Interesting. No qualms with the actor at all;.

People are going to talk about the racebending, but it kind of makes sense since the character is a reincarnation of an Ancient Egyptian. Despite what some "Proud Boy" types might claim, discrimination in Hollywood is still an issue, and this type of casting goes a long way to combat that.

I think it's especially fine with Hawkman who like Wonder Woman has had his origin changed constantly leading to a ton of inconsistencies. It's not like anything is really set in stone with the character.

What's really ind of interesting is continuing to introduce all these costumed characters that were present in the past but never mentioned in previous movies lessens Man of Steel.

Agreed. Him being white made less sense. He looked like Bruce Wayne on the JL cartoon. I wasn’t a fan of that. It’s nice to get some different appearances.
I was wondering about time frame too. Because if Black Adam was imprisoned during Shazam, how could his film take place before? Was he imprisoned twice?

    Yeah I never collected Hawkman comics, so he only appears sparingly in my collection of JLA and other Justice League titles. The cartoon show gave me more background than anything I’ve read. But yeah it seems convoluted to say the least. Alien, reincarnation of several lifetimes, wings apart of his body, wings apart of his costume, JLA member, JSA member. I just think it’s great that he’s not gonna be big white dude with black hair. It’s nice to have some variety in hero appearance.

      True. I think he might be black on Earth 27, but you’re right, some people will probably have a problem with it. Ancient Egyptian ties to the character allows me to be ok with a non white actor, but I’m more interested in the costume, weapons, and attitude than his genealogy.

  When it comes to time frame stuff, I don't really get why MoS decided not to address any other in universe stuff. It would be one thing if it was the building blocks for something new, and there was no in-universe history of costumed heroes or villains, and batman started his career *after Superman similar to Year One...that would all make sense.
  Instead, each subsequent movie reveals that there were more and more costumed public figures operating in the past, out in the open. It makes the film seem very strange that young Clark would not be interested in these figures, and it makes the context of Pa Kent's speech even stranger.
  Just more evidence of poor planning. I know it isn't what you meant at all but I wanted to remark on it.

    No yeah you’re right. They dug a weird hole with that decision. Who was young Clark imitating when he had the red towel around his neck was a question that popped into my head, while still disappointed he let his father die and mother be alone and broke working at coffee house. Definitely some questionable decisions. They should have planned some things out or at least hired script doctor to help them realize they might be painting themselves into a corner.

      IIRC the red cape was from a comic he was reading that had some generic hero character (I don't think it was anything like a Superman type character).
      I think it's just evidence they didn't have a plan for the universe going forward. We already saw that with Batman V Superman I guess. I mean, why in the world wasn't Wonder Woman helping save people in Metropolis?
      DC characters are different from Marvel in that most of the core character are already known from other TV shows, cartoons or movies. They didn't need to build up an MCU like universe, they could have jumped into an established universe and just shown us more corners of it with subsequent movies. Oh well.

      Flashpoint could not only open up the multiverse, but also retcon some of the inconsistencies that plague us. But you never know. Even the MCU screwed up some time frame issues and George Lucas contradicted himself in prequels. In a world with Superman, it’s kinda hard to explain why he isn’t helping in every DC film, at least when the stakes are high.

      I'm really hoping Flashpoint is a hard reboot and recent comments from producers on that film seemed to confirm that when they said it resets everything.
      I agree about shared universe heroes not helping in each others films. The problem is when you have universe ending threats equal to the threat in the team up films without a team up or explanation. To use the MCU as an example, Dr Strange was well done with the threat he faced, it was unique to his world and skills and the other avengers would have been out of place. That wasn't the case for Iron Man 3 or Thor 2, where several other team mates could have helped and the stakes were high enough that they should have.

    I'm well versed in history. Even have a Masters degree focusing specifically on Ancient Egypt. so let me tell you you're wrong. The Assyrian rule was brief and came very late in the history of Ancient Egypt.
    Fact is most scholars will tell you that Ancient Egypt was as diverse as it is today, with different skin colors in different regions. Certainly there were dark skinned black people in Ancient Egypt.
    Regardless, a dark skinned black man makes far more sense than a Caucasian of European descent, which is pretty much a race that most assuredly was not a part of Ancient Egypts demographics.
    Although as someone else pointed out, since he is reincarnated he could be reincarnated into any body, even an East Asian.

  Ancient Egyptian Dna tests show they don't share much Sub Saharan African DNA so yes, they'd look quite similar to current Northern Africans. However there are Egyptian Pharaohs who where definitely black but they are the minority.

    They weren’t Arabs for sure. The first Pharaoh was from upper Egypt (southern). If you look at the art, the pharaohs were dark skin and their wives were light skin. Basically their culture were mixed, not like the homogeneous Arabs of today.

      That's not true for most Pharaohs though. There's a clear distinction between the norm and dark skinned people in Egyptian art. They definitely where present in Egypt but there is no reason to believe they would be any more present than they are today in the region. Also, yes they probably did look like modern day Egyptians.

      There's a pretty clear difference between Nubians (Sub Saharan Africans) and Egyptians in art. Those two other light skinned men are All North African/Middle Eastern. Ancient North Africa is not as black as you might think

  I am form Argentina, a melting pot of cultures and countries, you can literally find any race from any country walking down the street and nobody cares.
  Of course there might be some racism, assholes are everywhere in the world, but nobody cares about that here.
  Besides that is not my point, i care about characters of adaptations looking as close as the source as possible and nothing else, i dont like race/gender bending just because.

The answer is Hawkman has never been black. Prince Khufu was originally Egyptian and has been reincarnated many times (he’s been shown in the past as a knight, gunslinger, police detective, etc.). However, he never actually became Hawkman until the 1940s when he was reincarnated as Carter Hall...who is a white American archeologist. Although his backstory has been changed many times, the actual superhero known as Hawkman has always been depicted as white.

I don't agree with cancel culture, I think rational arguments are always the way to go, but there is a pretty big difference between casting a black actor to portray a white character and the reverse, given the problems black people have had with racism and representation.
The people that make the kind of jokes saying Hollywood should cast a white person as Black Panther are wholly ignorant of the politics and context in which those decisions are made. So yes, people complaining are pretty close to "gamer fanboys" or more accurately, 4chan trolls.

  I just don't buy that. Sorry. First of all, racial breakdown of movie characters shows around 13% of them are black. Black Americans also make up 13% of the US population, so where exactly is the issue? People then often say "okay, but those are minor roles". Also, untrue. Despite the asinine "OscarsSoWhite" campaign, statistics showed that black people made up around 12% of nominations at the time. I haven't seen updated numbers, but considering the massive push for more black representation the last 6 or so years, I have no doubt these numbers have risen dramatically. As far as behind the camera goes, looking at the data provided by the director's guild of America, female/minority directors actually had a BETTER chance of directing (at least in terms of TV shows) than white male directors. (It went like this: minority men > minority women > white women > white men).
  I see absolutely no evidence that black people have been "excluded", at least for the last few decades. Even if they "only" made up 5% of all movie roles & nominations, I still would not see the issue. Lack of representation isn't even remotely the same as discrimination. If that weren't the case, the NBA should be accused of being ridiculously racist towards any other race other than blacks. Blacks in the NBA are the single most overrepresented demographic in any profession ever, yet there has never been a case made for a "white quota" or a certain level of "white representation". Just to be clear, I have ZERO issue with blacks dominating the NBA. I just think it's telling how white "overrepresentation" is somehow proof of racism, but black overrepresentation is completely fine.
  I think all of this is a highly American and/or close-minded way of looking at the world. People outside America don't think this way and don't care. Do you think Europeans feel represented by white American characters by virtue of their race? Think again. Black Americans have far more in common with their white countrymen than Europeans do. That's a fact. So I'm tired of pretending I must feel "represented" as a European (whose primary language isn't English, tbc) by American characters. Africans also, couldn't care less & the Asian market neither.

Hollywood has zero issue with race-swapping what "should be" white characters, especially when it comes to European cultures, even those with historical/cultural settings. You look at shows like The Witcher, with an explicitly Polish setting with old European/Medieval roots, and we're supposed to pretend like it's normal that Africans and Middle-Easterners are completely ordinary in that world? This makes as much narrative sense as having a white demographic in Wakanda. Or how about the new Little Mermaid film, which is based on Northern European folklore (and are about the palest whites to walk the Earth) and how they cast a black girl to play the lead? Or probably the worst offender, what about the BBC Troy show, and how they cast a black guy to play Achilles? One of the most significant & infamous ancient Greek/European heroes of all time? Why does "respecting the culture" not matter in any of those cases, but when it comes to Black Panther, a fictional country invented by white Americans, it would be an outrage to cast white people? I'm not saying I want that to happen. I'm saying there's blatant hypocrisy.

Again, the justification that "context matters b/c blacks need more representation and have been excluded" is just not true from a purely statistical standpoint.       You are taking the PBS figure out of context. A study of 30,000 characters is not the same as an examination of ALL characters, which is obviously unrealistic. And how many of those characters played slaves or prisoners or some negative shit? That matters. Not all roles are equal.

      It's a controversial topic so it warrants a more mature, thought out and yes, lengthy reply. I'm not taking anything out of context. Those were 30.000 characters based on the top 100 movies in one decade. That's not a random (nor small) sample size. And in any case, it's irrelevant, as the Hollywood Diversity Report (which is also, heavily biased towards progressive ideology) clearly showed that for LEAD roles (which is a much more select category than movie roles in general so this "not all roles are equal" argument does not stand up to scrutiny), whites make up 72% compared to their 65% population size. If that is the extent of black oppression in Hollywood, I truly could not care less. Also, the white demographic size is quite misleading, as British actors (almost 90% of whom are white) make up a massive portion of Hollywood actors. That's roughly another 60 million white people you could theoretically add to the overall white demographic. There are also the Australians (80% white) so that's another 20 million whites. I wouldn't really count the rest of Europe b/c they don't have English as their primary language & don't really make up a significant part of Hollywood, but if I would, that would be another 700+ million people, 95+% of whom are white. If you add up all those white demographics, then arguably white people are not overrepresented at all in Hollywood. But if you want to limit the numbers to the US/UK only, be my guest... my point still stands.
      By the same logic, men are also drastically overrepresented b/c almost ALL minor movie characters who are just there to get killed, be criminals or be abused are male. What happens to this "not all roles are equal" rhetoric then? Suddenly that doesn't matter b/c male domination is a "problem" regardless. How does that work?

It actually makes sense for the character. In fact, I have no real issue with race-swapping in general (unless the character's look is iconic or if their race is important to the story, as is the case with characters like Black Panther... but also: Achilles or Zeus).       You raise an interesting point about what "representation" means. Because if we rely on the US statistic, then a representative movie would have 10 characters, out of which 7 are white, 1 is black, 1 is latino, 1 is asian, 5 men, 5 women, 9 straight, 1 gay, 9 religious, 1 atheist, etc.
      But that's not exactly what people want when they ask for representation. Rather they want sufficient amount of material that reflects them in order for them to feel seen. It's very vague what that would look like.
      But at the end of the day, all of it is just a struggle for power. And the majority always wins. For now, we the straight whites, are the majority, so all the others have to beg us to scootch over and allow them to get a bit of sunlight.

Why is it that Henry Cavill is the only person who looks like the character he's portraying? Other people have commented below, but seriously, this is a problem that needs to stop.

Stop flipping white characters black. People are literally begging for John Stewart, and DC keeps saying, "Uh nope...make Hawkman black or something."

  Realistically, it's more like half (Fisher, Cavill, Affleck), I think Gadot is too skinny, Ezra looks nothing like Barry, and Momoa's hair should be more blonde.

I believe it's called affirmative action, but it doesn't matter all that much what race Hawkman is. Besides, up until a few years ago people were complaining about white washing, now we complain about black washing, so only the nuance changed.
LE: I just realised Aldis Hodge's character was an affirmative action of a police chief or politician in the City on a Hill show after some racism scandal took place. He just put a black man in a high position to make up for that.

Agreed but for Hawkman it doesn't really matter much. He's a dude that gets constantly reincarnated. His race is not that relevant although he is a white dude in most cases.

  Her look is so iconic that since she took the role her DCEU costume is now the default comic costume with it being in the comics since 2016, some artists even go as far as drawing her like she looks like Gal.

  In Africa, basically, you have Maghrebic countries above Sahara (arabic type of people), and everything under Sahara (black type of people). Egypt is considered part of the arabic countries.
  But as long as Hawkcouple reincarnates in whatever part of the world, alt-right people are expected to see WB's choice to be part of the agenda.
  In the sequel, far-left people are expected to complain WB's choice to male them white, and so on...

Geez, people know nothing about Hawkman. Carter Hall and Shiera Sanders Hall (the Golden Age characters) are reincarnations of the ancient Egyptian prince Khufu and princess Chay-Ara. They're cursed to die and meet again in every new life, and those new lives can arise on Earth or on other planets, like Thanagar (Katar and Shayera Hol), Krypton and so on. When they reincarnate as humans on Earth, they don't have powers -- instead, they use Nth metal on wings and weapons. Carter and Shiera can reincarnate as white, black, Asian, Latino and whatever you like, because their race is not important at all. Like AT ALL. For example, Kendra Saunders (the latest Hawkgirl) is Hispanic. If you want more information, I recommend to read the Hawkman Vol 5 (first published in 2018).

Honestly, Hawkman (and for the same reason Hawkgirl\woman) is the one character they can probably play around with the casting as much as they want considering the convoluted and sometimes contradictory backstory of that character that even DC editorial can barely keep track of.

(Not that this is going to stop some people from complaining)

SMH. Exactly what I expected scrolling down. Love how historians come out the woodwork when race change occurs in comic book films. This is not that big of a deal considering the origins of the character. They could have hired someone like the guy from Aladdin, Mena Massoud, and been a bit more technically accurate from an Egyptian standpoint but given the character's Egyptian/African roots, it's a fair swap. I know we fans can be sticklers for the details but we can all get behind this switchup. Let's just move on.

It’s just weird and kind of insulting that Hollywood apparently only deals in Caucasian or African American, for the most part, and nothing else. You can earn diversity points from other minorities, too, people, and, in cases like this, it would be more accurate...

Hispanics make up like 20% of the US population and I believe they make up less than 10% of movie roles while blacks are 13% of the population and also around that number for movie roles. I'm not saying I think Hispanics are disadvantaged or excluded, but it's funny how the same people who always see inequality of outcome as oppression couldn't care less about that.
