Hans Zimmer is officially out of superhero movie retirement!*

Zimmer, who wrote the music for Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel, and Batman v Superman, claimed he was done with superhero movies in 2016. Since then, he's hinted that he would come back if someone had a really great idea, and it sounds Wonder Woman 1984 was it.

Hans-Zimmer.com is reported that Zimmer has officially signed on to score the Wonder Woman sequel, Wonder Woman 1984. Zimmer, along with Junkie XL, wrote the iconic Wonder Woman theme that we first heard in Batman v Superman.

    I'm glad to see people got some fun out of it, but it was so subtle and obscured that it had almost no impact on the film experience for me. Didn't feel special like it should have.
    Love the idea on paper, though. Hell, I love the idea of Elfman doing the soundtrack for any movie on paper. It just didn't pan out here, sadly.

    There were places in JL (like the cornfield) where the MoS Superman piano theme should have appeared. But I loved hearing the WW theme in full orchestra, I still prefer Elfman's Batman theme to all others (SS didn't use JXL's Bat-drums either, fwiw) and it's always great to hear John Williams.

      Junkie XL's "theme" shouldn't even be called a theme. And the very beloved "Beautiful Lie" is actually a remake of a compisition that Steven Jablonsky did for Tears of the Sun movie, where Zimmer was the main composer.

    The JL score was horrendous, the WW theme in particular. For the record, I thought Rupert Something Williams did an awesome job in WW, but I am definitely cool with Zimmer bringing his kick-ass abilities to the sequel.

  I trully loved Danny Elfman for his previous works, but I've never felt so much disappointed by a movie sountrack before Justice League. For me Danny Elfman has utterly ruined Justice League sountrack. At least with have a "Everybody knows" from... Sigrid.

My anticipation level for WW84 just increased substantially (not that I wasn’t already excited though, but this is easily the best news I’ve heard all day). In other words, release the hype engine

I have no idea why people still think it's not going to be released. Films of that scale do not just sit on the shelves after that much cash has been poured into them, unless it's due to something like legal issues or disasters on set.

    The deal will not be finalized until next year, so anything involving Dark Phoenix not being released opens up a whole bunch of potential lawsuits, as well as possible collusion charges if it's discovered that Disney was muscling them into dropping a movie.

  Depends on what is in the contract of Disney buying fox and what it says to do with currently and already filmed movies at the time of the buyout. With marvel studios as successful as it is, adding X-men to the MCU could be a reason to not release the movie if they feel that dark Phoenix would miss up their plans to have a x-men/ avengers crossover

It makes sense. He did an interview where he said why he retired from superhero movies, and apparently a lot of it was not feeling comfortable with the new depiction of Batman after having worked on Nolan's, as well as the quality of the script.
"Ron Howard actually said something very smart to me. He said, “Don’t say you will never do a superhero movie again. Wait for somebody to turn up with an amazing script for a superhero movie.” And I suppose that’s what I’m saying: Can I please have the amazing script?
It just did my brain in to have written Christian Bale as Batman, and suddenly it’s Ben Affleck [in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice]. And it felt like I was betraying everything Christian had done. So there’s a certain amount of loyalty attached to those movies, as well.

I spent months trying to come up with something for Ben. The Batman that I know and the one I learned is the one that Christian did, and Ben plays it differently. And I can’t quite shake that off. For me, the Christian Bale character was always completely unresolved. It was always about that moment at the beginning of the first movie, where he sees his parents getting killed. It was basically arrested development. The Ben character is more middle-aged; he seems to be grumpy as hell, but I didn’t feel the pain that I felt in Christian’s performance. And it was that pain that made me interested."

So he doesn't have a pre-existing attachment to a prior version of Wonder Woman that he found better, and the script for WW84 must've been good enough to catch his eye.

I don't think I can fully express how happy this makes me. Whilst I liked the score from Wonder Woman 2017, I missed the heavy drums, pounding rhythm and huge sounding brass section that Hans provides. Welcome back Hans!

  I really loved the WW score, and I am so happy the same person is doing Aquaman, but basically nothing beats Hans Zimmer.

    I don't know. Hans is one of the greats for sure, but the score for WW was excellent. No Man's Land music felt epic. I'm not sure Hans would've done better.

      I adored the music in that scene so much. But I think Hans might have been able to pull off something similar; I mean, he has never failed to blow me away with his scores before. I’m just glad we’ve got both of these great people on board with DC movies, as both are so capable of making legendary music that these characters deserve!

Fantastic! One of the best composers living now. His WW theme is iconic. Though a tiny part of me felt a bit sorry for Rupert Greyson Williams, but then I remembered he’s doing Aquaman. So all is right with the world!
The only question is. Who will Sanberg get for Shazam?

      Rupert's best work IMO is his score for Hacksaw Ridge. In fact, I heard a touch of it in Wonder Woman, especially during the No Man's Land scene.
      I'm happy he's coming back for Aquaman.

I've always felt like Hans Zimmer was afraid to do something less good than his Molossus theme from the TDK trilogy, and that was one of the reasons he has collaborated with JunkieXL and let him do the new "Batman in action" theme (yes I consider the new "Batman in action theme" as really inferior to the Molossus theme). Btw, really happy to see Hans coming back after Elfman's shameful soundtrack for Justice League.

  With Wonder Woman he gets to work on a character he's relatively fresh with and the script likely is up to snuff as well.

    Yes, I know, but it doesn't change my opinion about the fact that Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard did something trully amazing with the Molossus theme in TDK trilogy, and that Hans was afraid to do something less good comparing to his previous work, that's why he worked with JunkieXL for the Batman v Superman movie. I think that Hans can share a success with another composer, but he cannot do a flaw alone.

      That doesn't really sound like he's afraid of anything. He wasn't wild about the movie or the direction of the character, so he decided to do something else.

      They did do something special, that's for sure, but then they topped that with the sequel's score; track: like a dog chasing cars; however, that cue never made it into the actual movie due to it being a hero's theme and Nolan didn't want the batman to become a hero, but a dark knight. Also, that scene (joker driving the semi) played much better without music

To be fair, the news of Zimmer's involvement came from a cast member. I don't think there was ever any official confirmation. Even the trades like THR sited the cast member, and couldn't verify the news with their own sources.

  I think it's a tragedy that X-Men are joining the MCU. Many people are happy about it, many self-described fans, who think that Fox's X-Men were too dark and depressing. But if any comic book property needed to be dark, it was X-Men due to their core themes. Who expects MCU to tackle the issues of prejudice with that much force? It won't. Just like Spider-man, X-Men will be stripped of all the deep and important emotional baggage.
