First 'The Death of Superman' footage includes the Justice League and Doomsday

Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay hit Digital HD this week, and included in the special features is the first look at the next animated DC movie, The Death of Superman.

In the video above, we see the filmmakers talk about bringing the movie to life. We get a look at the Justice League and some of the voice actors, and even see parts of the big Superman vs. Doomsday fight. Missing from the video is Rainn Wilson, who was just announced to play Lex Luthor.

The Death of Superman will be available this summer. Part two, Reign of the Supermen, will be released in early 2019. Let me know what you think of this sneak peek in the comments below.

It sucks that it's taking place in this animated universe, but the fact that we're going to get The Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen is pretty cool. Plus, if they use these movies to get rid of that damn collar when they bring him back, even better.

BvS Doomsday fight was fucking awful though especially compared to the Zod fight in MoS and the Warehouse scene before it. Superman Vs Doomsday is one of the best fights in comics yet it ended up being one of the most underwhelming fights in a comic book film.
As for the previous film? you mean Doomed? Yeah animation is far better in this one then that and story wise this looks much better and more faithful then what Doomed was, for starts the JL seem to fight Doomsday before Supes what was a big point of the original story even if this film has a different and much better line up.

    Yeah its awful. The CGI isn't great, the battleground is boring and visually weak, Batman should have never been involved and WW does most of the work. Compared to the Supes Vs Zod fight its really poor, anyone whose read one of the Supes Vs Doomsday fights in comics knows it should have been better. While the laser battle part is a great visual it doesn't change that the fight should have been much better and the battle to end all comic book film battles.

      I disagree with you that it's "awful." But I agree that it was underwhelming and nowhere near as good as the Superman/Zod clash.
      That's one reason to not blame Snyder for everything. If there's one thing he can do, it's knock-out-drag-out fight scenes. There's a reason that no battle in BvS nor JL comes close to being as cool as the Smallville duel with Faora and Nam-Ek or Superman and Zod and that's because Snyder's wings were "clipped" so to speak. People complained about the destruction of MOS more than anyone at WB anticipated, so they responded in kind by putting what should have been one of the biggest most violent superhero brawl in the middle of an "Abandoned port" in Gotham.
      And then JL.... Even without the reshoots, the final battle where the League comes together to face a huge world-ending event takes place in.... Chernobyl in Russia where a very small group of people decided to settle down. Then in the reshoots, it's downgraded even further to maybe a handful of families.
      I mean... come on!

      Batman's a normal guy though with no superpowers. It's a completely different thing to film a cool martial artist taking on a dozen guys vs. godlike beings punching each other into oblivion.

      As much as i loved the Warehouse fight i do think the excitement i got with the two big MoS action scenes was bigger, i've been wanting a fight of that epicness in film since i first read a Superman fight in comics.

      It's actually really stupid IMO. The League spent most of the time either getting kicked around or just standing in place. I realize they were in shock, but there is no sense of coordination at all in it.
      As a Superman fan, it was cathartic to see Superman beat them all up, but the circumstances were just too dumb to fully enjoy it.

      I was a fan of so many little touches to that scene, from Barry's face, to Supes looking over his shoulder in the Speed Force, to Cyborg's cybernetics freaking out over Superman being a threat, Diana trying to appeal to Clark through the lasso as a friend, etc.
      It was going great for me until he got to Batman, and then the whole thing awkwardly fell apart into cheeseville.

      I won't dispute personal desires and preferences, but I would ask you what the CGI is poor in comparison to from other movies with the same level of extensive use of it.
      Like, compared to the final battle in Marvel's highest grossing, most popular and praised film ever, it looks amazing.

      I forgive BP though, because I didn't mind in the moment with full context of what was going on. It may even be my favorite Marvel movie. Nitpicking CG in a CG-heavy film is petty to me in the first place, and I'm there for the story first. Better CG is a nice treat, but not worth getting upset over.
      Also, what more would you add to the fight? Superman and Doomsday hit each other really hard numerous times, powerfully sling each other through the air and through objects, the arena is demolished, it goes up into space, you've got tons of stakes and danger, they get hit with a nuke, Batman and Wonder Woman struggle in futility to help, only really pulling through to hold him still barely long enough for Supes to land a finishing blow, etc. All pretty intense and impactful, even if it understandably strayed from being a direct adaptation.
      Did you just want it to have a torn-shirt Superman and Doomsday trading standard punches one at a time like the book? I'd like to have seen some of that, and Supes getting more and more exhausted. I don't think it suffers for lacking it, though, as the fight is rather extensive, epic, and drives the point home in context with this new story anyway.
      I also figured this wasn't the last we'd seen of Snyder's vision for Doomsday, but fans and WB drove a spear through that ever coming to fruition, sadly.

      I really don't like the CGI on Doomsday especially when Snyder can do better CG wise, it also feels very green screen and not real. I won't argue on the BP CGI as i agree it was terrible in the final battle especially when i saw it the 2nd time, its easier to ignore those faults though because the film itself is amazing and the end of the battle is one of the most touching and human moments in the MCU.

      I never understood this. Doomsday looked great by today's standards for CG. I found the scene where he's looking at Superman's monument, breathing slowly, and then turns to look at Superman himself, to be quite chilling and real-feeling.
      That dark glint in his eyes as the helicopter light passes over him, shadowing his eye socket and highlighting that leathery, rock-like skin. Love it.

      And then you have the equally chilling symbolism when Doomsday throws him ruthlessly and disrespectfully through the monument, as though to spit on him as the false god he's been branded as by Lex.

      I don't see what there is not to love about that, and I've yet to be shown a truly 'bad' sample of Doomsday in BvS. I would go so far as to say that, on average, the CG in the battle trumps a lot of that in MoS' Zod fight if you really over-nitpick them both.

      Doomsday is fine as a CG model. He's not badly rendered and he fits into the environment.
      I just wish his actual design was more comic accurate. I hate that he's 25 feet tall. There is a serious disconnect in hand-to-hand combat fight choreography when your main heroes can't even reach the antagonist's face without leaping or flying.
      Much as I unabashedly love BvS, it's not without its share of flaws.

      He was getting there. He was a newborn, yet rapidly growing the bones already with each regeneration.
      Other than the bones and hair, he looks exactly like Doomsday, but with a more satisfying skin texture than ever, and minus the bright green pants.
      If Zack got to show Doomsday's history in JL as he had planned (likely when it was still a two-parter), we would have likely seen a "fully grown" Doomsday battling Darkseid and Steppenwolf deep in the history alluded to by the Kryptonian ship computer to Lex in BvS.
      Everyone wants the end result now, though, and Zack wanted to build up everything gradually and meaningfully in an impatient world. I'm brokenhearted we'll never get it now.

      It's not the bony protrusions though that bugs me the most. It's the height. Doomsday is almost big enough that he could literally shove half of Superman's body in his mouth.
      I really hate that. Like I said, there is a serious lack of fisticuffs when the enemy is tall enough to swat you away like a fly.

      He was in line with the way Doomsday is often portrayed in the books (not necessarily DoS, but plenty of other iterations), and I like the bigger hits just as much as I like fisticuffs. The point to me was never that they were the same size in your typical boxing match so much as it took Superman everything he could muster to take him down.
      It's not like Bane, where his strength is in his abilities as a combatant and tactician, as opposed to what everyone likes to see (a balloon animal Rhino knock-off :P). Doomsday is meant to be an unstoppable train of destruction, and the size portrays that well.
      I can appreciate if you prefer that size and combat style just because you like it, though.

      But the point was to be a fight to the finish in the ultimate fist-to-fist match up. Even the comic made allusions to it being like a drawn out boxing match (the final descriptions of the story was "Like weary boxers who have gone the distance..." and later, many allies and enemies of Superman refer to Doomsday as "your old sparring partner").
      As for Doomsday's size, it depends on the artist, that is true. But even the biggest incarnations of Doomsday are rarely the size BvS portrays him.

      By no means a "small dude," but as you can see, Doomsday isn't large enough to the point where Superman can't literally lock faces with him to look into his eyes. In BvS, Doomsday could be on his knees and he'd still tower head and shoulders above Superman where they couldn't physically meet face to face in a fisticuff lock.
      See, the thing about Doomsday isn't that he's just an unstoppable force like a mindless killing machine; he's RAGE incarnate. He's the epitome of a serial killer on a massive scale. Yes, he has a one track mind, but in the comics, we see him ENJOY fighting and ENJOY killing. The very first panel we see Doomsday in after he crawls out of the earth is him holding out his hand for a little bird to land in and squishing it, laughing maniacally as he's done it. The BvS version lacks that... shall we say "human" element Doomsday possesses (I know it's paradoxical to call a serial killer who enjoys killing "human", but there's still enough of a conscious mind there that we can see that, although Doomsday does what he does out of necessity and instinct thanks to how Bertron "raised" him, he still finds joy and delight out of his purpose). The SIZE of him only further sells that and as a fan of the character, it drives me nuts.

      I think the size just isn't as dramatic of a thing to me - as well as the more literal sense of a boxing match. The size and focal idea are there pretty closely in the film's own way, and it's satisfying to me.
      Again, not that I'd mind a direct adaptation (I'd love it), but I'm open to them being a little creative, and I feel like it works here.

      I think it's totally fair to have that as a preference. Again, this is how I feel about Bane, so I sort of relate to you here. I prefer him to be more like his original appearance than the more gigantic iterations we've seen.
      I personally don't feel it's as important for Doomsday, but if you do, it's respectable, and you've made the case effectively. :)
      Maybe we'll get something closer to a punch-for-punch boxing match from Darkseid... someday!

      Why can't they do something different? I thought it was symbolic that Zod's body and Lex's blood were used to create this Doomsday, and it was not only interesting to think about in terms of that, but also in that it introduced the freaky concept of what exactly a Doomsday is and how it works and is created.
      Further, the suggestion from the computer that it would be a recreation of something ominous, unseen, and ancient was terrifying and cool. I was hoping we'd get to see that eventually, and this newborn clone was the teaser for it.
      Luthor has always been a Dr. Frankenstein kind of character (moreso early on than lately, but it is still there to a degree). I'm fine with him being indirectly responsible for killing Supes in this way. It suits him. It's a neat twist.
      This honestly boils down to purism versus freedom of creativity. While I do dearly love the comics, I'm also open to them experimenting and coming up with fresh twists, and I found this particular one to be compelling.

      And the Russo's have already said that Thanos will discard the armor since it will serve no purpose once he obtains the stones.

      Plenty of kings wear decorative armor and crowns even though they don't serve a physically functional purpose for them.
      It's a symbol of what they represent and, in Thanos' case, his ambition.

      I believe that every effect has a cause, but I appreciate the sense of 'just because' in characters in fiction too. It worked beautifully for the Joker.
      For Thanos, I was never very interested in him trying to impress Death or pretty much anything he did other than he was powerful and had to be stopped. This movie seems like it will change that and make me interested.

      We were never gonna get that extremely brutal of a fight ever since all the internet babies whined about MoS’s having Superman break a few windows being too destructive. But it still wasn’t BAD. And it’s definitely not true that Batman shouldn’t have been involved or that Wonder Woman did most of the work. The teamwork aspects were the coolest parts - seeing the Trinity work together to help take down Doomsday was goooold.

It gave you the highlights, without having to give other DC heroes screen time. I hate that WB Animation felt like they had to redo Death of Superman. Especially coming off the live-action version with BvS and Justice League. But making Lois Lane Superman's love interest for the New 52-inspired animated continuity, is a HUGE plus.       One great visual doesn't make a great fight. The fight in the comic doesn't actually have much great visually but the fight is bloody amazing and takes everything Superman has got, he pushes himself harder then ever before where's the DCEU Supes didn't brake a sweat until Green K got involved.

      Because cool visuals don't make a great fight, Supes Vs Zod lacked great visuals but was a fantastic fight especially when the character work was great for Supes and Zod in the fight. Sure Doomsday is just a plot service and nothing more but there's hardly any character work in the fight for Supes, he never seems to struggle that much until Green K is involved and Supes himself doesn't even do that much as WW is the main spotlight in the fight. When Supes fights Doomsday in the comics its brilliant because Supes is pushing himself harder then before and is scared of what this creature can do, every page he's being warn down but keeps going and when his finally defeats Doomsday and dies in Lois's arms it feels earned and is actually pretty moving because even in his last moments he's concerned for everyone else.

      I have never said Snyder doesn't give good visuals. He should have stuck to cinematography, instead of directing. He can't deliver, or build, a good character story and arc.

      But you go that feeling during the nuke scene. Yeah we know that the nuke wasn't gonna kill him, but you still had that sense of dread. He struggled trying to get DD further away from the planet.

In the comic he's visibly struggling more and more as each page goes on, that fight was the battle of his life and gave him nightmares once he returned from the dead, no enemy scares Supes like Doomsday. End of the day rather just have Doomsday kill Supes with brute force they thrown in laser beams (what annoyingly this film copies) and Green K, the fact Diana can hold her own easily shows Doomsday was pretty weak and that he's more of a danger to everyone else then the Trinity itself. End of the day as Steppenwolf proves if the villain isn't much of a threat or a challenge to the heroes then the fight sucks and the villain sucks.

      He was struggling though. It's only after he gets healed from the sun and has backup that he has an easier time. And of course DD was weak. he was just born. The DD in the comics dies shit tons of times.

      What just shows Snyder just looked at the pictures in Death Of Superman and thought "hey that looks awesome i will copy that and add my own bullshit like laser beams and he will look like a shitty version of that troll in TLOTR". Doomsday may have been just born but he had Zod's body what mean's he had the strength of at least Superman so no he shouldn't have been that weak especially as he's getting stronger (but somehow weaker to Supes and Diana's blows) as the fight goes on.
      Defend it all you want because its BvS related and that's what you do but its mostly agreed it was a poor fight and lacked the epicness of both the comic fight and the Zod fight in MoS.

      Thing is the struggle should have been at the final half not the first, Superman is fighting Doomsday no problem before Green K got involved and that really undermines the fight and Doomsday.
      You know what the difference is between me and you? Despite my dislike for BvS i do admit it has its good parts like Affleck, the visuals (for the most part), Alfred, the opening, WW and of course that Warehouse fight but you can't look past your love for the film and will defend any flaw the film has even if the flaws are widely regarded as flaws from haters and lovers alike.

      I would say Supes vs Zod had plenty of great visual moments. Some of it felt a little weak if you squint too hard, like with Black Panther, but there were some very memorable highlights and it's easy to forgive any nitpicks in context of watching the movie normally.

      I said it lacked them and not that it didn't have them all together, the problem is the grey colors and quick shots don't really highlight them. Honestly the highlight is the bit where Zod first flies as visually its great and its a fantastic moment between Zod and Supes.

      I think that's a fair point in terms of strictly making things pop.
      Still, I liked the grey color scheme because it helped create that feeling of dust, ash, and destruction that Zod was creating of Earth to rebuild Krypton from. The grey added stakes and drama in that context, and made sense after the world engine situation.
      We did get to see the Superman tackle and punch the ever-living **** out of him in the sunlight though, through all that grass, and then ka-pow! So satisfying. :)

      One of the things I love about the Final Battle is that, even though Snyder was using a "handheld camera" aesthetic, he did NOT do Bourne Identity/Hunger Games/Batman Begins fast cutting to go with it.
      During the part where Superman and Zod fight each other after Zod learns to fly, there is only a total of 36 cuts to the point where they both crash into the train station.
      36 cuts is an astonishing LOW amount of shots for a modern day action scene. In comparison, there's literally between 100-200 shots for fight scenes that last less than a minute in a lot of action/sci-fi films today.

      Oh, so you're saying from a character perspective, okay. Well, I would first like to say there was in fact plenty of great visual moments in the Zod fight in MoS :P But also, there are definitely character moments in the Doomsday fight, including for Superman, as you even mentioned with the Kryptonite situation. Not to mention moments for Wonder Woman and Batman. And I really think Superman does take center stage for the fight, not WW (though she is highlighted at points), particularly with his death, which is moving. I think "different" is a more appropriate assessment than "bad." However, I do remember being a tad disappointed with the fight upon first watching it myself, too, though my enjoyment of it increased when I saw the Ultimate Edition. It has been a while since I've watched BvS for now, so I can't confidently say how I feel about it, but I know it's a bit harsh to say it was terrible. I can't fault you for wishing it would feel more brutal and personal like the Zod fight gloriously and painfully conveyed in MoS, though, from what I recall, but again, that's just an unfortunate consequence we have to deal with that came from the very vocal minority's ridiculous complaints and whining about the destruction in that fight. We ought to have known we would never get something QUITE that epic again, or at least in that same flavor of epic. But I need to rewatch the Doomsday fight again; perhaps I like it even more this time around.

Not really. Most of the DCAU movies look like poo and the only reason the scripts get a pass is because they're cartoons. The DCAU scripts would be beyond laughable if performed in live action.

  A better continuity with a better representation of the DC characters and better received by the fan base. Id say the animation teams are doing a better job. Its not about direct comparison, animation works in different ways to live action, just look at all the japanese anime to live action films. But my point still stands, actually the TV guys are doing a better job than the film studios as well.
  It doesn't matter about the money as we saw with JL. You can keep on making crap films that make money for as long as you want but it always catches up with you. In this case WB.

    In the begging the DCAU was really close to the comic storylines, now they have taken liberties, set up a kind of connected universe. Even with that, I have been more invested in the DCAU stories overall, than anything from the DCEU. WW was good though.
    When you factor in the budgets from the DCEU compared to the DCAU, it is quite hilarious. Money can't buy good writers and directors.

    The N52 films aren't as bad as people think though, JL Dark was pretty good, both the Teen Titans films were solid and Batman Bad Blood was good as well, even Batman Vs Robin was decent enough. Really the only real bad ones are the first 2 JL films and Son Of Batman. Haven't watched the new SS film yet but i hear that's good as well.

      I'm not a fan of SoB as Deathstroke is awfully done and Damian somehow beats him but i do like the other two, Damian's voice grew on me over time (i hear his voice now if i'm reading Damian) and he did have some nice development what has gone over to the TT films.

      It is funny, and I agree with you, Damian was overpowered. I think they took his ninja training a bit far. Batman had the same training and years of experience, and even he had a tough fight against Damian. I can overlook that though.
      What is also funny, is quite the opposite with Nightwing and the DCAU overall. I swear, every movie he is in, he gets the shit beat of him. LOL. Deathstroke wipes the floor with him in the Lazarus storyline. What is up with the bat boys and their power levels? LOL

  JL felt like a Marvel movie. It felt wrong, all wrong. It reminded me of the GL movie. JL should've been approached more like Lord of the Rings. It's clear that's what ZACK wanted(the entire setup of JL is clearly heavily influenced by LotR), but WB wanted Avengers so we ended up with this goofy, stitched up monster that had no soul.

I think out of all the New 52 characters in the DCAU, Wonder Woman is the worst. It is really doesn't even look like the New 52 comics WW. She is the only one they really redesigned overall, and not for the better imo. I am not sure why they wanted to go with the ponytail and weird costume.

First of all I'm tired of all of the cursing in these animated movies. Also I'm a little confused, isn't The Death of Superman and Superman: Doomsday the same? Also I applaud DC with their animated movies, because they bring the comic to life, but again I can't deal with the cursing. Other than that, I wish it wouldn't take so long before the next movie comes out, but I can't wait until it does.
