'Justice League Dark' director Doug Liman exits project

on 'Justice League Dark' director Doug Liman exits project

Warner Bros. and DC have lost another director. This time it's Doug Liman, who was attached to the upcoming Justice League Dark movie.

Variety is citing scheduling conflicts as the reason why Liman is no longer directing Justice League Dark. Warner Bros. has already begun meeting with other directors.

Liman was a fan favorite, and told IGN late last year that he planned to “turn the comic book genre on its head” with Justice League Dark. Hopefully the next director's goals are just as ambitious.

    Sigh. WB rightfully has no faith in JL Dark. Outside of the small circle of the fans, these characters are not doing well.

    That's unfortunate. I like Doug Liman as a director and was excited to see his take, but oh well. I'm sure WB will find someone great to replace him

    ....I'm in a bit of an uncaring/shrug time mood after the Zack Synder news. It all feels a bit unimportant at the moment compared to sad news yesterday. I don't feel like dwelling on this stuff at the moment. As in dwelling on the slightly sucky irrelevant news. I'd rather just bask in the nice positive glow surrounding Wonder Woman at the moment. This isn't against you Chris, you're just reporting the news.

    *sighs* I am highly doubting now that I'll ever get to see Swamp Thing in all of his leafy glory. The animated Justice League Dark not only barely used him, it forgot that Swamp Thing is an Avatar of the Green and can't be killed by ripping the "corpse" of Alec Holland out of him.

    This is getting ridiculous. This is already the 3rd DCEU movie in less then two years that loses its director (4 if we count Snyders departure from JL). What the hell is WB doing that they just cant get a coherent plan together for a few years in advance ?

        A scheduling conflict is not much better reason. You'd think a studio that's seen so many directors walking out would've had the foresight to ensure there was no problem with existing agendas. Companies don't just shrug their shoulders when someone wants out of their contract for another job, unless it's their own fault.

      Scheduling conflicts happen. Meaning it has little to do with WB here.
      How would you know what they do and don't have faith in? The fact that WB are wanting to make a JLD movie says a lot.

    The movie had a script and a director for several months, with no casting or active movement. Hopefully WB continues to be patient. Start developing Wonder Woman 2, AFTER Wonder Woman proves itself at the box-office. Justice League Dark can become a THING, after Justice League performs well.

    I'm expecting David Ayer to officially exit Sirens, any day now. Apparently he's being possibly linked to the Scarface remake. Basically a divisive filmmaker, for what will no doubt be a divisive film. Ideally WB will replace Ayer with a hungry, less busy female director, and replace Liman with a less busy, hungry, and experienced horror director.

      The only reason why I would hate for Ayer to leave is because I know a lot of people didn't want him to sexualize the Sirens......even though those women use sex appeal to their advantage.

    I guess this movie is taking the 'Flash process of development': two directors, a finished script and an uncertain schedule all-round. The only thing 'Dark' hasn't adhered to is a cast so it wouldn't surprise me if, this whole time, they already had Constantine signed-up.

    I still fully expect this and Flash to come out in 2019 but Comic-Con will clear up a whole lot of things. I think all this is in anticipation of a bunch of big Hall-H announcements.

    Can the DCEU really "lose" a director for a movie that was never officially announced or put on their schedule? Warner has about a dozen projects up in the air, way too many for an announcement like that to matter.

    ...and it goes on. Weird, their schedules must have been deeply incommutable but this also mean that WB wants JLD to come out in a timely manner. See it like that.
    Loosing hired guns (Liman is already director No.2) isn´t as bad as loosing people who came to WB to build a movie from the ground up. All of these stayed so far.

        Because he was suppose to film Justice League Dark two years ago but Pacific Rim 2 was suppose to film at the same time. Del Toro picked Pacific Rim since he created that series.

    'Justice League Dark' did not even have a scheduled date, so the departure of Doug Liman is not so serious.
    DC/Warner, give Guillermo Del Toro another chance!!... or try Sam Raimi, who can do something really good if he combines superheroes + terror.

          Sure, once you fully establish the Batverse. That is like a phase 2 or 3 movie, not one you do this early.

    And how has that been working out for them?
    By that logic, Marvel has been doing pretty well regarding "long-term commitments & loyalty" (much better than WB/DC for sure). James Gunn will be back for Guardians 3 (so he'll probably be working with them for a total of 7 years, at least), the Russo Bros will be around 'till 2019, which makes them pretty "loyal" if you ask me (6 years working with Marvel at least), and many of their phase 1 directors were also producers on the Avengers and such. That doesn't seem to be such a well reasoned point of view, if you ask me. Liman simply had other projects to work on, since this one seems to be having difficulties getting off the ground.

      Del Toro wasn't fired Pacific Rim 2 got greenlit at Legendary and he had to choose between Justice League Dark and Pacific Rim 2 since they were scheduled to start filming at the same time. Del Toro chose Pacific Rim 2, then a few months later he announces that he is not directing Pacific Rim 2 anymore someone else is directing it.
