Warner Bros. considering Superman reboot with Michael B. Jordan

Earlier today, it was reported that Warner Bros. and Henry Cavill had parted ways on Superman. A source for The Hollywood Reporter said it would likely be several years before Warner Bros. makes another Superman movie and apparently they already have something in mind.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has been thinking about taking Superman in a completely different direction for some time now. They say that the studio is considering casting Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan as the Man of Steel for their eventual reboot.

    Even better: If a DCEU version of the character exists in the future should the opportunity arises, it should be a merging of both of those characters (Val-Zod of Earth 2 and Kalel of Earth 23) with both their personalities intact; and that's all without invalidating the original Superman/Clark Kent. Same for Nubia and Diana Prince; both characters can definitely coexist and the lore is already in the comics if DC wants to explore more ideas in fleshing out the DCEU.
    No need for a reboot.

        Apart from the weirdly angled square abs, hell yeah. haha
        You don't notice that in the movie unless you pause it and squint, though, so I don't mind at all.
        JL's looked like a Party City Halloween costume by comparison. The muscles look airbrushed on, but with the bright highlights abruptly cutting off into empty blue space. The contrast is so artificial and exaggerated, whereas in MoS and BvS (for the most part), it looks naturally lit and contoured despite being enhanced.

        I disagree the Man of Steel suit is the only one that looked good to me. You could tell the suit just highlighted Cavills physique whereas the Batmann V Superman one just exaggerated his muscle.
        It looked fake. It looked like he was in constant flex 💪🏻 even when he was calm
        Sure, i guess the constant flex look is comics accurate except what’s in the comics doesn’t completely translate to real life that well

        No. I didn't. It was far too dark and grim, maroon and dark navy are not Superman's colors, the belt was stupid and did nothing to break up the blue, and the weird designs on the sides trying and failing to be 'alien'. No, I was never a fan. I've seen far better cosplay.

        I know some people have criticisms that don't revolve around tone and expected tropes, but they were the focal point of a lot of complaints to the point that it was practically a meme.
        Here are a few from the front page of MoS's RT review highlights - mostly what they categorize as top critics.

        I'm sure you've seen the Man of Steel smile collage, so he smiled plenty when appropriate, but a lot of people didn't process that because of things like the 'dour' story tone obscuring it (I saw a message of hope, seeking purpose/direction, and determination, personally), or the color palette (another form of tone) was too cold and greyish-blue too often.
        So if it wasn't smiling directly, it was the tone making it feel like there needed to be more smiling. A lot of superficial complaints that restrict artistic flexibility - and this is coming after an era where people feverishly insisted that, to be relevant, Superman should smile and be perfect less because it was boring to them compared to Batman.
        Man of Steel was always going to be 55%, honestly. Society's demands are all over the place and the popular goalpost keeps moving.

        I don't see what there is to disagree about what is plainly observable. I even posted a peek at the top RT review highlights for you to see.
        The first Top Critic review from RT draws the majority of it's aggressive, dismissive whinging from creatively repackaged tone complaints. Specifically, they think Superman is too Jesusy and it turns them off. They don't like the focus that he has a huge load to bear, the intense amounts of destruction, etc. They want more humor, more charisma, and less stress.
        "This Clark Kent has to bear the weight of everything this heavy,
        humorless, throat-clearing movie is desperate for him to symbolize."
        "The movie is so serious about comparing Clark to the Messiah that it starts to feel like church. "
        "By the time Laurence Fishburne, playing the Daily Planet‘s editor, Perry White, is covered in dust and helping to dig out an employee trapped beneath rubble as skyscrapers collapse around them, the movie has turned the iconography of terror attacks into pornographic exploitation."
        "He’s in most of the scenes and yet isn’t asked to provide any charisma. The most charming thing about him is the window box of chest hair poking out of his costume’s collar. All Cavill’s Superman is required to do is look hot and fly for our sins."
        Can you really see those quotes and deny that this was a thing?
        These are all tone, or, 'not enough smiling' complaints, and it's the dominant, most-repeated feature of just one of many similar reviews on RT here, and every disappointed person I've talked to as a casual movie-goer complained about the tone/smiling too, and little else. It's real, man.

        Yes. Because the complaints about the tone and such are symptoms of the problems of the overall quality of the film. So I say again: there is nothing stopping a good Superman movie that takes liberties from being a success.

        Having read the entire review I sampled those quotes from, I can tell you that those quotes are specifically complaints about tone as the problem, not that they're a symptom of a bigger problem.
        There is not a broader vision idea that the film is poorly made and
        therefore the tone suffered. Quite the opposite, the deliberate
        insinuation is that the tone is largely what caused the film's quality to suffer.

  It's not so much about the color of his skin so much as it's about the plot/story revolving around the issue. They bring in the black Superman, the whole entire movie will be about his race. If they do an origin movie, not only will the public be scared of him because he's an alien, but they'll make a commentary on the color of his skin being black instead of it being of no importance.
  In essence, by trying to be progressive, they actually make a RACIST movie.

    The idea of them making another origin movie is something I don't think we'll see. If and when we do get a new Superman flick, I'm expecting it to start in media res like Spider-Man: Homecoming, regardless of the actor's skin.

      People can tend to take their opinions and feelings way too far, but more often than not, the motive is to simply have their displeasure noticed so that the heads in charge can perhaps realize that a collective are disapproving of their decisions.

        I don't mind preachy as long as it's tactful. There are better, classier ways to promote racial (and gender/sexuality/etc) representation in films than flipping the bird to white males and trying to take something away from them to possess it for themselves. This only promotes tension and segregation.
        It's not like DC doesn't have some awesome legacy characters who are black (or women) that they could be boosting focus on. And it's also not like we can't create new ones and develop them into something special that people would care about.
        We were all happy to go see Wonder Woman. They didn't have to gender-swap Superman or Batman to get a relevant female character big screen attention and success. Same for Black Panther.

        Good point. I agree. Yet very few are able to straddle the line between sending a message and talking down to the audience, which is why it's better to avoid it altogether because nobody can help themselves.
        But again, that's why, as you said, Wonder Woman was good. Because it had someone in charge who not only knew what they were doing, but also knew not to alienate half her audience by talking down to them.

I know there's a Black Superman in the comics, but WB would be INCAPABLE of making a Superman movie with a black actor without making the entire movie ABOUT the color of his skin. They just wouldn't be able to help themselves. And for that, it's a giant NO.
Either get Cavill back right this instant or forget about Superman movies for a while until someone comes in who actually cares about the character instead of trying to appease SJWs.

  He's richer than all of us combined will ever be and is being considered for a myriad of leading man roles. He has no trouble putting food on the table. And nobody reasonable wants everything one color in Hollywood or superhero films in general. So new characters of different races or say John stewart the green lantern who is black, he's absolutely great and would be welcomed. In fact I wish the 2011 Green Lantern film had been about him. But if someone wants to change Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne for the fine art of virtue signaling and meeting diversity quotas then that's just dumb. Cast whomever fits the actual existing character. There is no "right thing" to do. And if you think there is in casting someone different from the existing character, then you have an agenda, not a reasonable casting process.

      id prefer to know that we "could" get something equivalent to The Dark Knight or that we "could" get an R rated movie. The MCU is too formulated for my taste. I prefer WB's method of auteur driven films where the director has full control. At Marvel, everything is under the vision of Kevin Feige. He maps everything out including stories and when and where characters can appear. And it all has to intertwine some way and serve some greater purpose and add some piece to the mosaic that is the MCU. The films are largely made by committee. Thats not to say they are studio movies, but I do not get the sense that they are truly auteur driven projects(like WB is known for). Ya sometimes a director has a cool vision and that will bleed into the film(Taiki Watiti with Thor Ragnarok or James Gunn with GOTG), but they still have to conform to so many rules and often have to tell a pre established story that was mapped out years in advance by someone else as opposed to being able to tell their own original narrative like what they are letting Matt Reeves, Patty Jenkins, and various others do or for that matter what Nolan was able to do for his entire trilogy. Sure its not always like that, but still. DC doesn't need to be MCU 2.0. They need to be their own thing and reinvent the standard. Not copy it

        The only formulaic thing I see in MCU movies is that they are character driven and have generally straightforward stories. Other than that, the movies feel different between each other.
        To me proof is the puddin. In the last 15 years WB has managed to produce 4 well received superhero movies with their director approach. 3 of them being Nolan's. The MCU has produced about 20.
        Fact of the matter is, the MCU is the only franchise that has managed to achive what they've achieved. If there's another way, WB is leaps and bounds away of figuring it out. To make it worse, they're still hiring mediocre filmmakers.
        To me it's a no brainer. I'd rather see good movies with diverse characters 3 times a year than one great trilogy every few decades, if that ever happens again.

        i just can't get behind this whole thing that some people claim the MCU films all feel different. They all kind of generally look and feel the same to me. There are certain elements present in pretty much EVERY MCU movie. Sometimes these elements are stronger or weaker, but its always the same kind of general style I feel. Which makes them feel samey to me. Also, everything has to go under the "family friendly" agenda since its Disney. This I feel severely limits their creative potential. How would Disney even do a batman movie? Daredevil is basically Marvel's batman and they put him on netflix because it doesn't fit the tone and style of the MCU.

        To me a movie like The Winter Soldier felt very different from a Thor movie, Black Panther felt very different from a GOTG movie, Infinity War felt very different from the other 2 Avengers movies.
        Sure, there are a few stylistic similarities between some MCU movies (specially in the lightning, color and VFX), but other than that, I don't see how they are similar.
        Anyway, what's wrong with movies feeling similar? It's not like they're repeating the same stories. I honestly don't see the problem as long as the movies are good.
        As for being family friendly, MCU movies are mostly PG-13, as are DCEU movies. Even TDK was PG-13. I don't think they are limited in the least. Hell, Civil War's final battle was arguably bloodier and more violent than any scene in the DCEU. And honestly, none of the iconic DC characters need an R rated movie.

Wasn't there a book or something where in the future, movies were called "Disneys" because Disney literally owned everything? Doesn't sound like a great future imo. Marvel and DC need to distinguish from each other.

Just because he's black doesn't mean he wouldn't make a good superman. Superman is an ideal just like any other character I'm sure given the right script Michael B. Jordan could portray the values and morals of superman and mind you in the comics/animation Reign of the Supermen Steel was a black man under his suit so maybe they are going in that direction who knows but none the less I think Michael B. Jordan is a good actor and can make us believe he's Superman.

    I’m sorry I just can’t get over a black Superman. I’m not racist, but we all know who Superman is our minds...
    and while many seem to claim that no mater what colour we all were all equal which is true but that doesn’t mean we’re completely interchangeable.
    We may all be equal but we’re not all the same. Black people look, sound, and act very very different to how whites people do.
    It’s not just skin colour, our voices sound different, our noses and lips are different, our hair is different
    This is similar to if they made Superman white as he normally is but gave him a pink mohawk it just wouldn’t feel right !
    Everybody likes having the iconic nature of these characters preserved as they are translated to the big screen or it simply just doesn’t feel like the actual character,
    I’m sorry but a black Superman will just never feel right... there are plenty of other black lesser known superheroes ( such as cyborg) that have proven that unknown black superheroes can be successful.
    When they take away a character that is incredibly iconic and that is always been white... not only does it feel totally wrong because it feels like a fake version of the actual character or a knock off/parody or spin offf but because it also feels like white people are being given a giant middle finger as if the fact that these iconic superheroes were created out of pure racist intent
