Margot Robbie: 'Birds of Prey' will have a diverse cast, Harley will have a new look

Margot Robbie is currently promoting her new movie Terminal, which means we'll be hearing a lot about Birds of Prey as well. Yesterday Robbie revealed that the movie will be R-rated, have a small budget, and begin shooting in January. Now she's talking about some of the casting choices as well as Harley Quinn's look for the movie.

Robbie picked Cathy Yan, an Asian woman, to direct Birds of Prey and Yahoo asked if we'd see diversity on the screen as well. “Yep, yes exactly, real life isn’t so one specific image,” Robbie confirmed. “We’ve got to reflect that onscreen.”

Robbie also confirmed that Harley Quinn will have a "totally different look" in Birds of Prey. Robbie couldn't give any details about her new costumes, which she said haven't been designed yet. "There will be new Halloween costumes out there one day, perhaps," Robbie joked. Harley Quinn was one of the most popular costumes in 2016.

Its nice having a DC film what isn't WW84, Aquaman and Shazam being talked about by people involved and not through rumors. I'm actually really looking forward to this and i'm very happy that Robbie is committed to the role and is doing more then just starring in it.

As for the line up well i'm hoping we have Babs but as Oracle, Cassandra Cain as Batgirl, Black Canary and The Huntress for the Bird's and providing we have the Sirens as well we have Seline and Ivy in the film. Hopefully leave Joker out but put in Gordon in and get Simmons back.

I thought it was confirmed that Babs was going to be the DCEU Batgirl, I found odd considering Cass could've scored them diversity points without alienating source material fans.

  Honestly until a Batgirl film happens (it won't) its safe to say anything is possible right now. I agree Cass could score big diversity points and if anything would go down better with comic book fans as she has a huge fanbase, you could also bring in Shiva as well what again would go down well especially as Shiva is arguably the greatest and most dangerous fighter on the planet, people would love a woman being top dog like that in film.

      I still don't think Batgirl will be in this team up movie. Not in a big role anyway. The heavy hitters will be saved for future instalments if this one is successful. If she is in fact in it, Barbara Gordon herself will be teased with maybe a little nod to Batgirl. If it lands and the audience and fans respond well and are curious about her character, you bet your ass we're going to get a Batgirl movie.

      Batgirl isn't that popular you know, to the casual audience she's less popular then Robin. She isn't a heavy hitter at all and i would be surprised if Batgirl isn't in a Birds of Prey film considering its her team, it would be like doing a JL film without the Trinity. They would most likely use Birds of Prey to see how people respond to the character and if they want more, they aren't going to do a ton of hints and set up like she's fucking Thanos haha. Also no unless she proves popular in BoP film i highly doubt a Batgirl will happen and same goes for Nightwing, right now WB are just chucking ideas and about and we have a ton of rumors about what ever, right now don't expect any film what isn't currently being filmed or is filmed because WB are a reactionary studio when it comes to DC and have no big plan of films firmly in place.

      I'm not saying we will definitely get her movie. Nothing is definite in this buisness. Just saying don't be surprised if it gets officially announced.
      Look, they made a shazam! movie without any sort of indication or really any proven interest from the majority of people that they were wanting this character adapted into live action. Before you know it, his movie was finished filming and coming into theatres next year. It will be a lot of fun.
      If you think they aren't going to capitalise on a character like BATGIRL, someone that could realistically lead her own feature down the line with the possibility of Wonder Woman type returns you are absolutely delusional my friend.

      Thing is Batgirl to the general audience is still either the campy '66 version or the awful version from Batman and Robin. You also got to remember that a lot of the general audience still don't like the idea of BM side kicks, Nolan's Batman proved very popular and the lack of Robin was seen as actual high point with even Bale saying he wouldn't do a film with Robin in it. Batgirl is a great character sure but she still gets groans from people who don't follow comics, i know people who groaned when i said Batwoman (who would be a better choice for a standalone film then Batgirl) is coming to Arrowverse, a lot of people just prefer Batman on his own so suddenly launching a load of standalone films for the Bat Family isn't the best move, however though introducing the characters in other films could win people over like Nightwing in a Batman film and Batgirl in a film where Harley is the main selling point and lead.
      Comparing Batgirl to Wonder Woman is stupid because she isn't anywhere near that level and a Batgirl film won't be making WW money. She's B-Tier character whose main fans are comic book readers and kids who watched Batman cartoons, most people still think of Batman and Robin's version sadly so launching a standalone film for her is risky and WB/DC haven't got the goodwill Marvel has to doing risky films.
      I get your clearly a fan but i don't live in an ideal world where audiences will eat anything you give them and WB will commit to every film they have announced or has been rumored to happen.

      I want it to happen but we know the director has something else lined up and right now i feel WB is just saying yes to everything. Unless its being filmed or is near being filmed i'm not sure on any film happening right now DC wise except for Suicide Squad 2 and The Batman.

      Because WB are saying yes to everything right now, until actual progress happens with Batgirl i have no faith it will happen. Got to remember if AM and Shazam under-perform or worse actually flop then that will kill pretty much every film what isn't Batman, Wonder Woman or related to Harley Quinn.

I would be surprised if they have Barbara as Oracle, rather than as Batgirl. To the extent that the GA knows Batgirl, they know her as Gordon's daughter, thanks to '66 and BTAS (and the comics Batgirl is Babs once again). But, if we have Batgirl and no Oracle, I think that makes Huntress redundant, so who would be the third Bird (assuming Black Canary is in there too)?

    OK; I haven't been reading her current comics other than to know Barbara is walking again, so thanks for the info. But, what's "diverse" about her? A quick look around tells me she's dark-skinned Italian, but I'm not sure that that ticks any boxes by itself.

Sounds good to me. I think there should be some room left to wiggle Katana in there too, since they've got a great actress and platform set by SS. Want to see her character explored. She's primed and ready for it.

This movie isn't a bad idea, but it's weird that they haven't even developed their core characters yet and we're getting another Harley Quinn movie.

  Don't even need to recast him, all they need to do is change his character a fair bit and make him less awkward and weird and it would be easy to do considering he barely had much to do in JL. Miller is a great actor so i'm sure he could do something more in line with the comics.

    It would also be easy to explain the change, in that he's a nervous rookie in JL, so that can be why he was so awkward.
    The humor should stick, but feel cooler and more confident. That's what I hope for anyway. :)

As much as i want a MoS sequel its safe to say this film will do better then it, also this is something Robbie wants to do and as she has a lot well earned say now when it comes to films its easy to see why WB are making this film over something like MoS. Like WW Harley is one of the high points of the DCEU and a character what has captured the casual movie crowd, most would rather see this film then MoS or The Flash..

      I think you can't make a proper judgement on Superman until he has a movie that's not divisive.
      SS also made a lot of money because it was a fun PG-13 movie with characters like the Joker and Batman. It wasn't just Harley even though she stole the movie.
      Birds of Prey will be R rated. That alone will limit it's BO potential. It will probably not make SS money unless it's a pretty good movie.

      The last true Superman hit was a Reeve's film and his reputation is shit right now because of what Snyder done, i love Cavill as Supes and i hope he stays playing him for a long time but his face as Supes will be always bring to mind MoS (what i really like) and BvS. Superman is usually seen as boring and admittedly why Snyder done what he done even if he screwed it up badly and just missed the point.
      Joker and Batman may have sold tickets for SS but Harley was the main focus of the marketing and she was the main talking point of the film and the reason people re-watched it.
      BoP is R-Rated sure but nowadays R-Rated films have seen a resurgence with people wanting more of them. Providing they market BoP right and it gets good reviews there's no reason it can't make Logan or Deadpool 2 money, it already has the selling point in Robbie as Harley again and if anything the R-Rating will attract more people as the chance to see Harley R-rated will be very tempting and a big attraction.
      Look at it this way if you were WB what would you rather have a BoP film what costs 50M to100M (i don't know how small they mean with the budget) with another 100M Marketing what could make anything from 500M to 700M or a Superman film what costs 200M plus lets say 100M-150M Marketing what could make around 600M to 750M?

      Why do you make Zack Snyder a beacon of hate by comparing his work to movies from 80's? Superman (1978) is an awesome movie, Superman 2 is mostly ok since a good part of it was filmed by Richard Donner. But what they have done with Superman after Richard Donner was fired (history repeats itself) is between bad and really bad.
      People mostly remember Christopher Reeve as Superman from the very good first movie, after Donner left we just have a charismatic Christopher Reeve in bad movies.

      Why can't you admit that its successors are bad movies? If people loved Superman 3 & 4, they would adore Superman Returns, but no! Because its mistake is to be a Christopher Reeve movie without the legend himself.
      People are biased and only "liked" Superman 3 and Superman 4 for Christopher Reeve. From IMDB:
      - Superman 1 (1978): 7.3/10 with 141,459 voters
      - Superman 2 (1980): 6.8/10 with 86,466 voters

      That's what happens when you fire a good director. That's what happened with Superman 2 after Donner was fired in 1980, and that's what is happening now with Zack Snyder's hacked Justice League (2017).

It's because of people who can't tolerate one movie like BvS that we had a Frankestein Justice League, for one movie they disagree, some DC fans have decided to sold a complete franchise for soulless action flicks! Now don't come to tell me how funny and successful are MCU movies since they're going to cry again if we have a funny and successful Superman in Thor 3 style.
      It's sad to see that Man of Steel (2013) IMDB score wasn't 7.1/10 and Thor (2011) IMDB score wasn't 7.0/10 before, those movies remain the same but scores changed, one has a little lowered and the other a little increased years later, because of this influence.
      Seriously, I would prefer to be an uncompromised Zack Snyder than a sold Joss Whedon or Geoff Johns. Now don't take it "personal" since I have mentioned a CB writer you really like, because I don't like his flat, generic, boring, unoriginal storytelling, and despite having really beautiful drawings, I didn't like Sinestro Corps for it. The fault may be mine since I haven't started with reading GJ first works but I wasn't lost neither since I knew all the references.       Superman was "mixed" mostly because of his ugly CGI, the only cheesy thing I remember from the movie was "I am also I big fan of justice" and when there's a forced laugh scene with Cyborg... but those are minor details compared to how they have utterly downgraded Batman!
      Zack Snyder already intended to do a more light tone third movie with
      Superman's rebirth in Justice League, we can already see how Henry
      Cavill's Superman looks happy after finding his wife and mother in the
      deleted scenes, how Superman was smiling as you wished before they cut it. Now if you don't believe me, see those deleted footage from Zack Snyder, and tell me that Superman is not smiling, that you don't want to see what was Zack Snyder's vision, that you don't want to know what were the real lines between him and Lois instead of "itchy".

      Whether we agree with the criticism of Snyder's movies or not, the general audience and tons of critics and fans have decided this version of Superman is bad because they don't like Snyder or his choices.
      So yeah, sadly, Superman's reputation is on the low. Hunter is not wrong there.
      I think a solid cameo in Shazam can help him bounce back in popularity though, and, certainly, if we got a movie with a more resonant spirit after that, he'll be a star again (even if he's not as popular as Harley).

      I don't think Superman is tainted to the point of being incapable at the box office. To me it narrows down to quality and good marketing. If it has both, it can be a big hit.
      BoP is the less risky movie, sure, but that doesn't necessarily mean it would be the more profitable one.

      Well that is the minority opinion sure i agree. Most though consider WW to be a great film and the best of the DCEU, its easily the most successful DCEU film what over-performed, impacted WW comics, got fantastic reviews, got insanely good word of mouth and was loved greatly by audiences. In fact because of all this there is a huge chance WW84 could be the first DCEU film to maybe hit a Billion.

      Mos underperformed with mixed reviews, if you read my comment, i said that a well received superman movie that audience love, will definitely come out on top. Harley Quinn wasnt the only thing that made SS so popular, now lets see how shell do on her own with an R- rating on top of that.

    MoS under-performed and Returns killed any sequels it might have had with BvS making people hate him even more. I love Superman but the casual movie crowd find him boring or too powerful to be interesting, Harley Quinn on the other hand is more popular then Wonder Woman and is one of the few things about DC right now that people love and want to see more off especially Robbie's Harley. She sells a ton of merch, is insanely popular choice for cosplayers, has a top selling comic and was the main reason SS the film made as much as it did, she's also getting an adult Animated show for DC Universe because WB know how much she sells, Harley is everywhere DC wise and pops up in all the big events and has loads of guest spots in other comics, point is Harley sells where's Superman doesn't.

I am actually glad this movie is getting made and i genuinely hope it turns out really well. I don't know if it needs to be rated R though? Maybe have two theatrical versions,one R rated one and one with all the f bombs and gore removed for a younger audience.

I still cant believe we haven't got a MoS 2 yet though. Superman is arguably DCs biggest icon. Not the most popular i know but i am a big fan and i know if done right, we could get a modern Superman film that could surpass what Donner done for the character.

In practice, there is no difference (visually) between a movie with quota's and forced diversity, and one which happens to have an equally diverse cast. Again, the problem is not diversity in and of itself. It is the reason behind it.
      When JJ Abrams openly says "we were in the whitest fucking room of all time, we needed to cast some poc" about Star Wars Ep 7 (yes, he literally said that), then you know it's not by chance that Finn was black. Imagine anyone said that about blacks... "this was the blackest fucking room of all time", you damn well know there'd be a global outrage and this person would be accused of racism. But because he said it about white people, I'm supposed to praise it? Fuck that.
      They actively excluded white people so they could force their bigoted agenda of diversity. That doesn't mean the act of hiring blacks is wrong. That doesn't mean Finn should've been white (though it is confusing for many, because many thought Stormtroopers were clones). It's why they do it that's troublesome. They think skin color matters. They openly and proudly exclude whites, but suddenly that's not racism, but progress? I'm not saying they "should have" gotten more whites. I'm saying it shouldn't even have been a point of discussion. If John Boyega was the best pick for Finn, he would've gotten the role regardless of race. Now, he only got it specifically because he was black. If he was white, he wouldn't have got it, period. You don't think that's a problem?? It is also insulting to blacks and Boyega, as if to say they couldn't have made it based on merit alone. Truly, the soft bigotry of low expectations. This should upset anyone with a genuine sense of fairness, equality of opportunity (not outcome) and those who believe people should be judged for their character, not skin color.
      It is the same with this article... They hired specifically a woman, and a poc to do the job and they are bragging about it online. Meanwhile, they got Christina Hodson, who's a garbage writer when they could've gotten hundreds of other, vastly more talented writers, but because they are male, they didn't do so and went for politics over merit. They also got Cathy Yan, who is a complete wildcard and we have no idea how good she is. Again, politics over merit and experience.
      If both of these individuals were highly talented and they were picked solely because of their skill, then it wouldn't be a problem... thing is, they were CLEARLY chosen BECAUSE they are female. If you cry (and you fucking know you do) sexism or discrimination if male directors are chosen specifically because they are male (which is fair), then you should be consistent and call it out when it's the other way around. Not call it "progress".
      That is why forcing diversity is bad. Affirmative action is by definition, discriminatory (that's a fact). Do you know how we call it in my country? We call AA "positieve discriminatie". It's not exactly hidden, it IS discrimination. Just because you think it only affects "white men" (yeah, fuck those straight, cis, able-bodied white men, they should CHECK THEIR PRIVILEGE) and you somehow deem that good (which speaks volumes and proves you're a hypocrite), doesn't actually negate the fact that this is discrimination. Plain and simple. It is WRONG.

Margot's commitment to the film and its character is perfect, but I hope Harley does not end up being a member of Birds of Prey as such, but someone who crosses paths with that group for a common goal. Katana (remember, "diverse cast") could be the link, since in addition to being part of SS, also part of Birds of Prey in comics.
3. Margot declares to lean more to show characters without superpowers. That can almost assure us that we will see Huntress and Batgirl as rumored.
4. I would like to see the costume that Harley wears in New 52 and that we almost see in SS, if not for the fact that they eliminated him from the final footage...

Love your suggestion in #2 there. Maybe after their shared goal is accomplished, she declines joining the group and wanders off another direction to take care of her own personal business, leading to the Harley/Joker movie, or Sirens.
I have to say though, and I mean no disrespect, I deeply, deeply dislike the New 52 costume - and many of her other looks too. haha :x
The make-up is cool, though the vibe of it more suits someone like Domino. I always viewed Harley as 'cute', and the 'badass hooker' look clashes with that.

This is technically a Harley movie but the title is the name of a team she's not part of. So there's 2 options here:
1- She'll be part of the team
2- She won't be the main focus
Either one is dumb

If the title isn;t Gotham City Sirens it's because probably neither Catwoman and Ivy will be in it

Interesting. So this could be the February 14, 2020 release date if this budget is low and production doesn't get delayed. I guess if we are to get another DCEU film in 2020, it'll probably be The Flash or The Batman (it will not be both), either of which will come out July 24, 2020 at the earliest. June 5 does not seem to be an option at this point.

Also, I find it interesting how despite only having two of the five films being financial hits (Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman), the DCEU is still going on mostly due to how things are spaced out production wise. Despite JL bombing miserably, they didn't scrap their plans because Aquaman was almost done at the time and Shazam was already in pre-production.

Speaking of which, IF Aquaman does well financially and critically, DC will be in a better position financially. I have faith in Wan making the film at the very least good-but-not-great, he has a pretty good track record.
