'Justice League' ends box office run as the lowest grossing DCEU movie yet

The live action Justice League team in 2017 movie

With Justice League out on Digital HD and Blu-ray as well, its run at the box office has come to an end. Zack Snyder's big superhero team-up movie made $657.9 million worldwide, the lowest of any DC Extended Universe movie yet. For comparison, Marvel's first Avengers movie made $1.5 billion.

The irony in all of this is that Warner Bros. rushed into a shared Justice League universe after Man of Steel underperformed in 2013 with $668 million, in the hopes of getting to that magical billion dollars at the box office. Batman was thrown into the sequel, Batman v Superman, to give it a boost and it worked. That movie made $873.6 million. But then Justice League, which should have made at least a billion dollars, ended up making even less than Man of Steel.

Here's how Justice League ranks against the rest of the DCEU at the worldwide box office:

Batman v Superman - $873.6M
Wonder Woman - $821.8M
Suicide Squad - $746.8M
Man of Steel - $668.0M
Justice League - $657.9M

Now Warner Bros. is restructuring DC Films and the entire studio. Former New Line executive Walter Hamada is now president of DC Films, there's a new VP of production, and some changes have been made at the top of Warner Bros. as well. Hopefully this leads to stronger DC movies for 2018 and beyond. Aquaman sounds pretty awesome.

As long as Kevin Tsujihara and Toby Emmerich are calling the shots, nothing will ever change. Those two are responsible for giving us a half assed product called Justice League.

Is that way Jess Eisenberg has no idea if he will ever play lex again... flash movie was suppose to be released this month.... cyborg movie was suppose to developed.... no news on MoS 2... Jeffery dean Morgan doesn’t know what they are doing with flashpoint and no word on start date or release.... no word on cast and start date of Matt Reeves’ Batman so who knows if Jermey irons will be back.... I enjoyed BvS to a point but to act like it didn’t have an impact of upcoming plans is just blind. The backlash from BvS just about changed everything

        It also cost 100M more to make, and in North America, where the studios see 50% of total ticket sales (other countries they get 25-35%), Wonder Woman made 411M to BvS 333M.

        China is a key market because of the sheer people in there. China rivals the US in tickets sold, so even if a film brings in 100M in China, the studio is still going to see 25M of that, which is more than most countries. Compare that with, let's say France, where the movie might make 40M, and the studio will see roughly 35% of that (14M).

      I disagree. WW had more humor than BvS, but it was still a dark movie. It took place during WWI after all. With JL I think they were trying to make a Marvel movie.

        Yeah, it was more subtle than in the mcu, but the lighter tone was there, it did had dark moments and the story was way more mature than any from the mcu, but still it felt like a totally different tone than from previous dccu movies, even the cinematography was closer to a mcu movie. JL was a rehash of Avengers.

        WW had serious themes as it pertained to Diana learning of the horrors of war in isolated moments (as build up to No Man's Land), but not a dark movie at all.

      If WW was made exactly the same but by Snyder you would no doubt be calling it a masterpiece. End of the day WW is the best DCEU film and is great film loved by millions and millions and the great critical acclaim by critics and audiences and great box office are proof of that.

        That's partly what I'm referring to with the meme. I don't get why so many people are extremely black or white about this stuff. Superhero movie fan culture has become rabid.
        No one's perfect (me included), but the way we treat these movies like they can only be either complete masterpieces or complete trash is so exaggerated and unfair. And then we start eating each other over those extremist opinions.
        I don't expect everyone to agree all the time, and I acknowledge that anyone is capable of being stupid, but we're all fans, even if we have different interests and preferences. The angst and bullying is embarrassing.

        Honestly i'm not as anti Snyder as i appear, i've said a few times i like Man Of Steel, Watchman and even the DC of Sucker Punch and i also love 300 and his Dawn Remake. Its BvS what i really dislike most from his work as for me it takes all the worst aspects of MoS and makes them worse along with adding more, it can't even give us a great Superman action scene what stands along side his MoS action scenes.

        One of the failings of the DCEU, to me, is the constant need to try to correct course on every complaint from previous films.
        Some things people complained about with Superman Returns were the lack of action or fight scenes, being too derivative of Christopher Reeve, and the inability to take it seriously.
        Man of Steel is a response to all of this, which I feel is a good thing. Most people don't agree though, and all the things the majority previously moaned about in Returns they suddenly were mad MoS course corrected on as was previously demanded.
        So now we have people complaining in the polar opposite direction, about too much action ("destruction porn" lol), too much seriousness, and Henry's Supes not being close enough to Christopher Reeve.
        That's just one example. We all know how JL turned out as an over-reaction to fan feedback: Nobody seems like it.
        You can't win by bending over backwards in every direction like that. There has to be a healthy, smooth balance that everyone can look at and say, "Hey, that leans my way at least somewhat".
        This is what Marvel struck almost perfectly, and the resulting hype train covers up any frustrations from comic purists who are upset about concessions made to appeal to the wider audience.
        If DC can zero in on that, I think they'll be fine, but there's a lot of negative baggage no matter what they choose to do right now, so I feel worried...

        I think the biggest problem starting out was WB wanted to re-capture that Nolan feel, they thought his "real world" take could work on Superman and everyone else, now while i understand some like that take on Superman (i didn't mind it in MoS) it didn't go down well with the GA so MoS under-performed, wanting to get more people watching they put in Batman but Snyder's take on all that was really diverse if i'm being kind so BvS under-performed and by the time JL happened the GA had just giving up. SS and WW done well but they were their own thing and WW had amazing marketing and amazing word of mouth and fantastic reviews something what BvS lacked, i stand by my statement that JL was doomed even if it was a full Snyder vision film as the GA just wasn't interested in JL.
        Looking at Superman Returns, i think a more action heavy sequel with Zod or Doomsday (SM doesn't die if they used him) but with a tone whats like Donner but not as cheesy and more modern could have done really well and been a mega hit.

        Today, I think your idea for a Superman Returns sequel would go over great. Back then, word of mouth seemed to be wishing for something like Man of Steel - at least from my observational experience.
        People wanted "boring" Superman to be more interesting, able to be taken seriously, and relatable like Batman, so that's what we got. The response was this big rage mob that wants Christopher Reeve back after complaining all these years about Superman being a corny, squeaky-clean boy scout.
        Personally, I like both flavors of Superman. I'm open to interpretation. I like Teen Titans, but I also like Teen Titans Go. lol :x Hope I don't get murdered for saying that. I prefer the serious versions in both cases, but that doesn't make me hate or resent the lighter versions.
        Better yet, I like both Burton's Batman and Nolan's Batman, even though both differ from the comics (and each other) quite a lot - though they, and Snyder's, also mirror the comics a lot in other ways that I feel are dismissed in favor of focusing on the differences.
        Another case of "Why can't we all just get along?"
        All that said, I fully agree with you that JL would still be poorly received if Snyder weren't canned and Whedon brought in. I think that, to me, it would be a more meaningful, fulfilling movie for it, but I know for a fact that the general audience simply doesn't share my tastes or interests.
        I'm okay with that, and I enjoy superhero movies that don't cater specifically to my selfish desires, but I do think Snyder should have been able to complete his project, and let us fans either enjoy it or hate it, and then move on from his vision into something more widely enjoyed.
        Pulling the rug out from under the movie halfway through was just such horrible PR, and it disjointed the movie both as a singular entity and as a sequel to BvS. They should've let him finish the trilogy and then calmly hand the torch off to someone else who would make something more friendly to wider audience demands.
        That would have left Snyder fans happy, and Snyder detractors relieved to be moving on.
        No controversy; smooth transition. We might have even gotten Whedon's Batgirl movie (which I was looking forward to) that way. :'(

        That odd thing is Marvel has had such great success with multiple Directors and it's only because they are making better smarter decisions all through the film process unlike WB. Yeah I'm worried I honestly think Aquaman will be mediocre at best because of the decrepit JL and people won't schell out the bucks for writing dialog like him saying "My Man" just who ok'd that crap he wasn't locked in a cave from some 80's sitcom I cringed when I heard the charechar say that. Yet it speaks loud to the small things that are a symptom of a larger illness.

        I think they really have a very well coordinated team of writers. In terms of production, Marvel movies became extremely efficient.
        I hold some hope for Aquaman just because of the director.

      So what are you saying? What style is the DCEU? Besides unsuccessful. Totaling up all the DC movies going back to the 80's I think 18 total films total some 4.9 billion and the MCU totaling 14.9 billion and heading into a record obliviating 2018 slated what can say about style..Look I am no fanboy of either side bwtf and WTF is the difference in the comics that sets DCEU as one style and the MCU as another. I don't get that. Explain to me why WB can't find the same successful style as Disney. WB just needs to find their path and get their shit together. Make intro films with characters that people like and get involved with and attached to. Keep the same formula with other characters development and then build on that. What Marvel has done with Disney is just brilliant and DC can do the same let's not confuse style with revenue studios are a business and it's shareholders. Smashing box office numbers are the name of the game and you do that the Same way Disney and Marvel are doing it with character development and great script writing.
      The right actors the right everything and look what comes of it. I died inside when Zack Snyder had such a tragedy and fucken hurt and for WB to change gears the way they did killed JL but to make a unified JL with me not knowing (already saw in their own sigle kickass film *first*) jwtf is Cyborg, Aquaman and the Flash gonna do for me in a United Team Film...fucking nothing. I had no attachment and certainly not interest in those characters what so ever and that a problem. At this point the top of the studios should all get shitcanned and start fresh and build a winng DC Universe that I want to make the same box office smashing dollars the Marvel is.

        Thanks! Patty Jenkins is the source, she said that the No Man's Land scene "made the least sense to other people going in, which is why it's a wonderful victory for me.” She had to convince them why it was an important scene to keep. But she never mentioned Tsujihara, though I'm sure he had some kind of input (one way or another).

        Couple that with his mandate for keeping JL under 2 hours and pushing through with Snyder as director (when he clearly didn't really want him). It's inexcusable. We just need to stay positive and hope he's learned to let the film makers do what they do best.

        It surpassed my expectations for sure. I think they could have squeezed a little more potential out of the characters, but it was so good - and so important to today's society - that I honestly don't mind.
        Maybe my favorite Marvel movie so far. I'm trying to decide. Also love the GotG movies and Iron Man quite a lot.

        Even the worst of the MCU is still watchable, Black Panther though raised the bar for both MCU villains and solo films as it was fucking amazing. Like you my comic collection is pretty much DC but i would say 95% and not 80% haha, i only ever bother with older Marvel stuff and don't read the latest stuff except small bits on news site when they report stuff on them.

End of the day its going to be the highest grossing solo comic book film next weekend and it has one of the best and more human villains in a comic book film, i can assure you BP like WW will be the used in comparison for solo super hero films until the next major event level hit happens.

        I would say I've had nitpicks, some bigger than others, but never outright disappointment. The closest thing for me to disappointment was probably Mandarin.
        I prefer to focus on the things I enjoyed rather than the nitpicks, though. Most of the choices were to cater to the wider audience, which makes complete sense, even if it makes me sad too.
        The MCU isn't 100% how I would do it, but it's been a blast so far. And my collection, too, is like 80% DC. :)

      No, child. Can you not perceive, it does not matter if a Marvel character is A, B, or C list? Once humanity sees the 'red bar' with the letters M-A-R-V-E-L written across, they will know they are going to witness a true superhero movie with greatness beyond imagining, beyond anything DC can ever, in your lifetime, hope to accomplish moving forward. The simple, elegant, master word 'Marvel' has shown to connect with humans over a shared positive emotion; humans feel close to Marvel. Both experience the same positive feelings and are aware of it. These feelings become bonding moments of joy, gratitude, hope, amusement or another positive emotion — together. When you go to see Infinity War with your loved ones and look up to endless greatness, at that very moment you feel safe because you know you're witnessing genius virtuosity. If you feel threatened or in danger (or filled with rage, sorrow, anguish, and divided), it is because you may have stood home watching filthy DC movies. And it is indeed that simple. If it were the case you suggest, all ancient mythologies movies would have the best numbers. They don't. The swine that is DC does not. Not even the improved Star Wars can keep up. Then the movie came out, the hype turned into controversy, and WB adjusted their expectations. They were happy enough with MoS's overrall profit, compared to Superman Returns' relative lack of profit.
    For the sequel, Zack Snyder wanted to get his hands on Batman, and WB wanted a shared universe, ASAP. And thus, the DCEU was born.

    Wrong, I will tell you how it works: First you have the fans, a fan know everything related to a DC movie, then he goes to see the premiere (if he can) but also multiple times the movie (if he can), the fan advise his friends to do the same even if the critics bash the movie in order to make their own opinion.
    WB just lost the heart of his audience.
    I'm a DC fan, but I went to see JL only once, and didn't advise it to friends nor defend it against bashing, because you don't have arguments to defend it when the movie has unusual poor soundtrack, forced humour, a villain without a backstory compared to Zod, and the first scene of the movie with CGI'stach.

      Wrong. I will tell you how it works. This is basic film knowledge i'm talking here, the majority of people who watch these films are people who don't read comics and don't know half these characters are besides what the films show. Comic book fans (what i'm sure you aren't) only make up a very small number of the box office.
      By the way JL may have made less but its weekly drops were far less then the drops what BvS had so food for thought.

  You couldn't be more wrong, they listened to the g.a and the critics which represents most of the world, and rightfully so. Bvs had a record breaking second weekend drop and terrible word of mouth, it opened with 420m and only managed to finish with 870, which is terrible legs and multiplier.

Problem i feel here is their approach i love both marvel and dc but i feel as the article states it was rushed and imo mos box office take for a reboot wasnt too bad in comparison to other marvel and dc properties personally i loved snyders approach but it has some issues which is a mixture of his style and exec meddling
I feel they should have took the marvel approach with lets explore our characters but do it in their tone and style.But for gods sakes stop letting the execs mess with the movies this is the biggest problem with the genre not all marvel movies are great same with dc i use iron man 3 as an example

    They need to make good movies and fans, general audience and critics will all love them. Just like Wonder Woman. MOS was okayish but they should have fixed the stuff that was divisive for everyone. Instead they gave the keys of DC to Zack Snyder who made a dog shit movie, BvS. Then later Zack made an unwatchable cut that prompted them to bring in Joss whedon. But it was too late since everybody remembers BvS and don't want to waste their money with DC anymore.

Mean while Black Panther next weekend should outgross Iron Man 3 and be the highest grossing solo comic book film, i know BP has the plus of being a Marvel film and being culturally relevant but even still this is JL what has the two biggest comic book heroes of all time and the biggest female super hero of all time who has just had a mega hit solo film what everyone loved, JL should have been getting Avengers numbers and maybe if its previous film setting it up was liked and maybe if it had a studio who had a clue along with a good director making it then it could have but right now its embarrassing as hell for WB and for DC fans like myself. So yeah screw you WB and Snyder for making this happen.

      I was foolish enough to think it would pass 1b early on, since bvs managed to make 870m with bad reviews, but after analyzing the stats, i noticed that the huge opening weekend saved it, even though it underperformed. When jl opened with 93m domestically, i knew it was going to flop. Doctor strange made more than jl smh.

And with Infinity War coming to break every record in sight you would think that would be the knockout blow but noooooooo, that will happen when Ant-Man 2 beats JL in the box office as well.   I don't want to be the guy to say it, but it's something that I truly believe in.
  I think that Black Panther -and Wonder Woman for that matter- made at least 20% of their total profit solely because they represented a minority in a way like never before (which is very arguable).
  That being said, I do believe that Black Panther is an excellent movie (can't say the same for WW but that's not our topic). But I also believe that BvS (UE) and especially Man of Steel are also, for different reasons.
  It's sad for me personally that the majority don't see it that way. Because if they did, maybe we could've gotten a superior Justice League.

Dang it! Why can't we get things right? I like both (DC and Marvel) but my favorites come from DC and DC is where it began for me. I see the success that Marvel is doing, the ability to recover that Fox does with their X-Men stuff, and even Sony did well with the first 2 Spider Man movies, and I am not a hater of Spider Man 3 so to me I enjoyed it enough, but gosh what a CLUSTER FU$% DC is. I love Ben's Batman and we can't even get a straight answer, Be done with your shit already Ben or come to an agreement of some sort. WW was great and I hope Aqua Man does well. All we have is Aquaman to look forward to this year. We are so far behind it is not even funny!

At this point I'm convinced that Warner/DC will never be able to fully recover and put themselves up there with Marvel. They will always be seen as the ones trying to copy and replicate Marvel's success even if it's not true.

It's sad to see this. At this point, I think the best that DC and Warner should do after releasing Aquaman and Shazam is do complete reboot in the DCEU, only this time, they would have something planned for this universe and someone in charge of their movies. I even wrote my ideia of how should be the DCEU first phase of movies:
Year 1 : The Flash (with the rogues as villains) and Green Lantern Corps (the villains would be Artrocittus and the red lanterns).
If these films succeed, both in the box officer and with the critics, then the DCEU continues.
Year 2 : Wonder Woman (the villains would be Circe and Chettah) and Aquaman (the villain would be Orm, the ocean master)
Year 3 : Superman the man of tommorrow (the villains would be Lex Luthor and Metallo) and Batman the return of the dark knight (the villain would be Black Mask)
Year 4 : Flash 2 (It would have the introduction of Kid Flash and Gorilla Grodd as the villain) and Superman Batman the wolrd's finest (It would have Lex Luthor as the villain, adapting some elements from " Superman and Batman Public Enemies").
Year 5 : Green Lantern Corps 2 (It would adapt the "Sinestro Corps War" having Sinestro as the main villain) and Trinity (it would have Ra's Al Ghul, Circe and Solomon Grundy as the villains)
Year 6 : Justice League (it would introduce the martian manhunter, who would have some cameos in the previous movies, and he would be the one to assemble the heroes so they can fight against Starro, the conqueror) and Shazam (with Black Adam as the villain).
After this first phase, with their universe established is when warner and DC could continue to explore this universe with new movies such as Doctor Fate, Zatanna, Teen Titans, Justice Society, new gods and all other heroes of the DC universe.

This comic book stuff won't last in the big screen forever, not the huge success that has been rolling IMO. Very dangerous for DC to reboot. I think it would be the wrong move for them.   I think the next 3 movies (Aquaman, Shazam, WW2) in DCEU would tell us if there is future. If they get a positive response then they could continue with GL corps, batman and superman before they try a JL 1.5 with Flashpoint. I hope for the best!

    Disagree. One of the many reasons why the DCEU is failling is because Warner is trying to build a shared universe out of these bad movies like MOS and BvS. There is a reason why the MCU, the Marvel Netflix series, even the CW universe and the Bruce Timm Animated universe worked.Because they all build their universe from something good, with characters who got a proper introduction and people got invested in their stories. Warner had the chance to fix the DCEU and regain the people's trust in Justice League, where they would introduce their main heroes and they failed, and because of that even if they have new directors, they still will have to deal with a lot of inconsistency and plot holes lef by those movies. For exemple: If they made a MOS 2, that will not erase the events of MOS, people stiil gonna look at Superman as the guy who destroy a entire city and murdered Zod. If they made a Flash movie, how they going to show Barry as a forensic scientist if he was portray as dumbass who don't know where is the east i JL? They will probably have to retcon those characters and events, and that would just make their universe fell even more rushed.
    I respect your opinion but I think that, Warner won't be able to recover the trust of the fans while still trying to connect their movies with MOS/BvS/JL, They should just ignore this and, if they made a good movie that is not related to the DCEU, they can start a new universe from there.

Critics can't be polarized, real critics show the good and the bad sides of everything, with no hate or passion. Rotten Tomatoes are not gods of the reason, people need to understand it.

  Critics have A LOT of effects nowadays and Scorsese has talked about that months ago. If the movie had a good BO with bad critics, probably it would make much more money without the bad rotten tomatoes. Is it stupid? Yes, but today people think they need to have opinion even when they didn't saw that thing or didn't know about somethin, they need to put their sentences on social media no matter what. I'm not talking that JL was awesome, but when the "little number" appears a lot of people decide go to don't watch the movie.
  Years ago critics were interesting to know something about the movies before you make your own point, now they are love or hate and it's not rational. I'm not talking about quality, I don't think the DCEU is perfect, but the hate is real and WW was an exception. When they do articles about a simples teaser of Marvel, put the idea of the greatest movie that are coming. About DC? Rumors and more rumors with bad sides in the titles.
  Whatever, everything can change. I hope the hate ends with Aquaman but DCEU is only a part of this world. The most of people should make our own opinion about every film again because it's very boring to talk about cinema these day. It's all about "OMG, AWESOME, THE BEST" or "TRASH, STUPID, THE WORST". It's not "cool" to think that it was "not that good, could be better" or "really nice, good". Extremism is the rule... =/
