First 'Batman: Gotham by Gaslight' trailer confirms R-rating

In September, the first footage for Batman: Gotham by Gaslight hit the web, taken from the special features of Batman and Harley Quinn. Today, IGN premiered the first trailer!

Before even getting to the new footage, the Batman: Gotham by Gaslight trailer confirms that the movie will be rated R for "Some violence". Check out the new trailer in the video above.

"Gotham by Gaslight" is a classic Batman comic that was published in 1989. Here’s a brief description from the Batman News review:

Originally published in 1989, Gotham by Gaslight tells the “What if” story of a 19th century Caped Crusader who comes face to face with the Butcher of Whitechapel. It’s Batman vs. Jack the Ripper written by Brian Augustyn and illustrated by none other than the creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola.

The R rating on these DC animated movies mean nothing to me. I think Killing Joke and Justice League Dark should have just gotten a PG-13 rating. Heck, Flashpoint Paradox felt more like an R than those two, but it only got a PG-13! I’m still looking forward to Gotham by Gaslight, though, no matter the rating.

WW, DKR (these 2 are confirmed) and likely Flashpoint had to be cut a bit to get a PG-13 but WB doesn´t care anymore and will now just use the R to promote the films. Unless it´s WW or Superman starring, i guess. Dito for the games but the TT adventures sure earn that M for Money rating. The torture and gore were legit.

A vigilante who dresses as a bat to strike fear is more credibly at home in the nineteenth century than the modern era. I think Batman appears a little too modern in this setting as drawn here though and developing a look more appropriate for the Victorian Age would have worked better. This trailer comes off more like Batman time traveled to a prior century. Nonetheless, I do like the concept and my misgivings aside it should work. Excellent voice work again by Bruce Greenwood as Batman, an actor who is consistently good in whatever part he takes on.

....why? Does this need to be R rated? And is there a reason WB is so unwilling to go R rated with their live action movies? *cough* suicide squad *cough*

It's easier to do and watch cartoon violence that looks hardcore and convincing than make live action violence that looks like it was done with CGI for the sake of gore.

  well it depends on the material. If we are dealing with violent characters then I think it should portray that properly. I don't think blood is "that" hard to do in live action...

Squad could still work with only a PG rating. Their central TV-PG JLU ep. more than proved that.
The Arkham toon film didn´t cross the PG-13 threshold either and the source 80s and earls 90s comic were all under the Comic Code (outside the Deadshot mini).
Going 17+ is equally valid too but that first film didn´t need it with what it was in the end.
UC BvS also got that R in the end with WB winking i though. Even Hobbit 3 Extended got one for 1 hand stab shot... Long story short, the MPAA is a mess.

  Right and what it was in the end wasn't very good. I mean I think they CAN make a pg13 Suicide Squad and have it still be really good, but it will feel shackled. It won't be able to reach its full potential and won't be able to completely do justice to the material. I haven't read a lot of Squad comics, but I have read it enough to know what its about and what they are like, and honestly, It is R rated material as far as I can see. It honestly probably has more business being R rated than a Wolverine or Venom movie. Its bad guys. Its violent and there is a lot of profanity. Plus they get their heads blown off occasionally. Suicide Squad the movie should have been straight up nasty in my opinion. And the fact that Deadpool, an R rated movie, made more money that Squad, a pg13 movie that should have been R, is honestly kind of embarrassing. The Assault on Arkham animated movie felt more like a proper suicide squad film than the live action one did.
