Warner Bros. is planning 'Wonder Woman' Oscar campaign for Best Picture

Wonder Woman is the biggest movie of the summer, and is one that is loved by both critics and fans alike. According to Variety, Warner Bros. is planning on using this momentum to launch an Oscar campaign. They hope that Wonder Woman can be the first comic book movie nominated for Best Picture.

Variety says that Warner Bros. will also be campaigning to get Patty Jenkins a nomination for Best Director. That would also be a first. No director of a comic book movie has ever been nominated for an Oscar. Not even Christopher Nolan.

Warner Bros. has launched Oscar campaigns for superhero movies in the past, including The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, but they were unsuccessful. Could Wonder Woman break the comic book movie trend at the Oscars? We'll have to wait and see. Nominations won't be out until early next year.

    There are films that aren´t based on comics, you know? I am the first to praise comics as a medium (i even read them weekly...) and even the 6 times academy nominated Road to Perdition is based on a DC book but blockbusters rarely make for a top 5 films of the year list. Too many masters to please and all of that.

  Was Logan really that good? It seemed to have just a tad more story than Mad Max, which had literally no story & got hailed as a classic. I think a lot of times someone makes a silent film, or black & white, or noir or genre flick. And because it's different everyone seems to get in line to say it's amazing. Even though it's very basic. I cried at the end of Logan as the last shot is great, but as a story it doesn't even compare to WW.

      I've been feeling that way about Wonder Woman lately. Mostly because people want it to be something groundbreaking when I'd argue other then bringing WW into the film world, it isn't.

      None of these are historic film if rated on their merit as film alone (all get about a 8/10 from me). Especially on repeat viewing BUT i am more than glad that all got made. They certainly pushed the genre hard and WW did a lot for the Blockbuster glass ceiling and casting non-US/UK actors as leads.

    it was hands down one of the most boring superhero movies ever made. right up there with Iron Man 2. you're right about it having a tad more story than Mad Max. unfortunately it didn't have anywhere near the high quality action that Mad Max had to make up for it. And the Wolverine clone? Dude, Zack Snyder wishes he could be that unsubtle...

      Yes, it has a beginning middle & end. Logan & Mad Max don't have that & somehow they are epic. It's like people claiming the wine that costs £100 is better than a bottler that cost £1 even though they can't really say why.

  I loved Logan but...I loved Wonder Woman more. My reasoning is simply down to how I felt leaving the theater. Logan left me feeling sad because, while the movie was amazing, I knew I had just seen two fine actors give their last performances in roles that they had made into their own. Wonder Woman left me feeling elated because it was such a fantastic ride and is only just the beginning.

    It's an extremely long shot for any of it. Thoroughly enjoyed this film. Favorite superhero film of the year so far (yes, thought it was better than Logan, which I loved as well). But Oscar worthy ? Nah.

        Though I guess there's a small chance Patty might be considered for something like a Golden Globe if she's extremely lucky and if the campaign is very successful.

    Moonlight only came together for me in the 3rd act, as the 3 actors thing is a double edged sword, but it´s indeed worth your time. It winning also spared us a LaLa Land win. Ha.
    Hacksaw Ridge and Arrival were the best films on the list.

        Not anymore Transformers: The Last Knight has grossed $128.8 million in the United States and Canada. Compare that to previous years people are getting smart about that franchise. Many people like explosions and fireworks.
        Moonlight made what less then 30 million? It is not a film that many generally would enjoy that is the end of it or heard of.
        But please I want to keep demolishing your logic.

    TDK only reached that first DC billion due to reentering the cinemas twice btw. It´s Blu-ray sales though destroyed the higher grossing Rises.

  Maybe for costume design, and sound editing (though it literally has no chance against Dunkirk on this regard). Relaunching it would prove inefective against Star Wars, since that would destroy any kind of big budgeted action movie at the time, especially a movie that would have already gotten it's due time in theaters.

THIS particular year, two comic book movies have a legitimate shot. Both Wonder Woman and Logan, were pretty beloved by the critics. Other than Get Out, not a ton of competition this year...so far.

  I thought LOGAN was alright to good. I didn't think it was amazing. It's clearly made a serious effort to be more than just a superhero film, but I didn't think it was that ambitious in exploring ideas.
  But yeah, probably the best comicbook film so far this year.

    look at the budgets for Jackman's standalone films. Logan had the least $$ to play with, so, in that sense it was ambitious. It's more important as a lesson for hollywood that there's no sense in smacking PG-13 on every cape film as the audience is much broader.

      I suppose I'm comparing LOGAN to other great comicbook films, like TDK, BEGINS, or CIVIL WAR.
      Perhaps LOGAN is ambitious for a comicbook film, but not as a film, as in exploring themes, ideas and allegories.

        The thing is, Logan doesn't even bother exploring interesting or intricate ideas. The movie just thinks it does by virtue of existing. Don't get me wrong, I liked it (more than WW), but it's not anywhere close the "thoughtful" movie everyone keeps saying it is. It's just very serious and graphic, and people mistake that for intellectual richness. Each time the movie presents something interesting, like Charles not being able to forgive his past actions, or Wolverine not being able to accept a family, or not thinking one deserves happiness, it just never goes anywhere. The movie clearly doesn't even know what story or message it wants to tell. Begins and TDK and even TDKR had far better and more original storylines with more interesting and more developed themes.
        Logan is a very good movie... but it's without a doubt also the most overrated CBM I can think of, with maybe the exception of the first Avengers, which I thought was extremely mediocre.

        I completely agree. I watched it only after the hype around it died down (one of your comments on here actually spoiled Logan's death for me, haha) and although the ascetic is dark and serious, I didn't think it tried to tell us something more.
        When you think about the trilogy, you think of its feat in other areas too. Soundtrack, mixing, editing, script, dialogue, extensive character arcs, cinematography, intellectual underpinnings and camerawork (Nolan's use of screen direction in the 'Interrogation' scene makes it my favorite Batman scene of all time).
        Say what you want about BvS, at least it tries to be ambitious in some of these areas. It's just that it has more profound problems elsewhere.

        I completely agree... Which is why I still watch the movie from time to time. After seeing WW (and the ending was also spoiled, but by YouTube videos :p) I was disappointed. Sure, the movie's fine... but I don't think it's worth the critical praise it received. I enjoyed it, and while Gal's performance wasn't great, it was still leagues beyond anything I was hoping for to be honest. But it's not a movie I intend on seeing ever again. At least not in the close future. BvS, while extremely flawed in so many areas, actually tried to be unique and layered. While Snyder's pseudo-intellectualism is annoying at times, I thought he improved massively from MoS to BvS in that regard.

        Yeah you did, but it's all good man. You did put "spoiler alert", but my eyes were inadvertently able to track the words in the line directly below it - "When Logan dies in the end..." Maybe several line spaces after the alert would've helped, but it's all good man. I had a feeling he would shuffle off his mortal coil.
        Totally. It's funny, I really dislike BvS, yet I do still watch it. Maybe that's because of Batman, maybe it's because I want to develop my film critiquing skills - who knows. Snyder did have a vision, and it's clear that he wants to develop big themes about gods and monsters, humanitarian interventions, and civil liberties. I just think he doesn't show the discipline to carry it through coherently in the film.
        WW is a good movie. I do like it. But I did think Act Three was problematic. The dialogue wasn't as pithy and clever as I would have liked it to be either.

        Yeah, but he said the movie was also about one's mortality or more specifically growing old... as well as a movie about family... and happiness... and a ton of other things. To me it's very clear that Logan just simply doesn't know what it wants to be. As a result, it doesn't commit to any one overarching theme which leaves the film in a disjointed state. It's a good movie, but when you over-analyse it, the flaws become extremely apparent.

I think if The Dark Knight didn't win Best Picture then no other comic book movie will win it. And if that happens and a comic book movie wins it then it would be really unfair for TDK.
Wonder Woman was a good movie but it was hyped coz of a good female superhero and female Director.

      The Academy, a bunch of Hollywood elites from the age of 'traditional cinema', were incredulous that Nolan was brazen enough to elevate a comicbook film into a serious crime drama. They just couldn't allow a story about a man dressing up as a bat enter their exclusive club.
      THE DARK KNIGHT will stand the test of time, and people will go back to watch the trilogy to understand the era we lived in. To understand frustration and alienation, radicalization and dogma, they'll watch BEGINS; 'the War on Terror', TDK; and the collapse of the political order and the rise of aggressive populism, TDKR.
      These movies are the 21st century.

        The suggestion that a century or era cannot be up for discussion holistically until it has ended defies all logic. We are living in the 21st century and can only give summation to the years that have existed. Putting reflection on hold for 80 years seems counterintuitive and summation cannot include elements outside the sum total anyway-- a common rule of discourse.         I'm only familiar with the usage of 21st century when it's a one-of-a-kind thing achieved since 2000. If I were to specifically talk about something spanning the century so far, I'd go with "the 2000's" and not say "the 21st century" unless I was aiming for intentional hyperbole.
        e.g., "These films are the 2000's!" This makes it clear that the claim isn't over the century but I guess I shouldn't be asking for clarity.
        When I read "These movies are the 21st century" I take it to mean that they define the century.
        This is the same kind of stupidity on the part of a critic who calls a certain movie "the best film you'll see this year" when they obviously haven't seen all the films that are yet to be released. Even if it's common usage it's still a logical fallacy

        Exactly. My first ever discussion with him was respectful, but everything after that was just exhausting. I don't like calling people out... constantly complaining and fighting, it just becomes tiresome. The last time we (Aqua and I, to be clear) had a discussion, I felt we both showed mutual respect, but with him I never know if that's just a temporary thing or if he's gonna flip the next time I say something he doesn't agree with. I always say, I don't hold grudges against anyone (not even him). Sometimes I feel like I acted unreasonable or like a douche, but then afterwards I at least try to correct that. I've never seen that type of self-reflection from him. Could be wrong, as we're talking about someone we've both never met... but judging from his comments, it seems he doesn't deal with differing opinions all that well.

  Sizable parts if the 2008 jury should be ineligible to vote by now due to the recent changes to the academy and they are bringing an a LOT of new blood. Takashi Miike of all people recently got an invitation for example. Still, the goal is to change by 2020. Be patient.
  WW itself is an agenda driven film, as are most Best Picture winners, so at least that part of the film will never have a problem with the jury. Walle (not even nominated for best picture and toon can) should have won that year but Slumdog Millionaire was pretty good too.

This is a political act. WB know it probably won't even get nominated for it.
In a year full negative stories about BvS, SS, JL and the DCEU (regardless of being true or false), this is an attempt by WB to build some positive momentum for the franchise in preparation for JL, and nothing does that more than associating the franchise with an Oscar.
There's nothing wrong in creating some feel good love for the DCEU. It needs it.

    At the very least I think WB are trying to tap into that movement, especially in light of the last few years where there has been agitation to make the Academy more diverse. They can sense which way the wind is blowing.

      There's nothing wrong with strong female roles. I always put Ripley as the beginning of the movement. There's been many over the years. We can even look at the last 2 Star Wars movies as doing the exact same. There seems to be this notion that Wonder Woman is a ceiling breaker, when it's already been broken beforehand.
      Plus, when you associate that type of weight onto a movie, someone who doesn't like it gets criticized as hating the "movement." Why can't the movie stand on its own instead of needing to be something more?

        I think most people are looking at Wonder Woman as a "ceiling breaker" in the worlds most popular movie genre, which it clearly is. The superhero/comic-book movie genre has been woeful in regards to female roles, especially roles of importance.
        Looking at female roles in the movie industry as a whole, yes, the hard work was done before by Sigourney Weaver and continued with Angelina Jolie, anyone over the age of 20 should probably know this. But what I'm not going to do is begrudge anyone, who liked Wonder Woman as a symbol of representation, their victory lap.
        I agree with part of your second point though, Wonder Woman has to stand on it's own as a movie first before anything else. And there's nothing wrong with not liking it as a movie, honestly, I personally still like BvS and Man of Steel more. I also think Suicide Squad is more fun, even if its a lesser movie. But it's bonafides as a "feminist" movie can't be ignored.

        Then I didn't express myself clearly; I'm not begrudging anyone who looks to the movie as a symbol of representation. One of my friends cried during the No Man's Land scene because of how happy she was. Just on the commercials alone, my 4yo daughter became a WW fan. My wife went from having no interest in the DCEU movies to wanting to see one.
        The articles I'm referring to aren't the ones limiting the ceiling breaking to comic book movies; those I get. It's the ones as a whole that I don't get. The movement has been around for decades, but people have short-term memories...and this one could prove the most successful.

        WB clearly want to trumpet this movie and bask in its winning summer. Again, there's nothing wrong in that. It creates an updraft for the DCEU and creates momentum for JL.

        Dude. Everybody knows DCEU is off to a shakey start, Marvel had similar troubles, but since they're cruising along now, Warner makes for starker contrast, i.e. news. It's obvious to see who the troll is here. Tentpoles like WW rarely win best picture: fact, and winning a tech oscar hardly labels a film "oscar material" as best hair and make-up hardly puts butts in seats. Dallas Buyers Club won for best hair and make-up and their budget was a $250. It's not what studios throw campaign money into the mix for.

    It's not the #1 movie of the summer. Guardians has made 860M, and Despicable Me 3 has made 819M. Wonder Woman is at ~790M. Just thought to point that out.

I liked Wonder Woman. It was very much in the tone of Donner's Superman. There were several parts that felt like the writer lifted from another movie for a character in another World War. It'll get buzz because of what people prop the movie up to be. I think Ripley set the path for strong female leads. The last 2 Star Wars films didn't shy away from it either.
It's hard for me to not back Logan for a nomination. Both could get nominations, but it's hard not to see Logan as the stronger film.

Oscars don't get given to the most popular blockbusters, that's why Christopher Nolan hasn't won best picture 3 times which I think he deserves. Wonder Woman is amazing imo - but the Oscar will most likely go to a film about a Black Transgender boy who wants to be a baseball player in space, but has to fight nazi's with his wooden leg - given to him by a polite Muslim.

I've seen WW three times in the cinemas, I love the film. That being said I have no problem with them "campaigning" but the academy still rubs it's nose at the superhero genre so probably not gonna happen. What I want to see happen is Andy Serkis get a nomination for Best Actor, the man is a genius and deserves it.

  It´s not. S01 is mostly set during issue 1 (and 2) of the book and is a hard-PG13 take on the source that doesn´t get or honer the source.
  S02 now started to adapt the book, but the changes from S01 make it unrecognizable and even hared to like. The show got a hugely negative reception from comic purist and i am willing to acknowledge basic quality but even i had to quit by now. 6/10

WW might qualify due to its quality and how its an inspiring story of an amazon woman fighting besides mere men. I'm assuming Dunkirk will be nominated for best picture, or at least for best editing and best sound. Logan and/or Split may get nominated for best picture but we'll have to see on those.
It's hard to predict what will get nominated. Many respected Hollywood critics thought TDK would of been nominated for best film back in 2008 but it wasn't. The list of nominated films sometimes fit a liberal agenda based trend or sometimes a "politically correct" theme. I'm not saying this to complain or anything like that. I just feel sometimes films or a film will be nominated despite an actual significant applause by critics.

  Even if it gets nominated, they won't get the award. The Academy is prejudiced against those kinds of films. The only reason that I think Avatar won awards is because of James Cameron. Even though I would take the effects of Star Trek over Avatar's stretched out Smurfs any day.

Nothing wrong with them going for it, if they're that confident in their movie then who is anyone to complain. I would've tried for Best Director though as I think this has a better chance at a nomination in that category but Best Picture, with 10 nominations, is a good play too.
They have no chance though, the Academy wouldn't dare.

Good luck. While Patty Jenkins did a wonderful job, the film didn't make feel it deserves both nominations for Best Film and Best Director. But hey, it's worth a shot, couldn't hurt.

Highly unlikely it will happen, but it would be fucking cool if it did! Now get started with your own Oscar campaign for Logan, Fox! There's a real chance there, and regardless of Marvel or DC, WB or Fox, having a comic book movie run for best picture would be amazing.
