Jason Momoa hints at an anti-hero Aquaman in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (video)

We haven't heard it from Warner Bros. yet, but every reliable website online says that Jason Momoa is playing Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He didn't really deny it when asked about it by Jimmy Kimmel recently, and now he may have hinted as to what we can expect from his interpretation of the character.

While speaking at the Evolution Expo this past weekend, Momoa was asked how he feels about playing a superhero like Aquaman. This was his reply:

I think it would be really, really fun to play a superhero. You know? I’ve always talked about, like, what’s your favorite. I mean I love Lobo so… but ah… You know. It would be awesome. I don’t know how they do it but… Yea, absolutely I think it would…I just don’t really see myself as a superhero. Yeah, no I mean, they’re kind of written a little different. I don’t know. I just… you know. I’m not wearing a lot of the…I don’t see myself in tights a lot. And ah… I'm more of a, I don’t know, an anti-hero if you will. In life. So, not the smiling, parading to saving the world kind of guy.

Aquaman has been portrayed as an anti-hero in the comics, and the recent Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice rumors point to this as well. Apparently Aquaman is not too happy about what the World Engine in Man of Steel did to the Indian Ocean.

Oh please, PLEASE! let it be someone else!! Have you seen The Flash Pilot?? He is like 13 years old!! We need a grown up Flash who can kick asses and be the comic relief at the same time. Not some unknown teenager!

  As long as the Flash in this DCCU is Wally West. He'd bring a nice lightness and humor to the team. I know humor doesn't always make a solid superhero film (*cough cough* Marvel's Iron Man 3), but it wouldn't hurt if it was there and properly done.

      I would prefer him more than Aaron Paul who's Breaking Bad impresion is still fresh on people's mind. If not Gosling? Who? Don't come here saying no to an actor if you don't have an alternative. And about Eisenberg, I'm pretty confident he will rock the role.

      Me either, that 300 sequel went to DVD pretty fast so that's never a good sign. Django Unchained did fairly well and it took 2 years to get on movie channels.

Yes I couldn't agree more, I love Agents Of SHIELD but I will be the first to admit because of it being joined to the movie verse it was a complete and utter mess until the movie came out. I would much rather see the movies and (even though I'm not a fan of Arrow anymore, haven seen Flash yet so I can't comment on that one) the tv shows have freedom.

Hopefully the don't call him Aquaman more than once in the movie. Arthur or King Arthur. Too cheesy for me.

That said, I hope they portray Arthur as an ultimate badass king, totally in charge. No origin story of Arthur on land ever. From the getgo have him be a King. I want him to burst onto the surface like a boss and waltz straight up to the United Nations and tell them what's up. Sort of like the Justice League TV show. People seem to forget how badass Aquaman was in that show. HE CUT HIS FUCKING HAND OFF TO SAVE HIS KID!! Then he had a hook. And I don't think he smiled once in that series.

I wonder if any of the characters will be referred to as their name. Technically in MoS, Superman was only referred to as Superman half way by Lois and by the female soldier in side comment. So will Bruce Wayne call himself or be referred to as Batman whilst in Gotham? Or Wonder Woman and Cyborg when they show up? Because I feel Synder is really going for that realistic but comic book canon versions of these characters.

      While they are still at odds, he will call him Kal or Kryptonian (similar to Lex). When they become friends and Bats accepts Supes as an adopted Earthling, he will switch to Clark.

People forgot how bad ass Aquaman has been in EVERYTHING. For some reason, the only version of Aquaman anybody wants to acknowledge is the Superfriends one. People are going to be in for a rude awakening when JL hits. I predict people are going to come out of this movie talking about Aquaman the way people came out of Avengers taking about Hulk.

  I just realised while reading you're comment that I always had in my mind that Aquaman was the p***y of the group, but thinking about it...I don't actually ever remember thinking that when seeing him on screen/comics. I think it's just sort of a pop culture view "Aquaman, yeah that guy from the sea" People forget he is a KING, bad ass, in charge, commanding, he's basically the King Leonidas of the sea. Introduce him by rising out of the ocean and Supes and Bats giving each other a "who the hell is this" look, then seeing him take charge of the waves and just rushing forward and they look at each other as if "Ok, no messing man".

Me personally, I'm riding on the Heath Ledger whim that Synder and his casting directors knew what they were doing when they casted Lex Luthor, Batman, and Wonder Woman

I feel like the angle Luthor is going to go for is to try to ruin Superman's image because Superman ruined his image of being the "model human being". They could also bring Bizarro back from Htrae with a Doomsday or Branaic combo team for the Justice League Movie

Dang, you need to contact Snyder with that idea, the Zod coming back as Bizarro thing sounds legit, but because I doubt Shannon would do this type of movie again, they would have to twist his looks to look Shannon-ish and you know how Hollywood does with rushed plot make-up or does someone need me to run footage of Joseph Gordon Levitt from Looper trying to make me believe he's Bruce Willis with bad make-up and an almost worse wanna be Bruce Willis tone?

Yeah that's the route I think they are going, I think after a few scuffles with Metallo(ending with either Clark escaping or Metallo escaping) Superman will be bested by him in their last scuffle and Batman will be presented with a choice by Lex to either join him, or help get Metallo off of Clark and then he'll think about it deep (perhaps in a tense, This is a slow mo in my head of the choice I'm obviously going to make thing.) and help Superman, but then something else happens which requires Gadot to spring in to Wonder Woman for the final 10 minutes of the movie. I would freak the FREAK OUT if she got done saving the day while Superman and Batman were distracted and they rush to her to find out who she is and she instantly asks Superman and Batman "So...what can you do?" That would be a most awesome button moment. You know that line WILL be said in this movie. Somewhere.

Kryptonite is old and very over done. I always thought the idea of Metallo being a mini world engine. I.e making his own atmosphere to weaken Supes, just like what happens on Zods ship.

      Most great actors are psychos, I consider myself ok(my range of characters is not limited to certain types, I keep characters in my head to whip out during an improv session), thus I am a bit mentally off. I'm sound and logical without provocation though, I have to be physically provoked to really get really crazy, or be driving. I hate evil, but Bradley Cooper is kind of an insult to real actors. I'm sure you've heard of Alan Rickman only you just don't realize, he is Snape in Harry Potter, Hanz Gruber in Die Hard, ALMOST EVERYONE in British theatre productions, and he was The Metatron in Dogma.

  Yes, i said that. He totally fits in the anti-hero profile types as Lobo for instance. Or some villain. My guess at the time is that he could be Lobo. But here, i don't think he's talking about Aquaman at all, but if he does, well, i think we'll see a pretty radical approach on the character!

      So you need class to be in a movie? You, like so many others, give these celebs too much power. They are people on a screen pretending to be someone else. Why are you judging the guy? Why waste so much energy worrying about someone else's comments and how they will make them look? Is he a buddy of yours? Does his actions/words some how have an impact on your life other than entertainment? That's what we are talking about here: Entertainment. Fun. If you dont find what he does or how he does it fun and entertaining, cast your attention elsewhere.

Aquaman can easily be presented as an anti-hero and has been many times. Aquaman's allegiance is to Atlantis and the undersea world first and foremost. So sometimes that puts him at odds with the land based world and against the rest of the JL.

  yep. I think too many people are looking at him from Brave and Bold cartoon and the old Superfriends. The relationship you describe matches how they portrayed the character in the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated series a few years ago quite well. That is likely going to be his relationship here too. I dont see him jumping out of the water ready to fight bad guys beside Supes and Bats and WW unless there is an interest to Atlantis.

I dunno, imo Lobo would be highly hilarious in a bad way for this film. I dunno, BvS ia not a comedy type of movie for a character like Lobo to play in. I will accept: Doomsday or jusr Aquaman and Dwayne Johnson would just be perfect for Black Adam! So right! If Jason plays Doomsday, I hope Luthor brings him to Earth!!!!

Perhaps because said contract says that he's not allowed to confirm his role. Pretty simple logic.

He literally says he has no idea how they'll approach the character.

Also, you can tell he has no idea how badass Aquaman really is.

jason momoa would be awesome as aquaman! he's an excellent actor who is more than suitable to star as any superhero. He was an awesome as the new Conan. It was a botched movie but he was really good.

Aquaman's personality is way different than Superman and Batman. He's has no mantra of fear or justice. He's a king for f*ck's sake. And the ruler of the seven seas does only one thing - to protect his realm. A Drogo attitude with 300 cinematic would be a perfect Momoa Aquaman. That is of course under the assumption that the movie has a deep story.

Arthur as more of anti hero type sounds good to me. Just as long as Momoa plays the medium ling haired and bearded version of Aquaman and wears more of a warrior king type of armor...than all should be well and good
