Starfire actress fires back at fans after 'Titans' set photo backlash and "hate speech"

Earlier this week, set photos from the upcoming show Titans were released online. They gave us our first look at Starfire, Beast Boy, and Raven. The response to the photos wasn't great, and now Starfire actress Anna Diop is firing back at fans.

"To the ‘Titans’ fans: Yesterday a photo of me on set leaked online," Diop said on Instagram. "And it was unfortunate because fans have been waiting MONTHS for a photo of ‘Starfire’ and a sloppy photo of me on a curb in 15 degree weather is what they got instead. For the sake of our incredible fans - I hated that this is the first picture people are seeing. It’s out of context and it’s a misrepresentation of the incredible character I get to play. And also a misrepresentation of the phenomenal production behind it all."

It sounds like what we saw in that set photo isn't a full representation of what Starfire will look like on the show. Some CGI will likely be added as well, perhaps to make her orange. Diop went on to address the "hate speech" she received due to the Titans set photo. You can check out her full statement on Instagram below.

You have to wonder why Warner Bros. didn't release their own photos before shooting outside in public, especially since they already released official photos of Robin, Hawk, and Dove. We'll have to wait a big longer before we get a true taste of what Starfire, Beast Boy, and Raven will look like on Titans.

        Nope, still right. Here's why...
        People can't seem to agree on a universal definition of hate speech. Hate is an emotion, you can't really measure it. You can't put it in numbers. So the idea of hate speech is nonsensical. If you end up in a fight with someone, you scream all kinds of profanities, you are in fact hating them at the moment. Should that be considered hate speech? In theory these “hate speech” policies are intended to protect poor, oppressed minorities, but in practice they are designed to protect the government from criticism.
        Different countries have different laws and definitions regarding hate speech. America, the country the Starfire actress is from, doesn't have laws that prohibit you from saying "I don't like (insert minority here)." America is the only country on Earth that has free speech in their constitution. However, you are not allowed to incite violence against anyone. That is against the law. So the people who say "hate speech is not free speech" are factually wrong. Unless they live outside America ofc.
        As far as people criticizing Trump... Sure. I get it. People don't like him. That's fine. But no one's defending him against "hate speech" attacks when people say "we shouldn't have straight, white males as presidents anymore". Which is not exactly a political argument against him. That's completely personal. And I'm not saying they should. I just wish the same standard was held for everyone. You're basically telling me that the people who scream "I HATE TRUMP. And I wish he should die" is not hate speech. But calling someone a n****r online is...? Really?
        This girl is an actress. She's bound to be criticized. It's in the job description. If she can't handle a handful of 9 year olds calling her a n****r... She should quit. Btw, calling someone a n****r is also not illegal in USA. I just couldn't type it out because disqus wouldn't show this comment.
        Tl;dr... This is a long winded argument about the idea of hate speech. Not about this girl. If she's offended by mean trolls, that's on her. She should get used to it because it's not going anywhere. She won't change their minds, no matter how hard she tries. And if you think companies and the govt need to take action against that...         Hate speech in America is a part of free speech. It's protected by their constitution and there's no way around it. You may not like it, but it's that. Some European countries have different laws about hate speech. You can go to jail for it. In America, you're free to say what ever you want as long as you don't incite violence against someone.   I’m a conservative and a Trump supporter, so I am obviously not a big fan of blanket racism accusations. However, reading Miss Diop’s post, she never did that. She responded gracefully to the concerns of fans worried about the look, and then told folks not to allow anonymous Twitter trolls to affect your self-image. I thought it was a classy post that made me like her more.

        Context matters. Here we have a black person playing a victim and reaping empathy from others because of "racism". I find it annoying. And so do others apparently. Btw, everyone's just taking her word for it. I don't give enough of shits to look through her instagram profile hunting for offensive comments. People are just sick of people playing the victim hierarchy game. It's come to a point that you won't be able to make a valid criticism for any American minority because they're a minority. From all the comments I've read on disqus about her looks, none were about her skin color. Maybe some didn't like it, but they certainly weren't racist about it. Now, that's my anecdotal evidence.

        Free speech means you say what you want without fear of being killed or put in prison but it doesn't mean you are free from consequences with what you say. My family comes in all shades of brown and black. My brother's nickname is shadow. Laughs everytime and my wife I call her midnight. Not once does she whine about it.       Dude you have no idea what the context of the episode that they are shooting for this wardrobe set up is. How can you say they are showing off her skin color if you don’t know what the story is? Maybe there is an episode where her character has to blend in and look human and not orange skinned with burning hair? Would you call it “showing off” if it was a white chick in the same outfit? Every episode could be her painted orange with awesome fire hair, but one episode where the skin color of the actress is shown and people lose their fucking minds. Comic book fandom has become hard to be apart of when everyone is close minded and jumps to conclusions.

        Yes I have and I never said it was in her power set, nor was it an idea pulled from the pages. You just don’t have any context of what is going on in this scene is my point. But being that this show is comic inspired, the human form for all these characters could be some form of magic from any number of characters (including raven whos on the team and in the photos) or it could be a dream sequence, or they lost their powers, etc etc.

    All i saw was those pictures 3 or 4 and i think thats all u saw too probably. So why cant i build my oppinion on that but u can? do u have any inside source that gave u more info?
    To put it short. I dont know how this show will turn out but what ive seen "so far" doesnt look good and when u see most of the responses to the pictures im pretty sure im not alone ( my oppinion might not be as extreme as others ). Let me have my low expectations and maybe i get surprised ...and i will let u have ur high expectations or whatever oppinion u have ...i dont care too much actually.

If the comment thread on here was any indication of the general consensus, then the criticism was overwhelming about the costume design and not the actress. Seems like she's cherry picking the responses from the minority that we can all probably agree are assholes. (also this would have been a great opportunity to reveal an official photo...)

There was definitely some butthurt buildup. A LOT of the racist comments actually started when Diop was first cast. And about a month before that annoucement, Fox revealed the..."controversial" and "divisive" first look at Domino, for Deadpool 2. Starfire, Beast Boy, and Raven are really powerful characters. I figured they'd use the special effects for the powers, but have the actors wear colorful makeup, just like the actresses who portray Gamora and Mystique. Hopefully that happens.

The problem is not that she is black, at least not for me, but seems to be more than 30 years old (much more than Brenton Thwaites/Robin) and the characterization that is seen in that image is terrible, perhaps Starfire has that hair style?

While, yeah, she looks bad in that pic, I still think there's a lot of context for why she looks like that there.
It's a relief to know she says it's disappointing for that pic to be the first one released cause she knows that's not what she'll look like.
And to those mocking her for the "hate speech" (which are offensive comments) You didn't read all the tweets and comments so you can't say she's exaggerating.
Still super excited for this to come out since, like I've said before, I got into comics thanks to the John's run on the TT.

      Probably because they got pissed that another role that should've been played by a white person, went to a black person instead. More and more, people are getting sick of that trend in Hollywood. I'm not saying calling someone names is the way to express that opinion, but not everyone is capable of forming coherent sentences that will express their views.
      Beastboy has been drawn as Asian before. If I'm not mistaken. Raven is white, I guess. Starfire is an alien. But so is Superman. She always looked white. So, I can understand why some people think it's "blackwashing".

In this case, the character is an orange alien, so there really wasn't any color washing, even though I do agree. It shouldn't have mattered what race the actress was, as long as they made her orange to look like the character but they didn't, so that's the real problem.

This project is in huge trouble already. Many disliked the casting right off the start, the first leaked pics are being openly mocked and one of the actors is calling large sections the rabbid fan base racists. This show is going to start with half the viewership numbers it would have if they had just cast a more traditional Starfire at the start.

Regardless of your feelings about her statement or hate speech, or whatever . . we can all agree on one thing. It's an absolutely terrible picture and a horrendous representation of what the Teen Titans should look like. With DC's questionable decision-making over the past couple of years, this "first look" picture should definitely worry fans. I hope i'm wrong, but i am not putting money on anything.

  All criticism isn't hate speech. People being legitimately racist towards her are wrong. However, the photos in no way present a character that could reasonably be passed off as Starfire. I'm sure the actress is a cool person and it's not her fault she was cast, but this doesn't make any sense.
  If a white girl or Asian or Indian or whatever was cast as Starfire and put in that hair and clothes and presented to us, we as people familiar with the character would have no obligation to accept her, either. I'm sorry, but that's the truth.

I agree that all criticism isn't hate speech and in my original comment I was obviously refering to the truly hateful comments that were just taking advantage of a behind the scenes photo to ''justifiably'' be racist and nothing more without constructive criticism. I myself did not like the photo in question but I wait for an official one to judge (positively or negatively - same with the Shazam costume) without being total garbage in the process!
