David Goyer to write and produce 'Green Lantern Corps' movie

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has hired David Goyer and Justin Rhodes to write the script for Green Lantern Corps, based on a story by Goyer and Geoff Johns. Goyer will also serve as a producer.

Deadline says that the movie is described as Lethal Weapon in space, and is based on a comic book origin story. The focus will be on two characters: Hal Jordan, and John Stewart.

Goyer is best known among Batman fans for helping Christopher Nolan write his entire Dark Knight trilogy. He also wrote Man of Steel, and an early version of Batman v Superman, before Chris Terrio came in to rework it.

Green Lantern Corps is tentatively scheduled for a July 24, 2020 release. As with the other movies, that date can certainly change.

Update: During a 2013 reddit AMA, Goyer was asked how he would do a Green Lantern movie. His reply? "Better."

    You ain't never told a lie brother. You're definitely right. I don't really dislike the comic book movies he's written though, I just don't think he's the right fit for GLC. What do you think?

        Self-description is a valid testimony, unless there is evidence that clearly conflicts it. The fact is he has much derision towards the comic book fans to the point of mocking them as virgins for liking comics. Another troublesome sign is that he hasn't been on board with the DCEU project to begin with, as he famously said, "BvS is where you go when you run out of ideas" back then when the movie was in pre-production. I mean, he turned out right about that one, but still, he showed no interest or desire to help create something big and beautiful.
        At the end of the day, he is a prick, and I don't want a prick handling my DC world.

  Goyer and Terrio are both good writers who have written great films when being paired up with great directors. The only person who should be blamed for the critical failures of MoS and BvS is Hack Snyder. His filmmaking and storytelling abilities are terrible, and he was the one who vetoed the scripts of those two movies. The last film he wrote entirely on his own was that shitfest Sucker Punch.

    Yea it's very clear to see the ways in which Snyder has been fucking up. IMO it seems as if he doesn't think fans will mind if the story is a bit convoluted as long as it looks good haha

    He is a visual storyteller and most of his narrative is in the actual scenes and not necessarily in the text. Which is very valid of an approach as film is an audio (the writing) and visual (the framing, composition and shots) medium. Its just that we are all accustom to watching movies with a literary eye and not an artistic eye. Its not terrible, its just that he communicates in a different cinematic language.

      The ratings on RT say otherwise. The narrative of most good movies is in it's text and not it's scenes.The Hack uses most of his filmmaking energy on imagery and visuals, at the expense of everything else that makes a regular movie good. This leads to him making stupid but absurdly complex films. The visuals of the films makes the audience go, "ooh", but when it comes to the story he fails to capture the emotions of the audience, because he makes his characters so unrelatable and two-dimensional.

        Those "most good movies" of which you speak are not comic book movies. This genre receive a particular critical eye. Critics take it for granted that they are about to watch a movie for children and teenagers. Let's put aside that much of the blame for the bad reviews that the film has received are based on the poor editing of theatrical cut. Almost nobody sits in cinema thinking that they will find a drama (a tragedy in this case) of philosophical and political basis from characters such as Batman and Superman. You can remind me that the Dark Knight trilogy also planned a world almost as complex as BvS, but Nolan, unlike Snyder, takes extreme care to make the audience understand every last detail of his plots. He puts so much effort in this task that sometimes verges on the absurd. Example, Interstellar: Nolan placed an astrophysicist teaching an aerospace engineer what a wormhole is with the analogy of the folded paper and the pencil, which is like seeing a gynecologist explaining a traumatologist about human reproduction using the analogy of mommy, daddy and the seeds; and the most complex part of that film (inside the teseract) is explained in detail through Cooper's voice. Snyder mainly uses the image to send the message.The "problem" is the image has to be interpreted by oneself while descriptive dialogues interpret for you.
        At least Nolan had as an excuse that some of their stories contain some conceptual complexity, other directors however have no excuse of this kind. In Marvel films we see that the characters speak a lot explaining with words to the public what they do, what they did and why they did it, what they feel,... describing everything that the camera and the staging is in most cases incapable of describing because it lacks cinematographic resources. The scenes are, in many cases, visually flat. Scenes, for example, in which the camera moves without any reason just to give them a decorative dynamism and so people do not get bored too much while the characters explain themselves over and over again until the time comes for pyrotechnics.

        They say "Ohh" because the on an aesthetic and visceral level it resonates but they jusy dont understand it yet. Its like an American hearing French for the first time, at face value its neat because its something foreign, but "dumb" because we dont understand it.
        This speaks to a broader issue of lack of art education and art appreciation being taught in school. No trying to sound pretentious but I'm being genuine in saying this. When the spanish came to Mexico, do you know they burned tons of the Mayan text because they thought it was just pictures of "evil & demonic" images of bats, snakes and insects? These are people who built pyrimids and invented the modern calender.
        My point is just because it may be off putting or not to you immediate liking don't dismiss things so passively, especially when there is a segment of people telling you there is validity to it.

After the script for MoS was one of it's most criticized aspects, and after they hired Terrio to rewrite BvS's script and letting Goyer go for future JL installments, they do this fucking magic trick... GG, WB... Good one for hiring the hack responsible for Ghost Rider 2's laughable script, the mess that Blade Trinity was, and for his only good work being The Dark Knight trilogy, of which he was merely an idea man...

  You can have whatever opinion you want, but the truth is that one of the most criticized aspects of MoS, either by fans or critics, was the poor script. Dialogue was cringe worthy at times ("Now if we're done measuring dicks" - by Lois Lane to an army general after meeting him for 2 seconds), and was nothing special. Had a well executed villain and that's it.
  And if you are only talking about the general story, then give credit to Nolan, since he is the one who came up with it, and why it probably was so reminiscent of Batman Begins...
  Either way, Goyer is an absolute cancer in almost any project he works. If he's writing it, then it almost always turns out crap, divisive or mediocre. I think standards should be a little higher than "mediocre", but I guess guys like you keep telling themselves BvS was a masterpiece, so I shouldn't even bother...

  Yes, it did! I really got excited until halfway past the movie. It's immediately after they acquire their powers and Reed escapes that I could just feel the director disappearing. It was such a tragedy, man.

I think the biggest mistakes the 2011 movie made were: Hector Hammond looked like a greasy creep, Parallax should never have existed in the first place, Hal shouldn't be a jackass, and the CGI capabilities weren't nearly what they needed to be so the space stuff looked lame.

Oh god please don't provoke Tyrese, Chris! I genuinely would hate it it if he was cast as Stewart. He just does not have the acting chops. Also, does this news give us a hint that Armie Hammer might be involved with GLC? I think he's involved with The Batman but his recently heavily rumored casting in DC Films, paired along with this news might give us a clue.

He is good with story. He just needs work on the dialogue. He did create the TV series Constantine; now producing the CW Seed version of Constantine and will produce the Man of Steel prequel Krypton on Syfy.
