Warner Bros. is restructuring DC Films after 'Justice League' stumbles

It's no secret that Justice League hasn't performed well at the box office, and just like they did after the Batman v Superman backlash, Warner Bros. is shaking things up once again at DC Films.

Variety reports that DC Films head Jon Berg will be leaving his position. His partner Geoff Johns will remain at DC Films, but Variety notes that his role could be lessened and more advisory in nature.

And speaking of DC Films, Warner Bros. president Toby Emmerich is thinking about integrating the DC division tighter with Warner Bros., which would include moving them into the same building. DC Films currently operates in a separate building on the Warner Bros. lot.

It's no surprise to learn that Time Warner, Warner Bros.' parent company, is unhappy with the financial performance of Justice League. The parent company is also reportedly unhappy with Warner Bros. for bringing director Zack Snyder back after Batman v Superman.

All of the changes at DC Films are expected to happen by January.

At this point I don't even know what to think anymore. I think most people (including myself) felt that the characters in JL were well done, so why can't we just continue forward with these characters? The problem with JL was their meddling and the solution to their problem is to stop conflicting with the director's vision.

    I really don't understand people who say that Death of Superman is one of his greatest stories. Doomsday just pops out of a hole in the ground and beats up the justice league while Superman is doing a talk show, there's a bizarre subplot involving mutants living under Metropolis, and then Superman goes to fight Doomsday. There's not really any thematic build up to his death. It's mostly fun action involving people who aren't Superman getting the crap kicked out of them by Doomsday. The threat of Doomsday amounts to "Golly gee! This Doomsday guy sure packs a wallop! Can Superman beat him?" Then Superman and Doomsday awkwardly collide together and he's just dead.
    DoS and For the Man Who Has Everything comic are two stories I just don't get what's so good about them. The JLU cartoon version of FMWHE is fantastic through.

  "Supermans best storyline was wasted in the second movie" Since when did BvS adapt All Star Superman? Seriously that's considered by many to be the "best" Superman story of them all, Death Of Superman is good but its just a drawn out fight between Supes and Doomsday what was done much better in Hunter/Prey and last year in the first Arc of Action Comics.

  No it wouldn't off, you realize the general audience (AKA the people who bring in the money) don't know or care for Snyder and that they barely know or care for JL's BTS troubles. All they had to go on and cared for was trailers and what ever review appeared in the newspaper they read, if anything the film might have done worse because i suspect critics would have tougher on what ever bullshit Snyder put out. Anyway a big reason the film has done poorly is because BvS wasn't that liked what impacted the hype for JL.

  Just read the article. Looks like Berg is gone and Johns' power will be diminished again. Thank goodness. Berg obviously isn't very good at his job. Johns didn't stand up to the execs so fuck him. He didn't oppose the two-hour mandate or say chasing fresh tomoatoes was a bad idea. The guy has no business being in the film business. That has been proven time and time again. Green Lantern? Batman v Superman? Justice League? He's promoting them when he should have simply passed or told the suits off. A happy, jokey Justice League? Fuck off. No leadership qualities there. Good riddance.
  I want to hear that Tsujihara and Emmerich are soon to be fired. I hope those fuckers are both on thin ice. If the execs at Time Warner are pissed off, you better believe that they could pull the trigger at any point. Those two are the ones who are really destroying DC Films. FUCK THEM!       I'm sure that they're talking, but until the suit is resolved (and I get paid) it's really not a "done deal". But at the same time the guy AT&T is bringing in to oversee TimeWarner isn't a Hollywood guy at all, so he'll probably not be much of a studio leader.

This is just getting so sad yet so so predictable. Seriously could they be any more embarassing. Every time a movie does not work "everyone just loses their minds!" (Heath Ledger Joker voice) and they throw everything out the window instead of just actually developing a long term narrative and vision and trust in it. Its becoming so painfully true what James Gunn said about Marvels success coming from having someone like Kevin Feige. Obviously DC is in DESPERATE need of their own Feige.
But all they ever do is react, react, react with every next movie becoming more about damage control then actually developing the narrative and promising people that things will get better. And with every movie they say "Don't worry this one will be soooooo much different then the last one that failed". I mean James Wan literally said that about Aquaman just like Snyder said it about Justice League.
DC/Warners utter incompetence and lack of vision is just making me cry right now. How long do we still have to endure this goddamn mediocrity and creative chaos ?

    Sorry but no. Snyder is a good director but he is not a good writer.. all the films that he made good critics wasnt his own scripts. Snyder is not nolan, when he writes he came with stupid ideas like Sucker punch, to allow him to write the BvS story was a great mistake. WB doenst have a great eye when choosing projects, just because some wise people steps in doesnt mean you have to allow every director to do his own thing. Zack had his chance with sucker punch and failed, then they choose him to visually narrate Man of steel and the films was good (the story was made by goyer), but.. Nolan allowed him to make killing Zod was a mistake. I keep wondering why WB allowed him to make a decosntructive version of batman? destroying the symbol. Still I believe he is a great director, he visually created the best Batman and action secuences, also great visual moments. But twrite the characters what a big mistake... still give him a good script and he can make wonders. So to choose him as director wasnt a mistake, to give him a chance of create his own story was. How come those stupids execs didnt see that coming when he has all that history of crudeness and violence? they dont read the scripts? they are some assholes if they agreed on those stories, didnt they read JL script before? they dont know about cinema and and have not common sense.

      They readed the script and agreed on making Batman a jerk, they broke the entire batman symbol. Look Batman is an established character with unremovable values, you simple cant mess with this paradigma. Later on they allow him to kill superman, using a lot of interesting stories that can make it into a single JL film; JL DOOMSDAY... and no, they killded the character before he even got a chance to convince people he was this beacon of hope to the world. clearly the person who had an eye on this project commited a great mmistake and that was Greg Silverman, later on again you bring Jon Berg and he starts making thise changes i Jl to make it more wheddonish, and he starst on making plans of several film with this new tone... I dont know who idea was this, if Tsuhijara, Berg, Geoff, who knows..but some people need to go.

  I've seen Justice League 3 times. I like the movie. I think the movie is good. That's the problem, though. I should've had my mind blown and been totally in love with the movie. It's an F-ing JUSTICE LEAGUE movie! And now, it's going to make less money than an R rated Deadpool movie. Let that sink in for a bit.

        Yes it will be hard work. They have to get their shit to gether but this time right from the beginning. They need to be on the same page with the director right from the start of shooting. They need to compromise from the beginning. So that in the end they wont be shocked from the result and feel the need to change everything last minute. They need to know everything thats going on so they can go to the director at the right time and maybe make compromises when there is enough time. I am not saying they shoul restrain the director just saying they need to talkopenly what both of them expect and how to compromise.

    I think they meant that the DC Films offices would be moved in with the WB offices, not the entirety of DC Entertainment (which would bring Lee and DiDio as well as Diane Nelson). I believe there's still quite an attitude at WB towards DCE as essentially just being a storehouse of IP wealth for the company, but with little regard for the comics themselves, etc. And I'm willing to bet that the attitude towards Diane (regardless of her actual merit and accomplishments) is that she's the exec in charge of putting Batman on lunchboxes.
    Really, Jon Berg's role was supposed to be the movie guy, while Johns' role was as the guy who knew the comics and who would bring the films (and TV) more in sync with them. Berg seemed cool on Twitter; I hate to see him go. Plus, as a stockholder, I am not comforted by the idea of the execs in New York getting wound up about Zack Snyder like they're some of the maniacs who post here.

    Well put my friend. I agree I think people are reading this wrong. Imagine having a subsidiary that you own right and the Boston at subsidiary with a v p whatever you do not get along with and the long-distance puts more of a strain on the professional relationship that you guys have. Bringing them closer together will fix this even though they may not get along at all allow for more of a better flow to make these projects with they should be.

      I like how you ignore the list of the decisions that WB has made up to this point. Is he blameless for some of his own decisions? No. He talked to Nolan about the pros and the cons, but he still made the decision that he thought was best.

        So true, everyone drones on about the images he puts out but forget 95% of them are cut and paste from the comics, yes they look pretty and Snyder does do a good job at getting the look right but its not his stuff at all. I've seen people praise dialogue from BvS in the Bats Vs Supes fight but ignore that most of that was dialogue Miller wrote for TDKR what Snyder just took for the fight. People say Snyder made a "masterpiece" in Watchmen but the thing is he didn't, his version misses a lot of what made the book so special and the stuff what was done right was just taking from the book, the only thing i can praise Snyder for with Watchmen was some of his casting choices (and i mean only some) and that he captured most of the visuals quite well from the book.

He was hyping the film because that's what makers of films do around the films release, he also gave his thoughts on what he thought would happen but as we know Snyder never defined him, if he did then MoS2 would be happening 100% for sure but as it is it seems very unlikely, the only time Cavil connected with the public as SM was during JL when Whedon was writing him.
        Show me Nolan's thoughts on BvS and MoS now and not release where he's not allowed to say anything bad.

To this point, even those of us that hated DCEU, argued that with a good director Cavil can make a fantastic Superman....But maybe he can't? I'm starting to suspect more and more that he is just an average actor with the looks. Yes, he is charming and likable, but that's not enough for Superman. Superman is charismatic, above all. A regular likable guy is not enough to inspire hope in me. So maybe, Cavil also belongs in the long list of miscast characters for this fukin universe.

    I'm pretty sure in an interview Snyder said the idea was tossed around while he was present. Not sure if he came up with it. Regardless, the studio could have axed that if they wanted to but honestly, it wasn't a bad idea. Batman was a super hot billion dollar property at the time and everybody was familiar with him.

  I have no problem with the first three, and in fact a lot of people wanted that. When they made Man of Steel, they were listening to years of audience demand and feedback.
  It was the right choice in terms of storytelling integrity, and it was the logical marketing choice given the climate at the time. It was made, unfortunately, in response to what we now see is a very fickle, hypocritical society. The goal was to please us, and they did what appeared to be what everyone wanted. I cannot hold that against them, even if it didn't work out.
  Fourth one, I don't think it's unreasonable for them to ask Snyder to pare back BvS from being 3 hours in theaters. I also don't think it hurt the movie as dramatically as others feel.
  JL though, totally different ball game. That kind of movie absolutely needs the time, and they should have known better. Even the first Avengers, which had a string of origin movies leading up to it (so it had a much lighter storytelling burden), ran at 2 hours and 23 minutes.

Oh, for the love of...
Most of the criticism of JL was connected to aspects caused by the <2-hour runtime, which, if the prevailing knowledge is to be believed, is 100% Kevin Tsujihara’s fault.
Poor character development? Ten, fifteen minutes total for more focus on Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman, and Superman would have fixed that.
Terrible villain? More time, about five minutes, to explain more about where Steppenwolf was coming from and who Darkseid is could have EASILY fixed that.
Rushed plot? Ten minutes more spent elaboration on the sad state of a Superman-less world, another scene of information on the Mother Boxes, and a little more breathing time between the tunnel fight, Superman’s return, and the final battle would have fixed that 100%.
That’s about 25-30 minutes added to the movie that would have made it better.
This isn’t Johns’ or Berg’s fault. This is a corporate meddling issue. I hate to bring this up, but one of the reasons Marvel has had such drastic success is that Disney has mostly let them do their own thing. Marvel has succeeded when Feige and his directors are left alone by the likes of the Marvel Creative Committee, and the same holds true for Patty Jenkins on Wonder Woman.
I believe Zack Snyder had a unique Superman trilogy planned, where Superman discovered who he was, worked to inspire the world to reach new heights, died because of his altruism, inspired people to do better because of his sacrifice, and came back as the Superman we all know and love, emboldened by the inspiration the new heroes took from him. We still more or less got that, but the meddling on Justice League (and to a lesser degree, BvS) tainted that ambitious storyline. I am... disappointed, to say the least. And this latest news is not a good sign.

It's hard to see how the DCEU can be saved. Several entries in and most have under performed and been critically panned. How can more movies be made for a franchise that is clearly unpopular and associated with failure? I hate to be a pessimist but I think to face facts it will be hard to shift these audience perceptions of the DCEU. Most people expect a DC movie these days to be both bad and be a box office dud, that it is surprising when an entry like Wonder Woman defies these expectations. Does anyone really hold much hope for Aquaman?

I still haven't quite gotten over the whiplash from the change in tone between BvS and JL (granted, I only saw it 2 weeks ago, but still). Say what you will, but I would have happily seen a true follow-up to BvS multiple times in theaters. With JL, I'm probably going to wait until Amazon Video puts it on sale before buying the home release. This was a serious mishandling of a property IMO. I'm severely disappointed.
Edit: I'm still excited for Aquaman, Shazam, etc. But I was very excited for JL, and I got let down hard.

I laid Jon Berg out on Twitter, for him and Geoff Johns being so f**king quiet after Justice League. Yes, WB absolutely needs a Feige for their DC Films. I still think that Geoff Johns can be a good part-time consultant for stories and scripts. But WB will need an alpha male, that can run a good creative team. A group of innovative people, who have good taste in movies, and cool ideas on how to translate the DC characters to the big screen, for the mainstream audience.
Rebirthing the DCEU: In the comics, DC Rebirth was basically a soft reboot. An admission that The New 52 was a mistake, but not completely acting as if it never happened. Being able to cherrypick some of the good stuff that's already been established, while moving forward.

James Gunn and the Russo brothers at least seem like they were given some creative freedom, by Marvel. I expect WB to give Patty Jenkins plenty of freedom with Wonder Woman 2. They just need someone who can make sure that a DC script is good enough BEFORE production starts. Making sure that most of the good ideas and scenes make it into the theatrical version of the movie, instead of being cut for unknown reasons. Getting the best out of the directors, cinematographers, costume designers, and special effects people, during pre and post production.

    Terrio and Snyder already had this movie underway. If they wanted Snyder off project, they should have just done it. They knew what they were going to get with Snyder, they shouldn't have waited til principle photography was finished, they should have brought on Whedon as soon as the reception of BvS came out (Which WB dropped the ball on too, by the way) pushed the movie back 4 months, released in March 2018, given Whedon the time needed to do it brighter and adapt the script properly and make a good job of it. But they left it too late to do anything about it and then decided to release on schedule so the execs could get their bonuses. Which ever way you look at it, WB were making the decisions, and they made the wrong ones.
    If you're WB and you decide "Hey, we can't get rid of Snyder because it'll look bad" then you're stuck with him, would it really have been more of a failure than this? I doubt it.
    The takeaway from here is that the CGI is poor, the plot is weak, the story is inconsistent and the characters are great but under-developed. If Snyder had finished, all you would have had is "the movie is too dark" or "thats not my Superman" which we've already heard before.

      Yeah you're absolutely right about this... if you look at Marvel process everytime a director fail to deliver a good "product" he takes the door... remember Favreau after IM 2 ? Whedon after Avengers AOU ? Or Alan Taylor after Thor : The Dark World ? That's what I'm talking about! You have to get rid of a director who can't deliver snyder already had a Red flag with MoS but no WB keep him for BvS and they did the same a third time! What the hell ? They don't give a shit about their characters! They knew Snyder and his team would fuck it up again... and look at where we are now... what a mess, that's an humiliation.

  At least if they did let Snyder do his JL, it would've hit way better at the box office numbers.
  They don't understand that LOTS of people love Snyder's movies. MOS, as a Superman reboot + first (even tho not planned yet) of the DCCU made +660m!! It's more than Iron Man, Thor, & Captain America together, (or around). Then BvS that hit even harder, making it a great debute for the DCCU. Suicide Squad would've probably hit the billions if it was also released in China + if Ayer could've done what he wanted with it. If he could've followed Snyder's plans which WB screwed with. And then WW (which I didn't like), but did follow Snyder's vision (Story by), which did great as well. I really don't get it. Disney took 4 years to build up their MCU and Warner expected to hit that BO level in 2 years? Fucking morons. Retarded af.

    The general audience doesn't even know who Tsujihara is. They will never understand how all of this os connected. All they know they fell a sleep at bvs and now avoid everything that has to do with it.

  You think people don't notice the director's name on the movie they go to watch? You're delusional. JL was advertised as a direct sequel to BvS. People knew that and gave it the finger.
  Of course, if the movie turned out good, it would have recovered somewhat and had good legs, but the initial no-show says it all.

  I just don't see why they kept Snyder in the first place after BvS. They should have taken him off EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY regardless if he was to blame for the movie (he wasn't completely) and got someone else. It would have saved them a lotta money if they did and it would have saved us a horrendous Frankenstein monstrous film mess.
  Since they DID end up keeping Snyder, they should have just bitten the bullet and stuck with his vision and save money on those dumb reshoots. The movie couldn't do any worse at this point, so at the very least they would have saved 50 million+.

      But that didn't stop WB from canning Superman Lives or Justice League: Mortal - both of which were mere weeks away from shooting before the plug was pulled.
      From the sounds of both of them, it seems like WB actually made a good choice doing so...
      So it befuddles me why they couldn't do it again if they smelled trouble ahead. It was just stupid beyond belief. And since they didn't pull the plug, then the least they could have done is STUCK IT OUT till Snyder was finished instead of flushing an extra 50+ million down the toilet on terrible reshoots and CG mustaches.

        Indeed the Writer's Strike made things difficult, but that didn't mean they had to cancel it indefinitely because the script was done, if I remember correctly. I'll have to look back at it to see for sure.
        And as for Superman Lives, that was the farthest they got, but I mean... The amount of aborted projects... I mean, even JJ Abrams' Superman Flyby got far enough to have half the cast pretty much locked down (one of which included our current Superman Henry Cavill), so WB has a very long history of shutting down superhero films when they're fairly far through pre-production.
