'Gotham' actor is co-writing 'Suicide Squad 2', with help from Geoff Johns

Todd Stashwick, an actor who played Richard Sionis on Gotham a few years ago, is co-writing Suicide Squad 2 along with director Gavin O'Connor and David Bar Katz. Stashwick announced the news today on an episode of DC Movie News.

Stashwick explained that he hit it off with director Gavin O'Connor on a movie they worked on together. Though Stashwick doesn't have any movie writing credits to his name, he said that he's been writing for years from TV shows to comics and video games. Stashwick is a lifelong DC fan, which made him a good fit. Stashwick went on to talk about working with DC's Geoff Johns, who seems to be helping out with Suicide Squad 2. Watch Stashwick talk about writing the movie and how he got involved in the video below around the 6:30 mark.

Suicide Squad 2 was expected to go into production later this year, but has been reportedly pushed back in favor of Margot Robbie's Birds of Prey. It is now expected to start shooting shortly after Birds of Prey wraps up.

      Because it makes editing much harder. Suicide Squad was very obviously written as a much longer movie and had to be heavily truncated. That's not solely Ayer's fault either; there's no reason WB should have okayed what was basically a 5 hour script.
      To give you an idea, the original Superman 78 script was so long that they realized it'd never fit one movie, which is why they split it in half and made all the stuff about General Zod and the Kryptonian exiles the sequel instead. That was all supposed to be one film originally.

      That doesn’t make it a mess. They have more material to work w/ to make the story more complete. Same thing w/ the music industry. Most bands write more material than they need for an album, & choose the best songs for it.

      An album is a whole different beast than a narrative like a film. When you write something that's twice as long as the finished product, a lot needs to be cut out. Sometimes it's extraneous stuff that didn't need to be there in the first place and could easily be done without, but that's clearly not the case in Suicide Squad.

      I’ve never heard of Ayer make 5 hours before in my life. And I highly doubt it’s true. Im pretty sure what we got on the screen was fairly close to what was originally there before cuts.
      But it’s pretty common for filmmakers to have much more footage than they need, actually, from what I understand. What becomes a problem is if they cut stuff that the movie DOES need, as many argue happened with BvS.

      That’s not how movies work lmao. They are not going to waste money on extra footage from the beginning to later maybe use it or in this case not even at all. Movies do reshoots when they they need it. That’s why there is something called a budget. You don’t want to waste so much money to the point you can’t make money. But you are clearly too numb to understand that. And btw these weren’t reshoots, they are filmed from the beginning and half way. Even reshoots that weren’t even usd. Extra footage. Good luck editing 5 hours footage and reduce it to two hours. Then not be sure what to use. Easy my ass.

      No, that looks entirely like what I said: him being polite and falling on his sword so he doesn't cost himself future job opportunities by blaming the studio. It was damn obvious to anyone who actually watched the movie that it suffered from some pretty heavy studio interference, which is something Ayer also denies. Not because it's not true, but because he's smart enough to know that pissing off his bosses isn't a smart career move.

      It was still his choice to not make Joker the main villain, it was his choice for that awful look for Joker, it was hit choice for that shitty version of Enchatress and what ever that awful CGI baddie was and it was his choice to make Joker devoted to Harley. I don't doubt his original cut is better and i don't doubt WB didn't screw things up more but the end of the day i still reckon his original cut was still awful with the reaction to it not being that much better if that was released instead.

      I doubt that since the theatrical cut still made a killing at the box office. That tells you that people simply preferred the the random shit basically over the dark tone the first trailer had. You think folks would've flocked to see Joker pimp smacking Harley?
      And I for one think that it was good that he have Joker be the main villain. Let someone else get the spotlight, and don't copy Assault on Arkham.

      It doesn't matter if they hinted as abusiveness, the point is he loved her in the film and was obsessed like a love struck teen. Joker has no feelings for Harley, she's nothing more then his favorite toy, he looks at her like he would his Flower Acid. He might be curious in her due to the way she is with him and he might at times enjoy her company and likes her as his top henchman(woman) but he never cares if she's gone and sometimes doesn't even notice she's gone (in White Knight rather brilliantly he gets a "new" Harley thinking she's the original one and never once clicks its a different person), he only gets pissed when she befriends someone else because that means someone is playing with his toys and Joker doesn't share. The real Joker would have left her to her fate with SS and not give a fuck like he did in the comics.

      I wouldn’t say that at all. Nothing of the relationship in SS could have been called love. It was definitely a twisted and unhealthy relationship. He warped her mind in order to use her to escape, tortured her afterward, only finally properly let her talk to him after she chased him down and murdered some guy, was going originally to leave her to die in the chemicals at ACE, treated her like property with Monster T, left her for dead in the sunken car when he escaped after Batman got them, and evidently only spent the rest of the movie trying to get her back out of extreme possessiveness of “his toy,” as one could say, another classic trait of abusive relationships. I would say that is more than just “hinting” at abusiveness. Sure, it might not have been as extreme as we might expect, but it was a small part of the movie anyway, and at least they can explore it with more depth in a movie that can devote more focus to it.

      You do realize that is common in filmmaking, right? Black Panther supposedly has a four hour cut. I remember hearing about one romantic comedy that had a 90 minute theatrical runtime, but during development its runtime was damn near three hours long. Movies, before going to the cutting room, tend to be a lot longer than their theatrical cuts.

      Oh Christ. Most movies tend to have scenes cut for various reasons. Even films like Terminator 2, which was already over 2 hours long, had scenes cut in order to shorten the runtime. So no I’m not pulling this out of my ass. This is easy to find out if you just do a simple Google search.

The actors and actresses were shocked of how much footage was left out, and said so much hard work went into it. That we didn’t even get to see enough of the Joker.
      There was no way they would have put a 3 hours movie for Suicide Squad especially when the end product was so damn boring. If it was, it wouldn’t have made half of the money it made in the box office.

      It was a big budget film. Of course it was gonna have lot of extra footage. Even the LoTR films each had a shit ton of cut scenes. Again, Black Panther has a supposedly four hour cut. This was already proven by the sound designer of JL. Even he said that blockbusters tend to have a lot of extra footage before they head to the cutting room. So criticizing Ayer for shooting a lot of footage is both useless and plainly dumb.

      You don’t compare LOTR to a much smaller project in Suicide Squad. Again we are talking about 5 hours footage, for a 2 hours movie. BP was 2 hours and a half. The reason why it had extra footage because of the reshoots. Reshoots that was added in the movie. We are talking about real footage that are ready to use on screen. We didn’t even get to see Joker in the movie as much, the actors and actresses themselves admitted that there was so much footage that didn’t make it in the movie. Reshoots that weren’t even used so wasting more money for nothing. That’s why 5 hours is unheard off. Not just footage of random stuff that are not probably finished like Snyder imaginary JL cut.

      Was it 5 hours of footage? There is a difference between 3 hours than 2 hours extra. So extra footage is not uncommon, it’s the amount of that was uncommon. You can make two movies out Suicide Squad. You can’t say that for the ones you listed, they were probably reshoots to use for the movie. Suicide Squad didn’t use all the footage that was supposedly reshoots as well. You can go watch the actors and actresses talk about it. They said there was so much footage. And the movie looked badly edited because of it. It didn’t connect well. The movie was boring, it had nothing going for it.

I’m not really looking forward to it much, either, and would definitely prefer getting SS2 right away, but I don’t think it’ll flop hard. A movie about 2 teams of women... that’s like Wonder Woman x6, lol. It’ll have instant good will.

      Ocean is sitting at 71 on rt, the score will go down in the next few days. A Bop movie is too early, dc should work on the main characters and getting them right first. Bop could be successful if released at the right time, im not trying to see batgirl when Batman solo is not even out yet, which i think is where she needs to make her first appearance.

      Sure. There's always an outlier. You can point to scattered counter examples for almost anything. That doesn't change the fact that movies that receive positive reception and word of mouth are likelier to get people to go see them, particularly in an era where everyone has access to Rotten Tomatoes.
      In fact it's such a powerful tool that there are high profile filmmakers who have complained that being able to see reviews has hurt their films.

      We both know why these movies overperformed, but that's another story. I never denied that good reviews and good word of mouth wasnt a big boost, all im saying is that its not guaranteed, and you made it seem that if a movie gets high projections with good reviews, that it'll be an instant hit. Which brings us back to oceab 8, good projections with decent reviews doesnt mean it'll be a box office hit.

      No, as i mentioned before to someone else, i clearly said that its about timing. DC needs to focus on its main characters and get them right before anything else, Justice league is a prime example that people dont trust the brand anymore, and aquaman will suffer from that as well. Doing a Bop now would be rushing, we dont even have a flash or a Batman movie yet, which i think this is where batgirl should be introduced, or in SS2. I said that ocean 8 will flop because i look at the bigger picture, look at ocean's 8 competition, IW, deadpool 2, solo,Jurassic world, and the incredibles next week. That movie was released at a bad time, not to mention that people dont really like the gender switch.

      I actually think the fact that people don't trust the brand anymore is all the more reason to do something widely unconnected from the rest of the franchise. Much like how Suicide Squad managed to be a hit despite being terrible and coming off the negative reactions to Batman v. Superman. If BOP is marketed well and is actually good, there's every chance people will actually go see it.

      Infinity War and Deadpool 2 have both been out for several weeks by now, Solo was a flop (by your own account, even) and while Jurassic World and Incredibles 2 are both concerned, Ocean's 8 only cost 70 million to make, meaning its threshold for breaking even is much lower than your typical blockbuster.
      As for the gender switch, most people offline don't really care about stuff like that. Changing a character's gender or race is something that causes flame wars on message boards, but isn't something that most average people get all up in arms about.

      Yeah but Solo is Ford and Ford is Solo, everything Solo is because of Ford, his greatest line is even something Ford improvised. Lets be honest Solo while a good character is nothing special, its because of Ford that Solo is arguably the greatest SW character. Yeah Ford couldn't play a young Solo but a Solo origin was never wanted or needed anyway, A New Hope is his Origin story and everything we needed to know about him was in that.
      End of the day Solo flopped because no one wanted it in the first, no one wanted to see it, no one wanted it without Ford and its only been a few months since the last SW film and its released at a time where it has to compete with stuff like IW, Deadpool 2 and the new Jurassic World film. Solo never stood a chance and was only made because Kennedy is devoid of ideas and Disney wants a SW film every year.

    I haven't kept up enough with Ocean's 8 to have an opinion, though. But I am one of the few people on the internet who didn't think Ghostbusters was that bad, haha. I thought for sure I'd hate it, too, because the original is so beloved to me, especially after I saw that awful first trailer, but I actually found it pretty funny in its own way, and I really loved all the cameos and references to the originals... Don't kill me...

  Because DC need to win back the audience by establishing the main characters(which they haven't yet) before they start exploring other characters. Bop will probably come out before The Batman, which is a big problem.

    They really dont have to "establish" the main characters, especially in relation to Suicide Squad. Not everything has to be interconnected and reliant on other projects.

      I think they do have to establish the main characters first, and introducing birds of prey in one movie will hurt it, its not like ss where you can just glide over the characters origins.

Why are some people reacting negatively to this news? The guy sounds decent, is trusted by the director/writer, and is working with others to put together a script that does justice to the characters.
And it's really exciting to me to know he seems to be big DC fan. What more do you want?
Also, on a more personal note, I'm glad he's finally getting something he's writing out there, unlike the number of projects that never lifted off he mentions.

    You can take Mel Gibson over whoever you want, that's your choice. That doesn't mean he'd be a good fit for a DC movie, or any superhero movie for that matter. The man comes with a crazy amount of baggage and in the publicity intense world of superhero/comic-book movies, he'd be a liability. This isn't an argument against his talents, they speak for themselves, it's just that he's probably the last guy the DCEU want or need right now.
    Also, calm your britches, Gavin O'Connor is not some "whatever" director.

That baggage is long gone, especially after another Oscar nominated film in Hacksaw Ridge which was amazing, unless you’re a snowflake. Anybody who doesn’t think Mel Gibson wouldn’t be great for a SS film doesn’t know Mel Gibson or film period.

I'm actually much more inclined to believe The Hollywood Reporter because unlike Ayer, they don't have a vested interest in keeping the WB bosses happy and not saying anything that'd make the film look bad.
