on Writer: 'Suicide Squad 2' script is done, will be a direct sequel "deepening" the characters

Discussing Film caught up with Todd Stashwick, who is co-writing Suicide Squad 2 along with director Gavin O’Connor and David Bar Katz. Stashwick had some exciting updates about the movie, like the fact that they've finished their draft of the script.

"We have finished our draft and I’m really proud of it," Stashwick said. "It’s a sequel to the first film. Again, I can’t say anything else. Our intention is to tell an exciting story, deepening these characters."

Suicide Squad 2 was going to start shooting towards the end of the year, but was pushed back in favor of Margot Robbie's Birds of Prey.

Are you excited about a sequel to Suicide Squad? What do you hope to see? Let me know in the comments below.

I won't be surprised if within the next few months we hear it's gonna get another "Page one rewrite."

It seems odd that WB would be so willing to shed off Affleck, Cavill and a lot of the DCEU, yet allow a continuity-direct sequel to Suicide Squad which, despite churning out a good profit, was despised by critics and trampled by audiences.

Critics hated Suicide Squad, but audiences loved it! It was a huge hit among the mainstream. Just look at the box office, the album went gold, the music videos have over 2 billion views, and everyone was Harley Quinn for Halloween that year!

You can butcher a movie with Suicide Squad members because they're not established characters yet and a movie with funny villains is cool, but you shouldn't butcher a movie with Justice League members.

i dont personally think SS 2 is going to share much in common with the first in terms of the whole pop culture aesthetic and stuff. Gavin o Connor is a very different kind of director than David Ayer. Doesnt really seem like his style.

I think when they saw Zack take Superman so seriously and no one cared (and even complained about how serious it was), but they pushed out Hot Topic Squad despite our complaints and it made buckets, everything became clear to them market-wise. ;p

We can see it in many of their choices lately. Michael B. Jordan has a real shot at becoming Superman with the market the way it is.

A lot of people were saying this during the Nolan days. He was the most popular fan-cast other than Johnny Depp.

My favorite Riddler is from BTAS and Sirens. I'm not big into the wormy style we got from stories like The Long Halloween or the Arkham games. I like him dapper, composed, and confident.

I'd probably go with someone like Jude Law - who also happens to have the exact hairline and facial structure from BTAS and Hush.

I don't think hiding the villain from the marketing, is ever a good sign. Enchantress was obviously problematic. And even Ares wasn't quite what he could've been, in the Wonder Woman movie. So hopefully the villain is compelling and well-written. The threat needs to help sell this movie. And I'd like some more well known villains or even anti-heroes, to be included on the squad. There is no reason why Deathstroke shouldn't be in Suicide Squad 2. NONE!

Ares was okay, but they hid him so long in the film, that he became irrelevant. They should've had him do things in the background subtly instead of just being nonexistent. Make audiences question if he was influencing the war or not.

There also needed to be more of a battle of philosophies a la Ra's al Ghul vs Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins.

MoS also made a lot of money, and so did BvS - its direct sequel. JL failing to do so (another MoS sequel) is the reason Superman won't be back for a while.

I am actually really genuinely excited for this movie. The potential was all there in the first film; it was just squandered. But I fully expect them to tap into it properly with this sequel - “deepening” the characters sounds like just the right thing to me.

Personally, I’m hoping for a much more political thriller / conspiratorial vibe to this one, and I hope they explore Waller’s character much more and depict her as more of a hero this time around (since we got full villain last time, and she’s more of a mix of both). Maybe while we see the team going through black ops stuff, we see Waller dealing with a blackmailing Dexter Tolliver or something and we can get a taste of some of her tragic backstory.

  12. SΛŁIM Avatar
    SΛŁIM

And according to more information, they're trying to get the movie to have a black ops style and be more earthy so that it can find the way to an R-rating. However, whatever its classification, I only hope that 'Suicide Squad 2' is infinitely better than the first one.

I hope the plot of this movie will be something simple. Like the Squad being tasked with retrieving a powerful weapon that could be a metahuman or an artifact that plays a key role in later movies , But what they don't know is that another assassin/mercenary has been hired by another organization to retireve the same weapon. Deathstroke in this case. I know this was the rumored plot but I really want it to come true.
