed a bit lost of what happen to the movie, specially from the actor that played Doom. I hope WB doesn't mess up Aquaman with late requests.

  Not to mention the test-screenings for Suicide Squad were universally positive as well and that movie still turned out they way it did. Its not the final cut of Aquaman that's been screened with completed VFX, score, ect. This movie can be altered drastically/changed between the time it was test screened to the time it reaches its final form in December.

      Except it does. The general audience has a bad taste in their mouths when it comes to DC Films (deservedly so) so they have that much more to prove with their next film (Aquaman). Aquaman will likely suffer from the JL reaction, and so not only does it have to be good, but it also has to be THAT much better to win back the trust and fan base they’ve lost.

        Sure, you could assume that, but WW also had the whole “First female led superhero film” backing to it. Aquaman is already a character not many are fond of, and it being merely “good” won’t make it successful at the BO in my opinion. Could be wrong though!

        I really am hoping right along with you. I was afraid at first that this movie would overreact to Aquaman's perceived lameness by ignoring most of the character's history. The news that his traditional suit will make an appearance is encouraging. It would be nice to see a nod to Storm.

WOW!!!! That all sounds awesome so please WB don't screw it up, very happy horror elements are in and i'm glad Manta has his comic look as its too iconic to change. Forgot Wilson was in this, he's a great actor so i'm glad he's used well. i'm also very glad it seems Mera is very much a co-lead even if i'm not sold on Heard until i see her in the film.
Hopefully the final film will match or beat these reactions and that WB don't play around too much, now we just need a teaser trailer pretty please WB.

        All of those were the movie's biggest issues, and all of them have been confirmed to have come from cuts and reshoots. So how WOULDN'T it fix them?

        That's fine, but if they're going to do it, I wish they would go ahead and do it. I always like to buy extended versions over theatrical cuts. Anyway, I definitely like the UE, more than the theatrical which I also liked, but when it comes to say suicide squad, I never watched the theatrical cut, I got the extended version and did not like it. So I'm thinking it's 50-50. Either way, I was just entertaining the possibility that it won't help. It's not something I've considered, since obviously those that want it expected to be better that the theatrical.

  Honestly, I felt the most burned by SS. Great trailers with a ton of hype only to reveal a film that was pretty awful entirely. The only bits of quality came from a couple performances who did more than the script would have led us to believe possible. BVS at least had some strong scenes, and it gave us the warehouse scene which no matter how disappointed I was in the movie, will always be one of my all time favorite CBM moments.

Sounds all good to me, but don't fault me if I take all of this with a grain of salt Warner Brothers. By the way saw Black Panther last night, and that movie felt like the DCEU would have been if the executives would just have stayed out. Anyways, hopefully DCEU get back on track starting with Aquaman.

    You're confusion stems from not knowing the difference between staying out and completely not involving yourself. Let me explain, you have a vision as a business owner, you hire a someone to carry out that vision after an extensive search for the right person, and you let that individual express his or her artistic ability based on a set of guidelines for your vision because you have "faith" in that person. That's it, simple, you stay out after that and let it carry its course. MCU has been doing this, and this is why they've been successful. They have a vision, get the right directors for their vision, let them "direct" and bam, box office success. This is what happened with the only successful DCEU movie, Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkins wasn't having it, and look at the results. Listen, I'm a hardcore DC fan, but I am no sheep.

      Warner Bros. had a vision, too. It's what Zack Snyder was asked to do and what he successfully executed on:
      "Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as 'The Dark Knight.' Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. 'We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it.'"
      The problem is that WB won't stick to their plans. They panic and are extremely reactionary. They're also greedy and dump and run whenever a film makes less than a billion dollars (because everyone knows that $700 million and $800 million are grosses for chumps).
      Good riddance to them from this longtime DC fan.

        Yeah, that's what I mean. They don't stick to their plans, and that "to the extent that the characters allow it" is open to debate. It was supposed to be MCU= Light and Fluffy and Funny and DCEU= Dark, Broody, and Serious. The problem for the DCEU is that it only works primarily with Batman and such characters, but they just did not know how to handle Superman in this light with the right balance of fun and dark, he is polar opposite of Batman, which is why it did not work well with the general audience.

The first reactions are almost always positive, then Warner comes with his damn scissors and he screws up the movie. I hope that James Wan makes them respect 'Aquaman'.
On the other hand, apparently we will also see a giant creature!... YEAH!!!

  They will CGI it into a building, just like Henry's mustache was CGI-ed into a lip. No one will notice.

Most if not all of the test screenings are positive.
Hell even Fantastic Four got a positive reaction. Not saying this is going to be shit because I have a lot of faith in Wan but early reactions are hardly ever reliable.

    Other than the execs who just think about where the money is (which they interpreted to be more jokes and bad CGI)

Didn't Batman v Superman also receive "A standing ovation" from WB execs? Additionally, didn't they also request "more Batman" per an article that I read on this website years back?
