Report: 'Birds of Prey' wants to cast a biracial actress to play Black Canary

August 11, 2018

Last month Birds of Prey star and producer Margot Robbie said that the movie would have a diverse cast, and now some new casting details have emerged that back up that claim.

According to Heroic Holloywood, Warner Bros. is looking to cast a biracial actress to play Black Canary in Birds of Prey. This wouldn't be the first time Black Canary would be portrayed by a biracial actress either. Juliana Harkavy, who plays the character on the TV show Arrow, is of Dominican, Russian, African, Chinese, and Hungarian descent.

Heroic Hollywood goes on to say that Warner Bros. wants a Black Canary actress who has the ability to sing. This may explain why we just learned that Lady Gaga was offered a role in Birds of Prey, but she decided to turn it down.

In addition to Harley Quinn and Black Canary, Birds of Prey will feature Huntress, Cassandra Cain, Renee Montoya. Black Mask will be the villain in the movie.

Given this new information, who would you like to see play Black Canary in Birds of Prey? Let me know in the comments below.

Give a white role to a black person and its diversity and should be accepted and praised, give a non-white role to a white person and we are nazis.

Because non-white/black roles and characters races tend to be blended into their characters. For instance, if you make T'Challa white, it changes the entire structure and thematic power behind his story.
If you make Dinah Asian or Black, literally nothing about her story is changed.

Nick Fury is a race-bended character and Falcon/War Machine race plays into their character in a very stereotypical and negative fashion (being token black side-kicks for the white hero).

Nick Fury was white till he was inspired after Samuel Jackson so piss off with that crap and no their race has absolutely nothing to do with their character. You are literally being a hypocrite right now.

If you go back and read Ultimate Avengers from early 2000's there's a scene where the Avengers is talking about who should play them in the movies and Fury actually says Jackson. Sam Jackson has even talked about that comic prior to being cast that one day he picked up a comic and he saw that he was in it, they never actually asked him for his likeness but him being so damn awesome never actually took offense to it and seemed to enjoy that they did.

I love that he's a sport about all of this stuff. He even picked his own lightsaber color, and it was the only saber to not be the standard R/B/G at the time. haha
I still remember seeing Fury in Ultimate Spider-Man back when that first came out and wishing for a movie with Sam Jackson in the part. Amazing how dreams can sometimes come true. lol
Another (unrelated) one came true for me the other day: Simon Belmont is finally in Smash Bros. :)

Hey, not saying Sam L as Nick Fury isn't a great choice. My og point was that a lot of black/poc character's race is directly tied to their characters, in either a negative or positive manner.

That argument is retarded. Race only matters to these minority characters because people like YOU say it matters.
Why can't T'Challa be white? Because he's born in a (FICTIONAL) African nation? Okay, there are no white people in Africa? With that logic, Idris Elba should never be Bond because Bond is British.
Is it perhaps because his father is black? Okay, can't his father have been in love with a white woman? No??
Or maybe it has something to do with white people not being able to be in power in black nations... not unlike a black president in a white nation, because that has never happened before... Ooops...
I'm not saying T"Challa should be white, but from a principled standpoint, his race has fuck all to do with who he is or what he stands for.
Also, Fury's, Falcon's and Rody's race also have NOTHING to do with their character.
What about Cyborg? A perfect example of a character whose race could be whatever and it wouldn't matter one fucking bit. Now, are you really going to tell me you wouldn't whine like a baby if they would cast a white person to play Cyborg? No???
Seems to me you're just another "it's only wrong if they are white" kind of guy.

How are you able to not understand this? T'Challa's character is tied to his race and his role as an African/Wakandan King. That is not the same argument as Idris Elba not being Bond. Because T'Challa and the way his character is handled is unapologetically black, changing him into a white man confuses the entire narrative surrounding him.
I already mentioned why Falcon and Warmachine's characters are tied to race.
You're right that Cy's race doesn't matter, but that's still a horrible argument to have. For decades, poc have been subjected to having roles taken from them by white washed characters and posing actors. Why take the opportunity away from a black actor to prop up 1 out of a million whites?
And what the hell is that black president in a white nation speel? America =/= white lmao

        No it isn't.
There is no such thing as "unapologetically black", honestly, that is just pure racism on your part. There isn't one argument you can make as to why T'Challa "should" be black, and Bond "shouldn't" be white.
"You're right that Cy's race doesn't matter, but that's still a horrible argument to have"
See? So you're just a hypocrite who seeks any excuse why it's okay when blacks do it, but when whites do it, that is an outrage. Also, what you're saying about them being oppressed for "decades" is factual nonsense.
And yes, the US is a white nation.

And maybe it's just me but if you make Black Canary a Black woman that's kinda racist. That's like making all the yellow lanterns Asian people.

Onyx. Huntress. Cassandra Cain. Renee Montoya. Katana. Gipsy. Vixen. Strix. All of these characters (who all have been part of the Birds of Prey btw) would be great choices if they want more diversity/representation in the movies. So WHY the need to change an already well established character's race without reason, specially when their look is so iconic? I just don't get it.

birds of prey has ALWAYS been barbara's team, and it worked as a book because of the dynamic between babs and black canary
you can obviously sub out whomever you like in an adaptation but it's still kind of shitty to write out oracle altogether. cass was a batgirl so it's not even about that character really

eh. Like I said, they dont have to resemble the comics completely. Do we still know for sure if this movie is actually called Birds of Prey? Because im still getting the impression that its Birds of Prey "inspired" but not necessarily actually Birds of Prey. Idk. We'll see. Either way it doesnt ruin it for me. I guess i just dont take offence to this because im not really a huge Barbara Gordon fan. She's okay. Cass is my favorite though. The only time I really enjoyed Barbara as Batgirl was in Gail SImone's new 52 run which was cut way too short in favor of some weird nonsense.

I'm not a huge fan of Babs as Batgirl either, but I've always liked Oracle as a character (I thought she worked really well as an older, more established mentor and tactician)
I think I can still enjoy the movie if she's not in it, but it would be kind of weird, like leaving one of the Trinity out of a Justice League movie

Barbara started the BoP in the comics so she is THAT important to BoP. There would be no BoP without her. Also, Harley and Catwoman have never been in BoP, but Ivy has. Ivy could be in this and it still be true to the comics, but she's not in it because they don't care one bit about being true to the comics. They only care about what Margot Robbie wants this movie to be.

Catwoman did something with them in the rebirth comics im pretty sure. So again i dont see why its far fetched to think Harley could be associated with them in some shape or form.
Obviously they are staying true to the comics to an extent. Barbara just isnt it but you still have Black Canary and Huntress so im not sure i follow your logic. Margot was pitching this idea to the studio for a long time before they reached an agreement so its not as if they just said yes immediately without giving it any thought. Calm down. As for Barbara, I imagine the reason she isn't in this because its supposed to be R rated. And it can be more or less simply "inspired" by Birds of Prey

Is it iconic? To the general audience Canary is an unknown and the people who do know her are Arrow viewers who think of Katie Cassidy's awful take.

I usually think of the JL cartoons, personally. Most other fans I'm friends with do too. That, and Alex Ross' art.
Lately I've enjoyed her a lot in what I've read of the early parts of GA Rebirth.

Of course. I was mostly just chiming in my POV because I think the iconography starts with the fans.
The heart of the character is here with us, and the rest of the world should see that heart when the character finally gets a big-screen adaptation.

Arrow is pretty well known, but regardless, can’t characters’ appearances become iconic to the characters, even if they might not be as popular as Superman? I would say Black Canary’s blonde hair with black costume is central to her look and a staple of the character’s history that shouldn’t be infringed.

Sure its iconic to readers but your general audience who make up most of the money and viewers would only know her from Arrow and only if they watch it.

I knew this movie would be nothing less of a Suicide Squad debacle when Harley was announced to be in it. And she's not even playing the villain which makes me wonder why Harley even needs to be in the Birds of Prey. Roman Sionis aka the Black Mask is the villain and I'm guessing poor Roman is gonna be dominated by these women to show female empowerment over men and what not, I wouldn't be surprised if that happens. Personally, I'd prefer if Ivy was the antagonist since she's gone up against the Birds of Prey and even been part of their team temporarily. As for Black Canary being biracial, her biracial actress is just gonna be another example of race bended forced diversity. Why can't Hollywood adapt characters like they are in the comics instead of all this nonsense SJW propaganda involved? I mean come on, I've seen cosplayers dress up and look more accurately to comic characters than these miscasted race bended characters like Domino in DP2, hooker Starfire in Titans, etc.

It's not even that I have a problem with BC being "biracial" or whatever, just that they are specifically looking for people of a certain race and excluding others

        Yes, it's the first film.
The reason I said barely, is because films like L'arrivée du train feature no actual "strong characters" male or female. Feature, cinematic films only become an actual thing until much later. Some would argue during the 20s 30s and 40s, right when audio was invented as well. That's why I said barely, because the types of films that resemble those of today haven't been around for 100 years. End of story.

        "Yes, it's the first film."
A simple google would show that it's not.
"The reason I said barely, is because films like L'arrivée du train feature no actual "strong characters" male or female. Feature, cinematic films only become an actual thing until much later."
Your claim was that films have barely been around that long. That claim is false. That's all I was discussing. I don't care about the rest of the conversation which you clearly have forgotten. Just to remind you, It wasn't about strong characters of any gender at all. It was about people getting excluded from job opportunities because of race. He was clearly exaggerating and you decided to focus on the minutia of his argument instead of actually disproving his claims. So now I'm doing it to you. You're welcome.
"Some would argue during the 20s 30s and 40s, right when audio was invented as well. That's why I said barely, because the types of films that resemble those of today haven't been around for 100 years. End of story." This is some hardcore backtracking. If you were truly talking about 20's through 40's you wouldn't even have brought up the Lumiere Brothers. Also, that's still not what barely means. A synonym is hardly. It means not at all. Barely 100 years would not be 80 or 70 years.
I just realized you are the same guy from the other post. That's rather funny. I'm not sure how I missed that.

"Your claim was that films have barely been around that long. That claim is false"
No it wasn't. If you're 18 for example, a parent can say "you're barely 18 and you're already doing X". It's a figure of speech, fool.
Also, I said it with the implication that films as we know them today have not even been around for 100 years. So if you really want to get technical, it's still a valid claim.
"Just to remind you, It wasn't about strong characters of any gender at all. It was about people getting excluded from job opportunities because of race."
Umm, it's the same thing. Hollywood movies weren't about "representing people" back in the 20s, male, female or minority. Also, the US was 90% white until the 50s, so it's hardly surprising.
"It was about people getting excluded from job opportunities because of race"
Yes, a claim you've justified based on no actual good reasons... and also, you failing to refute my arguments.
"He was clearly exaggerating and you decided to focus on the minutia of his argument instead of actually disproving his claims"
Bitch please... his argument was that Hollywood have been actively discriminating minorities for a 100 years. An argument he didn't even prove in the first place. Of course you overlook that fact.
"So now I'm doing it to you. You're welcome"
Ahh I see.. you're just looking for reasons to justify your blatant hypocrisy.
        "This is some hardcore backtracking"
No it isn't, because that statement is a figure of speech which is 100% correct in that context anyway. Honestly, at this point you're just whining like a little bitch for the sake of it, because you know you don't have an argument.
"If you were truly talking about 20's through 40's you wouldn't even have brought up the Lumiere Brothers"
I brought it up because you were wrong.

At one point I was very much looking forward to this film. However the more that comes out about it and the majority of it being either about race or something PC frankly just makes me more and more anxious about this project. Seems they're focusing on some forced diversity quota more than actually getting a solid movie down and casting based on merit. I'm afraid this could turn into an Oceans 8 situation in that everything is so political about it that it instead turns audiences off and barely anyone goes to see it. If they're not careful attitudes towards this movie could turn very negative quickly. We'll see how it all plays out I guess. I'm optimistic.

Ocean's 8 did alright financially, with over 275 mill at the box-office. Nothing really political or deep about it. It was just about watching an ensemble of well-known actresses, interact with each other and steal sh!t. Fun movie.
I agree with most of the concern from fans about this report. Black Canary/Dinah Laurel Lance, has a very distinct look in the comics. Casting a beautiful blonde actress who fits the role, should be the goal with casting that character. Not checking off a category on a diversity list.

275 million on a 70+ million production budget without marketing, theatre cuts, tax etc... isn't great. WB probably just about broke even on it. It was also the lowest grossing of the Ocean's franchise. Sorry my dude, if you are whole heartedly saying that there was nothing political about that film, there's no saving you. It didn't need to be political but the cast on the promotional circuit made it political. Some of the stuff they came out with especially after release when the movie wasn't doing well critically or financially was appalling.
Anyway, as I said, we shall need to wait and see how everything plays out closer to the release of Birds of Prey. Don't be surprised if this film continues pushing a social narrative rather than artistic and it then shows in box office returns and fan backlash. This is all coming from a MAJOR DCEU fan.

It didn't do well enough for them to realistically turn any kind of worth while profit. That's definitely a factor as to why we haven't heard even a whisper about a sequel. That likely won't happen. If it does it will involve some of the original male cast coming back.

I'm a massive film fan and box office stuff really interests me and the money that film made would have been worth it for WB. Again the general rule is a film needs to make back 3 times its budget to be a success and the film done that and more, is it a huge success? No but it made enough to justify its presence even if it most likely won't get a sequel.
If anyone is triggered by the way its you and going by other comments i've seen you make on here that really doesn't surprise me. End of the day i would rather take the word of people who actually know what they are talking about and actually get to speak with the film industry over some random nobody on Batman News who will most likely never get the type of film access that a site like Forbes can get. Hey though if you know a site bigger and better then Forbes what heavily report box office news then please tell me.

rule of thumb is a movie needs 2.5 times it's production budget to break even and Oceans 8 grossed 4 times, so i would say they earned pretty good margin on this film.
Budget of BOP is said to be close to 40-50m and let me be bold enough to predict that it will destroy Oceans 8's number no matter how many people are turned off it due to PC (it's more of internet nerd bubble because i don't think general audience care, more diverse it is more will be it's reach). Diversity is one of the reason which made suicide squad such a big hit despite being poor movie.

It never grossed 4 times it’s budget. Every film is different. There are different expenses at then end of a theatrical run. With a cast like oceans 8 had, there’s no doubt there was a back end deal in the contract which would also have ate into the already mediocre box office returns. That along with most expenses movies have, I just can’t see how that movie made any kind of worthwhile profit. Hence why there’s absolutely no word on a sequel. Still don’t think it’ll happen.
I don’t think there’s really ever been a case that a more diverse film means more success, money or reach. “A Wrinkle in Time” was the most diverse film in years and it utterly flopped. That had a Disney trademark on it. “The Dark Tower” was race changed for Idris Elba and it flopped. “The darkest Minds” which came out a week or so ago is doing horrible business. Those are just a few from recent memory. I’m sure there’s more. As strange as it sounds, a less diverse movie across the board seems to be a lot more commercially successful. I’d argue that suicide Squad was successful despite poor reviews because general audiences were curious about a new portrayal of the joker and to an extent Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Batman was also pushed in the marketing which definetily sparked an interest that he would appear in the same movie as the joker. After the release I don’t think I heard or saw anybody mention it’s diversity as a strong factor at all. I think it ultimately came down to Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Ben Affleck as Batman. Hey, that’s just my opinion however. You clearly have a different take which is also fine.

lmao biggest box office flops of last year were movies with white male lead in it and Solo is the biggest bomb of this year and how the hell was A Wrinkle in Time most diverse film in years when SS and rogue one came barely 1.5 years ago.
40% of SS's viewership was african american & latino and WOM was most favourable in this demographic and are we going to pretend that Will Smith was not one of the reason for SS being hit.
Oceans 8 wasn't a blow out success to warrant a sequel but it had decent run and i don't think studio will be cursing themselves for green lighting it

Oh I forgot some movies with white leads are never aloud to underperform. damn it! First, SOLO bombed because it wasn't a good movie, no one wanted a Han Solo film without Harrison Ford, The Last Jedi was utter garbage and left a bad taste in peoples mouth, SOLO was released far too soon after the reception of TLJ etc. There are many other factors. The list could go on.
You're right. Will Smith has a somewhat built in loyal fanbase that will go and see anything he does. However, I would argue you could've removed him completely and left Deadshot as comic accurate and the end results wouldn't really change at all. It would've still made roughly the same amount of money.
Lets be realistic, the movie industry relies on movies with white leads. That's were the majority of the money comes from. All you need to do is look at the worldwide totals every year. I'm sorry to burst your bubble but people ain't showing up to the majority of movies with minority female/male leads. There are exceptions of course. Black Panther being one of them. However that had the Marvel logo attached so it was always going to do at the very least decently well. If you look at the grosses at the end of every year, minority led projects are almost always at the far lower end of the box office returns. Either they make decent money, underperform or just completely bomb. It isn't just a coincidence that there aren't many movies in Hollywood being announced with lets say a black lead. It's because it's too much of a risk. Especially for big budget major releases. That's just a harsh reality. Peace out my dude.

Batman knows and has mastered every martial arts and fighting skill in the world, he's one of the worlds most dangerous fighters with only a few others above him like Shiva (the greatest fighter), Cassandra Cain, Bronze Tiger, and Richard Dragon. Canary is great but she's no where near those levels or even Bruce's.

Even then she was no near the levels of someone like Bronze Tiger who can and has taking out Bruce with ease, Shiva for the most part has always been the greatest and most dangerous fighter on the planet though, she's someone Bruce would actively avoid trying to fight because she would kill him and or put him down for quite a while, he actually sort her out for training after his back was broken because she's that good. Canary would be dead before she even got a chance to scream with Shiva or Cass, some would argue Richard Dragon is the greatest as well and again Dinah wouldn't stand a chance with him. Honestly even Deathstroke is above even without his enhancements, he's another one who Bats struggles with and has lost at times with. Ultimately Bruce is above Dinah so anything above him would destroy her, i would she's a high tier fighter but on the lower end of it.

Deathstroke is not anywhere close the fighter that Bruce is though. Sure, Bruce can't take him down solo, but that has less to do with martial art skill, more so than DS's superior strength, speed and stamina.
Honestly, I think DS's fighting skill has always been vastly overrated... strip him of his enhancements, and Bruce destroys him blindfolded with his two hands tied behind his back.

I don't know Deathstroke has proving even when without his metahuman stuff he's more then a match for Bruce. Honestly i would say they are equal for the most depending on whose writing them, both have defeated each other and both are weary of each other. Deathstroke has recently noted that the only reason Batman is still out there is because he allows it and also noted that Batman has never really gone after him despite the fact he is is out there murdering people. Deathstroke is one of the rare few who Bruce is weary off and would avoid fighting if possible.

I done know of a single comic where DS' ability is said to equal Bruce's. In fact, I'm pretty sure DS admitted that Bruce is the better fighter. I believe it was Judas Contract, though I could be wrong.
Again, the only reason DS is in any position to "allow" Batman to still be alive, is because of his enhancements. The fact of the matter is, DS hasn't trained anywhere near as much or as hard as Bruce has, throughout the years. Bruce is said to have mastered pretty much all (or most at least) martial arts known to man. DS hasn't. He's a great fighter, but he's never been considered one of the best and the only reason he stands up there is because he has a massive physical edge.
Look at it this way, if DS was equal to Bruce without enhancements, then there is no possible way Bruce could ever win. Now, I've told you I stopped reading comics after N52, but I do remember they had a fight, be it a short one, I don't remember which comic or when, I believe it was a Harley Quinn related issue, though I'm not sure. I'm also not sure who won that fight, but I think it was Batman, and he pretty much mopped the floor with him. That would never happen if DS was equally skilled + physically stronger. Though it has to be said, the writer was most likely a Batman fanboy exaggerating his chances against DS.

The socialist explicitly saying it's okay to discriminate white people suddenly has a problem when it comes to changing the race of fictional characters he holds dear. How ironic.

Is that the best you got? That statement doesn't even apply to me, because JP is a religious apologist, and I hate that about him. In fact there are many things I don't like about him, so no... just because I cite a video in which PRINCIPLED arguments are made, doesn't mean I'm a fanboy.
Also, a massive lol for you to evade the accusation and reply with something completely meaningless. Not surprised, because after that last conversation, when I prove you objectively wrong, the best thing you could do is respond with trolling.

Looool... I have been saying these things for years, and making principled arguments like equality of opportunity =/= equality of outcome isn't "paraphrasing other people". It's a well known argument that you hilariously failed to refute.

Nobody cooler than Tessa Thompson. If you’re picturing an incompetent hire to placate the PC police, that’s on you, not this movie.

It’ll be somebody different. But if they’d announced they were looking for a biracial actress to play Valkyrie, some people would have thrown up their hands and said there go the PC snowflakes again, ruining another movie. But they found somebody awesome. So will Birds of Prey.

I'm getting sooo fed up with these liberals pushing their agendas down everyone's throats! Cant we just keep the characters the way they were originally conceived without changing their race, gender or gaying them up? Disgusting

It's odd to me that they don't just juice up the existing non-white, non-straight, or non-male characters and give them good stories to make them more popular.
Instead of race-washing existing white characters, why not just give us a new Blade movie? Why not a Storm movie? What's taken Spawn so long? Why not use the Katana we had in SS for BoP? It's not like people wouldn't go see those; Black Panther did very well.
Static Shock and the John Stewart Green Lantern also have cult followings that are ripe for taking advantage of - as does Ray Fisher's Cyborg. Vixen has recently become more popular as well.
Or, hell, make new characters and make them well. There are so many knock-offs, tokens, and plastic pandering attempts that it's embarrassing.
For the record, I'm also not into white-washing. Just let the characters be the characters and stop bending them for political brownie point marketing. There are very few times it actually works and feels organic.

Changing the race doesn't bother me its more the reasons why, if they found someone who wasn't white but was near perfect in the role i wouldn't care its more that they would turn down a perfect white actress for the role just so they can push an agenda.

Biracial sells like hot cakes now in hollyweird....so I am not surprised by this. Hopefully they get someone talented as well, which I am sure there are a lot that have been past up because they did not fit a certain look standard in the past, so in a way this is good.

And what is the problem with this? Do you have problems with white people? this sounds racist to me. But I understand. Today is already normal people in universities in USA to preach the white race genocide like its the more nouble thing to do, for a better world. Do you want black people in movies? write movies with black characters man. But is more easy to complain about "representativity" than to move your ass from the chair. there are plenty of very talented black actors in hollywood but they seems to be more interested in play an agenda than play originaly created black characters. do you remember of the movie gods of egipt? why black people can complain about that movie and nordic people cannot complain about marvel Thor Heimdall or Valkyre? because their are racist? racism is racism

Did I say that? read again, if you can at least! What I realy said was that "racism" agains white people is normal and nouble, but against black people its a crime. understand? and this kind of ideas is very expressed in the media and the entertainment industry today. it's normal to say things like "white washed" to movies like gods of egipt, but in marvel movies put a "different color" actor to play a character it's just diversity, it dosn't matter if you are hurting some peoples culture (nordic people), they are in debt, they cannot feel misrepresented.

No, it's not a matter of belief. It's a matter of fact.
If it's okay to "blackwash" but not okay to "whitewash", then that is a double standard. And a double standard is treating things or people differently. And when it comes to race, treating people differently based on race, is racism BY DEFINITION.

No you're not. That's what you tell yourself because you DON'T have an argument.
It's very simple: if changing the race of an originally black character is wrong, then it should also be wrong to change the race of an originally white character.
Either that, or you don't care either way, like me. I don't think it matters, cast anyone you want (so long as it's not political of course). But don't pick and choice when it's politically convenient. Don't say "it's only fine when THEY do it". That is hypocrisy of the highest order. That is a complete lack of standards, or in other words, you don't have fair principles.
You trying to excuse it through some mental gymnastics, identitarian social justice rhetoric proves fuck all, nor does an ambiguous, sarcastic TWEET.

You actually didn't. You just said the context doesn't matter. It does. That's basic critical thinking. One practice is seen as racist while the other isn't for a laundry list reasons, many of them statistical and historical. Changing a non-white character into a white one is viewed as an offensive PR blunder because Hollywood consistently does poorly with non-white characters (and more specifically, roles for non-white actors) in the first place, while the reverse does the exact opposite. It's fairly easy to see why one is viewed better than the other.
        >And yes, I don't care, I've explicitly stated that repeatedly whenever nonsense like this comes out. In fact, I've said exactly that in this very comment section.

Yes I did. The thing about PRINCIPLES, is context doesn't matter.
"One practice is seen as racist while the other isn't for a laundry list reasons"
This is in and of itself, racist. You cannot possibly claim to be against racism and treat people equally, and then treat people unequally by virtue of their race. This is hypocrisy. It's a double standard.
Also, even your "contextual reasons" are factually wrong. The fact of the matter is, black people are NOT underrepresented in film.
        https://www.pbs.org/newshou...
The only people that are "underrepresented", are Hispanics and even then it's important to realize that Hispanics are often considered "white" (because frankly, the difference isn't very big or noticeable).
Nor is it the case that blacks don't get "the best roles", as around 12-13% of Academy award nominations go to black people, which corresponds exactly to their US demographic: 13%.
        https://thehornnews.com/exc...
Also, even IF blacks were underrepresented in Academy nominations, that wouldn't prove anything, because skill is the deciding factor, not race. Is it racist that the majority of the fastest people on Earth are black? No, similarly, if white people happen to have the majority of nominations, that isn't necessarily proof of discrimination.
So what about behind the camera? Again, no proof of discrimination.
        https://www.americanthinker...
According to the Directors Guild of America, out of all the TV episodes shot in the 2012-2013 season:
        - 72% were directed by white men
        - 12% were directed by white women
        - 14% were directed by minority men
        - 2% were directed by minority women
Despite the fact that out of all the directors (7464 in total),
        - 5824 are white men (78% of the whole)
        - 994 are white women (13%)
        - 516 are minority men (7%)
        - 130 are minority women (1.7%)
Meaning, proportionate to their numbers in the industry, WHITE MEN are the LEAST likely to get the job... followed by white women... then minority women and lastly minority men.
In fact, only white people (mostly men) are underrepresented per capita, here. Just so you know.
So absolutely not... You are pretending like blacks never get an opportunity, and it's always white men getting everything, and whitewashing happens a billion times more than blackwashing, and blacks almost never get jobs in front or behind the camera... and you use all of these made up things to justify blackwashing and use them as reasons why it's okay to change white characters, stemming from some warped sense of social justice (more like revenge). But the thing is, NONE OF THIS is true. Your beloved """context""" would argue that blacks and whites should be treated just the same in this industry, in this day and age. So you have no argument. And even IF the above fantasies were true, and they aren't, that still wouldn't change the fact that AA is by definition, racism and discrimination. Just because you DEEM it to be positive or "in the name of progress", doesn't actually change the fact that it is discrimination.
"Changing a non-white character into a white one is viewed as an offensive PR blunder because Hollywood consistently does poorly with non-white characters (and more specifically, roles for non-white actors) in the first place"
And what is your evidence to suggest that is the case? I've just proved to you this doesn't at all reflect reality.
"while the reverse does the exact opposite. It's fairly easy to see why one is viewed better than the other"
Even IF that were the case, it is STILL a double standard. What you are saying, if true, would never apply to all characters, so some white ones would get unfairly treated. Am I supposed to ignore individual discrimination because "in the larger scheme of things, it is insignificant"?
People have a name for that: collectivism. And collectivism only breads death and misery, not justice. That is not my opinion, it's a fact and I have the 20th century to prove it.
"These are definitely the actions of someone who doesn't care"
Yes, as I said, I don't care about WHAT they are doing. It's the WHY that bothers me and yes, I care about that.

Not an argument. Also, it's not about being put into camps of different people, thought obviously you love putting people into different groups. It's about the ARGUMENT. The PRINCIPLE.
Counter it with argument, or just say nothing at all.
"I'm laughing my ass off that the point you somehow took away from that article"
I'm just reading statistics. Blacks are 13% of the population and are 13% of movie roles. I don't see a problem, the rest of the article doesn't concern me one bit. Again you respond with something meaningless and fail to present any facts or arguments of your own.
        "You actually didn't, lol"
I guess that's why you didn't address A SINGLE statistic I cited? I'm sure if you'd actually have a decent argument, you'd mention it.

If an atheist proves the Earth is older than 6000 years, and the Christian refuses to believe it and didn't change his or her mind, that doesn't change the fact that the atheist is factually correct and the Christian is factually wrong.

"Screaming "It doesn't matter the context, fair is fair!!!!" didn't prove anything"
It does, especially when your "contextual reasons" are not actually based in reality and I PROVED that.
I don't give a flying fuck what the article was about. I care about the statistics it cited, not the conclusion made by its ideologically motivated writer.
If whites make up 65 to 80% of the population (depending on whether Hispanics are considered white) and blacks make up 13% and whites make up 70 to 80% of movie roles (again, depending on whether Hispanics are included) and blacks 13%, then I don't see a problem with supposed "black underrepresentation". That's just a fact.
"That's because they weren't refutations. You haven't refuted anything I've argued thus far"

You need to prove that first, before I should disprove it.
Or do you think you're allowed to make claims without evidence, and it is always your opponent's responsibility no matter what, to disprove it?
Again, like the good little Christian boy, you think it's fine to say to the atheist: "you need to DISPROVE the existence of God", failing to realize he hasn't proved the existence of God, let alone A god, in the first place.

I never said that. I want you to prove it exists TODAY on such a scale that it still negatively affects blacks. And if it does, I need you to prove it is significantly enough, and you also need to explain why, if racism is so fucking rampant, statistically, blacks seem to be doing JUST AS good as white people are, and in fact, behind the camera, they are doing BETTER.
Of course individual racist piece of shits exist and we need to battle it. But just saying "racism exists" doesn't prove or fight anything. It doesn't change anything. Show me an institution or system that's racist. Prove that blacks are unfairly held back in Hollywood to this day. Prove they have less opportunities than whites. THEN I will listen. You haven't done ANY of that.
You've just said "history... and... slavery... and oppression... and slavery... and yeah, blacks are oppressed... because history... and this country. BOOM! CASE PROVED! WHITE PRIVILEGE!!! NOW DISPROVE MY ARGUMENT!"
And I did... I showed that blacks are doing just as good as any other race in front of the camera and behind it, black men are statistically doing the best of all.
Then you deny it, because you just say so and think your word is fucking evidence or something. PATHETIC.
No, how about some statistics? How about some peer-reviewed research? How about some credible studies? Then I will listen. Now you haven't presented ANYTHING to prove your claim.
You've just said "AA is fine, because white people oppress blacks". So your argument is, blacks are still oppressed. Fine, PROVE it. Thing is, I've already disproved it, so you've already lost, you're just way too dumb to realize it.

Systemic racism does not exist on a scale that negatively affects black people anymore. A bold stance that many would call stupid, but I have my hat to you, good sir.

Many? More like the minority. Fun fact: blacks in the 90s were less likely to think racism was still a pressing issue than whites. It's only since recent years, with the rise of social justice, that people have started seeing themselves as victims again.
But anyway, I find it endlessly amusing that you STILL refuse to give a shred of evidence, and hold your word as proof of the claim itself. It doesn't work that way, buddy.
YOU are the ones making the claim, it is YOUR responsibility to prove it. The fact that you are unable to, speaks volumes.
And that's the end of it. You can't respond with actual arguments, only sarcasm and contempt. There is no point with you, because again, just like the Christians, you wouldn't know defeat if it stared you directly in the face.
        Have a good day, man.

Hahahaha... Honestly, I know I'm an asshole sometimes but when it comes to fandom and movies, I don't really mean any of it. However, when it comes to beliefs and politics, I'm fine with people having their personal preferences (and I would never dream of censoring anyone), but I absolutely fucking hate when people lack principles. When they have double standards. When they are hypocritical about what applies to who... and when it comes to "identity" (race, gender, etc), that stuff just pisses me off even more. When I'm rude then, I mean it and I believe they deserve it.
Seriously, this guy is constantly telling it's ok when group X does, but not group Y. I loathe that type of thinking, it is inherently unjust on an individual level.
What bothers me EVER more than all of that, is his blatant intellectual dishonesty and I've got no fucking respect for it. If he's going to sit there and deny all the objective data I've presented and pretend like I haven't outright refuted and ridiculed his pathetic excuses for "arguments", that drives me nuts. Why can't these people be honest? Why can't they reflect on their beliefs? Why can't they be critical?
You'll also notice how I REPEATEDLY ask him to give me facts, to make proper arguments, to cite statistics that prove his point and so forth. I do this because I want to be honest and I want to know were they are coming from and if their beliefs have merit. Unsurprisingly, he couldn't even manage to give me but ONE number... and he has to nerve to pretend he's in the right?
Uuughh... I know it's petty and stupid to get worked up over this, but I can't help it. I am sick of people not having proper principles and fair standards that apply to all.

There was definitely a sarcastic and dismissive pattern to the replies, which was disappointing. You tried to lay out the facts in detail and got smirked aside instead of properly addressed. :/
If you reach an impasse with somebody, I feel you should have at least tried to reason it out and address (or concede) counter-arguments by that point, and if it looks like it isn't going anywhere or is getting too heated, it's best to just drop it and move on.

But it's like you said, I did try and I did bother, and he can sarcastically dismiss me all he wants, that's fine. What bothers me is how he genuinely seems to think he made a good case and he was in the right. I don't understand how that happens.

I agree, but I was coming at it from the moral side of things.
People get very upset that we don't have exactly the same number of each race/sexuality/gender in films and TV, but in reality there aren't the same number of anybody anywhere, and the largest percent of the population will always understandably be the largest percent of what you see represented on screen.
It's not immoral; it's just math. Not that I'm against more great diverse superhero characters getting their spotlight, of course, and we have plenty of those to adapt and even create without needing to race-swap anybody.

And what is the problem with this? Do you have problems with white people, this sounds racist to me.

Wait...I just realized...if they hire an actress whose predominately black to play Black Canary...wouldn't that be kind of racist. I mean that's almost like saying a white actress for White Canary, wouldn't that be "labeling" a superhero due to her color, lol. Thats the problem with trying to be all pc, it just opens up to even worse racism.

Marvel created a character that comes from the African jungles, is a black man, and a tribe leader called Black Panther. Like how much more on the nose could Marvel have been? Yet the character is not inherently racist in of himself, mostly because he's a better role model than "Lil Homie".

Wouldn't it be better if they do this with some other character (like Huntress)? Back when Black Lightning was announced, I remember reading some comments, by people that don't know much about comics, complaining about how African-descent superheroes "always" have the "black" modifier in them, because of Black Panther and Black Lightning (and I guess Black Vulcan and Black Goliath). I actually expect some people to complain that having Black Canary be someone with dark complexion is racist, because she was always a blonde. Something stupid like that.

Even my wife (who is biracial) rolls her eyes at this stuff.
The importance placed on skin color to make something superficially relatable is very concerning to me. We shouldn't be teaching our kids that they can't connect with someone unless they have the same skin color, gender, country of origin, sexuality, et cetera.
Some of my biggest idols and favorite characters are other genders/races/whatever, and that never got in my way and really didn't even cross my mind until this topic blew up.
It used to be that people were pretty much in agreement that we shouldn't discriminate; that we should look at each other as all human and find peace and unity. Now there is a wave of segregation sweeping over us again, and it's sadly something that is self-inflicted.

Its the internet and PC generation sadly, nowadays you have to please everyone (except straight white people) and can't say or do anything what might upset someone (except straight white people).
Thing is though we don't help ourselves either. Look at the racist and sexist abuse the actress whose playing Starfire in Titans is getting or the actress who played Rose in Star Wars. End of the day i hate to say it but i suspect the majority of people throwing abuse at them are white and male sadly, then you have people moaning about the Batwoman show because its a lesbian lead even though Kate is a great character who has a fanbase what is a mix of everyone. The problem is rather then show they (i say they rather then we because people like us aren't sexist and racist and attack people on Twitter) aren't a problem they do the thing what gives these groups the ammo they need to attack everyone whose white, straight and male.

"End of the day i hate to say it but i suspect the majority of people throwing abuse at them are white and male sadly"
I'm not sure that is completely the case, but even if it was, they are not complaining because she's Asian and female. It's WHY Rose was cast the way she was. The "what" of the matter is irrelevant. If it had been 1995, these same "white men" wouldn't have batted an eye if Rose was Asian. Unfortunately, now we live in a time where identity politics has infested literally everything. I don't believe for one second that the "white men" who bitch, or even "abuse" (which I really haven't seen at all, tbh), are genuinely racist towards Asians or genuinely sexist towards women... I just think they see her and her character as a manifestation of everything they hate: which is the very ideology that constantly lectures them how they are inherently evil for just having been born. And of course I'm talking about radical leftist, identitarian, intersectional feminist social justice politics.
When you get down to statistics... Women are more likely to hold sexist views (as in, they tend to view lesser of men, than men think of women... and that doesn't surprise me one bit), just like minorities are more likely to abuse, harass, assault or even kill white people than white people are likely to, just like women are also more likely to be abusive online (for example, the majority of slutshaming comes from women, yet they whine when men do it, lel) and ironically, men are more likely to be abused online as well than women. Btw, I'm not arguing that "white men" are better because of these stats. I'm just referencing stats, nothing more.
But it is all these facts, and social justice CONSTANTLY pretending like only straight white men do these things, that cause them to lash out against anyone they deem a SJW, and I'm sorry to say it, but the new SW films and characters like Rose fit that description way too freaking well.

Look for most part i agree but come on you only have to visit a site like IGN and go on an article what has anything to do with someone who isn't male and white to see all the filth in the comments section from people who openly admit to being white and male. Horizon Zero Dawn's review on there last year and the Uncharted game what had Chloe as its lead had tons and tons of sexist and racist shit on there purely because you were playing as a woman or a woman what had a black co lead woman by her side. The type of assholes who post that stuff on there are also the same type who would harass the actress playing Rose in SW on Twitter with horrible names and threats, hell there's this Youtuber who is white and male who didn't like TLJ and Solo so he refereed to as Rose as a "fat asian bitch" and Emila Clarke's character in Solo as a "Cunt" throughout his videos without ever calling them by their names or giving the male characters anything as vile as that.
I agree the "minority" side can be just as bad and are fucking hypocrites but end of the day no one does anything what can paint "white males" as actually ok people and expose some of these more hardcore people as hypocrites and agenda pushes. Basically my view is if you want to look good maybe don't go and harass people on social media so much that they have leave it and consider getting the police involved.

I don't think IGN is a good reference... but even then, whenever I see people complaining about women or poc, it's not about them being women or poc... it's just about how these people feel women and poc are being forced down their throats, because that's the thing that sucks most about entertainment being infested with PC bullshit... people can't even tell when it's actually done for SJW, PC reasons, and when it's just a natural, non-political thing.
Honestly, I just checked the Horizon review, and I couldn't find anything.
The worst I saw was this: "I guess it's acceptable that a woman is the protagonist of an action fantasy game. It is fantasy after all", from a guy named "I am a Stronk Waman", which is clearly just a troll. And tbh, is it sexist? Of course he's joking, but there's some truth to it: in a real life scenario, it would be far more likely that a man would do the kinds of things Aloy does. Not that I care, or think she should have been a dude, just stating the obvious. My point is, if this is the "worst" they have to offer, then I truly couldn't care less.
"The type of assholes who post that stuff on there are also the same type who would harass the actress playing Rose in SW on Twitter with horrible names and threats"
Sure, that's horrible... although personally, I have never and will never take online abuse seriously. That said, I know I'm probably in the minority here, I'm just saying for me, I'd tell anyone who's bothered by it to grow a thicker skin.
That being said, the point is it's wrong for you to say "well, it's more than likely another white man". Perhaps in that single instance, yes. But statistically speaking, they don't do it more than others, in fact men do it LESS. So that's why your argument of "you can't blame SJWs for blaming white men, when white men do this" doesn't hold up. Because overall, that argument just doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
"hell there's this Youtuber who is white and male who didn't like TLJ and Solo so he refereed to as Rose as a "fat asian bitch" and Emila Clarke's character in Solo as a "Cunt" throughout his videos"
So what? He's not allowed to? Not saying it's good behavior, but who cares? The same guy would have probably referred to tons of male characters as "pricks", "idiots", or any other insulting word, yet no one ever bats an eye about that. I know it's far-fetched, but remember when Trump was accused of being a sexist woman-hater because he said Rosie O'Donnell was fat? I was like, what about the billions of men he's slandered and insulted far worse over the years??? Why wasn't he accused of sexism against men then?
You see, I think this hypocrisy is sexist in and of itself. If someone calls a woman a "cunt", that is the end of the world and plain sexism. If the same person calls a man a "prick" or "dick" or whatever else, no one gives a shit. As if "abuse" against men is completely fine.

Just to say all the comments on the Horizon review were reset along with every review and article a few months back when IGN yet again changed their comments system, back on release it had 1000's of comments and a lot of them were pretty vile purely because the lead was a female, some comments were actually people being pissed that Aloy wasn't "attractive" enough for them.
"hell there's this Youtuber who is white and male who didn't like TLJ
and Solo so he refereed to as Rose as a "fat asian bitch" and Emila

The problem is right now SW fans have got a bad name and assholes like that just add fuel to the flames. Insulting the actresses ( because that's what he was doing) isn't a good way to give SW fans a good image especially when people working on SW are attacking fans, we need to show them we aren't these "neckbeard manbabies" and that are faults are legit things and not because they cast an Asian actress as a character what fans didn't like, end of the day the actress done nothing wrong and the character could have been great if she was written better.
Thing is at the moment if someone casts a black or other minority they are suddenly accused of pushing an agenda. Batwoman on this very site was being moaned on because the CW are making a show about her, if this was a Red Hood or Red Robin show they wouldn't have cared its purely because Kate is a woman and an open lesbian. You have it with Legends with Sara, she's openly bisexual and sleeps about with woman a lot, its usually played for laughs and is not a problem yet a certain single takes issue with that even though we all know if this was a man sleeping about they wouldn't care. The show showed that Constantine is bisexual as well and i saw people moan about that even though that's been a big part of his character since his creation.
I get what your saying but at the same time there is a problem on both ends and there's two extreme's fighting each other with people like us caught in the middle.

"The problem is right now SW fans have got a bad name"
Mostly because of SJWs, making the problem bigger than it actually is. It's like Hillary was saying how the Alt-Right was this huge problem, when this group consist of only a few thousands worldwide. They are irrelevant, but the fear-mongering surrounding them isn't small, it's huge and that isn't because of Alt-Rightists, it's because of their enemies exaggerating the problem.
"Thing is at the moment if someone casts a black or other minority they are suddenly accused of pushing an agenda"
Yes, that is because, as I said, the biggest problem with social justice in entertainment, is that it's so fucking prevalent, that it becomes hard to know when they are actually pushing an agenda, and when they aren't and it's just natural.
I also didn't see that many people "moan" about Batwoman specifically because she's a female and a lesbian. Most here just don't care about the character, and state the obvious fact that her casting was political (not to mention the synonpsis, which begs the question, are they really interested in BW because Kate is a good character? Or because she fits the SJ checklist?). That doesn't mean they are sexist against women, or homophobic.
Again, it's WHY they are doing it, not what.
"You have it with Legends with Sara, she's openly bisexual and sleeps about with woman a lot, its usually played for laughs and is not a problem yet a certain single takes issue with that even though we all know if this was a man sleeping about they wouldn't care"
Lol, that is because the CW is notoriously far left and does push a clear social justice agenda... I stopped watching after S2, but how many times did they reference instersectional feminism for example? "Ohh, I thought women could do that in 2017", just bullshit like that, which makes no sense and is easily refuted, but hey according to feminism, women are oppressed and the show needs to comment on it!
There isn't a doubt in my mind that they made Sara a lesbian to yet again, push this "diversity" nonsense. Does it bother me that she's gay? No... not really, again, it's just the why behind it. Seriously, the CW shows tend to dramatically overrepresent these groups. Homosexuals account for 1-3% of the population, yet if I'm watching a CW show, it's more like 20%. I digress, but the point is, people don't complain "because she's lesbian". They complain because it's political and they are right about that.
Just look at Game of Thrones... Have you EVER seen anyone complain about the tons of gays and lesbians in that show? I've never seen it. Why not? Because there isn't a drop of radical leftist politics influencing that show... Well, arguably, in the later seasons when they outran the books, they've started to go a little overboard with Daenerys being this "great female leader" (and the only reason people complain, is because she truly didn't earn it). But even then, this show is proof that people don't give a shit, so long as it's not politically motivated.

I didn't mind Rose. :x I also don't understand why people think Jar Jar 'ruined Star Wars' or 'ruined childhoods' during the prequel days.
They're not the best characters ever, but the overdramatics are excessive, insane, and vicious.

I loved Jar Jar as a kid but i've grown to dislike him more and more, i don't hate him as much as others and can put up with him but i do think he's one of the worse aspects on the prequels. Rose i liked originally but on rewatch i've grown to not like her, i don't blame the actress who done a good job its more that awful scene where she saves Finn what pisses me off, if it wasn't for Luke she would have doomed everyone purely because she had the hots for Finn who would of sacrificed himself what could have saved everyone else or at least giving them time.

    It is crazy to me.
"Treat people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin".
This is an easy to grasp, easy to follow rule. This used to be the golden rule of how to fight any form of discrimination.
Now people are doing exactly the opposite: treating people according to their race and gender and they have the fucking guts to call it "progress".
Just like segregation. It was pretty clear segregation was an evil on this Earth and should be banished for all eternity. Now these stupid snowflakes are asking for segregation all over again, and just as before, they have the nerve to call it "progress".
Honestly, these things disgust me to my very core.

It's not segregation, that's not even anywhere near the same thing, and I mean no disrespect in saying that.
Having more people of color isn't for little kids, mostly little kids are lucky enough to not focus on their differences, even with intrigued by them. It's more so for when they get a bit older, and even then it's a just part of the process to try to show that yes there are people who look different come from a different background and there's nothing wrong with that you can interact and no one will explode.
On the other hand here in this instance it is weird they are saying they want a biracial actress, but it's not the end of the world. No one's saying only biracial people are allowed to enjoy this Black Canary.
If I've offend you in any way sorry that was not my intent.

Dude, you are allowed to offend. It's part of your right to freedom of expression. Don't worry so much what others think of you or how they might perceive your beliefs. If people are offended, that's their problem, not yours.
To your point, I never said forced diversity is the same as segregation. I was making a general point about how institutions and radical people tend to do the very things we fought so hard to destroy, segregation being one of them. For example, there are universities in the US where white men are deliberately put in the back of the room and minority women are put at the front row, with the latter having priority over the former. It's not just Unis or colleges... regular schools do these types of things as well. During certain "sociological" classes, they put people into different camps (divided by race and gender) and tell certain perceived "privileged" groups: you are privileged, you need to shut up and listen to others. I am not making this shit up, you can look this up. This type of SICK and perverted behavior actually happens much more than people care to realize.
Forced diversity is just another symptom of the same disease... that doesn't mean I think forcing diversity is the same as segregation. They are completely different things.
"Having more people of color isn't for little kids, mostly little kids are lucky enough to not focus on their differences"
Exactly... which is precisely the reason why I'm disgusted by people who dare to use kids as a way of getting what they want. "Ohh, THINK OF OUR KIDS!! THEY NEED REPRESENTATION". No they don't. They don't even care. They don't even realize what diversity is. It's not for our kids, it's for weak people desperate to have an identity looking for any excuse to be pandered to.
"It's more so for when they get a bit older, and even then it's a just part of the process to try to show that yes there are people who look different come from a different background and there's nothing wrong with that you can interact and no one will explode"
Dude... You say this as if it's some revolutionary statement. Everyone already knows this. Nobody thinks minority groups can't do certain things by virtue of their race or sexuality. It just doesn't happen.
Reminds me of feminists saying "we need to teach boys not to rape", as if boys don't already fucking know that. Are these people so fucking stupid and naive to believe just saying "don't rape" to boys, that they will magically have a moral epiphany and realize "REALLY? I had NO idea raping people was bad". Who are they kidding with this nonsense?
Similarly, who are you kidding with this "positive representation" crap?
"On the other hand here in this instance it is weird they are saying they want a biracial actress, but it's not the end of the world"
It is bad because it's discrimination. I'm tired of people turning a blind eye just because they pretend to speak on behalf of marginalized groups. That doesn't make it okay.
If you put out a job position and tell people "only white people", I'm sure you would find that more problematic. Am I allowed to say to you: "it's not the end of the world" then? Because guess what? It isn't. In the grander scheme of things, one job isn't going to matter. But that doesn't stop it from being wrong. It doesn't stop it from being discrimination.
"No one's saying only biracial people are allowed to enjoy this Black Canary"
And why would you even say such a thing? That's the last thing people take issue with, dude.

Yea I know I have the right to offend, but I just prefer not to. I really don't get anything out of it and I typically try to treat others they way I'd like to be treated unless they're just an overt ass.
About the crazy school stuff I've never heard of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were that's actually happening. Some people are just really messed up, and forcing people to group up base on race and sex doesn't seem to server any purpose other then to make people feel like they aren't individuals.
Also my comment about people not exploding I was being silly I'm kind of awkward and sometimes even when I'm totally serious I'll through a joke out cause I like to laugh...I'm weird.
I still maintain it's odd they'd make race a requirement for a role, especially if the race isn't inline with what the character is based on. I wouldn't go as far as to call it discrimination. I mean based of what we can put together we can assume Lady Gaga was their first choice but turned it down we don't know that for sure though.

discrimination is usually base on hate though, I doubt this is being done with malicious intent. This is more like a person saying they don't date or find a specif race attractive it's a bit odd, and off putting, but they aren't necessarily discrimination.
I'll concede that this could be discrimination, but I doubt it. It seems more like a misguided decision to try and be more inclusive, or maybe some new rule WB has to feature more minorities.
Also this is something Hollywood has always done more so the other way around, and in some instances I get the idea of we want the actor to look the part. With part of that process being that the casting director may have a picture in his or her head regarding who they want for the role for better or worse.
Another point I'd like to make is that most of these works of fiction especially if you go back to when the first came out most characters are only white, likely in part to discrimination there wasn't many if any comic book writers who were anything but white men. I doubt they created characters with ill intention, it's more of a product of the times and our not so great history.
More often now creative people behind the scenes try to bridge that gap, and I think this is what they are trying to do. It's weird, yes but I doubt there's a hidden agenda to divide. I think they're trying to just make the movie more reflective of today's society.
One major piece of criticism I'll have for Hollywood as a whole is that in the pursuit of diversity they seem to lean more towards hiring Black people, verse any other non white nationality, and I find that odd. Even in the comics that's an issue Most characters are white, or black more recently in the comics they've start to change that though

Honestly, that line of reasoning is worst of all... "Oh, but my intentions are good! I mean well! I don't actually hate white men... I will just hold them collectively responsible for all the sins some of their ancestors may have committed, and will impose a certain collective rule of law that prohibits them from having the same opportunities as others... But YOU GOTTA BELIEVE ME! I am not malicious! I am doing this for PROGRESS"
Also, is it truly not malicious? Where do these policies and quota's even come from? They are justified on the basis that some groups are inherently privileged and oppress the marginalized by virtue of their very being. This very belief is extremely hateful in and of itself. They may not outright say that white people or men are the thing they hate most in this world (though many come worryingly close nonetheless), but that doesn't make it okay. That doesn't change the fact that their entire belief system is rotten and discriminatory, down to its very core.
So no, discrimination has nothing to do with hate. Hate is not the causation, it's a correlation. You can discriminate people and not necessarily "hate" them.
"This is more like a person saying they don't date or find a specif race attractive it's a bit odd, and off putting, but they aren't necessarily discrimination"
Bull fucking shit, man. You can't possibly compare sexual preferences with job applications. The former has all to do with physical appearance, so it's normal to "discriminate" then. The latter is about MERIT. TALENT. SKILL. Things that have fuck all to do with race and gender. I honestly can't believe one would make such an asinine analogy.
"It seems more like a misguided decision to try and be more inclusive, or maybe some new rule WB has to feature more minorities"
Yes of course it is. So it's discrimination. This isn't a matter of opinion. It's a fact. If you don't allow people of a certain race, that is discrimination, period.
"Also this is something Hollywood has always done more so the other way around"
No evidence to suggest that's the case. I deny it. Furthermore, even if that were the case, it wouldn't matter because two wrongs don't make it right. Have some damned principles, mate. I am tired of people using supposed hypocrisy to justify bigotry. "Oh, but HE did it first, so now I'm allowed to treat him like shit as well". Who thinks like that? Children is who.
"and in some instances I get the idea of we want the actor to look the part"
And the part is white... which proves my point.
"With part of that process being that the casting director may have a picture in his or her head regarding who they want for the role for better or worse"
But this particular case isn't like that. I am fine with having a biracial Canary, even though the character is originally white. What I'm not okay with is them excluding white people and deliberately looking for other races just so they can further their bigoted agenda of forcing diversity down our throats.
"Another point I'd like to make is that most of these works of fiction especially if you go back to when the first came out most characters are only white"
And this is a problem, because? Also, comic books have ALWAYS been insanely progressive when it comes to this stuff. Also, most of these characters were created during a time when America was almost 90% white (the late 30s and early 40s). Can you blame them for having 90% white characters? And again, what's the fucking problem with having mostly white characters? Why is that even a thing?
"likely in part to discrimination there wasn't many if any comic book writers who were anything but white men"
What a sexist and racist statement. So this media used to be discriminatory because it was written by only white men, with the implication being that they are inherently racist and sexist... which is ironically a racist and sexist way of thinking.
"I doubt they created characters with ill intention, it's more of a product of the times and our not so great history"
Oh please... If you desperately want more poc in comics, and I have no understanding of why anyone would want that, just as I wouldn't understand why anyone would oppose it, then why don't YOU make NEW characters? Wouldn't that be something?
"More often now creative people behind the scenes try to bridge that gap, and I think this is what they are trying to do"
Throughout this entire comment, you have not once refuted or bothered to address the FACT that their practices are still discrimination. You've only tried to explain WHY they do it. You haven't refuted that what they are doing is actually wrong.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions, remember that.
"It's weird, yes but I doubt there's a hidden agenda to divide"
Dude... it's not about them having "a HiDdEn AgEnDa", it's about them justifying discriminatory practices like affirmative action and quota's, through petty identity politics.
If you want to create a more equal society and steal from the rich to give to the poor, that doesn't change the fact that stealing is WRONG. You may not hate the rich, you may not want to divide, you may want precisely the opposite: to "unite", you may not have a "hidden agenda"... but NONE of that changes the fact that stealing is a crime and it is immoral and wrong. End of story. It is THAT simple.
"I think they're trying to just make the movie more reflective of today's society"
No they're not. They're trying to force diversity, which is meaningless. Also, why SHOULD these movies or shows "reflect" our societies? Why would that matter? Dude, we are talking about a fucking comic book show, yet you demand it be reflective of reality? Is that seriously the priority here?

Yeah but you have to understand there's a lot of concerning shit when it comes to how certain races are portrayed by the news and media. Being colorblind to promote the "we're all human" concept ignores that there are very much disparities in those portrayals (among many other issues). In an idealized world, that would make sense; but we're not there yet, all races and colors are not treated equally enough for us to ignore plights just because we don't personally see or feel them, even being a minority. And at this point any positive display of a minority figure is helpful, and helps fight the ideas we're fed even in 2018, like blacks are criminals, Mexicans are rapists, etc. You'd be surprised at how many someone can feel lifted up and capable when they see someone who resembles them on the big screen or on stage. Now personally, I'm very similar in that I don't need Batman to be a Filipino man like myself to love and relate to the character, but if the race of a character doesn't conflict with the mythos or aesthetic, it only helps people who feel like their race or color is constantly treated like less. And honestly, when some fans react so viciously to a black person playing like an orange or green person, it only seems like they're proving that.

I agree there have been disparities, but I don't think 'any positive display' is necessarily helpful or as positive as it intends to be, and I think what you are saying here demonstrates that. The problem is the way these people think, and what led them there - be it the way they were raised, or the real-life things that create the stereotypes in the first place.
It's not like good examples of other races aren't out there, but this element of society can often ignore those and get caught up in the cynical. Race-washing existing characters won't change that, and will more likely just stir the hornet's nest (as you have seen). Same goes for negatively stereotyping white people.
Moreover, my point is that training kids to think they can only relate
to someone with the same superficial traits as them only pushes them
toward segregation of themselves from other people they could easily be
friends with or relate to. That's destructive, not helpful.
There are only two ways I know of to change those people's minds about negative stereotypes without both of the above types of destructive blowback occurring.
The first is to see the real-world problems causing those conclusions dealt with. People who see these things happening hold onto them because they're serious issues that harm others (or they're just bullies).
The second is to raise our kids (or encourage other adults we know) to be fair critical thinkers and not just go along with any old cynical mob mentality, as well as to treat others as they would want to be treated. Raise them to see others as individuals, and not to associate a person's quality of character with their skin color.

I think the positivity goes away when you pay attention to how the cynical fans react. Black Panther was such a positive thing for younger black kids who are constantly shown that they'll be criminals. No one is telling their kids to not connect with batman or spiderman because they're not black; but it's empowering to see a part of your identity that is stepped on constantly, be celebrated on such a massive scale. I know that's not exactly the same as changing the race of a character, but for younger people especially, not jaded 40-year-olds who are already stuck in their ways, positive role models are good, period.
There's a balance you strike when teaching your kids about superficial traits. On an individual level, sure, that's great to tell them it shouldn't matter and to not let it affect how they treat or see someone. It's what anyone should do as a parent. It shows hope for an idealized world, but they still have to be cognizant of how THEY may be treated because of their color, by society and by people who don't raise their children that way. Your own perception of race won't change that, as much as I wish it would.

"all races and colors are not treated equally enough"
Because of people like you. Take you away, and that statement is completely false.
"And at this point any positive display of a minority figure is helpful, and helps fight the ideas we're fed even in 2018, like blacks are criminals, Mexicans are rapists, etc"
Those "stereotypes" are not influenced by movies. They come from factual statistics. There is no evidence to suggest movies change how people think and behave. This is the "horror movies make psychopaths" or "video games make people violent" all over again.
Tell me, if it were "just" about representing them... then why do men STILL face the immense prejudice of being the "worse" and more aggressive or "criminal" sex? After all, they have more representation and most heroes are male. Couldn't that POSSIBLY have anything to do with men being far more aggressive, and criminals being 95% male in real life? No??? Movies are not going to change that perception. And why should it? Why is it wrong to view blacks as more likely to resort to crime, when that is a fact? Why is it wrong to view Mexicans as more likely to rape, when that is a fact?
Do I like these facts? Of course not. But what you are suggesting is covering up the problem with FICTIONAL stories and hoping the problem goes away.
"And honestly, when some fans react so viciously to a black person playing like an orange or green person, it only seems like they're proving that."
Because it's political. They're not complaining about "what" they are doing, they are complaining "why" they are doing it.

That statement is not false. The unequal treatment (and inequity) is on a largely systemic level, NOT necessarily an individual level. There are stats to prove this. If you're not racist, that's great, but it doesn't make it disappear if you or I stop paying attention. THAT is hoping a problem just goes away.
And I was never suggesting that positive role models in media for a certain race or sex make problems go away because that's really dumb. This is one facet of a massively complicated thing, that I can't pretend I have the answers for. But positive role models are simply good, especially for younger minorities who get those statistics shoved in their face. It's not a cure-all, but there isn't one. Media absolutely sways an individuals perception of themselves, if it doesn't for you, that's great.
Also I don't think you realize that I'm not one of those "PC SJW!!!!" types. I think race pandering can be ridiculous in some cases too. Like making Jimmy Olsen a sexy black guy on SG. So there's no reason to get so worked up.

"The unequal treatment (and inequity) is on a largely systemic level, NOT necessarily an individual level"
There is no such thing as systematic discrimination. Give me a system, institution, give me a law or policy, give me a systematic standard that is discriminatory. Good luck.
"There are stats to prove this"
        No there aren't.
"If you're not racist, that's great, but it doesn't make it disappear if you or I stop paying attention"
No one is saying racism doesn't exist. But racism in practice is illegal. And as for people "thinking" like racists, that is their right (so long as they don't act upon it). You don't have any right to thought police.
"THAT is hoping a problem just goes away"
Or you know, just report it to the authorities instead of discriminating other groups of people and calling it "justice".
"And I was never suggesting that positive role models in media for a certain race or sex make problems go away because that's really dumb"
        Yes you were.
"But positive role models are simply good, especially for younger minorities who get those statistics shoved in their face"
And it needs to be of the same race because???
Also, let's cut the fucking crap... I am tired of the claim that minorities "need" others to show them the way. That certainly hasn't been the case for white people or men, so why are we treating minorities like fucking babies? It's backwards white male supremacy line of thinking.
If blacks don't like the fact that their race commits an obscene amount of crime, why not take responsibility for it, instead of demanding that (mostly white) Hollywood directors need to give them positive representation? How pathetic is that? Btw, blacks already get around as much prominent representation proportionate to their demographic, so I don't know what the problem is.
If these communities are to improve, we need to be honest, instead of minimizing the problem and pretending there isn't something seriously wrong with these communities.
Want blacks to commit less crime? Fine, tell them to finish school, earn a degree and not have children before they have a stable relationship and tell black men not to bail out on their kids the moment they're born. Statistically speaking, these are the biggest factors as to why blacks are falling behind. You're telling me "Black Panther" will show them the way? Who are you kidding? Tough love will show them the way. TELLING IT LIKE IT IS, will show them the way. A fictional superhero will only pander to their prejudiced beliefs, nothing more.
"Also I don't think you realize that I'm not one of those "PC SJW!!!!" types"

Systemic racism. Not systematic. By that alone I can already tell you've never actually heard of it. Google it, and try to read about it without bias, which is probably impossible for a person like you. Simply talking about minorities is clearly triggering the fuck out of you, and seeing that you have a passion to "tell it like it is," I can already sense the type of person you are. I disagree, challenging and being challenged is what debate is all about. Debating people like you is precisely the reason as to why I've honed my arguments rather well over the years. It is useful, as it requires one to self-reflect and think about one's ideas and beliefs. It is also useful for others to read the conversation and make up their minds.
From where I'm standing, you can't be bothered because you lack the conviction and education to defend your beliefs. I'm sorry, but if you start your argument with "there is systemic racism", you are pretty much by proxy in the wrong. And EVEN THEN, what did I do? I didn't dismiss you outright. I challenged you. I asked you to give me examples. I implored you to make your case. Because what is the nr 1 thing to remember? That you may always learn something from your opponent. But the thing is, I've never actually seen anyone make the proper case that there is such a thing as "systemic racism" holding people back to a significant degree. And whenever I ask people to prove their case, they either resort to ideological, sociological bullshit or, like you, cower and leave without bothering because they know they don't have an argument.
        Suit yourself, man.

You like debating with people on the internet, that's cool man. I don't. It's not a meaningful platform for me. I like having my beliefs challenged, and it's made me a better person. I just don't prefer it to be strangers on the internet. So sure, I give up. Feel free to assume I don't have an argument, but I'm not going to type 10 paragraphs of info that you can find anywhere else to try to boost my own ego. You win, enjoy

"I like having my beliefs challenged, and it's made me a better person"
From what I've seen, that's probably the biggest bs claim you've made so far. The "it's the internet" excuse is really weak imo.
And I don't just "assume" you have no argument. I know you don't, or you would have made it.

this is retarded. they are race bending the character. she has a very distinct look and they're changing it for SJW agenda. if they really want characters of color go find a character that is already of color. Kathrine Winnick is still perfect for the role.

No I dont. I know she is a martial artist and a former commando of sorts. Never heard of her having a singers carrier.

I’m getting sick of this multiracial crap! I honestly think that people who get offended if “this film doesn’t have an african american!” or “there’s no asian in that other film!” are just a bunch of idiots. I want my comic book characters as they are in the books! And I’m Latin American

Because it's REALLY a big issue! Bigger than terrorism, starvation or rampant pedophilia! I mean take a look at the porn industry, asian men are so underrepresented! Hollywood's gotta long way to go!

Why isn't anyone complaining that almost all porn made in Japan stars exclusively Asian people? ;p

As you know everybody from the entire globe goes to America, where bleeding heart, privileged liberals give minorities a "chance". So benevolent.
As for the Japs, well, they don't have that mental disease, and they simply only got Japs.

Who's complaining about that? In this instance it's just studio Execs or the Casting directory making this call.

If it’s not a bisexual biracial dwarf then I will stay away from these bigots! If you’re not for diversity then you must be for slavery.

So prediction: there will be another case of online outrage and then the actual audience isn’t gonna give a shit about the character being white in the original.
This always happens, like fans have collective amnesia or something.

What does biracial even means? Why should it be relevant? Why should it be forced upon us?
