Laurence Fishburne doesn't think he's "on call" to return to the DCEU; comments on 'Man of Steel 2'

Laurence Fishburne is one of the few actors to appear in both DC and Marvel movies. This weekend he made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Ant-Man and The Wasp, but DC fans know him best as The Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White.

In a new interview with Den of Geek, Fishburne exlained that he doesn't think he's "on call" to return to the DC Extended Universe. He also hasn't heard anything about Man of Steel 2 and seemed disappointed with the state of the DCEU as a whole. Check out the DC portion of his new interview below.

Are you still on call with DC to come back as Perry White?
I don't think I'm still on call. I was unfortunately unable to go do some work on what turned out to be the Justice League movie. I don't know that I need to go back or if they'll have me back or not, but I was grateful to have been a part of it. I loved working with Zack (Snyder), I think he makes an incredible superhero movie. I'm just excited to be a part of this (the MCU) now.
So you don't know if there's a Man of Steel 2 in the works or anything like that?
I don't. I don't. I haven't heard anything about it. They just fell behind the eight-ball. I really wish they had started 20 years ago. But that's all right, they're where they are.

Despite Superman star Henry Cavill's excitement and ideas, we haven't really had any solid news on Man of Steel 2. It doesn't seem like it's a priority at Warner Bros. right now. Of course that could all change with a surprise announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in a couple of weeks. We'll have to wait and see.

why go back to Perry if you can be an actual black superhero in the biggest superhero franchise of all time ? His character Bill Foster is the superhero Goliath in the comics, who was the biggest (no pun intended) casualty in the comic book version of Civil War.

    Uh no. Fishburne is old and fat. He’s not doing much action, even with CG.
    And BP is way, way above Goliath. This is like saying that Plastic Man should have a film. They would have better chances with Luke Cage.

True but if they do goliath it'd probably be someone else. Like how Hank Pym is former Ant-Man, Giant Man, now Ultron hybrid in comics but in film he's former Ant-Man, now mentor and scientist and not ever wear the suit. It'd be a mention more than anything because Michael Douglas never wore the suit at all. Also journalists are heroes in there own right too. Watergate, spotlight, just different costumes although I think I went off topic with that last one. Anyway yeah I'm sure he'll come back if he can if they call him back. Because like good ol'Marty Huggins says, "It's A Mess." And I don't think they have anything set for Man of Steel 2 yet. They are still going through that AT&T shift after all, money is to be made for those execs to give a 2 cents.

Just keep Henry Cavill as Superman but dump the rest of the cast. I wasn't that thrilled when Amy Adams was cast as Lois Lane in the first place. Good actress but wrong for the role in my opinion. Olivia Wilde or Meghan Ory for Lois Lane and I like to see Tom Hanks cast as Perry White.

  Green Lantern was suppose to be their initial set up I think. I believe the original plan was to do a sequel and then GL and Flash together and keep building from there.

    A side from the movie itself (that was horrible) that green lantern movie was a really bad starting point, for me at least. They made him be the first superhero known to the public for some reason (I think it should be superman, like in the comics), made no real effort to put hostility in the relationship between Jordan and Sinestro for a future movie, and worst of all, they killed off Waller

  True. But just in case a filmmaker isn't able to make a great Batman movie anytime soon, that trilogy set the bar for the modern era. The Superman franchise doesn't have that. And a successful shared DC universe from WB, is something that may never happen. Consistency with their non-Nolan DC movies, has been a real struggle for them, since ALWAYS.

      This sounds pretty reasonable to me. And if there were a chance it might screw up BvS's story, they could just go with a non-world ending scenario so maybe people aren't as convinced Superman is a hero.
      Say, Metallo hunting Superman with Lex secretly behind it, and thus a more detailed depiction and discussion of the discovery of Kryptonite, which would also bolster Lex as a character more pre-BvS.
      It would also give us time to establish things like the ice breath Superman randomly just has in the Steppenwolf fight later. lol

      I was more thinking Metallo + Lex behind the scenes, or something smaller scale to keep the public from getting to know Superman too well prior to BvS. And hell, a cat rescue would've won the general audience over even if you and I don't need it.
      18 months is still a long time.

      He means other DC movies, not just Superman. I think it's reasonable, but WB just didn't have a strong game plan, or weren't comfortable with committing.
      If you look at Marvel, they put Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk out at the same time. Not that Hulk was a masterpiece, but it helped get the ball rolling quickly and gave the audience something more to chew on.

      There was a gap between Iron Man/Hulk and then Iron Man 2, but I consider that their 'feeling it out' period. WB was MUCH more timid, and it's fair to say that has cost them a bit, even if MoS was great.

      But then you have 2011 with two Marvel films although yes 2012 and 2013 only had one each but i guess Marvel didn't want to get cocky to soon and didn't know how big Avengers would be.
      Thing is though WB has all of DC and even just focusing on the Trinity they would off had bigger names then Marvel to work with. Just imagine MoS in 2013, The Batman in 2014, Wonder Woman and Aquaman in 2015, BvS in 2016 with SS and then i don't know The Flash and then JL in 2017. BvS could have been so much better if we had The Batman before it especially if that Batman film done Death In The Family.

      Yes, but they could've made more than just a superman movie, 33 months feels like a big waste in my opinion. The end result was a rushed BvS storyline.

      Yeah, I think they were too nervous to commit to more than one project at a time until they saw how people reacted, whereas Marvel just dove in with both Hulk and Iron Man.
      Would've been nice to get a Green Lantern movie in that time too, but they had just dropped that ball already.

    Taika Watiti? He has great scores as a movie director on IMDB, and his Korg was really funny in Thor 3.

    Being part of it and reading the script and seeing how it all came together, I wasn't really surprised with how it was received
    They were like "Shut up Taika, just say your line and do the scene" and I said okay, and just sat there literally doing nothing and wondering "What the f*** am I doing in this movie?"

Always thought the DCEU should have started with Nolan's Batman, throw in Routh as Superman too, he was actually a good Superman, just a bad script.... WB maybe right now would have been as big or even bigger than what the MCU is right now? Even half as big is much better than what they have right now.

No signs here that I can see that he wouldn’t WANT to come back. The opposite, in fact. He just seems disappointed it’s taken so long to start MoS 2, and he likes Zack Snyder and his films, so yeah. Anyway, if we ever do get MoS 2, I’m sure they will ask him back.

    Just for the record, this was a Snyder scene. ;)
    He was building to this iconic version of Superman over the trilogy, but it sadly got all janked up. It would have felt so much more rewarding.
    I love Lois' monologue here, and would have probably come close to tears if Hans Zimmer got to score the scene.

      Supes shouldn't die so early in the first place, and thats all snyder. What would be a good explanation for clark to disappear for over a year? I bet snyder had no intention on explaining that, he'd let the audience fill it in like he always does. Just like he ignored the details on lex finding out their identities.

      Idk, I wasn’t hired to write the movies. For all I know, they would change his secret identity altogether after that. Was JL even over a year after BvS in-universe? I thought it was much sooner than that. If it never gets explained (because Snyder was booted before he could come up with the explanation he planned and no one bothers to think of anything else), I’ll just assume a retcon to that newspaper that we see that says Clark died being that he actually went missing, and that the DP workers never came to his funeral :P
      Finding the identities is an obvious implication.

Despite that when he first came in, MoS wasn’t his idea and part of the script was already done. And then there’s BvS where the executives told him to cut it, despite the supposed standing ovation and that they’ve had him edit it.
Yeah I don’t total control. This is like with Marvel. The directors really don’t have total control, cause the moment Feige says no, they have to follow his demands.

  Writing and producing credits don’t equal to total control. If he had total control, why would he let Jenkins retcon WW? If he had total control, why would the studio tell him to edit his film, despite supposedly liking it? If he had total control, why was part of the MoS already done before he was hired?

Plus, when WB went to Nolan and told him what they wanted to do with MoS and he declined the project, he suggested two names: Snyder and Darren Aronofsky. That right there tells me that WB never wanted to go the "safe" route with the DCEU.

  That's a bad excuse. A director can improve a script and story. In fact it's part of his job. A director oversees everything.
  That being said, MoS story wasn't bad. The script was weak though, the chronology was weird, it had pacing issues and it lacked character development. The execution also had a lot of problems.
  Also, let's not forget Snyder opted for that very controversial ending of Superman killing Zod, which turned out to be completely pointless. Snyder had plenty of control.
  As for BvS, it needed to be cut. There's no way around it. Releasing a tedious and overlong 3 hour BvS cut would have meant less screenings and less people willing to watch it again, thus lower box office numbers. Snyder shouldn't have shot 4 hours of footage.

They had the Nolan batman when the mcu started. Batman out performed the mcu. The problem was nolan's movies weren't comicbooky. You can't build a DCEU from it.

They wasted a pretty good opportunity to set up Metallo in BvS. Rather than do that revenge storyline with Wally, they should have saved it for John Cobern.

And you can easily do a smaller budget with him and you move away from the world ending crap.

    Yeah, I agree with what you're saying but this isn't a topic fan's of the MCU will let you broach with any criticism.
    They still see every Marvel character as a Q list or K list or a beta delta 6 list character, suggesting whatever BO they obtain is justifiable because of a made up fanboy list system general audiences don't seem to care or even know about.
    With 20 films under their belts, the strength of the Marvel brand allows them to receive a pass regarding anything they do, for the foreseeable future anyway.

      Because it's correct. Even in the standards of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ant-Man and Wasp are kind of second bananas. Not every single character is gonna reach Iron Man or Black Panther levels of success.
      So them having a higher opening than their first film is nothing particularly alarming.

      Perhaps, but like I said, not every character is gonna be as popular as everyone else even though the franchise itself is huge right now. I mean, it's a whole meme in mainstream pop culture that Hawkeye is "everyone's least favorite Avenger" for a reason.
      So while I get the point you were making (as well as the claim that if it were DC, people would be spelling doom and gloom, which is accurate), Ant-Man and the Wasp doing very well at the box office but not as well as Black Panther or Spider-Man doesn't tell me the MCU is in trouble; it just tells me Ant-Man and Wasp are less popular characters with audiences than Black Panther or Spider-Man.

      DC's trinity became old news the minute the avengers movie came out. Iron, caps,n thor became A list while everybody started forgetting there even was a wonder woman. So by the time BvS came out, it was already too late, hype was biggest only among the fans, even the media only reported negative aspects of it before it came out. Then it came out...
      But still, do own the fact that DC became old news a long time ago, just the wannabe avengers, even if Snyder never existed.

      Black Panther is bigger then Ant Man, Black Panther has a near all black cast whats a big deal, Black Panther had amazing reviews, Black Panther had loads of hype, Black Panther was popular in Civil War, Black Panther was an event film and Black Panther opened at a time where there was fuck all competition at the box office.

      Without context it means nothing. Ant Man and the Wasp cost half of what Justice League cost, and will probably net 100 mil, which is a good take for a smaller tier character like Ant Man.

Because no one expected huge numbers and it also hasn't opened everywhere because the World Cup is still on. Ant Man is doing exactly what people thought it would, Marvel wasn't counting on Thor Ragnarok numbers and they most likely expect a final gross closer to Doctor Strange and Thor The Dark World. Also its opened when both Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World are both dominating the box office, end of the day a Ant Man opening "low" isn't a issue but a film starring Batman and the JL opening "low" certainly is.

Honestly, I've said this before but I'll say it again. WB are fucking idiots, they should've started pumping out DCEU films Henry Cavil has been Superman in three films and only one of them was a Superman film, Ben Affleck in two films (not including a brief cameo). Why were they sat twiddling their thumbs for a couple of years after MoS? As soon as they realised the critical reception was ok compared to Green Lantern they should've green-lit an entire batch of projects they should've had in pre-production.
