Hans Zimmer comes out of superhero retirement to score 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix'

"I have officially retired from the superhero business," legendary composer Hans Zimmer said in a 2016 interview shortly after the release of Batman v Superman. Since then, Zimmer has flirted with the idea of coming out of retirement, saying that it'd take a "great idea" to get him back.

Apparently that great idea was X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Collider has heard whispers that Zimmer would score that movie, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix star Evan Peters seemed to confirm it on Josh Horowitz’s podcast Happy Sad Confused.

"I think the film is gonna be incredible," Peters said on the topic of X-Men: Dark Phoenix. "Hans Zimmer’s scoring it—I don’t know if I was supposed to say that or not."

If Zimmer is truly out of superhero retirement, hopefully we can get him back into the world of DC as well. His work (along with Junkie XL's) was greatly missed by many fans in Justice League.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters on November 2nd.

Dark Phoenix better be damn good (which I wasn't really expecting it to be) if it was able to bring Hans out of retirement.

  I actually love most of the X-Men films, they are either Amazing or Terrible, there is rarely a middle ground, Logan, DOFP, and First Class are among my favorite CBM's, but I'm judging based on Apocalypse's mediocrity, and I honestly don't think this actress can lead a film.

  I love the X-Men films but honestly i'm not that excited for Dark Phoenix, my main gripe is that Simon Kinberg is directing despite having never directed before and that he also comes across more like a suit from Fox rather then an actual guy who cares for these films beyond money. Also while i liked Turner as Jean i do think they are rushing into Dark Phoenix way too soon, they already screwed that story up once so i hope they don't do it again.

    Marvel is gonna reboot the X-Men into the MCU anyway in a few years so I don't know why you even worry about Dark Phoenix being too soon.
    And let's not pretend that basically anything in BvS or a Justice League movie itself wasn't too soon either.

      Mixed, on one hand it would be cool seeing Wolverine and Storm sharing screen time with Hulk and Black Panther but on the other hand i don't want to lose the more adult feel the X-Men films have (and the R-rated stuff as well). My main problem is how do you explain it? Its pretty clear Mutants aren't a thing in the MCU. I suppose with Marvel doing them we might get more comic accurate suits and powers, we might also get more focus on characters not named Wolverine, Charles, Magneto and Mystique as well.

        Yeah maybe Phase 4 could end with a X-Men Vs Avengers film or something what combines the universes and history but keeps the cast, it would be one hell of a retcon what would piss people off but i don't know really. Might be best just rebooting the X-Men entirely with a new cast and history free of the baggage of the current one in a new universe what is part of the MCU Multiverse and keep the crossovers for event films like an X-Men Vs Avengers film.

      I don't think it's right that Disney should be allowed to purchase the Fox entertainment assets. Disney has gotten too big. I know that it's fun to have all the Marvel comics characters together in the same cinematic universe, but there are more important things in the world than comic book movies.

        And the reason why monopolies are still a problem in the realm of entertainment is because most of us consume these types of products on daily basis, and even comic book movies can influence the way we think. Can't you see how movies can be subtly used for political propaganda purposes?
        Propaganda can be used for good or bad reasons, but we need to preserve alternative choices of media products, in case we don't like the messages being pushed on us through our films and TV shows. :)

Zimmer was missed yes. But Junkie XL is pure garbage and almost ruined the BvS score with his constant noise. He is no Zimmer and never will be.

    Which I will never be able to comprehend in my life. The MoS score and the WW score were so much better. And if you really want to listen to some of the best scores ever made then nothing comes close to John Williams Star Wars and Howard Shores Lord of the Rings.
    I also really love Steve Jablonskys Transformers scores. That man is practically made for superhero scores. But BvS was just noise. especially the Batman theme. Just an assault on the ears. No emotion, no majesty, no actual melody even. Thats why MoS was so much better. Zimmer should have used more themes from it for BvS instead of letting Junkie XL flood it with his garbage.

      I’ll never understand the few people I’ve encountered who DIDN’T like BvS’ music. I thought that and Snyder’s visuals were one of the few things most of us could agree on.
      Well, I mean those are classics. They have a special place all to themselves.
      Surely you’re joking! No emotion or majesty?! Those are literally some of the first words to pop into my head when I think of the BvS score! A Beautiful Lie is absolutely gorgeous, The Red Capes Are Coming is perfect, Is She With You was utterly epic, Superman’s theme particularly as it’s played for his funeral and the dirt lifting to credits, the song played in the climax of the battle with Doomsday (all of which had melodies, by the way), just SO MUCH AWESOMENESS... I still am not sure Batman even had a theme, however, so I can’t comment on that. What BvS did for me more uniquely and powerfully and prominently than many movie scores was really TELL the story and give us a look INSIDE the characters’ minds and souls. It did it so beautifully and dramatically. Grand and epic. It was like heavy metal and classical music had a glorious baby that could perfectly convey emotions and psyche in audio form.
      The score was literally one of the biggest highlights of the whole movie for me upon first viewing.

        Besides the WW theme, I honestly can't remember any music from that movie and that kinda confuses me, I usually make a point of listening to the music. Now I have to go look it up.

        BvS' score IS beautiful, but it did take me some time to warm to it, mainly because the rest of the movie kinda threw me for a loop and was a lot to take in. I gave it another listen shortly after I got the movie on Blu-ray and realized how gorgeous it was. Now I'm learning Beautiful Lie, and What Are Going to Do When You're Not Saving the World on piano lol.
        Btw, Beautiful Lie is Batman's theme! The melody is usually placed in the movie when he's experiencing fear/paranoia/sadness (when his parents are shot, arguing with Alfred, the Martha turnpoint), and the crashing chords from the beginning of the piece are incorporated into his fight scenes and epic moments, mostly. I can't remember at the moment if it's in the warehouse scene or not. :P

  Junkie is the single worst composer working in Hollywood right now. I fucking cringe when people have the audacity to defend such an obscene lack of talent on his part. He's a really cool and nice guy irl, and that's about as much as you can say about him. His skills as a composer are complete trash.

      Barely anyone cares for Deadpool's score, its the licensed tracks what remember music wise, Fury Road was ok but only Brothers In Arms truly stands out. As for his Batman theme yeah its not that good and no where near as iconic as Elfman's 89 Theme or Zimmer's work, once you factor in Walker's music or hell even Christopher Drake then well Junkie's theme just gets forgotten. When reading Batman i assure you people don't hum or think of Junkie's music.

        You're kidding, only Brothers in Arms? Blood Bag, Storm is Coming are both awesome.
        It's only iconic because it was released first. Swap the two themes and no one would give a shit about Elfman's because they'd be dummies like you that can't analyze music on its own without comparing to others. I agree it's not as good as Elfman's, Zimmer's, or Drake's work, but it's still a solid score and prevents him from being labeled the worst composer in the industry.

  I think my favorite score of his is Interstellar, its very different to his usual stuff and captures the mystery of space very well as well as being very emotional music, it pisses me off he never got a Oscar for that score.

    His Interstellar score is also just incredible! It’s right around MoS for my favorite. And it is such a damn shame he got robbed by The Grand Budabest Hotel at the Oscars that year.

    Last Samurai is his best one, honestly. Multiple motives, he finally uses some damn woodwinds for a change (albeit minimal, but still), progressing themes, a conservative and appropriate usage of percussion, etc. The sound of a Cello is indescribably beautiful, imo. Thin Red Line has a really good central theme, but it doesn't offer anything besides that.

      Anyone else heard Zimmer's score from Dreamworks' Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron? That soundtrack is absolutely beautiful and I'd rate alongside the Man of Steel score. I have to listen to it at least a few times a year. He uses a lot of sounds that evoke Native American/ colonial America in it, along with his trademark uplifting musical themes.

Shame John Ottman isn't returning as he actually gave the XM film a consistent theme (his X-Men 2 theme) what i really loved, his DoFP and Apocalypse scores were pretty decent and his X-Men 2 score is the series high point music wise. Still Zimmer is fucking amazing so i'm looking forward to hearing it especially as he chose to skip JL sadly, hopefully he doesn't phone it in.

....but he couldn't be freaking bothered to just do Justice League. Yes, I am salty. I know he had his reasons and he is still my favorite composer ever but MAN was that frustrating. Certain parts of Elfman's score have grown on me. I actually like the theme he wrote for the Justice League quite a bit but unfortunately it feels tainted because of that ONE little part where it just sounds a little bit too much like the Avengers. Why couldn't Elfman use ANY of Zimmer's music? Why? At least we got the old batman theme back(which I thought worked just fine in the movie). Overall though the score just doesn't give you the same epic/mythic feeling Man of Steel and BvS had

  Although I dearly missed Zimmer's work while watching JL, I'm also glad he kept his hands clean of it. Sugar-coating a turd keeps WB from learning it's lesson with as much impact.
  If the movie had gone the way it was meant to, I could see his score fitting, and it would be less of an embarrassment for him. Could've been majestic and monumental.
  Sadly, it didn't, and I really question if he could see what was happening with WB's BS and backed out because of it.

        I just hope a fan cut will be enough to redeem the film completely. I mean, just looking at the trailers, even every little normal shot just looks so much better with Snyder. There’s no way we’ll ever be able to get it all back unless they release his cut. Honestly, truly breaks my heart.

        It was alright, way overrated though. It just felt a little draggy by the end, not to mention it helped further screw up that mess of a timeline they’ve got. But I was mainly referring to the AWFUL Apocalypse.

        I didn't hate Apocalypse, but it was obviously inferior to Days and First Class. Still, it had its moments.

        To be fair, I’ve only seen it once.
        I just could not stand the constant, blatant disregard for continuity, the done-to-death dynamic between Magneto and Professor X, and one of the worst superhero movie villains ever. That’s all I remember of the movie, lol
        Also remember Jennifer Lawrence giving a speech that just came off as weird to me at the end...
        And some other annoying/boring stuff...
        However, Quicksilver’s speed scenes are always a treat.

        The X-Men continuity has been screwed up since Origins: Wolverine. It's best not to think about it after that and just enjoy it for what it is.
        The continuity is totally screwed up in LOGAN for example, but that movie is a damn near masterpiece in spite of it.
        As for Prof. X and Magneto, I loved their conflict. It's the most interesting dynamic across all the X-Men films and it's made even better by the juxtaposition it has with the future version where Magneto says "All those years wasted fighting each other, Charles." And J Lawrence in Days was decent enough. You could tell she was starting to get sick of it, but she still put in enough effort to be likable IMO. It was only until Apocalypse where she all but gave up trying.
        Again, to each their own though. I'm not trying to force you to like what I like - unlike certain OTHER people around these parts. :p

        I totally get what you’re saying about Magneto and X, used to be one of my favorite parts, too! It’s just in that particular movie, after already seeing Magneto seemingly go through his journey what felt like 4 or 5 times now, his suddenly going back and doing it all over again just felt tedious and overdone. Though it probably didn’t help that his turning this time was essentially just him globe-hopping with Blue Man Group and his random club :P

      This is all completely irrelevant to anything either of us said, but I’ll respond to each point, anyway.
      MoS was liked by a majority of the critics. BvS, yes, most critics disliked. But so what? JL most critics disliked, but a significant portion did like - I, however, did not like it. I DID like MoS and BvS, though.
      Character portrayals and box office numbers are completely separate ideas, first of all, but secondly, the ONLY DCEU movie to get genuinely bad box office numbers so far is JL. So...
      Actually, most of the general audience liked every DCEU movie so far. So...
      Not only is your comment about directors baseless, but it’s also unintelligible. Good job.
      Hans Zimmer explicitly says he retired because doing all those Batman movies took a lot out of him and he had been stuck in that character for so long. The negative reaction to BvS I’m not even sure was apparent yet when he announced it. Regardless, if he didn’t like BvS, he wouldn’t have signed on to do the music for if he didn’t want to. He also did the music for the terrible Amazing Spider-Man 2. Quit being idiotic while pretending you’re smarter than everyone, lol

        Character portrayals & general audience & box-office aren't separate at all because if there were good character portrayals, General audience would support movie at box-office & 800 millions is disaster for a 300 million budget movie with three of most famous comic character(not all of 800 million goes to WB) & if general audience liked those movies, They would reach billion $ at box-office like TDK.

        Actually, no, I came to like BvS purely out of detaching myself from my biases. It’s the haters that I have noticed tend to be biased in their opinions - always citing things such as critics’ opinions or their particular preferences as supposedly undeniable proof the movie is bad.
        And I’m not just posting the opposite; I’m responding with my genuine beliefs, as well as facts.

        55% of critics liked MoS, not 50%. Go look at a dictionary and you might find that that is a majority.

But regardless, it still made BUCKETS of money and did perfectly fine; it was certainly no “disaster” LOL

Being in retirement is a PR released statement from the studio. Obviously the retirement was ...short lived. I am sure the real reason he took a "hiatus" was to get away from DC/WB. He is one of my favorite cinematic composers. Hopefully DC/WB will turn themselves around going forward and sway him back.

He never should've spoken about "superhero movie" retirement, in the first place. I don't think he enjoyed BvS at all, and likely did it because he felt kinda obligated to, after scoring The Dark Knight Trilogy and MoS. But each movie is different.

FUCK YEAH, the x-men saga is the one that has a consistently good quality, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse were awesome, Dark Phoenix is pretty probable it will great too, and after losing all faith in both the dccu and mcu, this is the way to go, Otmman did a great job but oh my Zimmer on this could take it to another level

I couldn't be happier that Hans Zimmer is making a superheroes musical score once again! :-D
I only wish that he was also working on a replacement score for the exalted "Snyder cut" of Justice League, along with his acoustic accomplice, Junkie XL!
Release the darn "Snyder cut" already! I have decided not to buy the home release of JL unless Snyder's version will be forthcoming later on. Why should I subsidise the suits who seem to be giving people like me a big slap in the face, with their rushed Blu-ray that includes only a single deleted scene? :-/
