J.K. Simmons hopes to play Commissioner Gordon again

on J.K. Simmons hopes to play Commissioner Gordon again

J.K. Simmons wishes he knew more about his turn as Commissioner Gordon, but it seems he is as in the dark about as fans are.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Simmons was asked about his role as Gotham's most famous police officer. "I wish I could have something to offer, but actually if I did know more I don’t think… they’d probably shoot me if I told you."

Simmons went on to add, "I know nothing, I know that I signed up to do three movies and I hope there are going to be two more. It has been in and around and through, whether it be Batman or Justice League or another Suicide Squad, or where Commissioner Gordon might end up appearing again, I’m open to it." He concluded by saying, "I’m not sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring in the meantime, but I hope there’s more of that in the future."

With Matt Reeves' The Batman seemingly going back to an early time in the caped crusader's career, it seems unlikely that he would appear there in the role. However, mentioning 'another Suicide Squad,' he could definitely appear in the upcoming James Gunn film without issue. Although it appears the Squad will be venturing out of the U.S., that isn't to say one of the team members couldn't be locked up in the GCPD and retrieved from there or the like.

Of course, that is merely speculation.

Having an Oscar-winning actor on the dotter line for two more films seems like a shame to not bring him back in some way. But we'll just have to wait and see if we ever get to see him protecting the streets of Gotham again.

The Batman is filming this year. If he's telling the truth and really doesn't know anything, that's not a good sign that he'll be in it.

Considering it usually takes a lot of planning to get a space in big stars schedules, what do you think is more likely

      - Smaller star, lesser notice
      - Bigger star, who’s actually been cast for a while

I truly don’t think they’ve started casting yet, but they will be very soon and should have an announcement ready by summer.

I think they’ll go with a smaller star. I’m not expecting a big name like Ben Affleck.

Just ignore JL and bring him back. It will be fucked up if you waste him.

Don’t even have to “ignore” JL. Like, it already would be unnatural to try to shoehorn a reference to it in the solo Batman movie

In other news, Gunn is back as director for Guardians 3.

Was it ever confirmed that he was going to direct the new Suicide Squad film? Things might be changing now.

All of the reports state that he will direct The Suicide Squad first, then move on to Guardians 3.

JK is a fantastic actor, but I don't really see him as Gordon. It's a role that requires a bit more of a physical portrayal, like Gary Oldman did. Maybe JK is a good fit for an older Gordon, sure, but a younger Batman requires a younger Gordon. I wouldn't mind seeing someone else in the role.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure a guy who looks like that can play an old Gordon who can still knock the teeth out of criminals just as well as he can play a young one (via de-aging makeup/CG).

Yeah i hope he will come back as he was great in his small scenes in JL, Oldman will always be my favourite though.

    No thanks,

Big fan of Simmons (anyone watch Counterpart?), but not the way he played Gordon; too much like an old fogey.

Besides, personally, I want to reduce connections to Snyder's films as much as possible. I think that's a smart business decision also.

He had like 2,58 seconds of screentime. Not nearly enough to have an informed opinion on his ability to play this role.
He's incredibly talented and looks the part. You need to give him a proper chance.

      1. BetterNinjaGamer13 Avatar
        BetterNinjaGamer13

        Oh, nonsense.

He had enough screen-time that his demeanor and personality to show his take on the character were evident, as was the costume.

I agree he is talented, but that is only part of the problem. The other part is distancing the new movie from the Snyder movies. Ideally, I would have an entirely new cast. It's not like there is a shortage of talented middle aged men who can't play Gordon convincingly while bringing a different take.

Yeah well, Gadot sucked acting wise in BvS, but she did pretty good in WW. That's because she worked with a great director. Simmons really hasn't had his chance and you know it.

            BetterNinjaGamer13replying to Seb

He would have to give a radically different take then what we got for me to be Ok with it, regardless of director.

... so just like Gadot from BvS to WW.
Snyder is not a good actor director. Simmons will do just fine if he's given a proper chance.

            BetterNinjaGamer13replying to Seb

Nah. Gadot was the same take, just showing different emotions. I'm saying I wan't a completely different take.

You don't need to keep defending Simmons. I don't disagree about his talent, but you are talking past me.

          4. Seb Avatar
            Sebreplying to BetterNinjaGamer13

Gadot in BvS was a lifeless, dull woman. In WW, she was a naive, but strong and optimistic woman with a heart of gold. It was a massive difference, also in terms of her performance. Seems to me you just want to get rid of Snyder's vision, as much as possible. I don't like Snyder's films, but that doesn't mean Simmons can't be a great Gordon in Reeves' film, so no... I'm not talking past you at all.

            BetterNinjaGamer13replying to Seb

            LOL.

Bro, Gadot's performance was not as different as you want to believe, and it was clearly the same take on the character at different points in her life. Learning about men and optimistic vs having retreated from the world of men.

As I've said numerous times now, oh person who clearly argues for the sake of arguing and to hear his own voice, I want a different take on the character. It has nothing to do with Simmon's skill as an actor. Having a completely different take on the same actor would be kind of foolish and needlessly confusing.

I don't mean different take as in same character showing different emotions, but a different take on the character in the same way Batfleck is a different take on the character from Baleman. Not to the same extent, though.

            Sheesh.

There's absolutely NO REASON to just DUMP everyone who played in prior DCEU movies. Especially people who WANT to come back and people of the caliber of an oscar-winner like JK Simmons. He should continue playing an aged Commissioner Gordon (or de-age him via CG/makeup in prequels).

"Sigh". This is the problem. He is great for the role and already signed on but I'm just not a fan of all these "partial" reboots. Would much prefer they just start completely fresh and not have this new batman be tied to another version I the character. I really don't like the idea of the actor just playing a younger version of Ben Affleck(if it is a younger batman). I would just rather it to be 100 percent Matt's own vision.
