Christopher McQuarrie Reportedly Passed on DC Projects Before Agreeing to Direct Two More Mission: Impossible Movies

Director Christopher McQuarrie has been a regular part of the DC Films rumor mill. He's on just about every fan's wish list for potential DC directors. Warner Bros. will have to wait before getting an opportunity to work with McQuarrie, but it's not from a lack of trying.

McQuarrie has signed on to direct two more Mission: Impossible films. He previously directed the Rogue Nation and Fallout installments of the franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. tried to lure McQuarrie away from M:I with potential DC projects, but he passed.

It is not known which projects Warner Bros. discussed with McQuarrie. The director has spoken publicly about conversations he had with Henry Cavill on the set of Mission: Impossible - Fallout about making a Superman movie together. McQuarrie was also a rumored favorite for Green Lantern Corps.

The good news for anyone hoping for a McQuarrie and DC pairing is that it could still happen. There is no movement on a Superman project just yet. Green Lantern Corps has been in development for years, but it has never come close to going into production.

Both of those projects could still be available for McQuarrie when his schedule clears up. If not, then Warner Bros. can offer him another DC film. McQuarrie is going to shoot the next two M:I movies back-t0-back for respective release dates in 2021 and 2022.

It won't be very long at all, relatively speaking, before McQuarrie is available for his next major franchise. Warner Bros. can (and probably will) try again to bring him into the DC family.

I think the time line suits him better after these next two MI movies. We will hopefully see a little more direction on where WB/DC is headed with their films.

  Selfishly, I want those two MI movies as a consumer as well. As much as I want to hate Tom Cruise, the guy makes amazing MI movies. Every one is incredible!
  Though a Chris McQ Superman would be all kinds of epic, so I want that too...
  Fun story about Chris McQ - He used to live in my neighborhood in Seattle growing up & I worked at the local ice cream spot. He would come in with his family at the time & I remember hearing he co-wrote (or did a draft) of The Usual Suspects. We slowly talked to each other more over time & he cued me in on a Superman movie he was helping clean up the script for. I stood there in awe of the fact that another Superman movie was happening & the last thing he said to me (ever?) was "let's just say you'll believe a man can fly."
  The guy was destined to take this on!

Green Lantern Corps is nowhere to be heard... Batman Movie PROBABLY filming in November... no Superman news. Wonder Woman coming out till 2020. No Flash news. Just news about the Harley Quinn movie, Shazam and probably in my opinion my most anticipated movie since BvS and WW... The Joker. I really want to tell y’all that we will probably get a Blue Beetle movie or Booster gold movie before we get a Superman Or Lantern movie... not so please on how this DC universe is going but hey... can’t argue with y’all cause you guys are about to tell me Aquaman made a Billion. I’m in the minority though

  Aquaman's success shouldn't make people overlook all the uncertainty that's surrounding DC movies. I still see no plan. WB still seems to be reactionary and they don't seem to be interested in developing a cinematic universe properly.

    Couldn’t agree more. The fact that there’s no direction for a Superman movie is beyond me... or better yet no word on Flash, or GL, or even Martian manhunter. These are characters that should be in the mix already. Yet here we are still wondering when the hell the next Batman movie will even start production

Some people will look at Aquamans success and be like “nothing to worry about guys, this movie made a billion DC is in the right direction” I’m iffy on Shazam and the Harley Quinn movie it’s like WB see’s success in a movie and be like “HEY THAT MOVIE MADE MONEY! MAKE A SEQUEL TO IT QUICK. FORGET ABOUT THE OTHER MOVIES” or “WHAT EVERYBODY ENJOYED HARLEY QUINN ?! QUICK GIVE HER A MOVIE “ ... hopefully Walter Hamada has some sanity and doesn’t do this.

    well ya you don't see a plan. because they haven't told us a plan. I don't think they will tbh. I think they are done with slates. They will announce movies as they come and will go into production when they are ready I think. I don't think they need another 10 year plan right now though. Just make good movies for the time being

      They were probably doing slate financing before. Which is where investors finance a whole slate of movies. For now, it's easier to finance smaller individual movies and sure things like Wonder Woman instead of the "DCEU" as a whole.
      It's not a coincidence the DCFU's Aguaman was tailor-made for and heavily marketed toward China. It probably had large Chinese investment.

    Things will change as DC gets more successful.But, If next movies fail then i doubt it.You still have to give credit to Warner bros. for investing in three completely new movies Aquaman, Joker, Shazam despite jl flop and disappointing BvS.But again, Shazam and Joker suppose to have low budget and Aquaman also had less budget than BvS and Jl.That shows wb is hesitant and are still playing safe.They don't want to give up a potential goldmine which is dc but they also don't want to throw millions away.So, Shazam and Joker better succeed.

    Oh man. If your talking about a JL movie in 2027... Gal Gadot will be In her 40’s and I doubt she will play WW. Jason Momoa will be in his middle 40’s probably not even.... all I’m saying if we’re getting a JL till that year ... the DC Universe will be in a completely different state than what it is today. Hopefully we get one more movie together with Cavill, Affleck, Gadot, Momoa, Miller and Fisher and maybe throw in Zachary Levi in there too but it’s like a 20 percent chance that will happen.

        If I was in charge of the company I wouldn’t jump ship and wouldn’t immediately plan ideas for a sequel for aquaman. I would focus on the other characters as well. Wonder Woman will probably be a success, I trust patty Jenkins on what she’s doing. But I just disagree with the Harley Quinn movie. Like if the movie bombs or is a success, where do we go from there ? Harley Quinn part 2 ? Shazam will probably make 700 million and will probably be the next Superman ? I’m not sure but they have a lot to figure out at WB... but I would see a JL before 2023 and for sure be the last time we see Gal as WW and Maybe just maybe Cavill and Affleck last time donning the Batman and Superman suit the ones that i see being here for awhile is Ezra as flash Momoa as Aquaman and hopefully Ray Fisher as Cyborg

      You know with those ages they could try to lure them back for Kingdom Come, never happen i know but its a story where being older works. That aside i expect Gadot will leave after WW3 (its going to happen no doubt) and Momoa to leave after AM3, they may make cameos in other films during the time between sequels but unless WB say fuck it and announce JL2 for 2022 or something i doubt we will have have them back for a JL type film sadly.

  The fact that there isn't a MoS2 plan firmly in place with an amazing script & director lined up is mind boggling. If you gave me 6 months to put together a "dream scenario" for writer, director, actors/characters included, it would probably be better than whatever plans they current "have" for Superman.
  I feel like it's more work to fail this bad with these amazing tentpole characters, but WB continues to impress in their cluelessness here. "The Batman" sounds like its in great hands, but an epic Green Lantern, well-written, well-directed Superman sequel & strong Flash follow-up aren't even in pre-production?!?
  Aquaman proves how to do it - great lead, great characters, AMAZING universe to play with & strong director. DONE. Get it moving WB - please, for the culture.

    The truth is, they're a business. They see a Supergirl movie making more money than a MoS sequel. Even a Chinese or Black Superman would most likely make more money, than making a traditional Superman movie with Clark Kent.

      Superman is one of the most recognizable symbols in the world (I think it's him, Mickey Mouse & Batman in the top 3).
      I am a firm believer that if a good movie is made with great characters, it will succeed...See: Aquaman, which had/has legs.
      I think it's a little simple to say that if his race was anything other than how he's depicted in the comics it would be a success.
      Honestly, I think Supergirl has more of a chance to bomb than a well done Superman movie. They could even cue her up in the MoS2 sequel, which I think would help both out.

        I'd like a Superman movie with Clark too, but the general audience wants to see something new and different. I also disagree with your opinion about Supergirl preforming worse. With the success of Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn, proves the general audience wants to see more female main characters.
        Besides, there will always be a Superman movie. Right now while super hero movies are popular, it's best to give the spotlight to other heroes that never got the chance.

      Plus Clark Kent had open casket funeral with Daily Planet staff members in attendance. Doesn’t really make sense for Clark to continue besides in secret with his mom and Lois and JL members.
      An off world adventure teaming with GL Corps or New Gods, ect could work however. Him fighting Black Adam is also possibility based on meetings with The Rock. He doesn’t have to carry a film by himself to be relevant in DCEU moving forward.

    its not that hard to understand I think. Its either an issue with Cavill, an issue with the character, or both I would say. I am sure it is not unreasonable to assume that WB views the character as problematic. Unfortunate, but understandable. THey haven't been able to make Superman work in live action for decades.

Somebody explain to me how Black Panther is nominated for best picture and MIFallout is not? Both action thrillers with one far superior in every way. Yet one will be on shortlist while the other nobody talks about. While we're at it Tom Cruise's performance on his film was superior to anyones on BP. Tired of him getting zero respect.

Panther is on the list of films what could make the final list and its pretty much certain at this point, the stupid backlash what will happen if it doesn't means they have no choice but to put it through.       The only comic book film what deserves a "big" Oscar is Spider-Man into The Multiverse for Best Animation Film. The fact Black Panther is being considered for best film is a joke especially when yeah Fallout is a better film in every way. End of the day the Oscars are meant to be awards for what was made best, told best, acted best etc and not something for people to feel special because their film had a 99% Black cast and done well at the box office.
      Remember when people kicked off that time because the Oscars barely had any Black people nominations. All i could think off at the time was well maybe if these Black directors and actors made something worthwhile they might have got a nomination, come on a few years back 12 Years a Slave won a well deserved Oscar (heavy film but i loved it and i'm a fan of the director) so its not like the Oscars ignore Black people and their work.

        My thought is, if that farce of an Oscar category for most popular (hand created by d_ney) was still a thing then Spiderverse should have stolen it from BP.
        Spiderverse is the best comic book movie in last few years.
        Basically what I'm saying is BP does not deserve anything close resembling an award. Even it's CGI was subpar.

        Statistically speaking, around 12.5% of all Oscar nominations of the last decade and a half or so were black. Black people are 13% of the US population, so there really isn't a problem whatsoever and the entire "OscarSoWhite" thing was just a massive hoax triggered by Will Smith's ego, cause he couldn't accept the fact that he wasn't nominated.
        Besides, even if it was 0%, I still wouldn't see a problem. Just like I wouldn't see a problem if it was 100%. All that matters is that the best people get credit.

        Yeah end of the day these awards should be for what was done best, if a black trangender or whatever actor won best actor/actress (wait until they complain there isn't a 3rd option) then yeah good but only if they gave a performance whats worthy of that award. As i said 12 Years A Slave won best picture and i'm fine with that, it wasn't my favorite film that year but its a film worthy of that award. Black Panther though while a good film is just a popcon MCU film like all the others, the villain had depth yes but so did Thanos and his story was told and played much better, the only reason BP is getting this "love" is because its a big film what made a ton of money what has a 99% black cast. As the original comment pointed out MI Fallout is the better film and i would say from a purely film making standpoint and acting its objectively the better film yet its getting no love from the Oscars despite the fact the film will age better and be remembered far longer then Panther ever will.

    Black Panther is my least favorite MCU film. Taking the movie as a whole, it's actually not very good all things considered. T'Challa is a pretty vanilla and flat protagonist and the plot itself is quite stupid.
    Just because it is representing black people does not make it some great film.

      There's actually nothing about it that's good. T'Challa is simply a terrible protagonist with ZERO depth, the story was hilariously predictable (even by Marvel's standards), Idk what the deal is with the praise for Killmonger but I couldn't freaking stand him. A completely unrelatable, exaggerated and overacted mess of a villain. And the CGI was atrocious.
      The movie is not "horrible", but at best it is simply serviceable. Would probably have gotten a 60% rating if it came out exactly the same way in the 90s or early 2000s.

  We all know why. People in the film industry and critics are terrified of attacking a movie that represents black people. I liked BP, but that 97% on RT is so obviously biased, it's hilarious.
  MI Fallout is one of the best action movies I've seen in years. Far better than any CBM this year.

Ok so he's passed on doing a DC movie, for now. Maybe he will enter the fold further down the road, who knows?
Hopefully we get some news soon though about some unannounced DC movies, that are to enter production in the near future, 2020 and beyond.

Considering how fucking great both Rogue Nation and Fallout are i'm happy he's staying with the MI series as him and Cruise = Pure fucking Gold. Watched Fallout again not long back and yeah its easily the best movie of 2018 and one of the best modern action films.

Keys to success: Hiring writers to start on scripts, and then going after directors that really want to take on a comic book movie. Not every director wants to build a project from the ground up, which is why you need good producers, to get the ball rolling. Give a potential director some kind of idea, on how to translate the character in an interesting way. As great as the second trilogy of MI was, I think they should give it a rest. Fallout felt like a finale, there's no real need to make more of these MI films. I'd rather he direct a Superman solo film, but I know that's just wishful thinking.

  I have a feeling these next two will be the last, Cruise as great as he is and while clearly still in peak condition is nearing 60 now so i can't see him doing more after these ones. Tell you what though he may have his views and unlikable quirks but as an actor he's one of my favorites, for me he's up there with Jackie Chan when it comes to committing to his work and the stunts, i'm still shocked that he can still do all this crazy shit with the age he is and do it better then people half his age.

Chris and Tom have a great working relationship, even down to spinning story ideas - he (Chris) would likely not have anywhere near that amount of independence on a DC film. Yes, M:I is a tentpole for Paramount, but Cruise basically owns the property. So just think of Fallout as an amazing "Superman" movie where there's no Clark Kent and Supes can only fly in one direction - straight down, 29,000 feet.

Off topic but what's the deal with Shazam? It's releasing in less than 3 months and we still haven't received the 2nd trailer to get the marketing going. Captain Marvel is releasing a month before and End Game a month after so that barely gives the movie enough time to breath so I find it kinda strange that they are so quiet.

      Shazam and Joker together cost less than Captain Marvel. Zero pressure on DC this year, they will make a huge profit. But Disney spent a ton on Captain Marvel, can it beat Aquaman?
      As for Hellboy beating Shazam, it sounds like a dumb "survey". You have to be pretty stupid to believe that would happen.

    You certainly do if you are surrounded by big juggernauts. Shazam is in no position to be slacking especially after undergoing an extra 2 months of photography. I'm sure it will have close to the same budget as Wondy.

It makes sense for a director to continue in a series if the previous movie was successful. And that is why Warner's #1 priority has to be to secure James Wan for Aquaman 2.

It was a good move on his part. His vision of the MI franchise is probably the best one yet and that’s saying a lot because those movies are pretty good. Making two more of them will no doubt be extremely successful for him.

Wow, two more eh? Surprised Tom has two more in him but not surprised that he'd seek to do them back to back at his age now for release in 2021 and 2022. Cruise has had a great vision with these films and McQ has delivered the best M:I's in my opinion as a director, so there's no wonder he has been chosen to close out the ride with Tom. But yes, safe to say it's not over for him and DC.
Both Supes and Green Lantern feel like they should be happening much sooner and are too far away to be dealt with in 2021 or 2022 but the DC schedule is still too unpredictable as they find their rhythm. But the caliber director that McQ is, he gives me the feels like he has all the potential in the world to properly unite the Justice League on the big screen. And maybe he will... but we definitely still have to work to do while he finishes up his Missions. Hopefully by that time, we'll be in great shape to take it to that level.

      I love both movies but I like McQuarren's style better w his hand to hand fight scenes (Jack Reacher probably his best). The Dubai scene in Ghost Protocal was amazing and Paula Patton was an awesome character that needs to be revisited in future films.

  MI4 is still my favorite. Sure, the story was generic af, but it had a sense of fun and self-awareness that the others lacked. And the burj khalifa scene is still the best (or at the very least, the most nerve-racking) stunt in the franchise.

    Lolll i had to put BvS. Ghost protocol was great and i loved it, but to me rogue nation takes the number 1 spot, the action, the stunts and everything else were perfect, and MI3 was the movie that took the franchise to a whollle other level, which i think had the best villain and really showed tom cruise acting abilities. Ghost protocol is still a great film though.

      I really like MI3, but it missed the spectacle of the newer ones imo.
      Rogue Nation was great but I honestly felt like it was the weakest out of the 3 new ones.

If Marvel had asked him to direct a movie, He might have accepted it.DC have a bad reputation cause of Hack Snyder, It will improve in future.
