on Henry Cavill confirms 'Man of Steel 2' discussions, says he has "a lot of ideas"

Yesterday Henry Cavill said that he's hoping he gets to play Superman again "sooner rather than later" and in a new interview with the Associated Press, Cavill revealed a few small, but important updates about Man of Steel 2.

"I would love to make a Man of Steel 2," Cavill said last night at CinemaCon. "It all depends on everyone getting their ducks in a row and the right storytellers being attached. I have a lot of ideas, I've had a lot of discussions with certain people about certain things. In an ideal world, yeah, that will be added to the slate."

Last year we heard that director Matthew Vaughn was talking to Warner Bros. about Man of Steel 2, but there haven't been any solid updates since then. Hopefully things come together sooner rather than later for Henry Cavill's next Superman movie.

          Seriously, even if Hugh Jackman trains hard, I am sure he took some drugs for X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

            Well he says there wasn't any drugs and pretty much everyone working on the films says that's all natural. I believe him as well because for starters Jackman doesn't seem the type at all and takes pride in getting that body naturally and that the type of training and diet he was on would give you the muscles and body he had, end of the day the reason he retired from Wolverine was because the training and diet he was on was just too much for him to do now, you also have his trainer who has said how much Jackman worked out and Jackman constantly gave you updates on social media on how he was doing.

        This is not a reason, it's harder to keep those muscles with time, it's physically and psychologically painful. He's in shape because he has trained hard as hell since Man of Steel, why should he wait several years to film another Superman movie? We want a Superman movie, Henry wants a Superman movie, it's up to WB to not be dumb anymore.

          “It’s physically and psychologically painful.” What the hell are you talking about?! Exercise and muscle development actually does the exact opposite to the body and mind. The healthier and stronger you are the better you feel and that’s not an opinion, that’s nutritional and physical science. Cavill has plenty of time to do multiple Superman films at his age.

            I am talking about doing exercises all the day, eating the same proteins that make you think it's sh*t after a month, for a movie contract (or for girls). I am not talking about the jogging you do for your health and your mind.

            Chris Evans is not old (37), but in all his interviews he's upset about his physical training. Henry is 32, but if you wait 5 years for a Man of Steel 2, then he will have the same age than Chris Evans...

            Lol, the fact that you think jogging is healthier then muscle development only adds to your ignorance on the subject. And your protein statement is sooooo ridiculous, there are dozens of protein options for variety, if someone thinks the only way to build muscle is to eat chicken and broccoli five times a Day is a freaking idiot. What Chris Evans feels is irrelevant, Henry has never complained about working out in fact he’s always been complementary about it. And who said Henry is going to have to wait for five years?

            I do sport, muscle development too, but nothing comparable to those actors who completely change their bodies, it's impossible without the right teacher and diet, and what they do is far behind what you earn for your mind when you practice.

            I hope Henry would not have to wait for his upcoming movie, I am just afraid about WB strategy since Justice League.

            booo hoo, if they are tired of working out then maybe they shouldn't sign contracts to be Captain America and Superman.... they are getting paid millions, along with having top trainers and nutritionist, to do a job that requires one shirtless scene (sometimes no shirtless scenes).

        Aside from the muscle building that gets tougher with age, his hairline is also unfortunately receding. And even though make up can help with that, there're going to be more and more things they'll have to cover up the older he gets, especially since Superman is not supposed to age like a regular man. He has to be pristine and well preserved even 10 years down the line. Better to get as many films out of him as possible.

    He's such a class guy, i've said this before but i love that he's still dedicated to the role and clearly loves playing him and wants continue playing him for as long as possible. I do hope though if MoS 2 happens they keep it small scale instead of yet another world or city ending plot as that's getting tiring now in these films.

    While it'd be "ideal" to make MoS 2, I think it'd be really hard to make it interesting and high stakes. I mean, he already fought Doomsday and died! Where else can you go from there? WB blew their load WAAAAAAAY too early with Doomsday.

        The death of superman should've been a pay off, not just thrown away in a movie without being earned. It should feel like how people will feel when they see their heroes die in infinity war.

          100% agreed. Sure, I felt something when Supes died in BvS, but if they had done it the proper way, I would have had diffuculties not to start crying in the theatre. So disappionting we might never see it actually happen like that.

        Films aren't comics and general audiences don't look at this stuff the way comic readers do. End of the day WB and Snyder shot their load way too soon, Doomsday could have been a great 3rd film villain because there would actually be the feeling of Superman actually dying and not coming back, when Superman "died" in BvS i felt nothing like many others because there was no threat of it being permanent. You know watching Infinity War last night i actually had fear and dread because there was this real threat of characters dying and staying dead where's with BvS i had no fear for Superman's life.

            Well I only disliked one DCEU film, which was MoS. I have stated repeatedly over numerous articles about my hatred towards multiple MCU films because they had pissed me off.

            Yeah it clear that some of the characters will come back and a look at Phase 4 will tell you who but there's also some who might not and some who will mostly likely die in Part 2 next year especially when contracts end and some of these actors and actresses wanting to move on. End of the day when Superman died no one believed that he would stay dead at all but if Stark,Thor or Cap died (just using them as an example and not saying they live or die) then very well could stay dead as all 3 of the actors contracts have ended and at least 2 of them have said they want to move on.

            I can honestly guarantee that only one character will still stay dead, and it’s probably gonna be Tony. If you’re aiming for a lasting shock to the audience, then it would be better to kill off one character instead of multiple characters.

            Evans has said he wants to move on so Cap will most likely die as well. There's also at least 2 deaths in Infinity War what will most likely stick as well.

            Honestly i haven't spoiled anything and i'm taking as if i haven't seen the film, i'm only speculating and using certain characters as examples to fuel my point. Evans wanting to quit after these films has been known for years as well and him dying is something we have all wondered.

            Even if it is Tony (SPOILER: He didn't die...for now)...It will have been earned, because he's one of the founding Avengers, and pretty much the Godfather in the MCU. Audiences love him; if he were to die, they would feel it, way more than anybody felt the death of Superman.

            But the fact is, that pretty much ANY character that dies will have earned it more than Superman, who died in only his second appearance in the DCFU. People don't just love one or two characters; almost ALL of them have sentimental value for viewers. That's what Superman didn't cultivate.

        They didn't stop, but at least they tried to introduce new concepts and ideas in its wake prior to resurrecting him, instead of doing it right away like the DCFU did. Nevertheless, Superman became boring after his resurrection, to the point they've had to do multiple reboots since then, to kinda reset expectations, which goes to mr nobody's point.

            It still wouldn't work though, even batman killed multiple people in the dceu. All this no kill rule became useless when they all broke it.

            Not really. The heroes can still choose to not resort to killing. Batman already showed regret from his actions, and is trying to become a better person. So now he has to struggle with not giving in to temptation again.

            Yes, but that would make no sense though, especially in batman case. A murderer cant just kill and then just decide not to kill anymore without consequences. He should be in jail with the rest of the criminals he put there. Supes gets a pass for killing zod though.

            He did experience consequences. He was plagued with guilt and was having suicidal thoughts. Not to mention the mercenaries he killed were trying to help Lex. You may as well say that Tony Stark should be imprisoned for murder and interfering in international affairs.

            The DCFU Superman let his father die, just in the off chance someone might find out he had powers. I'm sure if they feel Superman needs a PR revamp, they won't mind the contradictions, though.

          Superman vs. The Elite/What's So Funny about Truth, Justice & The American Way would work just fine in the DCEU. Consider also that the SAME STORY came from a continuity where Superman EXECUTED Zod, Zaora and Quex-Ul with kryptonite before he finally made his vow solid in the arena on Warworld (MY NAME IS SUPERMAN! AND I DON'T KILL!).

          It also adds another layer to the story where Manchester Black can point out Superman's hypocrisy for not killing any more when he's done it already, to which Superman can retort by telling him that killing is a necessity when all other options are exhausted, not something you just do to take an "easy" way out for convenience sake.

          Luthor nukes the San Andreas Fault. No need for an actual fight at all, no need for the plot to revolve around Superman's survival.

            I figure that if Superman can fly at the speed of light and carry a ballistic missile, then you'd need a really interesting plot device to keep the movie from ending in 5 min...something that would stop Superman from doing anything. It definitely would have to be a life threatening device.

          If you consider Superman as the most powerful being and that his most strengthful villain is Doomsday, the movie won't be interesting until your main villain has more qualities than his strength, but Doomsday does not have any other quality, he doesn't even talk, he's just "hate". That's the reason why I've never complained about Doomsday in BvS, even Superman/Doomsday (2007) has only one quarter about Doomsday, because there's nothing to show about Doomsday.

          Contrariwise, Batman is the most powerful being in his own universe and his most strengthful villain is Bane, the movie can be interesting, because his ennemy has a real backstory, he's intelligent, we can almost feel compassion for him.

          Spider-Man 2 has introduced Doc Ock, is he a great villain? I don't think so, but he was amazing in Sam Raimi's movie. So even a movie about The Parasite can be good.

            Do you even know Doomsday? Yeah he started out as a mindless killing machine but over time he gained a ton of backstory, logic to his actions and also gained a fair amount of intelligence what put a new spin on him.

            I know Doomsday from Justice League TAS, Superman/Doomsday (2007), and the most iconic CB about him. If you are referring to his origin story about how evil scientists created him, then it won't fit DCEU because Doomsday = Zod. What I am trying to say is that Superman has more villains than a "Doomsday".

            Yeah he has but Doomsday hasn't been used yet because that thing in BvS was no Doomsday. He also has more then just that Origin, you know there are later stories where he evolves and gains intelligence and the concept of fear because of it, as i've said you only know the mindless Doomsday what killed Superman and some of his origin while not appearing to know the later stories of him what they adapt if they wanted to use him again but with a bit more depth.

            I mean, it's not the only way to make it interesting and it can be about how he will save everyone and not If he will. But the fact that they got rid of his main gimmick so soon cheapens and belittles the character in my eyes. He already died and got resurrected so at a very early stage of this universe, I don't care about him cause he's not the all mighty Superman. He got pierced by some random Superboy test gone wrong lol.

            its more about tone in my opinion. I don't need to have a real genuine fear that the hero might die, i just want it to be intense when it should be, which was my issue with a few MCU movies in the past

      What are you talking about? There's a trillion Superman stories and villains better than Death of Superman and Doomsday that have never had a movie made out of them. The only two Superman villains, sans Doomsday that have been put to film have been Zod and Lex.

    I know his character has been a lot of the cause of the major controversies surrounding the DCEU. However I bear no ill will toward Henry. Pretty much every bad choice or digital mouth can be blamed on poor leadership and direction.

    Suicide squad met expectations and the sequel got greenlit immediately, Wonder Woman met expectations and a sequel got greenlit immediately, fanboys say man of steel met expectations and not a sequel in sight, only talks hmmmm

    What do you guys think would be a new and interesting story that doesn't involve the typical saving the world while a city gets destroyed?

      Even though I would love Brainiac, we already have enough alien invasions at this point. I vote for Metallo. A badly wounded survivor of the Black Zero event gets experimented on and he starts losing his humanity throughout the film. Personal and it keeps the stakes small.

      They should have done it with Scoot McNairy's character, it had a nice set up going for it.

      I'm thinking of a movie roughly based on Last Son, in which kryptonian kid lands on earth and Sups adopts him (either finds him or rescues him from the goverment) since him and Lois can't have kids. Enemies would be Luthor, who's been empowered again and who would be looking to take the kid, as well as a physical threat, like Bizarro maybe.

      Big fights in the phantom zone where Superman is sent by Luthor (who then takes the kid) and maybe a last fight in the artic (to avoid a city big battle) against a Bizarro (?), who could be a Superman clone or the kid's clone, or maybe the kid himself manipulated or mind controled by Luthor, or another enemy who got out of the phantom zone along with Superman.

      Sounds crazy and maybe a little bit Logan-ish, but they could find a way to make it work. It would also give plently of room to explore Superman's feelings/emotions/morals and also his relationship with Lois.

      I think borrowing from the 1986-ish Man of Steel comic series would be good. Here we get lots of flashbacks of Superman's first encounters with Lex and Bizzaro, all to show how important Superman is to the world. However, at the same time it also shows the personal sacrifices of those dearest to him when he puts on the cape and goes flying off.

      I would also like it if they weaved in the 'Our Special Day' story which focuses on his relationship and anniversary with Lois...and how being a superhero interferes.

      I think the two stories, although done in different time periods and by different writers, would work together and really show how hard it is to live like a human, and yet be a superhero. Something we haven't seen yet in the DCEU.

      I have three ideas for MoS 2:

      - First idea: The movie would be a mystery in which Superman would try to protect the billionaire Morgan Edge from a mysterious killer know as Toyman, but as the story progress, Superman discovers that the Toyman is not a psychopat killer but, actually, just a victim of Edge illegal actions. In the end, Edge would be arrested and Superman would defeated Toyman in battle against his giant robot.
      - Second ideia : The movie would be adaptation of the classic "Superman vs Elite" and would serve to showcase how Superman changed from the first movie, with him fighting against the Elite, a group of anti-heroes who consider themselves as judge, jury and executioner.
      - Third Idea: The villain would be Brainiac and he would come to colect the cities of Earth and destroy the planet. To prevent Superman from interfering with his plans, Brainiac would block the sun rays, converting them into red sun rays, taking Superman's powers away. Without his powers it would be up to Superman, with the help of his allies (like wonder woman and cyborg), to find a way to recuperate his powers, defeat brainiac and save the planet.

        I like the 3rd one with Brainiac blocking the sun rays. Sounds like a very interesting way to complicate things for Superman.

      Give the villain the ability to kill the superheroes with the snap of a finger. It worked real well in IW. Most of the heroes vanished into thin air. So did Nick Fury but not before he was able to text Ms Marvel.

    The fact that another solo Superman movie is still barely in negotiations five years after MoS is so disconcerting. Superman is supposed to be the spearhead of the DCU and he's treated like a second-class citizen.

    WB just make the Superman movie already. The waiting game is getting tiresome.

    Hope they opt for a character-driven story here. His great attribute is his humanity. Man of Steel offered a glimpse of it before going the Snyder route of mindless mayhem. All-star Superman for example would be a great direction and veer away from a brainless slugfest

      To be fair, the entire movie is "the Snyder route", so whatever glimpses of humanity you saw in MoS can also be attributed to him.

      That is exactly what Man of Steel (and BvS) was though, more character-driven than your usual comic-book movie.

        That was the idea for both movies, sure. And I don't think Snyder was wrong about the direction he wanted to take it. Man of Steel was a good start but BvS was case and point as to Snyder's biggest flaw. Incredible ideas undone by directionless execution. He should have been the producer and visionary, leave the directing and actual filmmaking to others.

        If MoS and BvS is your standard for character driven stories, hats off to you. But they do not reach mine. My answer to you then would be I want something similar to both movies but much, much, much, much, much, much better.

    i like the idea of him being more involved with Man of Steel 2. The guy is so passionate about the character and I feel he has a good idea of what his version should be and where it should go next.

    Who cares...really tho, who cares? Justice League made the least out of all the DCEU films (Avengers made over $2 billion), as much as I want to see Henry wear the suit as he's my favorite Superman, apparently audiences aren't asking for it (thanks WB, insert overly dramatic eyeroll)

      I can completely understand that but I truly believe that solo movies are the way to go from here on out. They may not do as well as Marvel's because of the DCEU stigma from its event movies but gradually if they are good enough they will start to win more and more people back! :)

    Fingers crossed that we do get a SOLO Superman sequel! Henry Cavill is way too good for this role to just let him leave! I'm really... hopeful... that the solo movies are gonna be better! :P

    Here’s what Christopher McQuarrie said when asked about doing a Superman film.
    "Henry Cavill knows what it would be like. We had a a lot of time hanging out on set, and Henry's a huge fan of Superman. I can't help but talk story to people, so he told me his take on Superman and I thought it was really great, and I gave him my two cents. The tweet you're referring to is somebody asked 'Would you do it?' and I said 'Hey, they know where to find me.' Nobody's asked, but you know..." If you want a director that can do science fiction (Edge of Tomorrow), action and big set pieces with a heroic lead (only director to film two Mission Impossible films). He’s a director that could do a fantastic Braniac film. I would love to see those two working together!

      Just one correction it was Doug Liman that did Edge Of Tomorrow or (Live. Die. Repeat). He was attached to JL: Dark as well but decided not to do it.

      McQuarrie has done the two Jack Reacher films and I think also wrote the script for the Usual Suspects.

        I stand corrected. He was writer for Edge of Tomorrow and not director and he was a producer for the second Jack Reacher film. But yes he did also write Usual Suspects. The dude can write!

    Just do it, WB. Without more modern Superman solo movies, future of DCEU looks bleak. MAN OF STEEL 2 should be called "SUPERMAN UNCHAINED" Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation ) has been talking about MOS 2 with Henry. I think Chris is a fine storyteller. MOS 1 is the best DCU movie and despite the CGI moustache scenario, Superman was the best part of JL. WB must build on it quickly. And we don't need kiddy MCU movies. MCU is already providing that kiddy soup to the consumers. WB/DC gotta do things differently to stay in this market. Let's get Brainiac and Bizarro/Cyborg Superman/Eradicator/Darkseid/Mongul. Audiences are tired of watching Luthor and Zod. Keep Luthor as a side character. AND JUST DO IT!

    They should hire someone like Brad Bird or Peter Jackson for MoS sequel. These guys could really make a grand comeback for the sadistic Superman of Zack Snyder.
