Rumor: 'Flashpoint' is dead, 'The Flash' likely to become a solo movie again

The Flash was announced all the way back in October of 2014, but it's been through a lot of changes since then. Multiple directors have come and gone, and then last year at Comic-Con Warner Bros. announced that the movie would be Flashpoint. If it was anything like the comic with the same name, it would have included many Justice League characters as well. But after that movie bombed last year, it seems like Warner Bros. isn't in a rush to make a big team up movie again.

Last month The Hollywood Reporter hinted that Flashpoint was going in a different direction, and over the last couple of weeks The Wrap reporter Umberto Gonzalez has tweeted emojis in response to the movie, strongly hinting that it was dead. But today Umberto posted another tweet, practically saying "Flashpoint is dead" with an Avengers: Infinity War meme of Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Flashpoint Batman:

Flashpoint being dead and The Flash getting a proper solo movie makes a lot of sense after Justice League. With Game Night directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein officially signed on for The Flash, they probably have their own ideas they want to bring to the table.

  Wow, that's definitely Batman shape. I would not mind Affleck as Batman really, I liked him in BvS a lot and somewhat in JL, except for the fact they made him a bit of a wimp. Get him a good script and it will be great.

  He looks much better there then he did in the JL reshoots, would be a nice surprise if he's put that back on for a solo Batman film what will be announced at this years comic con for a release of next year.

  He could just be taking up working out to keep himself busy. I doubt he's in a rush to throw on the cape and cowl again, and given the divisiveness of both his outings as Batman, I can't say I blame him.

  Thank you for sharing this. To me this is awesome, hopeful, news. We don't need a young Batman. We will never get Nightwing, Batman Beyond, etc. if we don't continue with a Batman that has been Batman for 20 years. No need to re-boot just course correct. I am really hoping these idiots have finally learned their lesson. Affleck is my Batman, and I hope that is what we get, with Batman action scenes like BvS not JL. No one can say that Batman was not the shit. Accept for the, well you know, the stuff that some people did not like.

If this is true then I'm all for this. I'm part of that small group of people who thinks Warner Bros can still turn this around with this current cast and continuity. Yes, even with Jesse Eisenberg as Lex and Jared Leto as Joker. It'll take a lot of work but they can get there. And as much as I would of loved to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Flashpoitn Batman, I think it's too soon for a Flashpoint movie.

  If they toned down Eisenberg as Lex and gave us more of the Lex from JL i would actually be ok with him staying and appearing in more films. Leto would have to completely change how he plays the Joker to stay though, thankfully The Joker was barely in SS so him having a different look and feel would be easy to do in a solo Batman film.

        He was definitely better in Jl, but he's just not fit for the role. He's way too young, skinny as hell, and doesn't have that imposing look. Brian Cranston was the perfect candidate, idk why snyder chose eisenberg instead, that was a big mistake.

        No, i haven't yet. I've been trying to watch that show for years now. I think ive only watched 2 episode of the first season years ago(you can laugh at me now). I heard its one of the best shows.

        Basically my joke was that Cranston's character in BB has an alias what's Hisenberg so as you can tell now the joke was Snyder got the names mixed up when he heard people wanted that Hisenberg guy for Lex.
        As for the show well its incredible, easily one of the best acted shows out there and the storytelling is immense. I highly recommend it obviously haha.

        Saw it opening night and again earlier this week and i'm planning on seeing it again tomorrow haha. Not my favorite MCU movie but easily my favorite Avengers movie, Thanos is easily one of the best comic book villains though.

        Luthor doesn't like Superman because Superman can ruins his plans, but as a side story, I prefer to see a Luthor who hates God (because God was not protecting him by his abuse father, so God must not exist and he desires to prove that Superman is a fraud, you know the story) than an old grandpa who feels jealousy because Superman is too perfect for him.

        The false god thing from BvS was too much. Could have just been a young philantropist who wants to have the spotlight because he sees himself as the face of the future and Superman ruins that for him. So, young and jealous basically.

        Lex doesn’t have to be physically imposing. It’s more fitting for his character - the antithesis of Superman and someone whose strength is in his mind, not his body - to be scrawny, anyway. Plus, he has been portrayed with skinny features in the comics, too. And he’s only one year younger than Henry Cavill. Give the guy a break.

        I enjoyed Jesse's manic Lex, but I was secretly hoping it was all just an act so he could make a plea for insanity, then demonstrate a miraculous recovery that Superman and Batman are both highly skeptical of, leading to the more mature, confident style of Lex we know and love who is a calm, sneaky, quietly arrogant manipulator. The type who would run for Mayor, or even eventually President.
        Also, Ninja didn't say you can't have an opinion. He's just giving his opinion of your opinion. ;p lol

        Jesse does look pretty young, yeah, I'll give you that. It bothered me when he was first cast, too. I used to be anti-Jesse, too, believe it or not :P But ultimately, something like that should not matter much as long as the performance and characterization can make up for it, and especially not considering whether he "looks" young or not, he actually is the right age.
        As for not looking like Lex, I beg to differ.         Except you did mention his skinniness. But as for being intimidating as a person, he surely was; take the red capes scene, for example. He played his Lex as a massive intellect and control freak keeping a facade of charisma and composure while actually on the edge of straight up murdering you. I found his portrayal incredibly unnerving, I was definitely intimidated. Seeing the full extent of his dangerous madness in his blowing up the Senate and the photos he took of Martha when she was gagged really made it even worse.
        You’re not simply sharing a completely subjective thing like your favorite color which does not affect your view of the movie and you would not blame others for disagreeing with in any way; you are making an argument. You assert a claim of fact which is likely based on fairly reasonable things you likely believe are objective measures of what the character is supposed to be and which you would likely use to defend your position and argue others with. I am simply pointing out what I perceive to be a flawed view based on unfair criticisms, which is not productive to continue propagating. None of this is wrong, and I hope you understand that I don’t want to disrespect you as a person, but come on, give the guy a break :P
        As for “mature,” BvS is his origin story, basically. He isn’t the full Lex until after he gets past his beginnings. He can’t be fully developed right from the get-go. Just like Batman in BB or Superman in the DCEU. Other characters have multi-movie arcs, too, like WW and Batman. This just shows us him getting there, just like MoS and BvS did for Supes.

        I agree with that, but his performance in Bvs wasnt bad at all, it just wasn't the luthor people fell in love with, it felt more like enigma.
        Im sorry, but the only similarities eisenberg has with lex, is the bald head, other than that, theres no resemblance at all. He does look like the long hair version of lex though, but thats not the lex people care or love as a character, nobody cares about that interpretation of lex when he had red hair and was a mad scientist.

        He’s not quite as cool, calm, and collected in BvS as we know him to be quite yet, no, but again, this is his first step into that; he’s not fully formed yet, hence the long red hair. I’m glad we can agree that his performance for the most part is not a problem (though I can sympathize with the common complaint about his ticks - but those are not entirely fair to hold against him or the movie, either, since they make sense given he is descending into madness through the film [and they seem to progressively get worse accordingly] and I don’t think they’re going to stay there too prominently in future movies), but even with his development into the Lex we all know and love (paralleling Superman’s own development, too) only just starting in that movie, he is still very much Lex at his core. He is an egomaniacal genius and master manipulator who puts on a charismatic front while he is in control of every situation, and only loses his cool once he loses that control. Sounds pretty good for Lex to me. There may be some superficial similarities, but Lex and his MO and motives differ from Nigma on a fundamental level.
        Now I just think you didn’t look at the images I included in my last comment. There is a fairly strong resemblance, even in the faces he makes! I would argue that in some ways he has a similar facial structure indeed, but with perhaps rounder features, whereas the comic art might be a bit sharper. But what you also have to realize most of the difference comes from the fact that this is an actual human face in real life, versus a drawing in a comicbook. And that’s what I hoped to help illustrate with the picture of Jesse’s Lex in comicbook form at the end there; I cannot imagine that if we simply took off the hair from that picture that not every single person would be able to immediately identify that character as Lex Luthor. And yet that is modeled after Jesse’s face. So clearly he does look pretty good as Lex Luthor, after all. Heck, I could perhaps go as far as to say he looks more like Lex Luthor than Christian Bale looks like Bruce Wayne, to be honest, and yet I bet there weren’t a lot of complaints about that coming from your end for TDK Trilogy. ...or do you not like TDK Trilogy? I can never remember who on this site it was who said that for sure...
        Furthermore, you just toppled your own argument when you admitted he does look like long-haired Lex, because that’s still Lex. How could someone look like a character and yet at the same time not look like that same character? The presence or the lack of hair doesn’t change the appearance of any other part of the body, lol.
        As for no one caring, excuse me, but I find that Superman: Birthright as a kind of origin story for Lex provides some meaningful insights into his character, so I wouldn’t say “no one” cares, lol, sorry bud. But even if that were true, the first step in the character’s story is a fair thing to cover, whether or not it may be as interesting/exciting/whatever as the final step, which we are promised in the future either way.

        I understand that approach as well, and it’s a fair one, but like I said, it still does not work as well with his antithetical nature to Superman or the fact that his strength is still ultimately in his mind. Also, Lex in the history of comics has off and on occasionally struggled with some very shallow motivations, and I would say that certainly falls under that category. The whole “he’s jealous of Superman” thing is just too simplistic and immature. I much prefer the angle they used for BvS, in which he is both pathologically distrustful of anyone with power and at the same time also obsessed with achieving all that power for himself, because no one else can be trusted with it, and that makes him have a psychological NEED to express his hatred for Superman, who is essentially the earthly representation of God, through destroying him or his image. And it makes sense that for a man like Lex, power would be in the form of knowledge and control than anything else.

      Eisenberg while terrible as Lex at least gave a decent performance, if his name was The Riddler in the film i would loved him in it. Leto though was just terrible, i don't think the deleted scenes with him would make a difference as performance wise he was bad whats annoying as i like him as an actor and was hyped for him as The Joker.

It took them 4 years to realize Flashpoint was a stupid idea, wow.
I don't really care either way. I really dislike this cinematic universe. It'll take at least 3-4 really good movies in a row to change my mind.

    Fair enough. Officially, it was announced in 2017. But it was in development since 2014 and 2 directors dropped out due to creative differences which makes me believe they were pushing for flashpoint that whole time

      i guess its possible since we don't know "Exactly" what hjappened but I really dont think that was the case. The rumors were that Seth Graham Smith and Rick's visions were basically too dark/too edgy. Seth wanted it to be a dark movie with elements of horror and Rick wanted there to be themes of social/political issues involving race and such. My assumption was that they changed it to flashpoint because they wanted a soft reboot since they clearly decided some time during the post production of JL that they no longer wanted to follow that vision. It made sense to me that they would go this route. But a flashpoint movie without the context of the bad reception to BvS(thus causing a shift in WB's approach to this franchise) just doesn't make any sense to me. Though I suppose it is "possible" that they did in fact want to go this route because originally the idea was that each character would get only one standalone movie. So It would make sense that they would want the flash film to sort of be the "ultimate" flash film. Still, I do not personally think that is the case.

        Oh, ok. I had no idea about the horror and political themes. That sounds super interesting though. Was that something they said in interviews or where did the rumors come out from? I'd love a political Flash film for sure. But yeah, as you said, we won't know, at least for a while. Thanks for the clarification though. I stand corrected

        i dont remember where exactly they came from. But I do remember that when Rick left the project, he did mention that his take was too "edgy" for the studio. There was also the fact that he took a jab at Justice League when Black Panther made way more money than it. And combined with the fact that Rick's films typically deal with such social issues, the rumors started to make sense. Not to mention Cyborg was also going to featured in the movie.

        We'll never know. But at least we can agree that not doing Flashpoint is a step in the right direction right? It'd be nice to find some common ground

        the only reason I defended the decision was because, since WB was clearly not interested in continuing the story laid out under the Snyder era, it would have been a good idea to do a soft reboot of sort. Not even starting over. Just resetting the timeline and leaving it ambiguous as to what may or may not have happened prior to FP. This would have removed a lot of baggage which would have been good I think. Just to clean things up and make sure future directors and such are not shackled by certain things.

the only reason I supported Flashpoint was because clearly they don't seem to want to follow the original plan set by the Snyder era anymore. So now they have all this baggage. A little cleanup wouldn't have hurt imo.

Good as Flashpoint was too soon and not wanted or needed. Now give us The Flash vs The Rogues while exploring Barry as a character (while making him more like the Barry we know from the comics), his relationship with Iris and his Dad while giving us hints and set up for Thawne for a sequel if it happens. Also give us a speed feat on the level of what Fox does for Quicksilver in the X-Men films as well giving us a new better suit.

  rogues just dont seem interesting enough to warrant a movie based around them. In an ideal world, sure. But we have had the tv show tackling so much of the flash mythology already and, as you said, those quicksilver scenes making our favorite speedster look bad. I would prefer they just do to straight to RF since they already introduced flash in JL and by the time this movie comes out he will have been flash for several years in universe. It would benefit this movie greatly if there is an all out epic speedster battle in it imo

    The Rogues are fantastic though and the team is pretty unique compared to most villain team ups and are easily up there with the best of Flash villains. Captain Cold, Golden Glider, Mirror Master, Weather Wizard and Captain Boomerang would be a great line up for the team and would be different then what we usually see as villains in super hero films. Also The Flash TV show has never really explored The Rogues, yeah we have seen them separately but never as a full team sadly and now that Cold is dead and Heatwave now a good guy its clearly never never going to happen.

      Well The Rogues have had plenty of members over the years, i just went with a classic line up minus Heatwave because 6 would be too many for the film. Hell take out Weather Wizard or Boomerang and just have 4 members if 5 is too many.

It's for the best, the point of Flashpoint in the comics was seeing beloved heroic characters well established acting like villains, that doesn't have a point in the DCEU because virtually no character has been well established besides WW, Superman and maybe Batman so people would not care seeing them acting different, they should focus on a origin movie and leave Flashpoint for a Third film to close the trilogy.

  By the time Flashpoint would've come out Aquaman, Shazam, and Wonder Woman 2 would've already released. All those characters are in Flashpoint and audiences would've recognised them.

    Yes but i would still wait until the characters gain a little more background and besides in you do Flashpoint any sequel would be inferior in scope because Flashpoint is one of flash biggest storylines.

Not necessarily a loss, although I wouldn't mind if they tackle this storyline sometime into the future (I still think Morgan as Flashpoint Batman could be nuts!)

That's the right move. The first Flash movie shouldn't be Flashpoint. We need solo movies for all JL members, where their main antagonists are also establish. The Flashpoint should be the 2nd Flash movie, even after a possible JL sequel (JL vs Legion of Doom?).

As I've said in previous posts, Ezra Miller is not my favorite choice for the Flash, because he looks too high instead of the fast-talking punchliner guy I was expecting. But it doesn't matter, I dig it and he's a really appreciated actor, I would be happy to see if he improves as Flash. Now what you are praying for by replacing him, it's literally stopping DC movies because recasting is not a choice from there. Plus by those images, you want a blond dude (actor's talent may not be your requirement) bulkier than Superman, wake up, not gonna happen.

        Marvel is at the top because people like comedy movies and DC heroes like the Tritinity who have started the DCEU are not comedy characters. That's why movies like Suicide Squad, even if they are average, are so appealing. How Gardians of the Galaxy are accurate? We don't know them and so we don't care how they are accurate, they're just too funny.

        TDK is the renaissance of Batman, post-Schumacher saga reborn from its ashes. TDK was at top in an era were MCU hadn't adopted comedy yet and had only the first Iron Man and Avengers as good movies from their "Phase One".
        BvS has Batman in its title, but it's just a reboot with new actors, new faces, people don't like reboots so quickly. Look at The Amazing Spiderman lol, even Spider-Man: Homecoming would not have worked as good if Robert Downey Jr wasn't in it.
        Even if someone make the movie of your dreams with a reboot, even if the movie is OK, your movie won't work.

        It's not bunch of excuses, these are real facts. Most people didn't like The Amazing Spiderman, not because it's a bad movie, but it's an origin movie destined to the same generation of people who have already seen Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 5 years before.
        Your Logan example is bad, because Logan is not a reboot, Logan is the last movie with Hugh Jackman involved in it. Wait for a solo Wolverine reboot with another actor, it will bomb, unless Robert Downey Jr is involved as Iron Man lol.

        The examples you're giving are terrible. The Amazing Spider-Man was a far cry from Spider-Man (2002). They werent' even close. I personally thought the movie sucked. The reason most reboots fail is because they are inferior to the originals.
        Why was TDK movies more successful than Burton/Schumacher movies? Because they were better. Why wasn't BvS? Because it was terrible. If Matt Reeves makes an amazing Batman movie it will be highly successful. That's they way it works. Doing a reboot only means you have a bar to surpass.
        It's amazing that you still haven't figured out that, good quality = higher chance of success, lol. But like I said, you're just making excuses. X-Men movies and TDK are all the proof you need to know that people can embrace non comedic CBM's.

        Those movies are bad really movies (some people even love them), but those movies are not acclaimed by all because they are in the "less than 10 years reboot with new actors" category. Because you have asked for it, here you have all those superhero movies in this category:
        - Batman Returns (1992) => Batman Forever (1995)
        - Hulk (2003) => The Incredible Hulk (2008)
        - The Punisher (2004) => Punisher: War Zone (2008)
        - Fantastic Four 2 (2007) => Fantastic Four (2015)
        - Spider-Man 3 (2007) => The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
        - The Dark Knight Rises (2012) => BvS (2016)
        X-Men movies are NOT reboot, they are using the same actors since the beginning, they have perfectly made the transition with the younger generation in Days of the Future Past. This younger generation may battle remaining bad guys (like Galactus or Mr Sinister), and then its finished, Fox will probably sell itself to Disney.
        You think you're intelligent because you're comparing Nolan movies with Schumacher's toy-seller-movies, but there were superior movies with Burton before, and even during the Nolan era, a lot of people prefered Burton movies (nostalgia factor).

    in all honesty that was the one thing that bugged me about him visually. Not the color, but the fact that he didn't do anything with his hair. Barry is typically a well groomed person so I personally would have had him comb it to the side or something instead of just being sort of matted down like it was. Maybe that was supposed to be representative of him being an introvert and not having much concern over his physical appearance. Still, he looked better in that pic Snyder released a while back where he had glasses.

Another smart move from WB. Flashpoint is too soon. I think they might have actually learned, and are not going to rush things. Anyways, ComiCon will be very interesting this year for the DCEU. Can't wait to hear the movie slates coming up.

Also, if no Flashpoint...what is going on with Batman and Affleck? Is he going to reprise his role or not, if not any rumors to who the next Batman will be....I like all these recent news, but it raises more questions than answers.

    I agree, if he decides to leave they should not try to find an in-universe explanation, they should just bring the new guy and that's it, I can't even begin to conceive how they would explain the fact that only Batman appareance changed....the character is far bigger than any actor who was played him no matter how good he was in the role.

When they brought these guys in, I had a feeling that they were heading back towards the original Lord-Miller direction. Just grab a few Rogues and do a straight action-adventure-comedy that's largely a movie version of Season 1 of the TV show. They're obviously slapping Barry's name on DCAU Wally's personality anyway, and that's a perfect combination for that kind of film. Hopefully Famuyima's original choice for Iris is still willing to be on board.

If that´s true, I would be relieved. It is way too soon for a flashpoint movie, Barry Allen and all of the elements surrounding his character haven´t even been properly introduced. They really need to do that first.
That would however also mean that any potential soft reboot via flashpoint plans are off the table. Thus despite all assumptions, the DCEU would go on.
Just wondering, how many people on this site would actually prefer a reboot over a continuation of the current universe? I´m just interested in what all of you think about that topic.

  I think, they way the DCEU is build a soft reboot is going to happen in one or the other way. We already have a kind-of-trilogy for Superman, and a old Batman while we haven't seen almost anything for the rest of JL members. I don't think the Flashpoint movie was the right way for the soft reboot. I think a more natural way to recast people would be a "crisis in infinite earths" scenario.
  A hard reboot isn't going to do any good and it is not necessary.

  Nobody ever thought the reboot theory through.😂 People were so focused on how to potentially get rid of Ben Affleck, his grey-haired wig, and the bad perception of MoS, BvS, SS, and JL, that they didn't even consider, that Flashpoint could possibly suck and/or bomb. The Zack Snyder/David Ayer era, are officially a part of DC's legacy. Might as well just embrace it, and try to maybe put some Wite-Out over mistakes that were made, while continuing to move forward. Even the MCU has had to retcon some stuff, gloss over some mistakes, and even recast roles.
  The DCEU just needs more time to bake. More directors, writers, special effects people, and producers, to contribute to it. Specifically with the Flash, I think giving him a new and perhaps cooler looking costume, while making him a little more mature, is how to propel the DCEU's Barry Allen forward.

    Agreed. a hard reboot would probably be the worst thing they could do right now. They already have a foundation, and while it may be shaky, it is a foundation nontheless. If they make quality films from now on (which is possible under the new management) they will hopefully get back up there with Marvel as the tentpoles of the genre. It´s gonna be a long and bumpy road, but I believe they will eventually succeed.

  In the animated Movie they managed to put in some backstory so i dont see the problem there. I never had time to read a lot of dc comics but ive seen almost all animated Movies. So im a Dc fan but maybe closer to a normal audience cause of lack of comics that ive read or didnt read. But even with that background Flashpoint was just one of the best Dc films ive seen so far.

I dont know many people here seem to be happy with no Flashpoint (havent read all comments yet) but imo WB / DC is missing out on the opportunity to give normal audience something "different". When i first saw the Flashpoint animated Movie i was kinda blown away (havent read the comics). The same goes with Crisis on Infinite Wolrds. I dont mind them bringing those movies later BUT ...i have some worries that Marvel will bring out something similar first. Maybe im wrong but Marvel has some Multiverse stories as well i think. If they do it well .....Dc cant bring something similar.

At least for now, I hope Flashpoint is dead. Way too soon for it anyway IMO. I am excited for a solo Flash movie though. I liked Ezra in Justice League. Thought he did a pretty good job with what he was given.

Keep in mind there were no promises it would be a full team up movie featuring any of the various off kilter versions of the jl. Flashpoint only refers to changing the outcome of his mother's murder and subsequent timeline.
That future, much like in the tv series, could still be a standalone.
