Rumor: 'Supergirl' has director Reed Morano at the top of Warner Bros.' wish list

Earlier this month we learned that Warner Bros. was working on a Supergirl movie (not connected to the TV show) and that they wanted a woman to direct it. Now thanks to a new rumor, we may know who is at the top of their wish list.

According to Geeks WorldWide, Reed Morano is at the top of Warner Bros.' list of Supergirl directors. Morano is a cinematographer turned director and is best known for her directing work on the TV shows The Handmaid's Tale and Billions.

Geeks WorldWide adds that an offer hasn't been made and they aren't even sure if Morano has met with the studio yet.

Maybe because Catwoman, Elektra, and Supergirl 1984, all directed by men, sucked and bombed at the box office. While Wonder Woman was directed by a woman and was critically praised and made a ton of money. So they figure avoid the mistakes of the past and go with what worked.

A little sad that this is sounding like it’s being pushed to production yet we’re waiting for MoS2 with our thumbs up our asses. But, the hopeful in me wants this to feature Supes as the guiding mentor and then get that sequel that’s overdue.

      Not really. His character arc has just been brought to a place where he can begin a great journey as the Superman we all know and love in his best form, I want to see that long before I have to endure a dozen supporting characters brought into the mix.

      I liked what they were doing in building his character organically and exploring all of the implications of his existence in each movie as they develop. But that’s not the issue here, ultimately. Regardless of whether that was a good choice or not, it happened, and so because things are that way, this is not the right time for the story and its world to start pulling a classic WB and start rushing things for a quick money grab.

      I think it is valid as an experimental and/or alternate take on superman film. I think it's a failure as the first movie in establish a new shared universe and reintroducing the character into the minds of the public.

      I dont see how. In marvel terms we would be in phase 2 now. Crazy apocalyptic events have already happened in this universe. I feel this is more to do with people not liking the execution as opposed to the actual reality of the situation.
      But anyways, i would agree if not for the fact that they did 3 movies with Superman and its been so long since Man of Steel now. Im ready to push the mythology forward. I dont need them to do another "Solo" film just focusing solely on Supes simply for the sake of them :getting it right" or whatever.

      It don't matter. The character's been around enough at this point that a spin-off character ain't gonna be much of a problem. Hell, if the rumors are true they already scripted a cameo for him in Shazam (though whether or not it'll be filmed is up in the air right now with Henry's contract negotiations).

      Again, he's been in three movies. We know his love interest and his supporting cast. The foundation is established. Not to mention that all you really need to know to establish Supergirl is that there was a planet named Krypton and it blew up, and that one of the few survivors was a baby who landed on Earth named Kal-El.

Judging her past work i think she's a promising choice but i can't say i care or want a Supergirl film especially when "Man Of Steel 2" should be priority over this. I get that Wonder Woman has proved female fronted superhero films can work and do well and yeah i want more female superhero films but not Supergirl especially when her last film was shit and she has a TV show whats mixed at best. Give us Batwoman (yes very unlikely now i know), give us a Jessica Cruz GL film, give us a Mistar Miracle film with Barda as joint lead, how about a Harley and Ivy film as well. I like Supergirl sure but i don't think she's worth a solo film.

hm see thats the thing. Everybody has their opinions. And whenever a new movie is announced, as far as how excited they are for it, it basically just comes down to how much the individual likes the character. For instance Deathstroke is one of my favorites and I honestly want a Deathstroke movie almost as much as Batman or Man of Steel 2(and I dont want Man of Steel 2 because I feel morally obliged to and can't get excited for anything until I see that movie, i just really like Superman). But does that mean I think we "need" a deathstroke movie? Not really. However personally I do think a Supergirl movie could be really cool for one of the same reasons I want a superman movie. I like the mythology.

  Well, yes it did work for Marvel. One advantage of B list characters is they are less well known, so they have more creative freedom. But well enough known that the general public is interested in them. So an Iron Man or a Thor can compete with Spider-Man.

It isn't WB's job to just make the films you want them to make. They want to make films for other people too. And I think Supergirl is more popular than the characters you listed so they want to go with a film the most people would want to see. How many people have even heard of Barda. She'd need a lot more promotion than Supergirl.

    Her last film was 30 years ago. If having a flop was a reason not to reboot a movie WB would have given up after Superman IV. Or at least after Superman Returns. So Superman has had two flops with Superman since the last Supergirl movie but they went ahead and made Man of Steel. And what makes you think people don't want a Supergirl movie. She is the most famous DC female after Wonder Woman. Has her own comic book. And even a TV show. Plus all the girls that dress up as Supergirl for Halloween and various Comic Cons.       Supergirl isn't the most famous DC female after Wonder Woman, Catwoman is actually more famous and you could argue Batgirl is as well, right now though Harley Quinn is way more popular and known.
      Yeah she her own comic but that isn't doing well and her comics have rarely been a success because she struggles to hold own series, she's at her best in other peoples comics. She has a TV show sure but that just apes Superman and is actually a pretty mixed series what appeals mostly to young females and no one else, again Kara is at her best in the crossovers.
      Look just because feminist blogs want Supergirl doesn't mean the majority do, ask some regular person on the street and they will either say no to it or "doesn't she already have a TV show though?". As for Mister Miracle? Yeah his comic is doing better then Supergirl's right now and film based on him could do well, if little known characters couldn't do well then the MCU would have flopped before Avengers but hey ignore that.

Jesus Wonder Woman is my favorite DC film since The Dark Knight Rises and was one of my favorite films of last year. You clearly don't comment or visit here much because if you did you would see i 100% support and defend female superhero films and have defended Wonder Woman and the upcoming Batwoman TV show (what i've really looking forward too).

I can't help thinking it is a mistake to make films about "derivative" female superheroes like Batgirl or Supergirl. It could work for Harley Quinn but she isn't called Jokergirl.

DC has plenty of women who are not living in the shadow of a major character by design and would make for more original films: Vixen, Zatanna or even someone like Poison Ivy - strongly associated with Batman but without a derivative name and history.

There are two things about Supergirl that are key differentiators between her and her cousin. First, she remembers Krypton (or Argo City). She grew to somewhere near tween-hood there. She knows first-hand what she lost. Second, unlike Superman who is a big, burly dude with a Boy Scout reputation to uphold, Kara is, as Martian Manhunter once described her on the TV show, "a pretty blonde cheerleader" and comes across as less naturally intimidating... which gives her the luxury Clark does not have of being able to completely lose her shit on a foe on occasion (read "Man of Steel" from this summer).

Nah. There's really no reason to believe that it wouldn't work just because she's a spin-off character. If anything, the negative reputation the recent films Superman's been in would be more of a concern than the fact that she has Super in her name. But even that's not particularly damning, as Wonder Woman has shown.
If the movie's good and marketed well, people will show up.

  Well another big and main reason was TASM2 under-performed and caused a lot of problems for Sony's "Spider-Verse", you also had the leaked emails what revealed there had been talks of Spider joining the MCU what fell through what got a fair amount of backlash, so between that and a massive failure of a cinematic universe going into a joint deal with Marvel what will get you success was a pretty good bet.
  Replacing Garfield made sense because TASM films aren't in the MCU and there wasn't any wiggle room of fitting them in and not causing canon problems, doing another reboot for once was the better choice as proved as Holland is really popular as Spidey and is loved by the majority of fans. I do admit Garfield did have his problems but he did love playing Spidey, he's a Spidey fanboy himself and was really critical of Sony on how they handled TASM2 (what i'm sure pissed Sony off). I think with Garfield though is he's not someone who likes the limelight and doing public events and stuff, he's always pretty nervous and awkward in interviews and i think he would rather not do that stuff, he's very much an actor who does it because he loves acting rather then because he wants the money and fame.

    The thing here is, none of those are objective realities. Those are your opinions because you dislike the character. That doesn't mean she doesn't need to be on the screen or "needs" her story told. Particularly when she's a more popular and viable leading character than say, someone like Cyborg.
    Talking about who "deserves" a movie in the current environment is fruitless since we're no longer in an era where the existing popularity of the characters really matters. But even if it did, Supergirl is still one of DC's most recognizable characters.

    DC is obviously jumping in to establishing the universe just by expanding it and showing us more characters, and I'm OK with that.
    Let the audience grow to like Superman after the soft reboot, so when MoS does come, it won't have baggage attached and people will want to go and see it.

Wonder Woman cost $150 million to make. They could probably make a Supergirl movie with the same budget. While MoS 2 would probably cost at least the $250. So even if Supergirl makes less money, WB would still be ahead.

I thought for a moment that the director was nto a woman, how naive of me. Also they just want to replicate the success of Wonder Woman, as if was a great movie.

Even though the actress on the Supergirl show is closer to my age, in the comics and typically Supergirl is for a younger audience so I will be more attentive to movies such as 'Birds of Prey' and the Joker that are for mature audiences. I think it would be cool if there were a sequel to the 'Man of Steel' movie featuring Supergirl. By the way i wont be commenting as much on this website because the pop up advertising is really crashing my phone, it takes forever this is the only site that does it
