DC Comics Announces New Birds of Prey Series with Cassandra Cain

On Monday, June 5th, writer Kelly Thompson took to Twitter to announce that she would be writing a new Birds of Prey series for DC Comics, releasing in September. The artwork will be done by artist Leonardo Romero, who revealed a first look at Black Canary, the new leader of the team.

Kelly Thompson teased that there would be a total of 5 members for the new team at the start of the book, using different colored hearts to hint at who they would be. Today, she revealed that the black heart represented Cassandra Cain, who would be making her debut on the team.

This would be the very first time Cassandra Cain has appeared on the Birds of Prey team. In 2020, Cassandra Cain made an appearance in the movie Birds of Prey: and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, but did not become a part of the team. Instead, she chose to follow Harley Quinn as her "apprentice". In comics, Cass has recently been part of a team of "Batgirls" in the book of the same name by Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad, as well as DC's Spirit World comic written by Alyssa Wong.

Thompson promised the rest of the team and details for the book would be announced throughout the week. What do you think of having a new Bird of Prey relaunch?

Cassandra Cain is one of those characters I think I just missed the boat on. Everyone talks about how awesome she is, but I've never really been exposed to anything that explains her or features her. She's basically up there with Spoiler and Signal in terms of Bat Family characters that feel like unnecessary fluff

Just read the original 'Batgirl' series in order to get the hype about the character (yes, she got her own solo series before Barbara or Steph)

Not interested, but that's just me. I don't like team books and I'm not into these characters.

Cass getting farmed out to the BoP is another nail in the coffin of my theory that there will be a Bat-Family book by 2024 to catch all the spares.

Maybe after Ram V run, Detective Comics can be the Bat-Family book... similar to Action Comics.

  They could do that, but I'd prefer to see 'Tec written as a detective book starring Batman with minimal Bat-Family interference. The more Bat-Family you add to a book, the more it becomes about action set pieces and bickering. I want there to be just one Batman ongoing that ISN'T taken over by a crowd of legacy characters.

    I think everyone has crossover fatigue, and rightly so. I want my Batman books to be about Batman. Cameo appearances are allowed to happen, but they should be cameos and not more main characters. Is it so much to ask that a comic book focuses on the titular character? If you want to focus on Batman & Robin, you should name the book that.

      The worst of it is that it won't be Batman and Robin. It will be Batman and a Robin and Bluebird and Huntress and a Batgirl and Nightwing and Batwoman and Duke. (Is Duke still around? He could have died and I wouldn't have noticed.)

It all depends if she gets her voice right.

Thompson has been writing Captain Marvel for about a decade and her character writing can get a bit... homogeneous (all her characters start talking a bit similarly after a while)

There are two red hearts left hinting at the fourth and fifth member. Red Canary, Katana, Barbara, Harley? Any other ideas?

  I don't know much about Zealot either, but she seems to have a similar "toxic upbringing" to Cassandra and Barda - having this common theme could really bring some extra spice to the group...
