Report: Harley Quinn not expected to return in ‘The Suicide Squad’; no plans for a ‘Birds of Prey’ and ‘Gotham City Sirens’ crossover

UPDATE: Forbes how updated their report, saying that Harley Quinn will appear in The Suicide Squad after all. The original story continues below.

A new report from Forbes is out this morning, clearing up some DC Films rumors. It also answers questions fans have had regarding projects like James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

According to Forbes, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is not expected to return in Gunn’s film. Harley was the breakout start of 2016’s Suicide Squad so there has been some thought that perhaps she would stick around despite Gunn using a mostly new cast. Apparently, that will not be the case and Harley is out.

Harley will appear in Birds of Prey, of course, but certain rumors regarding the future of that franchise are said to be false. There are no current plans for a Gotham City Sirens project to cross over with BoP. Batgirl also does not have any ties to BoP at this time.

The Harley and Joker movie, as well as the potential solo movie for Jared Leto’s Joker, have also been scrapped. That’s no surprise considering we have not heard an update on either project in such a long time, but they are indeed dead.

Effectively, there is nothing set in stone regarding Harley Quinn’s DC Films future beyond her Fantabulous Emancipation in Birds of Prey. She is a wildly popular character, however, so there’s no cause for alarm. That Gotham City Sirens is not presently part of the plan does not preclude Warner Bros. from making the film eventually.

The studio has been pretty clear about its intention to focus on individual films/franchises over crossovers. It’s not a major surprise that the studio might want to see how Birds of Prey, which recently started production, takes shape before committing to the next step involving its main characters.

Harley Quinn has a future in DC Films and it’s okay if we don’t know exactly what it is yet.

To me the character Harley Quinn will always just be Joker’s female sidekick rather than all of this additional stuff. Kind of like how Alfred will always just be a Wayne butler to me rather than this military hardass gimmick that is becoming more common in recent years.
I miss Batman movies that come out every couple of years that introduces a new set of villains rather than these Batman movies with very little to no Batman involvement.

Alfred has had a military past for many decades (in fact i'm sure he had it soon after his first appearance if i'm not mistaken) and Harley has had solo stuff since BTAS, in fact she had multiple episodes what had breaking away from Mr J, she was always more then Joker's "female sidekick".

I know you have more than enough personal time to dive into this fascinating world of fiction than I do. Your response doesn’t take anything away from my comment which is presented as an opinionated commentary but apparently that bothers you.
    I stand by everything that I typed. The typical fanboy response of “teh comics” is tiresome considering that these characters aren’t merely defined by their comic book counterparts and the majority of Batman fanbase likely are not active comic book readers. These characters have so many different platforms and can be perceived in different ways.
    People can prefer these characters however they wish and it doesn’t make them wrong. It only makes you wrong for not accepting this and for harassing people about it lol.

      You see the problem is you word your opinions as fact and i'm correcting you. Just because you like things one way doesn't mean that's how it is, end of the day Alfred having that type of past has been thing far longer then you have been alive, Harley being away from Joker and being more then Joker's sidekick has been a thing since her first incarnation in BTAS. Nothing wrong in preferring something else but don't act like that stuff is some modern "gimmick" when its clearly not. You know this is like saying that Batman having a Robin is a modern gimmick.
      By the way if you don't want people to reply to you then don't comment, if you comment then expect people to reply as that's how it goes. He's been making comments recently what are acting like Alfred's background and now Harley's background is modern stuff even though its stuff been there from the start or soon after the start, its fine if he doesn't like that stuff but don't say it is something when its not.

        Actually, adding "to me" does make it right. Anyone can hold any version of a character in their imagination, and if they are being honest, then what they say is true and accurate. It doesn't mean that their opinion is right for the character at a broader level or for others to see it. But you can't really fault someone for describing how they think about specific characters. It seems silly to get worked up over how other people imagine things.

If i said "to me the Sun is purple and the sky is bright green and everyone has wings on their backs" that doesn't make what i said right as that is clearly wrong. He can only prefer, factual though saying all this stuff is a more modern thing is wrong as this stuff has always been there, as i said Alfred's background is older then him and Harley having solo stuff has been there from the start so while he's free to prefer it when that stuff isn't the focus it doesn't mean that stuff only came about now and never originally existed.

        Except that you really could say that "to me the sun is purple". If you imagine the sun is purple, that is a true statement. He isn't saying, "The sun is purple". He is saying "to me, the sun is purple." For all I know that could be the title of a poem or a song. People make artistic interpretations of the world all the time. And in this case, it isn't even to describe an objective event, it is an artistic interpretation of a work of art, making the subjective interpretation even more reasonable. I don't love Picasso's art, I think its bonkers. But other people are willing to pay millions of dollars for it. "To them" it represents something different than what it represents to me. Your interpretation of the characters are every bit as valid as his, but it goes both ways.

        If you said that you'd be color blind. He talked about his perception of the characters and what they are to him. That's subjective. You talking about the suit, on the other hand, isn't subjective. He said to him, those are side, irrelevant characters, he never denied what they really are. I think that's a fair point. For example: Damian TO ME will be nothing but an experiment turned canon which ruined a lot of things but in reality he is what he is and I can't change that.

        I’ll admit, before reading Hunter’s comment, it also bothered me when he said Alfred is nothing but a butler. Even if that’s his opinion, Alfred has always had little tidbits in stories showing his past. Even if Rick prefers butler Alfred, he did make it sound as if Alfred hasn’t ever been more than that. It sounded like he was implying it’s a money grab, to me. (That extra “to me” is probably a bad attempt at a joke).
        I’ll admit I like Jeremy Irons’ Alfred to Caine’s or Gough’s. All are quirky. Gough and Irons are definitely better butlers than Caine, but almost all are companions and share the same passion. I’ve always held the feeling deep down that Bruce became Batman because of how awesome Alfred is (that the ideas behind Batman and fighting for what is right is almost just as important to Alfred as it is to Bruce). I’ll also admit I’m not sure if it goes back as far as Hunter says, but it definitely isn’t knew. Alfred has ALWAYS been a badass.

        I love when the badassness comes out though. One of the most memorable Alfred moments for me is when he’s dressed as Batman to throw the scent off Bruce... I’m thinking it was The Batman. I also absolutely love Jeremy Irons being in the batcave 100% of the time and tinkering with gadgets. I’ll be upset if him and Ben never get to do their own movie. I was hoping we’d see Ben as Bruce in a Batman Beyond movie. I’ll admit with what we saw on film in the 80s and 90s and obviously BTAS, Al did seem like a doting butler, and this new badass type in BvS, Gotham, and the new Alfred-centered show may seem new even if it’s just showing what’s always been at the core of what makes him perfect in this role. He cares for the Wayne family, has raised Bruce as a father practically, and helps the world’s greatest detective every step of the way from the basement. I can see where Hunter saw Rick’s “opinion” as misinformed fact stating I guess. I’ve never had Hunter come after me, so IDK how Rick feels, but I think R should feel good about stirring up discussion that H finds intriguing enough to comment and talk about though. Eh.

        I’ll agree with Hunter in the fact that, to me, you made a claim about all these shows and movies are painting them in a new light, when if anything, they’re getting into the roots of the characters.
        I think you meant you don’t care about these new projects. That the characters don’t matter to you. That you aren’t going to watch them. What is confusing is your comment paints a picture that seems like you hate the new and wish for the old days where Harley and Al didn’t matter. That wasn’t ever the case. You just didn’t pay attention then and technically you don’t have to pay attention now.
        Going back to your initial comment, I was hoping we were getting away from the one and done bad guys. I really think if Ledger didn’t die, we’d’ve seen Joker and Bruce meet up several times. I hate Leto’s Joker, but really thought we’d see him pop in and out of movies before finally having his very own. Just when you think they’re giving you what you want, they fuck up!
        All of that being said, you cannnn block commenters. I’ve blocked one and every so often see I have a hidden comment. You can see it before logging in on the page to comment if you’re reallu curious. I’m just glad he doesn’t show up in any more threads for me.       Alfred had a past in British intelligence in the comics for a long time (which I would not class as the military). His more military background aspects only really came to prominence in recent years, with Batman Earth One and then Gotham taking from that.

Very surprised Harley won't be in TSS as she was the best thing about SS, not surprised at all that all the Joker stuff has been scrapped and i assume that means Leto is gone now. I think honestly to complete the "Harley Trilogy" they should do a Harley & Ivy film as her final film.

    I argue that both Harley and Joker were one of the worst things about the movie when they should have been the best. The purple car sequence always sticks out to me as the most cringe worthy moments in DC history. Then i remembered that Harley was born from an animated series and was simply a humorous sidekick.
    She doesnt work as a character.
    Not sure why fandom insists this is not the case. Its pretty clear. Irregardless of its BO money.
    Im pretty sure BoP is the result of a contract Robbie signed in order to create her own project. She is executive producer and responsible for the writer and director. Im also more than sure she is making some (questionable) choices. If we get same Harley in BoP as we did SS then that character in that film makes absolutely zero sense besides appeasing its fanboys. If Robbie decided on changing the personality of Harley then not only is that a cop out but it proves everyone else right.

      Yeah not really, have you even watched the show properly? The show explored her a lot and gave her a tragic story and a lot of depth. If Harley was just a funny sidekick then she wouldn't have jumped from the show to the comics in such a big way.
      End of the day SS was a big success for WB/DC and Harley was the key reason why. If Harley didn't work then WB wouldn't have been trying to get her in all these films and letting Robbie make the film she wanted, if Harley was hated they would have dropped her like Leto and his Joker.

        And yes, ive watched every episode of the BAS and yes Arleen Sorkin played her as comic relief. Maybe SS played to a young instragram, meme loving, immature audience with its highly successful music soundtrack and lets not forget the title. Lots of those young people liked her.while many did not. After all, right now if you are an empowered female comic book character you can get whatever you want. That doesnt mean that they should.
        The success of SS should be studied for generations. I hope BoP will be the last we see of Harley.

        Of course she was funny but saying she was just that is like saying Batman is only a great fighter and nothing else. Harley had a lot of depth in the show and was played more of a tragic character, the undertones with her were pretty mature and sad what fuel so much of her character from then to even now. Sorkin was funny when needed but she put a lot of sadness into her voice a lot of the time.

  I find it funny how James Gunn was hired as a writer and not only ended up taking director slot but also ended up firing entire SS 1 cast which included the likes of Will Smith and Margot Robbie.
  I think WB realizes his potential and wants him to stay as their director even beyond Suicide Squad.That's why they gave him whatever he asked.Good move wb.

    People can hate on Guardians 1 and 2 all they want but Gunn took something what were Z-Isters and made them A-listers along with both making a ton of money. Gunn was giving a lot of control over those films and it shows so WB had to give him that kinda control for SS as well.

      To me Vol 1 ranks as one of the best CBM of all time. I freakin' love that movie. Vol 2 was quite dissapointing though.

I think part of the original SS film appeal was to have 1. Harley Quinn as a character; 2. The Joker as a character; and 3. Will Smith as an actor (a lot of people may not like him, and others like me think he's just "meh, whatever", but he does bring money to the boxoffice). With the Joker experiment turning out so bad, and the other two characters apparently out (one of them confirmed), I think they will have to bring at least one heavy hitter (an actor who just by himself can draw the GA's attention), because the rest of the characters in the SS, for me at least, are not that interesting...

I think WB is just focused on rebranding Birds of Prey with Harley Quinn as the leader, and that being their one female team. Ivy would have to wait on a potential sequel. And hopefully Matt Reeves is the one to cast Selina.
It's hard to envision either Jared Leto or Jesse Eisenberg getting another shot at reprising their roles as Joker and Lex. That's the risk of straying too far from the source material. If it doesn't connect with the general audience, then it's usually one strike and you're OUT!

Not surprised about any of this. I wasn’t expecting GCS, as it seemed to be jumping ahead of things a bit since BoP wasn’t even out yet. And I wasn’t expecting HQ in TSS, since she escaped the end of the last SS movie.

James Gunn and Matt Reeves could potentially be setting up a new DCEU or whatever you wanna call it? Better to move on from the past with new actors, a wise decision on Gunn’s part. Also, I could see Margot out as Harley if BoP turns out to be flaming garage.

  I doubt they’re making new. I could see Reeves’ being apart of the Dark DC like The Joker. I honestly think Gunn meant he’d have a new iteration of the team, like the comics have several combos. I think Amanda Waller is the main constant. Maybe Boomerang. I think they’re just getting more people to do a mission. It makes a lot of sense why these bad guys KEEEEEP GETTING OUT! Harley is here to stay. They wouldn’t have green lit this movie if they were done with it. They’re in talks of Aquaman. I think I may have heard WW discussions already. DCEU isn’t being rebooted. We’re just in the lull of movies and news. They’re not going to discuss and have press conferences about things they don’t have scripts for. There isn’t any point. I’m betting right now Ben eventually directs his own Batman movie in the current timeline. Speculation isn’t news; nothing has been confirmed or denied other than Reeves is looking for a younger actor for his Batman.

Even if they correct course, I'll never be able to forget the shitfest the past 6 years have been. I've been disappointed over and over and it'll take them a long time and great movies to gain us back.
I'm so so so glad WB got what they deserved though. They tried to hurry things and catch up to Marvel and it just delayed them more and cost them money, stress and god knows what else

  To be honest I have never agreed with the idea that DC rushed into anything. Marvel had to work with solo movies because their characters were not as well known. But DC has people who are very well known and the plan could have worked.
  BUT... If you are going with a plan based on characters being familiar then you have to go with the common conceptions of the characters. If they had just given us that they would have been printing money.

This means absolutely nothing right now. If the BOP films is successful financially then the GCS, which is a more natural environment for Haley Quinn, will be a high priority. It will also launch a BOP sequel with Batgirl.
