It would seem that when Joker became the little film that could be by breaking the billion-dollar barrier, DC movies are back in serious play.
A new report from Variety offers some updates on various DC film plans, but it is certainly far from complete. Most notably, it discusses Superman and confirms that Michael B. Jordan did indeed meet with the studio to offer up a pitch. Due to his hectic schedule, it doesn't appear anything is happening at this time. The report also suggests that J.J. Abrams has talked with the studio as well, but nothing has moved forward.
The biggest surprise, however, may be that a Green Lantern movie is apparently still in the works. With the recent announcement of a series coming to HBO Max, many thought the film was dead, but that appears to not be the case. Geoff Johns is expected to turn in a script by the end of the year, so we'll have to wait and see how this moves forward. The plan reportedly calls for J.J. Abrams to be shown the script to see if his Bad Robot production company is interested in it.
As to R-rated films, Warner Bros. is apparently far more open to the concept now. Birds of Prey is expected to hit an R rating, as is James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.
In a not too surprising revelation, all primary actors in The Batman and Birds of Prey have contract options for sequels and spinoff films. This is not uncommon in this day and age of massive film franchises, but it is always nice to see it confirmed.
In other minor updates, it confirmed that Ezra Miller is still in as the Flash, but his film probably won't begin filming until 2021 at the earliest. Plans are still moving forward for The Trench, but a director has yet to be chosen.
Not mentioned in the article was any updates on Shazam! 2, or Black Adam. With the latter finally confirmed, though, that one isn't too surprising.
All-in-all, it sounds as though the future of DC on the big screen is looking up quite a bit, and we can't wait.
