Cathy Yan to direct Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn "girl gang" movie 'Birds of Prey'

Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn spinoff has found its director.

Deadline is reporting that while a deal hasn't been signed yet, Cathy Yan is Warner Bros. and Robbie's choice to direct the movie. They were impressed by her pitch and Robbie wanted a female director for the project. While Yan has just one movie on her résumé, Dead Pigs, it won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance earlier this year.

The "girl gang" movie will be based on the Birds of Prey comics, though the other female heroes and villains that will be joining Harley Quinn are not yet confirmed. The comics have featured characters like Batgirl, Catwoman, Black Canary, and Huntress.

The script is from Transformers: Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, who just got hired to write Batgirl as well. Margot Robbie is producing the movie via her production company, LuckyChap.

Robbie has been developing movies for Harley Quinn for years now, including Gotham City Sirens with Suicide Squad director David Ayer. It seems like Birds of Prey won out between the two.

Deadline says Birds of Prey is expected to start production at the end of the year, or early 2019 at the latest.

    There’s a generation of people that grew up with Shazam on television the same way they did WW77 and Batman66 when they were kids, who are now parents and will take their children to see this film. So, yes, there is an audience for this film.

  Man of Steel didn't underperform. It was also the most successful Superman movie in 40 years. And BvS made $870 million, it only "underperformed" compared to unrealistic expectations of angry fanboys. Objectively it was a great financial success.

        That was only production budget.It's marketing budget was over $150 million.It did bomb and that's why we till this day haven't heard anything about MOS2.There is a reason that they had to involve their most popular superheros Batman in the follow up and spend three years on BvS development.It failed to make even it's investment back on box office.

    You are comparing two new and unknown IPs compared to one that has been done and redone a dozen times a dozen ways. No one has any preconceived ideas of who dr strange or star lord are. Everyone has THEIR superman or Batman and that causes it to become even harder to satisfy the fan base. Nolan was an anomaly pulled out of a hat by a genius.

  Film making is a risk no matter how many films your director has made. As a production company, you have to believe in your directors creative vision(which I read that her super creative pitch was a big reason they went with her) and hope that you have hired strong managers who can keep a tight ship on set. If those things are in place, it’s hard to make a bad film.

As much as I love Harley in comic book and animated form, she just doesn't work in film. I hate this character. She is as useless and completely non-believable as Black Widow trying to convince us she can fight giant aliens with two hand pistols.
I'd much rather have them develop a Zatanna or Huntress movie before shoving a nonsense film about a chick with a baseball bat that seemingly can take on a room full of men with guns.

  Well said. Plus Harley is kind of like the female version of Deadpool in the comics, albeit a little crazier at times. So far, that has not translated to film. Zoomed-in shots of her tits and ass, and some bad jokes does not make for a proper Harley. WB acting like tween boys.

  You know comics aren’t meant to be fully adapted to a movie. Some things just don’t work on the big screen. There is nothing wrong with taking a beloved character and making it more badass and compelling. Plus this is a gang movie.

  see what I dont think most people understand about Suicide Squad is that traditionally there is a certain humor to it. Have you ever asked yourself why they would get a guy who can throw boomerangs or a girl with a bat or a "man who can climb anything" to go on these dangerous missions and end up going head to head with something like the enchantress? Well good. Because thats quite literally what its supposed to be. Its a bunch of goofy misfit type bad guy characters that are sent on these over the top dangerous missions and fight crazy threats some times. They are supposed to seem highly unqualified for the job because they are expendable. But Waller will also put some heavy hitters in the team to even things out and give them something of a chance at actually succeeding.

    I never said any of that was not the case. The SS movie was horrible. David Ayer is horrible. You are talking about comic books while i am talking about how it was translated to film. It did not work. But because of money they are making a sequel.
    I really hope that Robbie and her female group of writers and directors realize what wa was wrong with it and fix it. Make a fucking great movie.
    SS2 however, i have zero hope and expectations for that. EVERY character in that film was horrible. Not just Harley.

A horrible version of Killer Croc (who i love) Washed up Will Smith, Harley, who was a psychiatrist that gets tortured by Joker then all of a sudden becomes a traipse artist, Boomerang (shall i even start) Enchantress (should i even start).....

I couldn't even believe how royally they f*cked him up and made him into some crackhead gangster with accessories sold separately. Every line was forced overacting. His laugh even felt contrived. Sounds great so far. I'd rather a Birds of Pretty over Joker/Harley and or Sirens. Just watched Annihilation last night which is amazing. The dynamic between the mostly female cast was done very well. Prey will certainly be more cheery than Annihilation but it's something to consider taking inspiration from.

  Since Matt Reeves said he's finalized the story for The Batman and is working on the script, I'm thinking that means they now know which characters he has a hold on and which will be free for other films (or the ones for which he will need to collaborate on the casting).

This is a ridiculous cash-grab. They don't care about the Birds of Prey at all. If they did, Harley Quinn wouldn't be involved at all. HARLEY QUINN IS A CRIMINAL.     Are you talking about the live action show? Harley wasn't a member, she was the Big Bad (as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, keeping her crazy under wraps for most of the series). The BoP were Oracle, Huntress, and Black Canary Jr., with Ian Abercrombie as Alfred.

  Where in the article does it say Harley Quinn is not a criminal and instead a member of the Birds of Prey? All that's said is the movie is based on a Birds of Prey comic, and they could very well (and most likely) be fighting the Sirens, who are Harley, Catwoman and Poison Ivy.

        well we don't know "exactly" what role she will play. I still think its possible she could end up being the villain. But either I believe she has done things with the BoP before. I could see her being like a merc for hire(sort of like she is in the comics currently. Or she was a few issues ago at least) and they have to go into gotham's underbelly to find and recruit her or something. Then she just ends up being the wild crazy anti hero of the group. Could work. Margot seems to be heavily involved with this and she seems to have familiarized herself a lot with all of these comics and I do have a fair bit of trust in her. We'll see

  Harley hasn't been a straight up criminal since Morrison shot the Joker in 2009-2010. After her limited development with J, she moved on to become a stronger independent force with her own goals and motivation (much like what happened to Grayson.) A lot of her capabilities come from her time spent at the core three of the Suicide Squad for nearly ten years, and her career membership of the Sirens and aid of the Batfamily and The Birds of Prey.
  Characters, much like people, evolve. The you in highschool or in that toxic relationship isn't the same you now. Harley is not defined by her origins. You should check her out sometimes.

For some reason, getting a female director for this project, makes me less worried.😼 I guess the idea is to combine the two iconic Gotham girl gangs, while using the cooler team name for the movie's title? Probably have them fight, and then team-up. There'd be a lot of characters to introduce. But with good writing and direction, it can be done organically, and incorporated into a cohesive story.   Imagine if WB can turn things around and we get a Justice League vs. Suicide Squad vs. Birds of Prey movie, like DC's version of Infinity War (or, if they're feeling cheeky, just make Darkseid War, Forever Evil, or JLvSS).
  There's so much rich history in the DC universe; it's a shame they're squandering it right now.

I'm glad they're finally making a move on this film. Say what you will about the DCEU, but female characters are the one thing that they've been pretty much excelling in. Making a film full of female characters, by a female director and female writer gives DC an edge over Marvel.

It makes sense to combine Birds of Prey and Sirens in one movie, if it is a success they can always have sequels focusing on each team.

This is a really cool story. They way these situations always go is, the studio humors the actress by doing a few drafts of her project, then they greenlight movies by the same old guys and tell the actress her script didn’t work.
But Margot Robbie wasn’t playing that game. She went out and got a woman who’d put three scripts on the Black List. And Christina Hodson shocked the world (including me) by getting Birds of Prey greenlit. And the situation now called for the woman who created Batgirl in BoP to write Batgirl. So the studio-appointed old guy who screwed up the Justice League reshoots and was somehow still writing Batgirl saw the train coming and decided to call a press conference to announce that it was too hard to come up with a story for Batgirl.
So now you have a fun girl-power Harley/Batgirl movie written by a woman, and Batgirl being written by a woman, and Birds of Prey directed by a woman, because Margot Robbie didn’t feel like playing the same old studio game. There truly are heroes in this world, including some who play villains for fun.

Girl Gang sounds gay as hell! And I wonder how Hollywood would react if every male star started requesting only male directors for their films. Anyways, this just goes to show how WB is sooooooo freaking clueless when it comes to their property!

So what movies are actually in development, which are in stand by, which are "cancelled"? (besides Aquaman and Shazam obviously)

    No way, DC heroes are irrelevant. If Disney wants to stay successful, better keep using the iconic superheroes of today, that are Ironman and Captain America. No more capes.
