Warner Bros. premiered a new clip for Batman: Gotham by Gaslight on IGN this weekend. It's titled "Batman vs. Big Bill" and shows the Dark Knight encounter a street thug and some orphans in a scene from the upcoming animated adaptation of the Elseworlds classic. Check it out above.
Batman: Gotham By Gaslight has been rated R and will be available on Digital HD on January 23, 2018 and Blu-ray on February 6, 2018. It’s available for pre-order now.

Still not loving the translation of Mignola's artwork, but I'm going to watch this just for Bruce Greenwood's performance, and I might be able to appreciate it as it's own thing thanks to him.
I hope they bring William Baldwin back sometime too.

Wish more people knew about these. I just recently marathonned it to show my friend, and he was impressed.
Everyone assumes that older stuff is outdated and boring, but I really feel that Fleischer's Superman is something special and timeless. :)

I grew up watching Superman on B&W TV (George Reeves) and later Batman (Adam West) in the 1960s. I had no idea these Fleischer cartoons EXISTED until I was well into my 20s. I saw Mechanical Monsters at a midnight animation festival at my local movie house. I really wish I could have seen them when I was a child.
The animation is first rate. The backgrounds are lush. It's very shadowy and noir. I liked the 1940 Lois Lane; she didn't take any crap and wasn't afraid to rush into danger. I liked the early Superman, he was more of a strongman.
Today's animators should study this stuff if they haven't already.
I really wish they put as much effort into their live action films as they do with most of their animated projects.
I have literally the opposite takeaway. The animation, while passable, feels very generic and shallow, failing to adapt the visual style and atmosphere of the book - and even meet bars set by previous DC works. It's more like what you'd expect from a modern long-running cartoon.
When you compare this and The Killing Joke to the animation of, say, the Bayonetta movie, which was a labor of visual love, it's suggestive that they are punching these out very quickly, spending enough time and money to get us to buy it, but not bending over all the way backwards since they don't have to to hook us (which is not a new thing). It's not like Korean animators aren't capable of being as good as Japanese ones, and it's not like Mignola's art or Bolland's art don't deserve the care.
I'd like an increased budget and more time and care put in to DC's animated properties. They all feel shallower than they should in both animation and writing depth compared to their source material (even including the fan-loved Dark Knight Returns two-part movie). Movies like Man of Steel, the Dark Knight Trilogy, etc, are monolithic by comparison - to the point where I find it laughable to call it a contest.
Hmm quite an interesting take there. I can't help but agree with a lot of what you said. But what I meant is care when it comes to characterizations. I feel like with these animated films, with the exception of a couple of instances the characters are not as divisive as their live action counterparts. I wish the live action films gave use characters that were embraced by everyone. But I completely get what you mean. I don't mind mediocre animation as long as the characters and story are good enough to keep my attention.

A live action standalone movie from this would be great
Meeeeeh....I am (was) a big fan of DC animated movies, and most are WAY better than the live action movies (DCEU.) However, the focus on Batman (and I am a huge Batman fan) mixed with mediocre stories and 1980's style animation as of late, is another troubling sign for DC. Get your act together DC and WB.
Not sure why they're making a movie out of this. Gotham by gaslight is only 48 pages long (same length as killing joke). That means they have to add stuff just like they did with Killing Joke. With Killing Joke the additions (Batgirl backstory) nearly ruined the film. I just hope Bruce Timm hasn't lost his touch, but I am worried
I have to eat crow on this one. I saw it last night ....and it was really good. I love how the DC animated movies are better than their live action films. They are more story driven...take a que DCEU. Animation was ok, but the story and the characters were excellent. I never read this book, but now I am going to, just to see the differences and additions. Funny, the theme is appropriate for current times, woman being preyed upon.
