Suicide Squad: Jai Courtney in talks for Deadshot, Will Smith rumored for Captain Boomerang, Tom Hardy for Rick Flag

November 12, 2014

Suicide Squad casting is beginning to come together quite nicely. Variety is reporting that Terminator: Genesys star Jai Courtney is currently in talks to play Deadshot. Will Smith smith has been rumored for a while now, and Variety says that he may be The Flash nemesis Digger Harkness a.k.a. Captain Boomerang. Tom Hardy is also rumored to be up for the role of Rick Flag.

This comes after the news that Warner Bros. is trying to get Jared Leto to sign on as the Joker, and that Margot Robbie has reportedly been cast as Harley Quinn. Jesse Eisenberg will likely reprise his Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice role as Lex Luthor.

Based on the DC comic book, the story centers on the team of super villains who are given a chance at redemption by the government. The catch: their mission will probably kill them all.

Suicide Squad is being directed by David Ayer and will hit theaters on August 5, 2016.

Now Deadline has said that Jai Courtney might not even be in Suicide Squad. So we got the 3 major trade sites saying completely different things.
Variety - Will Smith for Boomerang & Courtney for Deadshot.
THR - Will Smith and Courtney's roles are unknown at the moment.
Deadline - Courtney might not be in Suicide Squad, but he might be in another DC movie.

The good news is they will have to officially announce the cast pretty soon since this is a 2016 movie.

From what I've heard Smith has a hard time not being the lead in a movie, I find it hard to believe he would agree to play such an obscure character in a 5-8-character movie... They must be paying him really good if this is true

Not every, but I guess most of them are. I'm not judging him, dude is good at what he does, it's his job and he can dictate his terms. I'm just surprised is all :D

Chris can I believe this article, because THR is reporting something variety is reporting something else and deadline is also saying something else. No unity in industry information =misinformation or misdirection by WB.

Don't see Will Smith as Capt Boomerang... surely an Australian actor would make more sense?
Smith would make for an interesting Dead Shot, or maybe Bronze Tiger?

I just don't see Smith in this movie at all, he turned down Django Unchained because the main character "didn't get to kill the bad guy." So having him be one among five sharing the action just doesn't make sense to me.

Smith's star has faded significantly. He took a big hit from After Earth. Even MiB3 fell short of expectations. He's likely looking for a bit of career rehab. Being in a big superhero movie is an easy way to do that. And if he pulls off this villain role it not only leaves him with a few paychecks from future DCU movies, it opens up a whole new type of role he could play.

I still don't see it, but I've been wrong before. Smith has been boring since I Am Legend to be honest, (with the exception of Hancock perhaps.) I don't think it's a case of him getting his mojo back, perhaps he's lost it all together. It's a much different leading man now than what it was in the 90's when Smith was at the height of his fame. It's people like Robert DJ running things now, and the question is does he have what it takes to compete with that.

What movies? Soloist bombed, but that's about it, Due Date did alright for a comedy and Sherlock Homes one and two far exceeded expectations.

The Judge is one of those movies that just isn't going to pull in the numbers though, films like that just don't rock the box office.

It's all bullshit. No confirmations = no truth. Besides Margot Robbie, casting ideas suck anyway, WB can do better for Tom Hardy, HE should be deadshot or deathstroke. Not being a troll.

I hoped that Hardy will play Boomerang (although Hardy is English and Harkness is Australian). However, I thinks it fits better since next year we'll see him play another infamous awesome Australian character.

I am here for Will Smith just being apart of the universe. Two of my favorite entertainers (The Rock and Will Smith) would be apart of the DC Cinematic Universe with Batman. This is all just really exciting for me.

I can't for the life of me see how Captain Boomerang could fit into any semi-realistic universe. I mean, "Captain Boomerang?"

You know, I love this site, and think the authors do a pretty good job with content. But I would really like it if they found some moderators to ban the 13 year olds calling each other virgins and talking about each other's moms.

Will Smith as Captain Boomerang? He would be a much better Black Spider or Black Manta then Cpt. Boomerang.

I think which could be an interesting point to make which i havent seen anyone mention yet is the possibility of SMITH playing BLACK MANTA ,well ok not so much that but think about it if there is a possibility he is cast for the role of MANTA this should also mean his role "should" be reprised for the AQUAMAN movie.
