After what seems like years of rumors and fancasting, it’s finally official: Jason Momoa has gone from playing Aquaman to the Main Man.

Momoa himself has confirmed that he has been tapped to portray Lobo in the new cinematic DC Universe, with an Instagram post that has the simple caption of “they called.” Deadline have verified that the Czarnian bounty hunter/anti-hero/lover of space dolphins will appear alongside Milly Alcock’s Supergirl in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, though considering he did not appear in the comic of the same name it is not clear how he will factor into the story.

Then again, plot details for the film are scarce for now, with hardly more than cast and crew announcements coming out up to this point. Given the plot of the comic-- from writer Tom King, artist Bilquis Evely, colorist Matheus Lopes, and letterer Clayton Cowles-- it would be fairly easy to plug in a character like Lobo, who plies his trade by hunting bounty all across the universe. Stay tuned to Batman News for more details as we hear them.

Milly Alcock has been cast as Supergirl, Eve Miller as Ruthye Mary Knolle, and Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hill. Craig Gillespie will be directing.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, just under a year after Supermanhits on July 11, 2025. Filming on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is expected to kick off in early 2025.

How is this not meant to confuse general audiences when he was playing Aquaman just last year? In a universe where Aquaman and Peacemaker have interacted!
    Safe, safe casting.

Well Its also considered perfect casting by many and one that always should have happened over Aquaman. Either way, Lobo would involve makeup and stuff so some of Momoa's likeness would be hidden at least.

People seem to really like Jason Momoa so idk if that baggage really matters with him. Besides, its not like actors haven't played multiple comic book characters before. Plus, you say Aquaman " just last year", but by the time this movie comes out it will have been like 3 years tbf.

It is what it is. A lot of people wanted Jason as Lobo, so this only really seems to be a win for a lot of fans.

So which blue-eyed blond trying his damnedest to not come off as a total dork gets to be Aquaman now?

Aquaman needed a guy like Jason Momoa to make it cool. Lobo does not. Lobo is already cool. They turned a strength of the former Aquaman casting into a weakness, and they gained nothing.

It should go without saying that this is not MY comment. It's the same fvcking troll as always, posting under my name. This is not the first time. Nothing has ever been done about any of this snotwad's behavior.

Fvcking tired of this site letting itself go like this.

But you enjoy wearing your tin-foil hat while hilariously pretending anyone gives the slightest toss to use your name when making basic common sense replies to one of your fellow terminally-online clueless crybabies. Wow, such "trolling" XD XD XD

Terminally Online Triggered Dork uses another commenter's name to attack a different commenter. And then calls the person whose name he took a "Terminally Online Triggered Dork" which is an amusing example of projection. I guess we'll be seeing many more fake-name contributions from this person, because junior high school is closed for the holidays, and he's got lots of free time.

The bad fan-casting was 10 years ago when Snyder released a muted bleak image of "Aquaman" coated in tattoos while looking like a drug-lord serial killer.

Meanwhile, Momoa as Lobo was logically-cast due to actual intelligent factors such as him having similar personality traits both in real life and in the majority of movies he's been in; he's a huge fan of the character so he knows the role inside and out; the fans actually want him to be Lobo (giving fans what they want is just the worst! LOL); and there have been countless other logical character castings throughout the years where the majority of people agreed a certain actor had to be the one for the role and (huge shock) they end up getting cast and it becomes one of their most iconic roles.

But you have a fun day in opposite land getting butthurt over an objectively great creative decision.

The word that comes to mind reading this nonsense is "overcompensation". It's not some stroke of brilliance. It's not some genius maneuver. It's a typical fan-cast for every nerd who even cares (and there aren't many). So spare me.

          ChE_MovieFan

All Jason Momoa can do is play himself. Aquaman needed that. Lobo doesn't. It's a very boring case of casting to type, even ignoring the baggage.

        3. Kara Avatar
          Kara

That should be the tagline for the DCU in general

      2. ChE_MovieFan Avatar
        ChE_MovieFan

It's a bad example of casting to type is what it is. The Aquaman role/film needed exactly what Momoa gave it, which is why the first movie worked. Mainstream audiences never have taken Aquaman seriously. Aquaman needed Jason Momoa basically playing himself, which is the extent of his range.

Lobo is more about presentation and effects. You could have a dozen actors playing Lobo. Very few actors could've made Aquaman actually kinda cool and badass. Lobo doesn't need Jason Momoa just playing Jason Momoa in a mocap suit.

        1. Josh Morgan Avatar
          Josh Morgan

Idk what else to say. People have wanted Jason Momoa as Lobo for years. Jason has wanted Lobo for years. Many fans think he was born for the role. Would be a shame to just let it go all because of Aquaman. Can't see much issue here unless you distinctly have a problem with Jason playing himself or whatever. Honestly it seems a bit silly NOT to expect this to have happened eventually. Like, im sorry, but the people who are seriously against this are probably the minority by a considerable margin.

Regarding future Aquaman casting...to be clear, Aquaman has been "cool" before Jason Momoa. Even when Jason was cast most people attributed the concept to the 90s version where he was typically shirtless, had long hair and a beard, and hook for a hand(also seen in Justice League Unlimited). Imo Aquaman never "needed" Jason Momoa specifically. As you say for Lobo, there are also plenty of actors who could have done that take on the character justice.

          1. ChE_MovieFan Avatar
            ChE_MovieFanreplying to Josh Morgan

I expected it, and I criticized it when it was rumored. You can still get a ton of guys to play Lobo. It doesn't have to be Jason Momoa. If it's a feel-good move meant to please the crowds, what's that actually worth? We never get fancasts that pan out, and we always get over it. And at least with other actors who played multiple superhero characters, most of them had the acting chops to do more than just the same thing. Jason Momoa is the same guy in everything he's in. So, yeah, it's a little more of an issue, even though this has happened several times before (because we're out of actors, apparently).

Aquaman has never been considered cool by the mainstream audience. "Oh, this New 52 run is great! Hey, I like the new pirate look with the hook hand and all!" They've had to do those things because the perception is of a joke character. That's the baggage Momoa let them shed, because while he's not a great actor he is a great persona with a badass look. Now we're gonna get a 'comics accurate' pretty boy in a leotard riding a giant seahorse in a James Gunn production. What are the odds that's played straight?

          2. Josh Morgan Avatar
            Josh Morganreplying to ChE_MovieFan

Well, like I said, people always thought Momoa should have been Lobo precisely because it fits his personality and vibe. Him playing himself is exactly why they think he is a great fit for this particular character. I don't blame Gunn for thinking the same, even to the extent of being unbothered by the past in order to make way for a perfect casting. If there is fault to be had here for Momoa saturation or whatever, it's on the previous regime for casting him as Aquaman when somebody else could have made it work. No they wouldn't have been Jason Momoa, but they could have still brought legitimacy to the character in the eyes of casual audiences. Marvel made tons of obscure and strange properties work while still being very faithful to their comic counterparts. Aquaman was going to debut in Justice League either way so people would get a chance to see him in action with other more popular characters before his solo outing.

Idk man. You can choose to keep being cynical towards what DC is doing or try to see the positive in a fresh start for this brand, regardless if everything isn't exactly to your preference. The DCU has barely even started. Give it a chance at least. Sure, I am in wait and see mode for now, but am generally optimistic. The DCEU became exhausting and I am kind of tired of the negativity and bitterness both amongst the fandom and from myself. So I am just going to try to enjoy the ride as much as I can now. If you don't mind me saying though, you seem kind of hard to please? I mean you don't seem to particularly like Gunn much or his SS movie which to me is easily one of best things the DCEU did. You don't like a casting choice that most people think is perfect and have wanted for years. You don't even like the The Batman from what I have seen. What DO you like?

          3. ChE_MovieFan Avatar
            ChE_MovieFanreplying to Josh Morgan

Casting Momoa as Aquaman was one of the very few actually good decisions the DCEU made. And I don't want to be a broken record on the reasons for that, but by that same token he's not the only actor who could play Lobo. Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Norman Reedus, Jon Bernthal, etc., there are a number of personas for that part. Everyone wanted John Krasinski and Emily Blunt to be the MCU's Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. And they're not (save for a one-off for the former). And people moved on. It's unimportant that fans wanted Momoa for the role. Fancasts never pan out, and no one really cares.

James Gunn has a philosophy on superhero movies that he's previously expressed that "The silliness is what's real". Meaning, that's why he does 'comics accuracy', especially with the ludicrous stuff that shouldn't work, because if someone walked in wearing a silver toilet bowl on their head most people would look at them like they're crazy. That was Peacemaker. "You think you're cool? You're a maniac." But in a real world setting, he simply wouldn't dress like that. That's the challenge of turning a comic book superhero into a cinematic property, finding the live action version of something. With Gunn, if something doesn't translate in a sensible manner to live action, he's not going to translate it into a form that works (like Momoa did as Aquaman), he's going to satirize it. He's going to revel in all its goofiness.

What I liked is when superhero movies were much less frequent, and they were made with the considerations of any other movie. "Why", "How", "Who", "For what?" What is the heart of the property, and how do the trappings of cinema align to dig that out? That's what I miss. That's 2000s-2010s or so, give or take. I feel like that has been lost for the last decade-plus to shared universes and fan-overservicing. It's been lost to gimmicks like meme-farming (moments in movies which are clearly and inorganically meant to 'go viral' as a meme template) and post-credit scenes.

The Batman was made to be a real movie, and I applaud that. I just didn't like the execution or agree with much of the logic. It didn't seem to be making the right creative decisions. It seemed to be making the creative decisions that other Batman movies hadn't made. It's the "rebootitis" creeping in, like with The Amazing Spider-Man, where it's just forced to work around the margins.

I mean that's pretty much as perfect as casting gets, he basically looks like Lobo all the time. I'm sure with all the makeup and costume on the general public will not be like "omg isn't that Aquaman".

Actually the general public probably forgot those Aquaman movies even existed seeing as the last one was seen by 12 people.

I have nothing against either the character Lobo or the casting of Momoa... but this is only a very small role I hope. I happen to like Woman of Tomorrow and have been hoping that with King as scriptwriter the adaptation will hew close to the source.

Do they not have confidence in a female led film that isn't Wonder Woman or Harley?
