Warner Bros. wants Jared Leto to play the Joker in 2016's Suicide Squad, The Wrap reports. They first offered the role to Ryan Gosling, but apparently he turned it down. Warner Bros. is also trying to get Tom Hardy, Will Smith and Margot Robbie on board. Jesse Eisenberg is expected to appear as Lex Luthor as well.

Great actor.
The more I hear, the more comfortable i feel about this film!
Not only will it kick ass.. it will dissect it, bottle it and own it on the shelf, as a piece of history....not throwaway entertainment.
1) Solid cast?- check!
2) Script from an oscar winner? Check!
3) A Don composing the soundtrack? F***** check!
4) Smart, cautious and proven Studio? check!

Are you talking about Batman v Superman? I agree. But this is actually about Suicide Squad, which is shaping up surprisingly well with supposedly a loaded cast and a director who is perfect for the material.

Gosling is a fantastic actor I'm a big fan of him, but he's not AT ALL fitting for the Joker. Gosling is way too self aware (he forbids himself any green screen roles because he doesn't trust himself with it).
I didn't think of Leto at all, but he's a much better choice. I'd be fine with him. Especially with Ayer writing/directing.
I wanted, and still want, Bradley Cooper for it, I think he's PERFECT for it, but Marvel snatched him up.
What do you think of Adrian Broody as the Clown Prince of Crime?
Don't like that and have never liked that. Actually for the same reason as Gosling. Brody is a fantastic actor, no question about it (loved him in Grand Budapest this year), but both Gosling and Brody have a dry wit, they'd go toward a version that's kind of depressive and I fear it'd venture into a parody on emo/goth. They're both better at tragic parts.
I think Brody would be a great option for example Harvey Dent. He can go crazy, but Joker has no origin, joker is utterly empty and flamboyant. Not every actor is fit to play a part like that.
And no I didn't backlash on Heath back in the day, I was neutral on it because I couldn't tell. With Brody and Gosling both I'd genuinely say they're just not fit for him. You can say 'yeah but it's acting' yeah that's true but what does that mean? Should we then consider Vince Vaughn? Owen Wilson? Colin Firth? I just don't think Brody and Gosling fit the part. Not for any Joker I hope to see anyway.
I think Leto is a great choice, I can see him look incredibly creepy and cold without exerting any sense of tragedy in it and he has a very expressive nature. He's a musician too and I can already hear him humming creepy and ridiculous tunes. I never saw him coming for this part but especially after DBC, I think he's a top choice.
And on top of all of this we get Ayer, who's SUPER gritty and raw in tone. Him and Leto? I'm sold.
Even though Bradley Cooper remains my ideal choice. Look at photos of that guy laughing, he has one of the most perfect Joker smiles of any actor I can think of, and he's an impressionist, picture him in clowns make up and you'll jump out the nearest window how creepy that would get. He'd have to slim down though, Leto really has his bodily physique on top of his talent.

He would be great, but I want to see him play the Scarecrow. He would be so perfect as Dr. Crane, that it's almost a waste to cast him as any other villain, even the Joker.
Do me a favour mate, have you ever seen drive. Gosling would have been class. Great actor who can turn his talents to any role. Just as well Jared Leto would be just as good.

I would have prefered another actor...Adrien Brody could be a great casting. He can act and Actually looks a lot like the Joker. We already had a non comic book like Joker with Heath (Don't get me wrong, I loved his performance)
Actors looking like the characters is probably one of the last things people responsible for casting think about and with good reasons ;)

I'm talking about such ideas as casting Brody as Joker because of his jaw or Cranston as everything because he's bald and evil :) Fan-casting is fun, but it always comes down to putting an image of an actor who had played a similar character before or had a haircut that resembles the character and a picture of the character side by side. And if you get a shot of the actor making a face that looks a lot like the face the character's making in his picture then it's even better ;)
And I didn't say that the way an actor looks doesn't matter at all, did I? I said that it's one of the last things the care about. So it's something they care about, just not the most important thing.

The trade reported that Lex will be in this, after showing up in BVS. Charles Roven is producing as well. He's one the main producers for BVS.
As for Shazam, who knows.
Dwayne Johnson already said back in August that this film is connected to the others. Shazam is a New Line and WB film plus Shazam's release date was announced at the WB's stock market meeting. People are just taking that independence thing too far.

One thing that makes me think Shazam is connected is like you said it was announced along with the others, and if it wasn't connected why would you wait until 2019 to release it?
I think WB is doing things different than Marvel: allowing their writers and directors creative independence to do whatever with their characters (as long as no contradictions are made).
Marvel doesn't do the same? I haven't heard about that. I know there's that Wright incident, but that falls more under "contradictions" then stifling creativity.
These characters will be in the films down the line. Of course Ben and Zach will have input. Ben is supposed to direct and write at some point.

Too comic booky is a complaint about a comic book movie? I think Leto will play an awesome comic joker! People loved ledger but his role (while performed amazingly) was far enough from the comic joker that a new actor can come in and make a joker that is almost completely unrelated from ledger but still just as cool/interesting.
Everyone would have to play a comic character in a comic movie. If the comic or source material didn't exist neither would the role. He could make the character his own within a set of parameters of the script and direction. Which will probably be a familiar characterization (comic joker)

He also toured the hospital where the victims of that CO shooting & there's a clip on line where he called into the hospital where a huge Bat-fan child was diagnosed (I think with cancer) & they talked about Batman. All things that were released by alternate sources, not his camp.

WB is giving free-domain to David Ayer (and probably the other writers and directors), a big difference between the DC approach and Marvel approach (See Edgar Wright.)
Yes, Marvel greatly restricts writers and directors a lot of (most) of the time (Also see Patty Jenkins and Jon Favreau). But when they prove themselves to Marvel, they end up trusting them a lot and giving them plenty of creative freedom (see Anthony & Joe Russo, Joss Whedon, and most importantly James Gunn). It's not like they're completely restrictive.
how is Wright's situation not contradicting, which you indicated previously is something WB wouldn't allow its writers & directors?
So, if Ayer stated "I want Suicide Squad to be like the tone & feel of Dumb & Dumber, and mostly self-contained" WB isn't going to have an issue with it?
I like how the Wright situation has become the line in the sand to "prove" Marvel is running a communist movie studio.
I hope so; an un-centrally-planned approach would be refreshing and likely lead to very interesting stories and character depictions.

Why would The Joker even BE in a Suicide Squad movie? Unless it's some flashback to set up Harley or something it seems really weird that you'd debut the new Joker in a non-Batman movie.
There's no reason joker couldn't be in it but argus (the department that runs the suicide squad) would be insane to trust him out in the public. He's cunning and unpredictable. But it does feel odd to get him apart from batman first. Maybe they wanted to get a new comic bookish joker out there but not have to focus another batman movie on the joker and get another villain in the light (come on riddler!) it hasn't even been 7 years since ledger, so why tie up another batman movie with joker! He's cool and we want to see him but batman has a huge rogues gallery!

Leto's involvement is classic actor strategy.
He likely passed on Dr. Strange because what Oscar-winning actor wants to be contractually-bound for maybe a decade to a third-tier, C+ level character?
Take the gig as the Joker and you only have to show up as seasoning in the stew and are guaranteed to steal every scene you are in, even if you are signed to three to five films. It's a lock for audience interest.
And really, playing a narcissist versus a sociopath? That's a casting no-brainer.

People should really stop using actors as sources. They are not always in the know in all the behind the scenes machinations. Look at the Cyborg dude. He didn't find out they were making a Cyborg until they announced it.
I don't mean whether hes right or not, just the concept brought up by it. That it could be that the movies aren't all in the same universe. It could very well be that they are, I'm just worried that they aren't, cause I want them to be in the same continuum.
what about the multiverse? They could potentially do an infinite crisis storyline...which would be AWESOME!
The fact is though, if eisenberg is in it, then it's shared. That being said, who ever plays the joker in it will be part of batflecks universe. WB wouldn't hire separate jokers. Who evers hired as the joker will be the joker across the board.

Second big announcement incoming. Ray Fisher's tweet Tuesday and Leto's quotes from the Hollywood Reporter article:
"I do [have my eye on one project.] I am excited about what's happening," Leto told the trade. "There are incredible opportunities and I'm very grateful for them. I'm looking forward to making films again now that the tour is wrapping up. It's going to be an exciting 2015." Of course, Leto wouldn't offer any details about the said project: "I've sworn to keep my mouth shut but I think that very shortly there will be something to talk about, that's for sure."
