Report: Ben Affleck won't star in 'The Batman', but is expected to appear in 'The Flash'

Variety just published a big piece about how Warner Bros. is restructuring DC Films after Justice League's poor performance. Included towards the end of that report are some interesting details about Ben Affleck's future as Batman.

Variety says that Ben Affleck is expected to appear in the standalone Flash movie, but that it's very unlikely he will star in The Batman. According to their sources, director Matt Reeves wants to cast the role with "fresh talent". Reeves has been meeting with potential Batman actors recently, most notably Jake Gyllenhaal.

Affleck appearing in The Flash movie would fulfill the final movie he has on his contract. He signed a three picture deal in 2013 before Batman v Superman, and his Suicide Squad cameo didn't count towards one of those three movies.

Variety says that Warner Bros. is still developing a Flash movie, though it's unclear if it will still be the Flashpoint movie that was announced at Comic-Con last summer.

Damn it if this is true. There was someone on this forum when Ben was first cast who was so adamant to me Affleck was going to write, direct, & Star in a solo Batman movie. I bet him a pair of IMAX tickets to the movie if I was wrong.

        Those are all fantastic books. My favorites have been Titans, Batman, Detective, Superman, Action, Hal Jordan, Nightwing, The Flash, and Wonder Woman. Mister Miracle is probably the best non-Rebirth comic. Most of them are great, to be honest. It's rare to read a bad comic right now.

        Metal is fantastic!!! Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are the Batman dream team. Even the tie-ins have been amazing! You don't normally see tie-ins that are equally amazing as the main story.

  Quite many people actually. One Batnews article written ages ago about if Ben was, "rumoured" to be leaving, I straight up said if he were to leave then using Flashpoint to get a younger actor would be the best way to do it.
  People were talking about using the Lazarus Pit, or simply just change the actor as they did with Rhodey in Iron Man, without going too complicated with it. There were only a couple of others mentioning Flashpoint but that's about it.

Can we just scrap Flashpoint and make it a standalone Flash film with Flash vs The Rogues please? Flashpoint is a great story but i would rather his first film be something smaller what shows us his world rather then a film what is to Flash what Civil War was to Captain America.

  well, Infinity War is the culmination of 10 years worth of movies and building. So ya we all knew there was going to be an insane amount of hype for IW. And ya, unfortunately the hype just wasn't there for Justice League as we are now seeing with its incredibly underwhelming box office. This is in alrge part due to BvS. People just didn't like it. Some people did. But most didn't, and it killed a lot of the anticipation for JL. If you look back at the marketing for BvS, the hype was monumental for that film. Every new trailer was like an event where everybody and their mother was saying "OMG DID YOU SEE THE NEW BVS TRAILER HE HAD THE TDKR ARMOR BRUH ITS HAPPENING!!!!".

god I REALLY don't like that they are doing Flashpoint instead of just a regular Flash movie. I mean is the sole reason for doing this just so that they can replace Ben? I mean Flashpoint is an amazing story and I will love to see it but i REALLY want just a regular Flash movie where we can really get to know this Flash. I want to see him being Barry Allen. His relationship with Iris. His daily life. Not some mega dark doomsday time altering madness right off the bat.

  Flashpoint is a shit story that shits on most of its core characters. Barry is an idiot. WW and Aquaman are bloodthirsty monsters. Thomas Wayne is ridiculous.
  From the character perspective, it only makes sense to do when Barry is young and impulsive because only such a person would do what he did, not a seasoned grown up hero.

      That's a stupid, unsubstantiated point. It asks you to believe that all it took Wonder Woman to become a mass murderer was never meeting Superman. Try and tell that to the general movie goers with a straight face. You'll be buried alive. As of now, Gadot is a bigger symbol of hope than Cavill ever was.
      And I could go on. It makes no sense for Thomas Wayne to dress like a bat if he is just going to straight up shoot people on the spot. That was never the point of dressing as a bat for Batman. And it makes no sense that saving Barry's mom somehow influenced Sups' pod's trajectory.

        Is this the plan in your mind or did WB reveal something that I’m not aware of? If I was going to speculate I would go a completely different direction. I would have Jeffrey Dean Morgan appear as Thomas Wayne along with Ben Affleck and whoever the younger version of Batman will be in the same movie as a send off to Ben and introduction to the new Batman.

      Like I said before I would go with a young unknown who fits the part aesthetically. Someone under 30 that would basically sign his life away for ten years and just focus on being The Batman primarily ( something Ben refused to do). I like Ham a lot but Reeves wants a trilogy that is still a few years away and a 46 year old is not a good fit for that imo but 15 years ago, he would have been great!

  Honestly, he's the one of the only good options. Jason O'Mara would be good too. He already has experience doing the voice and he'd look pretty good as Batman.

    I see a little bit of Michael Keaton in him there.
    Visually, like Keaton, he would be unconventional, which may turn people off after all the praise over how Ben is the spitting image of how we classically imagine Batman looking.
    I think he has a neat look, though, with strong eyes. His voice experience with the character is a big bonus, and it's excellent for my preferred style of Batman, which is quieter and a little more ominous and intelligent.

Well, this sucks and confirms what most of us thought all along. Ben lost interest the moment BvS bombed critically and did not meet box office expectations. But to be honest I have zero interest in seeing a watered down version of Batman that we got in JL. The two reasons I loved Ben the most was first he sold me as Bruce Wayne perfectly and was the first Batman that I ever saw on camera that did not look like an actor in a Batman suit but literally looked like what Batman would look like if he was real in every way. I loved the viciousness he brought, the beastly intimidation, the Batcave, Batmobile, Batwing and especially the relationship/casting of Irons as well. It was the first time I felt like I witnessed an authentic Batman on screen and WB execs took it all away. I have no idea why people are on this Jake G. hall train right now either, I have zero interest in reverting to a barely 6' foot batman that currently weighs 170 after watching a powerhouse like Ben. Even if he put on 25lbs, he's still be a shrimp compared to Ben. I hope they just cast an unknown who's under 30 that fits the part and can fully commit and sign his life away to the role for the next 10 years. I though a Matt Reeves Batman with Ben would have been great but I guess Ben lied again about his willingness to work with Reeves after all.

  im not sure of the studio was to blame for how Batman was handled in JL. I mean aside from a few added jokes, it seems like Batman's role in that film mostly remained the same.

    Dude, if you couldn’t tell the difference between the Batman in the opening scene of JL against some old man to the Batman in BvS then you need to get your eyes check. That old man would last 2 seconds against BvS Batman. The choreography was awful and looked like it belonged in Gotham.

      did you decide that before or after you found out it was directed by Whedon? Anyways I liked the scene. Pretty batmany scene if you ask me. Not an intense batman vs 24 thugs in a confined area type scene, but clearly it wasn't supposed to be. And that scene was added in during the reshoots so not its like they took anything away. Also, that guy wasn't what I would call old.

        I hated that scene the moment I saw it and new immediately that was not Zack’s filming. Have you actually seen Zack’s fight choreography in his other movies? He takes a back seat to nobody when it comes to fight choreography. You might like a thug shooting a gun into a water barrel that squirts him in the eye like a Tom and Jerry cartoon forcing him to drop his gun but I have zero interest in that kind of nonsense. Obviously we have very different taste when it comes to action. I’m interested in John Wick Action not The lone Ranger.

The warehouse fight was obviously way better but not every scene has to be super intense with batman thrashing dudes left and right. Sure it was a tad cartoonish(not in a bad way to me. It felt very comic booky.). Honestly the only thing I didn't like about that scene was that I found it strange that they would introduce us to a parademon right in the beginning of the movie. Honestly I think you are being EXTREMELY irrational. Just because its not as intense as the stuff we saw in BvS doesn't mean you should outright hate the scene. Like seriously wtf? Could they have given him more to do and some cooler scenes? Absolutely. Is his batman suddenly ruined? No. Why would you think that?         First off, where did I bring up the warehouse seen? You jumped to conclusions on your own. There was a hell of a lot more in BvS that I liked about Batman action sequences. I guess you didn’t see the fight (choreography) between Batman and Superman or maybe you didn’t see the car chase seen or the break in to Lex Corp in the UE because all those stunts and additional fight scenes are responsible for MY OPINION not just one scene so get that in your skull!         You criticize my comprehension yet you have the exact same problem. I clearly stated in my last comment that I was referring to all of the Batman action scenes and not just the warehouse one. I NEVER said you were specifically talking about the warehouse scene only. I said that it was implied that you were taling about the warehouse scene AS WELL as all the others when you compare the batman scenes from JL and BvS and talk about choreography and all that.         It was a more than legitimate and fair assumption that when referring to the comparison between the action scenes in Jl vs BvS, one of the scenes that fell into the latter category is what you were talking about(along with the BvS fight and the batmobile scene). Obviously, the warehouse scene would have been implied and it's perfectly rational to assume as such. Anyways, I am not even sure why you are getting so mad. If you hadn''t noticed, we actually share similar opinions. We both liked Snyder's work and we both loved Batman in BvS and we were both disappointed in how he was handled in Justice League. We are in the same boat bro. The only difference is that I am hopeful for the future where as I feel your concerns are blown out of proportion. Im not insulting or criticizing you.         No. We don’t see eye to eye at all when it comes to JL. When I say I will never watch that film again I mean it. JL is the first movie in all of Zack’s DC films that has zero rewatch ability for me. And I’ll never take likely to anyone telling me how I should or shouldn’t feel. If I say I hate something it’s because I do, if I say that I like or love something it’s not hyperbole. And I won’t be hopeful about the DCEU until I see great films that don’t get interference from dumb ass execs who pretty much ruined both BvS and JL. They basically spit on the faces of the fan base that supported them the most and instead of allowing Zack’s true vision for his trilogy come to fruition they ruined it and all that loyalty went out the window for me now. I’ll believe it when I see it and nothing else.

        I didn’t like BvS TC either, it was a poorly constructed film with really cool moments but the UE fixed all the pacing and editing issues, plot holes and cohesive film structure that made it a good movie. It did not fix the characterization that people hated E.G grumpy, mopey Superman... And I get that, it’s no different then how I hated the cartoony Batman in the opening sequence of JL after watching a hardcore badass caped crusader. I understand why people hate mischaracterization very well, different strokes for different folks as the saying goes. It’s no different then how I feel about Burton’s first Batman now after watching Heath Ledger in TDK. You couldn’t pay me to watch Jack as the Joker after that, might as well be Adam West’s Batman TV show with Cesar Romano. BvS changed Batman forever now for me and anything not in that vain I have zero interest now.

Well, that's where you're wrong. He couldn't act even if his life depended on it. They can use him as a stunt double but not as the lead actor. And plus with a name like his, he wouldn't be able to carry a franchise on his own like many hollywood A-list actors can.

  Oh is that so? Well my judgement is backed up by facts whereas your opinion just seems to be biased, he's a shit actor. As for my argument about his name, Scott Adkins, sure people know him because of the Undisputed movies, his Yuri Boyka character. That's all he's famous for, if he was a powerhouse or a household name he'd be appearing in big hollywood movies, certainly there's a factor in there not letting him do so and that's acting.
  He's lacking badly in that department, packing an emotional range of a brick wall, he knows his fighting styles I'll give him that but that's all he's good for. Do you really believe that he'd keep on starring in straight to dvd movies all these years if he could do better? He appeared in Marvel's Doctor Strange as a henchman to the main villain, but Marvel knew he's a piss poor actor so they gave his character no lines and just some action choreography. Open your eyes. An actor of his caliber should stay where is doing what he does best.

I liked Batffleck a lot but since BvS i knew that he wasn't going to stick because 1. Affleck life is a Mess 2. He is getting too old 3. He probably like the role but not enough to commit to 6, 7 or 8 movies for 10 years like he would probably need to, i just hope they can choose someone who can be a worthy replacement, Jake Gyllenhall would be a good choice.

First, they remove him from the position of director.
Second, they discard their script.
Finally, they want to get him out of the main character... I imagine he will also stop being the producer.
All this makes me think that the Warner would be giving a balonazo in the face to good Ben...

I hope that Batfleck leaves in a congruent and dignified way for both the character and the actor.
On the other hand, after everything that Matt Reeves declared about Affleck, I'm a bit disappointed to know that he does not want it for the character.

Well Mr. Affleck it's been a bumpy ride, you had your ups and downs but in all honesty I'll miss you. Greatest Batman portrayal ever on the silver screen, I just wish it was a Batman that implemented his legendary rule and not a psycho killer like each one before, would've given him something to stand out, besides the awesome fight scenes. Hopefully the new actor will give a shit during the interviews and actually talk about and promote the movie he's starring in and not look like he's having the worst day of his life. Hopefully the next actor will stay in peak physical condition and be passionate and dedicated to both the character and his fans and not make headlines doing god knows what.

A bit disappointing because I really enjoyed his portrayal in BvS, however he seemed to have little passion for the role in Justice League, even though I feel like he was a bit out of character in that movie. That being said, if Affleck doesn't want to do it or isn't hyped about it then he shouldn't.
But can someone explain to me how Flashpoint makes perfect sense when to recast him? I've only seen the animated movie. As I recall there is a different Batman in the alternate timeline but it's the original Batman when Flash returns to his initial timeline. Only Barry went missing.

  I figure they could do it like this, movie begins, Flash is talking to Bruce(Ben Affleck) in the batcave, something happens, he's in the alternate timeline where he meets Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Thomas Wayne/Batman. By the time he comes back, he either somehow changes something in that alternate timeline(butterfly effect?) or they just act like Affleck never existed and he comes to the batcave to bring the Thomas's letter to the Batman and there's a new Batman sitting in the chair. Idk just an idea.

    Yea, I could see that being the route they take but it seems more jarring than just letting some else take over, ya know? It doesn't have to be in the same movie. Unless they change up the story a bit and it's about changing some kind of event in the current timeine and Barry tries to stop that from happening and instead he ends up in an alternate universe that would make things change in the timeline he's familiar with. I think they should just recast without making a plot point within a movie. But that's just me.

So assuming that they plan to transition Affleck out with Flashpoint, I'm not really confident that WB can do it in a way that won't confuse and/or piss people off. Seems like a really delicate thing to try to pull off, I don't know why they wouldn't simply recast the role.

  At least Flashpoint can give the audience a reason why we are seeing a possibly younger different Batman.
  Simply replacing and not even acknowledging will do precisely that.

    I mean, we didn't need an explanation in the 90's. Val Kilmer was nine years younger then Michael Keaton. I think people understand that Batman is a legacy role at this point.

      That can be for 3 reasons. Comic book movies weren't as popular, comic book movies were barely held to a standard and the internet was barely available to anyone. Everyone and their mothers are on social media today so displeasure and disappointment will spread way quicker, and more vocal. Do you not remember the huge outrage when Ben Affleck got announced? People care.
