Myth buster: 'Batman v Superman' was planned before 'Man of Steel' hit theaters

Last week, DC Films storyboard artist Jay Oliva revealed that Man of Steel was originally planned as "chapter 1" of a five-part story. But he also debunked a rumor that's nearly five years old.

Man of Steel came out on June 14, 2013 and was met with mixed reviews. The movie made $668 million but reports said that Warner Bros. expected it to do better. When Batman v Superman was announced just a few months later at Comic-Con, it was reported that it was in response to Man of Steel's box office numbers. Warner Bros. was just putting Batman in the sequel to give it a boost.

But that's not true, according to Oliva. He says he met with director Zack Snyder back in April 2013, before Man of Steel hit theaters later that June. Snyder showed Oliva Batman v Superman storyboards, which featured a Dark Knight Returns style Batman.

Okay school is in session... Back in April 2013 (before MoS released in June) I was tasked with doing the Superman 75 short. I met with Zack who was the exec producer on it and he showed me storyboards of BvS with Batman already in it. AND it was a Batman from DKR.

So there you have it. A rumor has been debunked nearly five years later. Batman v Superman was always intended to be the sequel to Man of Steel. For fans who loved Man of Steel and want another solo Superman movie, fear not. Last week at CinemaCon, Henry Cavill confirmed that talks are ongoing and that he has a lot of ideas.

Just further proves that Snyder and Warner Bros has zero idea what they were doing and had no solid plan whatsoever. Just shoehorned Batman into a Man of Steel sequel in a sad attempt to boost the box office revenue. Then it was just downhill from there. This is really depressing at this point. Batman is my favorite superhero and I want DC to succeed just as much as Feige is making Marvel successful. They better take the time to figure out a proper structure for this film universe moving forward.

  The Man intended Superman to be the face of the DC Films shared universe. That's why we got Man of Steel first. And he had a plan of 5 films as Jay Olivia already stated which intended to complete Superman's Arc which started with Man of Steel. People keep saying superman was overshadowed by Batman in BvS, but in truth, BvS was primarily about the world's reaction to an alien being like Superman in our world and what his presence would to us. His presence was felt in each and every scene of the movie. That's how much Zack respected Superman and attempted to give that character a journey of sorts before he became the Superman we all recognise from the comics. But his vision for the character was butchered by Warner executives in JL.

  I get the misinformation about WB forcing Snyder to do BVS that's obviously been proven wrong, what I don't understand is how you come to the conclusion that snyder doesn't love superman.

The sad part about this revelation is that they had plenty of time to write and produce a much higher quality film then they delivered. I always believed that if the execution of MOS was done better and they went the route of The Worlds Finest for the sequel with two heroes uniting with different philosophies for the greater good, would have been a much better start to building the DC universe. Hopefully when they reboot this cast they will hire somebody that actually gets these characters to build it correctly.

        Sigh. I'm pretty sure that if Jim Lee also said that he didn't like the iterations, you guys would be agreeing with him. Hell, one of the main reasons for why some people here were so happy when Johns started to run things was because he talked about how he disliked the DCEU iterations.

        I was just saying that people, who actually work on the characters, like the iterations. That's it. You and Myzterius were the ones who said "Well Lee's opinion doesn't matter". I had simply used Lee as an example in my original comment.

        Sigh. You guys are not reading. I never once said that Lee's opinion was a fact. I merely, merely, said that it's good that there are some people like him, who actually work with DC, that liked the iterations. That is all. Christ. All I'm sating is that while fans are complaining that the iterations are bad, it is worth that you have people in the industry who do like them.
        Also, numbers do lie. It's why people don't use the box office to judge the quality of Twilight or the Transformers franchise. Hell, you even have good films that have a poor box office number.

        I wasnt referring to box office numbers, i was referring to the majority that didnt like the movie. I agree that box office isnt a reliable source to judge a movie, since great movies flopped and bad ones were hits, but in bvs case the numbers didnt lie, like the record breaking second weekend drop etc.
        Im pretty sure hes not the only one that liked the iterations, but why is it good though? Is it because you share the same opinion?

        When the box office is under-whelming, it gets terrible reviews and more importantly audiences care very little for the film then yeah that pretty much tells you the quality of the film. This is the thing fans of the film don't understand and its that they are the minority and not majority.

        Most of us do understand - we just disagree that the simple state of being in the societal minority makes you factually wrong about something. Especially so when that something is as subjective and preference-based as art, or as effected by cultural memetics as movies.
        What percent of Ancient Greeks thought Zeus was real? The majority, right? Is Zeus real then? ;p
        It used to be accepted by most that the Earth was flat, too. These aren't even subjective examples like movies, they're based in science and hard evidence (or lack thereof).
        How can the majority of people believe such wrong things if the majority is always right?
        Popularity reflects culture, and that's really it.

        The problem is here is that you using the logic and understanding of people who lived 100's and 1000's of years ago to compare to how people view a film of the 21st century what no one is talking or caring about except us nerds on sites like these. Back then they didn't know better while today we know a fuck ton more and believing in the likes of Zeus or flat Earths is a damn sight different to saying the majority of people who watched BvS think its bollocks, come on your better then that and above such weird comparisons.
        End of the day the majority think Catwoman and Batman and Robin are utter bullshit, would you argue and say they aren't? If someone appeared and said in all seriousness they both classics and up there with The Godfather and everybody who thinks otherwise doesn't understand would you not laugh or laugh in your head? End of the day some films are just bad films and BvS is one of them like Batman and Robin and Catwoman and The Room and Die Another Day and so on, is there fans of those films who rank them high?         I'm not micro-conflating the things so much as making the case for the absolute fact that majority belief does not automatically speak of the reality of something. If this can be true in the case of fact, it can certainly be true of subjective views of art. Saying, 'But that was thousands of years ago!' doesn't effect that point at all.
        You know as well as I do that anyone back then simply had to wonder, 'Well, this person tells me Zeus exists, but where is the evidence?', and they were perfectly capable intellectually of achieving this thought back then the same as I was when I was 6 and being indoctrinated into Christianity. They weren't cavemen. They were simply susceptible to the culture around them and absorbed that culture as the truth, which still happens today.
        (Not saying this is the case for your opinion of BvS, but it's an example of why pop opinion as a measure of real quality is fallacious.)
        Putting BvS in the same circle as Batman & Robin or Catwoman is a stretch. Even if you don't like it, which is fine, that's a huge negative exaggeration of it's quality.
        I can accept someone not finding it to their tastes, or disagreeing with the characterization, and I might even agree with some of the criticism, but the exaggerating and nitpicking is cranked way up with this movie more than I've ever seen with another movie.

        I agree BvS isn't as bad as BaR or Catwoman but i still think its a bad film, even ignoring how it treats the characters i still don't think the film is good. Honestly i still believe its the Warehouse scene, the visuals and Affleck what gets the film so much love for some people, i'm not saying its the same for you but i do wonder if the Warehouse was never there (so no kick ass Bat scene) and you didn't have that awesome suit or Batmobile and those visuals would the film be held in such high regard from its fans?

        Lee is also a higher up in DC and most likely has to say positive things because it would look bad if he said anything negative, not to mention the guy has played a part in some of the most questionable things in DC of the past decade or two and because of that means his opinion can't be trusted at best. I would take Mark Waid's opinion on these films because he's arguably a bigger fan of characters like Superman and well he isn't a fan of these films, he didn't hate MoS but he really didn't like what they done with the character and while i don't know his thoughts on BvS i expect he hates the film going by his faults for MoS, he stands no reason to lie unlike Lee (who properly doesn't give a shit either way unless it effects sales) and is without a doubt a massive SM fan and knows the character better then most.

        Jim Lee also played a massive part in some of the most brain dead choices in DC and is someone whose opinion matters very little to readers of DC Comics, yeah his art is always fantastic and always worth looking at but his view of DC and the way he runs things isn't something most comic readers agree with, in fact most DC comic readers would agree DC would be better off without him even if his art is amazing.

        Its widely known in the DC comic community that the love for Lee only extends to his art, do some Google searching and ask some questions on Comicvine and you will see what i mean.
        As for Johns well its widely regarded in the comic community that he's a fantastic writer who has made some utter classics. His Green Lantern run is regarded as one of the best runs in DC, his run on Wally West's Flash is widely regarded as a classic and 2nd only to Waid's Wally Flash run. Sinestro Corps War is regarded as a DC classic along with Blackest Knight, Infinite Crisis while flawed is loved and The Darkseid War is regarded as one of the best Justice league stories of the 21st century and his N52 JL run is pretty good as well. He also done Batman Earth One Vol 1 and 2 and that's highly loved and DC Rebirth is classed as one of DC's best stories of the past 20 years, even right now people are loving and enjoying The Doomsday Clock what he's currently doing.
        End of the day people who hate on Johns are usually people who don't read comics and base their thoughts on his "film" work for their opinions, people who just haven't read his stuff or people still butt hurt that he brought Hal back and had a say in bringing Barry back.

        Well on the same Comicvine, you have fans who say that he has written subpar stories, and despite also writing stories, he retcons things too much. Even on Reddit, when asked about opinions on the decision to run the DCEU, some people acknowledged that despite his comic history, this was a whole different monster that he’s not ready for.

        Doesn't change the fact that the stuff i said about the stuff i listed is widely regarded as the majority view, his GL run for instance actually made GL way more relevant and set in motion everything we know about GL today and his work on Wally's Flash gave us Zoom and made The Rogues some of the best villains in DC. Yeah of course Johns has written some bad stuff but so has every writer at one point, doesn't change that the majority of stuff he's wrote is usually well regarded.
        You see this is my problem with you, you base so much of your opinions on a lot of this stuff based on what you have read in articles, see on YT videos and or read in forums and rarely based on first hand account. All those high points of Johns i listed i've read and loved and then talked about with fellow people who have also read them and loved or un-loved them, we haven't read a wiki article on them we have actually read them first hand so we can make a better informed opinion. End of the day have you actually read any of Johns work? Or are your thoughts based on what you see in forums or watched on YT video?
        Thing is right now DC Comics in the comics side of things is in a very high spot and is mainly loved by comics readers, overall Rebirth has been just that and is been a success and Johns played a major part in that. We still can't judge his film work just yet as WB have had too much input but we know he had a big part in making WW and well we know how big and how much of success that was.

I didn’t have to actually read One More Day to understand how stupid it was. I didn’t actually have to read Holy Terror to realize how racist and horrible it was. Same with All-Star Batman & Robin.

        I agree with you that Johns has done enough great work in my opinion that he should be respected despite any gripes (I'm mixed on Batman: Earth One, but I love Flashpoint, etc). Still, it's unfair to hinge such an argument on Schuyler's reading history, because it's beside the point.
        If Lee or Johns are popular and loved, or if they're considered controversial, is entirely
        observable without Schuyler having read the comics listed. The discussion is about how the fanbase at large regards them.

        My problem with Schuyler is he's quick to throw his opinion about on things where he has no first hand account of them, most of his thoughts are based on what he reads in forums or what he watches on YT. He's very quick to say Johns is controversial and say why yet he hasn't read anything by Johns to form his own opinion, end of the day just because he's seen a bunch of people on forms say "i don't like the retcons" doesn't mean that's how it is, Schuyler could go and read Johns and find he disagrees on all these "faults" and find himself a massive fan of Johns. This is why i get so fed up with a lot of the people who openly admit to not follow comics on here because they are quick to throw around "facts" they got from YT or Wiki yet lack any real first hand experience to actually really understand what they're actually taking about, i've seen time and time again of people throwing round panels and stuff from comics to try and prove a point but fail because they just quickly Google searched the image and lacked the actual context of the panel they are putting up, its like looking a check list of facts taking from forums and wiki most of the time with them. I don't mind debating with you because you actually follow comics and will admit the stuff you don't know much about but its fucking annoying when you have someone arguing with you where all their evidence is just taking from wiki and forums and lacks the context.

Hell, Linkara likes some of Johns work but he's said the same thing. I get that you're a big fan of his, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have any weaknesses when even readers say that he does. And I could read his work and like it, but the only way I would be able to validate for myself if he does retcon a lot, is if I read a shit ton of comics. I refuse to do that just to prove a point.
        In this day and age, you don't actually need first hand experience to understand the context of something, when you have countless articles and videos that explain the shit for you. And hell, I trust Linkara over anyone because he makes sure that his viewers understands everything before he even talks about the first page in the comic he's reviewing.

      I care what Jim thinks. I care because I respect his point of view and recognize him as someone with an intimate fandom and history of well-established and remarkable input with the characters.
      I don't care about most of the audience because I don't have any basis to respect their opinions on, and because I typically avoid viewing culture as a measure of something being truly good or bad.
      The studios may have a differing set of priorities, but that's what I care about personally.

        Sure, and that's why I take what anyone at DC or WB say cautiously about their own products (as we would with politicians ;p), but I don't completely distrust them either.
        The amount of weight it carries in society at large probably isn't enormous, but as fans, it's just nice to hear Jim likes something, and he likely means it judging by his apparent tastes.

I admit that i thought that rumor was true, but i should've known better. Snyder really screwed up everything, why would you have a bvs movie so early? The whole point of a bvs story was for the two to have a relationship/friendship before fighting (like cap and iron man in civil war) and last but not least, he killed supes.....Shame on you snyder. I hope wb got rid of him for good.

      Ok..... That doesn't mean that BvS had to follow a similar path. Civil War was "friends" breaking up. BvS was two guys who hated each other become temporarily acquaintances, then JL ended with them becoming friends.

        Bvs didnt have to follow that exact path, but it makes way more sense. Stark and rogers were never really friends, but they had history and worked together, which is way better than that bvs mess.

Just come on, I get that one of the criticisms of BvS is that not a lot of stuff is explained in the film, but the film repeatedly tells you that Batman is acting differently in BvS. Yes, we don't know how he used to act before MoS, but the film still tells us that the branding and killing Superman is not something that he would usually do.
        And they did bond when he and Bruce talked about the bank and the Kent farm. All Clark had to say was "You know, Bruce. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship."

        We've had five widely seen and widely loved movies of Batman in-character already, not counting the widely known cartoons and video games to give us the general idea.
        It's not like no one has any idea who Batman is to understand what Alfred et al were explaining he fell away from in BvS and JL. BvS was not a blank slate. It's giving us credit as viewers to have an idea who Batman is going in. Everyone knows the obvious, and many still whine when we get the origin story retold because it's obvious.

        Again, i dont mind batman being out of character, but when you introduce him like this in his first appearance in the cinematic universe, it doesn't feel right. Kind of like if superman was introduced as evil in mos, it wouldn't feel right and unearned. The whole point of a shared universe is the build up, if you start with all your bricks up, then youre not progressing, because you'll have to remove the bricks you layed to explain something that was seen 10 movies ago. Now the only way for batman to work now is by doing prequels, same goes for wonder woman. Nothing is moving forward and progressing the story.

        I recall a rumor during the movie's development that it was being considered for a two-part treatment.
        My guess is that Zack floated the idea by WB and they, as they typically do, were too nervous and limp-wristed to go for it because it seemed dangerous.
        That's really the failing of the DCEU so far, in my opinion: WB's fear of commitment to a grand vision that requires a gamble-esque investment. The same behavior borked both SS and JL.

It perfectly ties in with the Christ allegory they were working with, and, logically, how else would a distrusting, paranoid world that fears and hates Superman for his very existence - the real world - possibly come to accept the truth of his heroism without his making the ultimate altruistic choice to prove it? And that choice also brilliantly and beautifully wraps up his character arc started in MoS of having faith in humanity. Absolutely stellar writing.

  Okay fine let's build a relationship between Bats and Supes and then let's make them fight. Sure, but then what ? The ending of CW was plain bad when they stayed friends. As for Batman and Superman, the fight between those two couldn't have ended in a truce, they wouldn't just say "K let's stop", one of the two would have died, making one of those two a murderer. But when you get BvS, where those two characters only fight because of ideas and they are strangers, it's very simple to stop the fight.

        Imagine Batman and Superman were long time friends. And for whatever reason they start to fight, Superman wants to stop Batman and Batman thinks Superman is above the law. Options for Batman : sending Superman to prison, reason with him. None of those choices would work : Superman wouldn't go to prison (duh) ; if the fight ended by reasoning then why would it start ? So Batman would have to kill Superman.
        Choices for Superman : same as for Batman. Would Batman accept to go to prison ? Don't think so.
        The fight between long time friends would have to end with a death.
        Now in BvS they don't know each other, both think they are doing the right thing, but both are not in their right state of mind. And would you look at that, the fight stops because of ideologies, Superman doesn't explicitely explains to Batman why he's in the wrong but Batman understands and now everything is good. If they knew each other, knew their way of thinking, their ideologies, their arguments, how could the debate end without removing the opposing half ? You're so keen on TDKR, so you'll see both have their own way of thinking and neither changes their opinion, resulting in the death of one.
        If the DCEU started by introducing Batman and Superman's friendship then made a "CW" movie, it would have resuled in the death of a character and there would be no way of reconciliation. But in the current state of the DCEU both Superman and Batman are friends, so the movies can keep on going.
        I can't get clearer than that, I'm probably wasting your time so that's it for me, good day.

stop. Snyder always wanted Batman in MOS 2 just not to the extent that it ended up being. It is known. Snyder came up with the story for Batman, Aquaman, WW, the Flash, and Cyborg. WB, instead of doing solo movies like Snyder wanted, rushed the heroes together in order to answer Marvel's Avengers.

I never went to a midnight showing of any Marvel movie or discussed anything about them, never seen one twice... I watched some of them obviously but I never looked forward to any of them. Not lying. I never saw Captain America 1, Thor 1 and 2, Iron man 2, Guardians 2, Norton's Hulk (if that counts)...

  It doesn't suck for me. I'm not going to say I was happy with Justice League, I wasn't, but it's a meh installment of what has been a pretty good start for the DCEU. The "formula" for making a universally crowd-pleasing superhero movie has been mastered by Marvel, they've got a recipe that works for them. Unless you want the DCEU to copy them, then finding what the general audience wants in a new formula and making sure it gets a billion dollars is going to difficult and likely take some time.
  DC Films can only do what they know. I'm not going to look at Infinity War and use it to pine over what WB should be doing. That would make no sense, to me.

It's not copying Marvel cause DC has it's own tone and characters and stories. It's like making a cake. Many have the same steps but the ingredients make a different cake

      I completely understand your point and you're probably right. But the argument for me is, would using the same formula yield the same returns as the MCU, with these type of characters and studio? I'd be worried about the general audience looking at it as a too much of a copy of the MCU and being put off by the association alone.
      I think WB have no choice but to try something else, a different formula to what the MCU have given us.

        I actually agree with you at certain level that it would look like copying Marvel, but I think it'd matter only to hardcore fans. General audiences don;t really care about this "rivalry" if you will. And not only that, but they responded well to the formula so doing that would've benefited DC. Too late for that now. They gave us something different that kinda worked kinda didn't and now they have to stick to it and make it work somehow. But you gotta admit that now that we've seen them together, getting a bunch of solo movies won't be as exciting. I mean the movies might still be good, but they won;t be as epic for sure. They are gonna give us less instead of building up to giving us more.

This was in response to shit-talking by some guy who made a Hitman movie (can you believe the gall of the guy). The entire thread is pure gold. Jay Oliva doesn't tweet too often but when he does, it's always worth reading.
I thank both the New and Old Gods that they chose the route they did because BvS is probably my favorite movie ever. It's the type of movie that I'd like to see more of in the DCEU, serious, not formulaic, comic book-y (almost to a fault) and products of the director who makes them. General audience be damned.
I hope they dont completely forget or attempt to write-off a lot of what went on in BvS, even though JL alluded to them trying, there is so much there for them to build up from.

That doesn't mean I'll take your word for it, because you've destroyed that privilege by being a pathological, and infamous liar, but for argument's sake, let's say you didn't... The costume designer said in an interview, that he began working on the Batsuit in I THINK May of 2013. Snyder and Affleck likely met about the role, not too long after Argo won the Oscar. And Affleck was PROBABLY unofficially cast, before the movie was announed at the 2013 San Diego Comic Con. Plus, Batman and Superman should've already had shared a movie in the early 2000's.   I think you’re confused. “Snyder boys” are the ones who hate Justice League the most, and only some of them made any sort of claim that were contradicted by this article. Assuming “Snyder boys” means anyone who enjoyed BvS, I can tell you as one of those people that I never made any such claims, and that I totally think JL deserves to fail because it was no longer Snyder’s film.

So now I get the answer I have been looking for.
As much as I loved BvS and appreciate Zack, this was the beginning of the end. BvS should have never been considered so early and now we know Zack was the reason and not WB. So sad.
I hope we get something different and wonderful from Aquaman because even though IW was good I'm just done with anything from the D-NEY cookie machine.

That doesn't debunk anything. MoS was in pre production in 2010 and production a year later. What happened btwn 2011 and 2013? The Avengers scoring a big box office blow. It definitely affected "the plan" that Snyder and Warner set for the Superman franchise back in 2010. Olivia admits that he only met with Snyder a month before MoS came out, which meant that Warner already had it screen tested before audiences and executives at that point. There was a clear rush to copy and paste the MCU formula, with a touch of Frank Miller spice. I'm convinced MoS' final battle was made to be more destructive in post following the Avengers final act.
We saw this before with Green Lantern and the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man franchises. Plans can be altered overnight.

I worked with some people at the music department of man of steel, bvs and for some time on justice league. Talking with people from other departments, I learned during man of steel that they were already planning VFX shots with previz for bvs and Justice league back then. I should not say that but already at the time of man of steel they already knew how for example would look stuff we haven't seen yet like Atlantis and so on...

What's done is done. It was a slap in the face to the cast and crew, but it's done and over. Time to blaze a new trail with characters who have never had a movie before and start off with what could be one of the most technically ambitious movies in quite some time. Let JL's failure serve as a reminder, but don't dwell on it.

  Saying BvS is a sequel to MoS is like saying Civil War is a sequel to Age Of Ultron or Iron Man 3, i mean yeah it follows events but it isn't standalone sequel with just Superman and SM related characters.

      Civil War was a fan wanted film for years and seeds for Civil War were planted all the back in the first Avengers film, i wouldn't be surprised if BvS made Marvel act sooner but i do believe they always intended CW especially when WS sets so much of it up and is pretty much a prequel to it.

Snyder always talked about a sequence with another old hero that could be the Batman. He wanted to tech Clark how to be a hero to be the leader of JL in the future. I think it would be MoS 2, focused in the Superman with the BvS storyline, but WB prefered to do a "double movie" to catchy more attention about the DCEU.
