HBO's upcoming The Penguin series will give us some idea of where The Batman: Part II is going to take us.
In a new interview with SFX, director Matt Reeves offered some updates on the upcoming film. While he mentioned that they are currently prepping to film the movie in early 2025 he also shared we will soon see some hints at the story. "There are details that actually connect right into the way the next movie begins, and the way that Oz enters that world as we hand the baton back to Batman, and Batman is on another case," said Reeves.
He went on to add, "these stories to be a meditation on the way Gotham is the way it is. It’s such a brutal place and we’re digging for the answers as to why these people’s lives are this way."
As to what the actual story of the film will be, Reeves said that it's "going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie, and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see."
"Batman is constantly battling these forces," he added. "But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that."
For now, the only officially confirmed actors returning for the sequel are Robert Pattinson and Farrell. Although not officially named as of yet, Andy Serkis has made it fairly clear he will be returning to the role of Alfred Pennyworth.
The Batman hit theaters on March 4, 2022 and went on to earn $765.95 million dollars globally. The franchise will next expand in September with the release of The Penguin. There is already talk of possible expansions beyond these projects with Matt Reeves planning for his micro-universe that will be known as the "Batman Epic Crime Saga."
The Batman: Part II is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 2, 2026.
