Rumor: 'Joker' story details and his real name revealed?

Joker starts filming in September but there's still not a lot we know about the movie other than it will star Joaquin Phoenix and be an origin story. A new rumor hopes to fill in some of the gaps.

According to That Hashtag Show, The Joker's real name in the movie will be "Arthur Fleck". He comes back home to the city to live with his older (possibly dying) mother in her apartment. Fleck’s mother was described to That Hashtag Show as “very attractive in her youth“, “obsessed with her former employer” and unable to believe “this is what her life has come to.”

Last night we learned that Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz is currently in talks to play a single mother and the possible love interest in the movie. That Hashtag Show says the name of her character is Sophie Dumond. Perhaps The Joker meets her at his mom's apartment building.

That Hashtag Show also backs up previous reports from Collider, and says that the role Robert De Niro is up for is a late night TV talk show host named Murray Franklin. They also corroborate the news that Thomas Wayne will be in the movie and describe him as cheesy, tanned, rich-looking, and someone who is in their 60s.

Now if you want to speculate and try to piece all of those characters and details together... perhaps The Joker's mom used to work for Thomas Wayne at Wayne Enterprises? Could he be the former employer that she's obsessed with? If she was wronged by Wayne, maybe The Joker will want to get revenge and get even.

Again, that last part is just speculation. Let me know what you make of all these rumors in the comments below.

One of the greatest things about the Joker was that there was never a definitive origin or identity for him. He remained a nebulous character. Now all that is about to change unless they announce that this isn't necessarily canon and are treating it as an Elseworld type tale.
I always thought that if they did a film like this that it would be best to have it told in flashbacks and have him already gone mad at the outset. Have him exhibiting multiple personality disorder and each of them with their own memory of how he came to be. Each of them tragic. Each of them capable of producing the Joker. But we the viewer and even the Joker himself unsure of which is true or if it's an amalgam of all of them in some fashion or even all of them being false and he's truly blocked it out.

  This is only canon to itself. It’s confirmed it’s not part of the DCEU, it’s obviously not part of the comics, and there’s no reason to believe it’s part of Nolanverse or Tim Burton’s Batman.

      TKJ showed his origin, and that WAS his origin.
      Remember, in TKJ, the origin we see is not being narrated by Joker, it is shown to us seperate.
      So, my take was always that the origin in TKJ was canonical, but only known nto us, the audience. Within the universe, no one knows his origin, and he doesn't remember it and indeed has created several and is not sure which is real.
      That panel doesn't negate that we saw his true origin in TKJ.
      And if it wasn't his true origin, I don't understand why they would bother showing it.

        My feeling while reading it was that the point was to get us invested in him and sympathize, only to have it all be a 'joke', and turn us on our heads.
        Your interpretation isn't necessarily invalid, and I think it's fair to see it that way, but I also think Moore (and Joker) are trying to get us to feel skeptical of believing anything we read.

        I don't know. The way his origin story in that comic is separate from the rest of the tale and that it isn't told by him but by the narrator always made me think it was clear it was meant to be his actual origin. It just works so damn well, and other parts of it have been confirmed, such as him wearing the red hood and being at the chemical plant that night.
        It would be cool if Moore commented on it.
        Folks nowadays are a LOT more adamant that the joker can't possibly have an origin, and it's something I never really understood.

        It's like he's toying with the reader. He lets you think you know him, but then laughs about it later as the rug's yanked out from where you thought you were standing. It's about highlighting the chaotic feeling of the character, the inability to pin him down or have any real feeling of control or understanding, and also a bit of a 'gotcha'.
        That's what those adamant people you're referring to enjoy - and I really do too, but that doesn't mean I can't also enjoy the origin (or potentially the upcoming movie) in a more literal sense like you do. I just prefer the mystique; adds to his unpredictability and madness.
        And of course, I'm just explaining why I like what I like, not condemning your take on it.
        I don't think Moore will comment on it - he likes leaving us with questions and ambiguous, suggestive ideas. He also isn't very fond of his work on the book for some reason.

        I just....I don't think there is anything to hint at that being the case, at all. There is nothing that contradicts the origin shown, and in fact it serves the story well.
        The comedian backstory is told in the same way as him being a patsy and falling in the vat is, and we know that last part is truly a part of his origin as it has been corroborated in several in canon books.
        I'm not saying your take is invalid either, what I am saying is I can't find any support for being the case, at all. It seems like adding a lot on top when there isn't a reason to do so. And it's not just you, many people seem to do it. But then, I'm in the minority on this, sooo.
        For me, The joker having an origin that the audience knows, doesn't interfere with him being a mysterious character that no one knows the origin of in universe. I see it as the best of both worlds.
        And yeah, Moore became a grouchy old curmudgeon in his later years.

        'He' refers to both of them, but mostly Moore's sort-of subtextual intentions through the writing as I interpreted it. He's basically acting like the Joker by telling the story the way he did, so it feels kind of like the Joker wrote it.
        That's merely my feeling, of course. Much like the ending with Batman choking the Joker and we can't tell if he kills him (though the laugh does abruptly cut off...), a clear answer isn't there, and I believe that's intentional.
        Personally, I prefer to think that Batman didn't kill Joker, but I kinda dig the idea that he might have, and I like to consider the character/psychological/philosophical ramifications of that. Scary, but fascinating.
        Why people do add the layer on is just because they feel teased by the idea and fancy it. :)
        I still love Alan Moore, and I feel bad for him.

        As I pointed out, the origin we see isn't being told by Joker at all. He literally has nothing to do with it. It is *only* the narrator who is showing us, the audience those panels.
        So, in that sense, 'he' can *only* refer to Moore, and I've never seen evidence that Moore was trying to play some kind of joke on the audience, or give us any kind of gotcha. The idea that he is writing somewhat as the joker is interesting to ponder, but I just don't see any indication of that being the case. The origin we see works perfectly within the context of the story, and if there is a gotcha, I'm not sure what it would be.
        I agree it is super interesting to think that Bruce may have killed Joker, and love the ambiguous ending when you take the tale on it's own. Of course, since it was made canon we know he didn't....but ignoring everything that came after it still works with the ambiguous ending. Truly an amazing book.
        I like Moore as well. I think he is doing OK though.

        That origin is part of the multiple choice. That's the past Joker recently "remembered" what set in motion the events of the story, its only one possible take though and the book itself tells you that "origin" you read most likely is not true. If you think otherwise well you clearly don't know the story that well or its hidden depths, that multiple choice aspect in TKJ is what inspired Nolan for his Joker's past.

        The origin we see is not narrated by joker. No where in the book is it implied that the origin we see is not his origin.
        The only place that comes from is his line in universe saying he remembers it different ways, and it is that line that inspired Nolan.
        Tell me, where in the book does it say the origin we saw is not his origin? Provide a scan, please.

You clearly don't know Moore's writing at all, its widely known that the origin shown could very well be false as its clearly the origin what Joker has recently remembered that has set in motion the events of the story, if you don't see connection and how the stories impact each other then you clearly haven't read the book more then once.

        As I said, that scan is of Joker saying that in universe, and the origin we see is being narrated to us by someone out of universe.

        Morrison has not said what you say at all.
        And you are still confusing the Joker within the story(in which joker as an unreliable narrator is a character) with Moore telling the story , where the origin he tells us is separate from anything the joker says or does.
        Did you ever watch Buffy? The best example I can come up with is the Episode Fool for Love, where we see Spike's origin, but it shows him telling it differently to Buffy.
        We the audience see what really happened, despite Spike serving as an unreliable narrator.

The comic tells you it yourself and you don't understand it, you also clearly don't understand what an unreliable narrator is and the fact the "origin" is the bit unreliable because the present day stuff is completely linear and happens exactly as it happens.

      After what he said and what happened with the previous Marvel director into DC? I don't think so. I liked his two GotG movies and would have liked to see his trilogy, but would those movies be as good/appreciated if they weren't under the control of Disney? MCU financially work, but I think that they aren't producing director driven movies, MCU movies are just following specifications. I don't know if WB has already done that... maybe for the Harry Potter franchise under the direction of David Yates? Or he's just really lucky guy to do sucessful movies lol

        James Gunn said a lot of dumb things but he shouldn't be crucified for it. He's not that person now. Look at Mel Gibson. He said a lot of stupid things and was nominated for an oscar for best director. James Gunn is a talented writer and director and I don't want too see his career end this way.

    Which is reasonable. I'm also still not sure how I feel about this. I'm hoping for a twist in the end where it's revealed it wasn't his actual origin story, but rather his own imagination, and he doesn't exactly remember how he became Joker, and does something twisted to the person he was narrating the story.

      i dont care if someone plays with the idea of an origin. Why do people view that as such a definitive crucial aspect of the character? The joker is highly interpretable. You can give him an origin if thats how you see him. Just like Burton did. We love the joker because he is a crazy clown guy that does fucked up shit adn has this super twisted relationship with batman. Not because he has a mysterious past. Thats how I see it at least. Also, this isn't canon to anything, so why does it even matter? Plus, who's to say they wont do something like the whole TKJ multiple choice thing? There are so many wild things they could do with this movie

        Because the fact nobody knows about his past is perhaps the scariest thing about the character for many people, it also makes the character much more interesting, unpredictable, and mysterious than others. Making a movie about his troubled past with a sad origin will not only humanize the character, but also take away one of the most interesting things about him. You don't want to sympathize with Joker. I wouldn't mind if it was Bane, or Deathstroke, but Joker is different.
        I will watch it for sure, it'll make a lot of money, Phoenix will deliver a brilliant performance, I just don't think it's a good idea. There are so many characters, like Deathstroke as I mentioned above, now that would have been a good idea. I guess I'll be okay if they manage to pull off a twist revealing whole story to be false as I wrote in my previous reply. Also, TKJ was kind of definitive take on Joker's origin.

  I actually agree with everything you wrote to be honest.
  I love this character.
  However, since we are talking about a comic book character and a film, wouldn't it be cool if the film imitates the art since there are SO many different variants and adaptations in comic books? This does not have to be so linear. Theres room for different stories.
  I think ANYONE can have a great moment in directing even though i agree Phillips is pretty weak. Look at Reny Harlan and Cliffhanger. This could be Phillips Cliffhanger. Or Luc Besson and his Fifth Element.

    Yes, again i agree, but since we know Leto's Joker is also going forward can we not assume after all the chaos from previous film decisions that WB does not have a plan? Maybe they have a way of taking the GA hand and guiding them in a thoughtful, understanding way into this different world or version. This is after all DCBlack. I hope they have a plan for the GA because yes, it may be confusing.

      Again he IS living in Thomas' world and not Bruce. Maybe The Joker is a mantle and Leto and maybe even Ledger is an interpretation of this original version by Phoenix.

This is gonna be...weird. I'm down for all of the weirdness except the "love interest" for the Joker. He doesn't need a love interest, in my opinion. Hollywood can't stand NOT having one. I just think he's the wrong character to use romance with. This is gonna be...weird.
Also, are they taking a few pages out of Dark Knight Returns with the talk-show host role? That'd be pretty neat to see.

      I definitely agree to an extent, but I also loved it to an extent. It's a tug-o-war for me. :(
      My instinct is to say I want a more classical Thor film with a focus on that epic mythological feel, but the rationalist in me says some of that was there, and it was spectacularly portrayed, and there was some other great material too despite the 'Deadpool'isms.

        I'm not saying that a Thor movie can't have jokes or levity in it. (in fact, the first two Thor movies were among my least favorite in the MCU because of how dry and boring they were), but this movie took it way WAY too far in the other direction, to the point where I couldn't take any of the dramatic moments in it seriously.
        It almost felt like one of those SNL sketches that got turned into a movie.
        I mean, after Thor jokes around with what is basically the Devil of Marvel's Norse mythology (Surtur) as if they are two drinking buddies, how the hell am I supposed to be engaged when he is destroying Asgard in the end of the movie.

      I could get on board with that, for the right chatacter(s). He could also very successfully continue DC’s legacy of beautiful visuals; Thor 3 was absolutely gorgeous!

Don’t get all this Joker shouldn’t have a backstory.
Erm didn’t he get one in Batman 1989? I think they’ll be a few twists in this and it’ll leave you thinking “did that really happen” in terms of his backstory seen as how twisted and insane the Joker is.

They need to throw water on the idea of Joker and Batman being half brothers. Don't get me wrong I am super stoked about this movie for SURE. And I think Joaquin Phoenix's Joker will be right up there with Ledger's. But having him and Batman's brother is going a step overboard. I mean it could definitely fit as far as Joker never wanting to see Batman actually die. And why he is always trying to get Batman to kill people. But it's a bit too much.

People need to let go of this idea that the Joker cannot have an origin. He had one in Batman 89. He had on in the animated series. There have been several origins in the comics that contradict each other, but that isn't because the Joker has no origin, it is because DC doesn't give a crap about continuity. When TKJ came out that was intended to be his origin. Then Batman Confidential gave him a completely different origin as a hitman. Do you have any idea how many different origin stories Batman and Superman have? It doesn't mean they don't have one. Thats ridiculous.
