Rumor: Tom Cruise willing to play Green Lantern on one condition?

Earlier this year we learned that Warner Bros. wanted Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie to helm Green Lantern Corps. They apparently couldn't come to a deal, but maybe talks will start up again, especially if today's rumor is true.

According to Crazy Days and Nights, Tom Cruise is (or was?) the front runner to play Green Lantern. With McQuarrie involved at one point, this definitely seems plausible. McQuarrie and Cruise have collaborated on about 7 movies now, and it's not hard to imagine McQuarrie would want Cruise to star in Green Lantern Corps if he were to direct.

There is a catch, however. If true, major spoilers follow. Read on if you choose...

According to the new rumor, the Green Lantern Corps script calls for Cruise's Green Lantern to die, and he doesn't want to. Apparently that part of the script would need to change for him to sign on. This is where the rumor gets a bit sketchy. It's unclear if this is old info referring to David Goyer's Green Lantern Corps script, or the new one that Geoff Johns is writing now.

Rumor or not... McQuarrie has expressed interest in directing Man of Steel 2 or Green Lantern Corps recently while promoting his new hit, Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Do you think he and Tom Cruise would be good choices? Let me know in the comments below.

I’d be okay with it, although I’d like to see someone younger just given the fact that Barry and Hal’s relationship is one of my favorites. Having a mid 20’s flash and a 40 year old Hal would be weird imo.

      Why can we never have a movie about John Stewart?
      I hope hal Jordan is played by cruise and I hope he dies and that's when John Stewart gets the ring.

  I’d rather not have another origin, but instead a well-established Hal. That being said, it’s unlikely since everyone seemed in shock by Superman. If Hal was around for as long as Bats, he’d already be helping. They can’t explain away his lack of involvement so far in my opinion unless he just hasn’t gotten the ring. That being said, Cruise would definitely be playing the cocky pilot he’s known for.

  Its a celebrity gossip site that known for running blind items (sometimes positive ones but mostly negative) and then revealing them from time to time. They mostly have a good reputation but have gotten items wrong before. Also rumor was Robert Downey Jr. was contributing to the site.

  cud set up parallax and emerald twilight if they kill him off at the end. hal doesnt have too strong a followin with the generation that grew up with the justice league unlimited show that had john stewart.

    Ahh, refreshing to have an actual conversation for a change. Yeah, I've actually thought about it a bit since I've written that comment, and you know... I think they could make it work. I have also never read GL specific comics, only thing I know about him is mostly from JL issues. That said, I'm aware of the Emerald Twilight storyline, and I've always assumed IF an actual GL trilogy of some sort ends up happening, that they will adapt said storyline.
    That said, it's a cool way of "changing him" and "killing the spirit of Hal" so to speak, but he wouldn't actually die if that were to happen. He'd just become evil, which I'm okay with if it's done over 2 films minimum.
    I think Tom mostly cares about Hal not physically dying and being the center of the attention, which he'll still be if he becomes Paralax, so it could happen.

      i dont think they want to go the evil route again after they poorly used evil superman in jl. my suggestion was do a bit of blackest night and emerald twilight where hal gets killed but his soul or ring is the basis for the creation of parallax.
      cruise is an interesting case. he seems to have an ego for sure but he makes damn good movies so i cant complain.

        Superman wasn't evil in JL. He was "confused" and "didn't know who he was". If anything, they should have gone more evil (mind control or whatever).
        In any case, Cruise playing the bad guy for once might actually be a cool to see.

it won't be a orign film. Interested in seeing cruise in a CG film again, Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow are the only things I can recall and they didn't really have any superpowers that I can remember.

I'd be okay with Hal dying but he wouldn't necessarily have to bite it. It sounds like the intention is to have John continue forward as the "main" Green Lantern if this becomes a franchise, but there's no reason Hal couldn't continue on as his mentor. Or hey, even the Spectre.
One day down the line we might finally get the Justice League together onscreen again.

  I think that having Hal dying and John heading the franchise is the right call because Tom Cruise is just too old and too big of a star to take the backseat to anyone else right now, besides Hal could die in the first movie and we could get Guy Gardner in the sequel replacing him, that would be cool.

so can we say Top Gun is the unofficial origin story of Hal... and instead of killing him, just have Hal pass the mantle to John Stewart and keep him as a mentor or have him go on a deep space mission and let JS take care of earth

Tom Cruise as Hal would be great. The movie will introduce other Lanterns and TC would have his own movie and can cameo in other movies down the line

      Yeah but Scott has nothing to do with the GLC and his powers are magic based and he's pretty unknown compared to Hal or Stewart. If a GLC features more then Hal and Stewart then it would be Guy or Kyle and at a push Jessica as she's a great female Lantern and that gets them more brownie points. Finally Geoff Johns is writing this and he knows the GL world better then anyone and cares it more then pretty much anyone, his GL run reshaped the GL universe forever and pretty much any modern element of GL is because of him.

I like Tom. I like Tom a lot.
But, I do not think he is right for this role. His height is an issue...it can be hidden to a point, but Hal is a tall jock type. Tom can be badass and cocky and physically intimidating, but he seems wrong for Hal. Kind of like how he was wrong for Reacher (which, I like those movies, but it sucks for fans of the books and thus it would suck for us, fans of the comics).
That aside...I think he is too old for this role. I don't mind him in action roles, age is just a number and he still is as capable as ever, and as an aging spy in the MI movies it'ss till fantastic to watch him. But, Hal is not 56, or even 50, or even 40, and as good as Tom looks he doesn't look like a 30 or even mid 30s guy.
I'd love him to join the DCU (ideally, a rebooted DCEU but whatever), but this role just doesn't seem like the best fit for him.

  Yeah but he's still looking and doing better then pretty much any other "Hollywood" actor, you see the stunts he was doing in Fallout? The guy is in his 50's now and is still doing stuff most people would be too scared of doing.

      the gls are constantly changing. i personaly wouldve preferred kyle rayner since i grew up reading his comics but havin hal as the initial gl works.

I love Cruise and i could believe he would make a great "older" Hal, my only problem would be the film would turn into a "Tom Cruise" film rather then a Green Lantern film. As for his GL dying well i don't believe that would be part of Johns script as there's no way he would ever kill off Hal.

Why would they kill off Hal Jordan in the first film? I doubt that rumor is true. Anyways, would love to see Tom Cruise as Hal Jordan. McQuarrie should direct both Green Lantern Corps and MoS2 since he already has worked with both Cruise and Cavill.

    Was this before or after the Twitter thing? ‘Cause I thought originally he made those comments about Superman or GL, but then saw the vitriol Arian Johnson was getting on Twitter for Star Wars and ended the conversation saying he’d now never do that type of movie after seeing that.

If they are looking for mature actors we have to admit that Tom Cruise is their best option. But he could play other characters instead, "the question" for example.
