Doug Liman plans to "turn the comic book genre on its head" with Justice League Dark movie

In August it was reported that Doug Liman would direct Dark Universe, a Justice League Dark movie for Warner Bros. In a recent interview with IGN, Liman confirmed the news and explained that Warner Bros. hired him to do things that are "unconventional".

Here's an excerpt from the interview:

IGN: Justice League Dark/Dark Universe -- are you excited about working on that?
Doug Liman: Yeah, I mean first of all, I love those characters, and I love Warner Bros., and I love [producer] Scott Rudin, and it’s -- and you know, I get asked to come in and do things that are “unconventional.” If people want conventional, they don’t come to me. It’s why doing Invisible was like right up my alley -- because how can you be conventional when there aren’t even conventions that exist? And so you know when Warner Bros. wants to sort of turn the comic book genre on its head, they call me.

It sounds like Liman is up for the challenge, he went on to tell IGN that since this is his first comic book movie he's going to come up with some rules for himself to make sure he doesn't go down the same path that others have.     Edge of Tomorrow is excellent, and Bourne Identity is great (not as good as Supremacy and not even close to Ultimatum, though)... As for the rest, he has some good movies, and some very mediocre or flatout shitty ones...

      That's a pretty good explanation, you know, it never made sense to me how people all of a sudden started trashing Heath ledger's joker to defend Jared Leto's. Not comic accurate. So what? When something isn't comic accurate and sucks, logic would lead one to trash it. When something is comic accurate yet still sucks, ya trash it! And of course if something's comic accurate and good (Jk, Rdj) you praise it. But if something's not comic accurate yet good (Liev Sabertooth, 6' no mask Wolverine), and in the case of, hello, Heath Ledger as Joker, post humous Oscar winner of the best cbm ever, very very good, you forgive the inaccuracy.
      Or you don't and praise a literally pale shadow instead. And that's not even saying he's bad, which is an opinion, that's saying he broke the pattern of higher praise, from Caesar to jack to Heath to Damaged, and that is a scientific FACT.

      In your opinion. I love it how you state things as if they are total fact.
      Also if Ledger hadn't of died there's no way in hell a comic book film much less Ledger would have won a Oscar. He gave a great performance and Nolan gave The Joker a interesting motivation while not giving away the characters backstory which is better then what most comic writers I have seen do with the character in years however his performance is without a doubt the most overrated in a comic book film ever. The Joker is also the most overrated villain in comics, he is not even the most interesting villain in Batman's comics.
      So to carry on like Ayer and Leto destroyed something precious is ridiculous but hey at least it's gotten you off your insane Batman killing rants about BvS.

        I agree with LegendInMyMind. Heath Ledger's performance was legendary. Outside of ":The Dark Knight Trilogy," Christopher Reeve and the guys that played Loki and Magneto, can anyone name a Comic Book Movie (CBM) performance that is up there with Mr. Ledger's?
        If you think you can do better, then by all means, go out to Hollywood and do it.

      wrong. he didn't fuck up the joker/harley relationship. the studio interfered w/ the editing process. even in the deleted scenes, they show joker abusin' harley. he wasn't poorly conceived. he had the look of a modern day gangster. that's what he was in his original run. plus, if u read the graphic novel "joker", he was a gangster on there as well. leto did an awesome job as joker.

        he's been written as a gangster in the comics quite a few times. both in the early comics from the 40's & the "joker" graphic novel. in the latter, he was released from arkham & went after everyone w/ whom he gave control over gotham while he was locked up. hell, the outfit he was wearin' in the knife room in suicide came from that graphic novel.

        He was tho. For the majority of his DC tenure. What you are arguing for is a relatively new concept, brought to life by Miller, Nolan, and latest, Snyder. But he was a gangster, and he did care about having fun without involving Batman. I don't believe that having him care about things other than Batman limits him. Quite the contrary.
        Batman changed, as well. He used to be a loner, but now he is a family guy. You can argue, just like Joker did that it weakens him, but I think that shows invaluable growth. Then so what if Joker can love Harley in his own twisted way? Big deal.

    There is no more LN/manga left to adapt so he will need to a certain amount of ingenuity. The Godfather Part 2 was actually both a sequel and a prequel. It can be done.

  Two of Tom Cruises's last movies, Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow, are some of my favorites in the last few years.
  Edge of Tomorrow itself had to be one of the most creative and well executed sci-fi movies ever. The repeat viewing you get out of it is limitless, and remains enjoyable each and every time.
  I have 100% in Liman following that directorial job.

Speaking of turning the genre on its head, Marvel's Doctor Strange has pretty much done it. I saw it last Thursday, and my, when the reality bending stuff began, it was one the most incredible cinematic experience this year. It's the boldest, wildest, and ballsy movie Marvel Studio has ever done. Steve Ditko's incredible imagination has been brought to screen with aplomb.
Doctor Strange has set a REALLY HIGH bar for occult Superhero movies, and if Mr. Liman wants to top it, then he REALLY needs to let the JLD members to fully go all-out. No more ground-it-in-reality stuff, no more typical vague-magic-blast shit.

      I like both, always pay to see them in the cinema at least twice, so no DC v Marvel nonsense involved
      My point is, it may be bold, wild and ballsy for Disney, but visually (and some of the story) you've seen it all before, in The Matrix or Inception, they just don't have magic.
      But I do agree with Manuel Benvenuto about the constant jokes. I am starting to find them irritating. There was a brilliant, iconic moment, that gets turned into a comedy sketch. For people that don't read the comics, I imagine it's hugely entertaining, for me, it's frustrating... but they make huge amounts of money, so I can't see them changing anytime soon

        Oh ok, I was confused lol! So I read you're original post and I understood what you meant. I agree that these constant jokes in their movies are irritating, but at least they found their success formula, some people will hate for what I will say right now but... As a true fan of DC I would rather have a highly cliche, predictable and excessively funny cinematic universe like Marvel's right now then being at the situation the DCEU is at the moment - personally I haven't been happy with what we've been getting at all.

        Well, to me generic, good, faithful and full of entertainment movies > mediocre, badly written, filtered, pseudo-out of the box movies.
        Because if you stop to think about it all we have until now in the DCEU is Man of Steel, BvS, and SS, where almost any Marvel movie is more deep and intelligent than SS, where BvS is the exact same as Civil War but worse - sure, Superman dies in BvS and Marvel chickened when it was time to kill someone but for how long Superman is staying dead again??? - and where the only movie you could argue is less generic and more though provoking than Marvel movies is Man of Steel.
        But Marvel villains suck, right?! Well, God was a good villain, but after him we had a warped Lex Luthor with zero motivations made explicit in the films and the SS villain which was only better than Ironman's 3 Mandarin - barely. So I don't get how many of you keep bullying Marvel movies for being so generic if the DCEU isn't that different but with 1/8 of the success?

        MoS is decent but BvS, while you may enjoy, is a mess in terms of story. I agree Marvel is not doing anything special with their movies but that's my point! DC hasn't done anything special either like everyone who criticizes Marvel makes it seem, I hope we do it in the future, but for now, we only have 3 controversial movies with bad reception that didn't contribute to anything new and special to the genre.

        Every single view we have in our world is biased, the only reason I said "non biased" was because I wasn't expecting someone to come and correct me, but thanks, you're right! What I meant is that when we see our two favorite superheroes ever in the big screen for the first time we want it to work and to be good so bad we fool our own brains into loving it!
        Right when BvS came out I was everywhere defending the movie with everything I had, but as I watched JL the animated series and got to some of my old DC comics I realized that I didn't want to watch the JL movie - something I waited my whole life - if it was going to be the way BvS was, bad written, unfunny, with mischaracterizations and some serious problem with dialogues - Snyder himself stated that he though the idea of a guy with a big "S" on his chest talking to a guy dressed as a bat was ridiculous, and he is the one directing JL, perfect - I would rather not see it.
        So that's why I'm constantly complaining and harshly exposing my opinions around here, I'm afraid of what's to come you know? But at the same time I actually don't give a fu-ck about these reviews, o course they're a bit saddening, but I defended the movie when it had awful reviews and started bashing the movie when the UE came out and everyone started praising Snyder again.

        I'm not overly pleased with DC so far, (I did like BvS, but it was a mess), but I don't want the never ending one liners. The films don't age well. Once you stop laughing, you see how little else there is, going on. My favourite MCU film so far, is Winter Soldier, it had a good balance of real drama, mixed with occasional humour
        I'm really hoping they find that balance with Justice League

        You said the right word: balance. I'm really hoping JL finds balance as well, the cast is amazing and JL it's so iconic that is a success by itself, the only thing that worries me is Zack Snyder directing and storytelling. But as long as he holds back a bit on the unnecessary slow-mo, replaces some of the montages and panels with actual scenes and dialogue and stay away from the story - a guy who's known for not knowing how to work with original stories shouldn't have such a huge say on the story of the movie - I believe we can expect a great movie!

  i highly doubt that a mcu movie at this point can be anything more than disney comedy action mindless entertainment, the movie looked like it could be good but there are some spots with the always stupid, out of place, out of character, forced disney humour, the mcu is one huge wasted chance, you actually sound like a troll with the blind praise, the mcu is so wrong in so many levels, it barely resembles a marvel comic book

    Man, just stop and listen to yourself. The mcu is so successful that it influenced a lot of Marvel comics stories and characters that were downhill at the moment, Black Panther surpassed Batman for couple weeks after the release of Civil War on theaters just so you have an idea. If DC was exactly where Marvel is today, with such an exploding success in the hands of Disney, with great movies and faithful characters you would be in love with it. You may deny but let's be honest, if the mcu barely resembles the comics how is it that 90% of Marvel fans are in pure love with their cinematic universe?

There's a reason lots of young kids, girls (grandmas even), like those movies: Because it was catered to such audience, which is a larger crowd than the comic fans. Hence the $$$uccess! Duh! It's also another reason no one's ever really reacted harshly on the Mandarin's character treatment. They just don't know the comics! And alot of them act like they do after watching 6 mcu movies...them...your 90% who are so in love with those crappy, successful, kiddy movies.

        Ok, so let me fix what I said: 90% of comic book readers Marvel fans are in pure love with their cinematic universe. Go to any Marvel forum and community on the internet, if they're really Marvel fans you'll see how happy they are with the films they've been getting, and almost all of them will tell you how much they hated the way Mandarin was treated.     I like DCEU movies and have had my share of defending them from unfounded criticism, and the same goes for Marvel. My praise for Doctor Strange movie is genuine, as is my excitement and hope for a good Justice League Dark movie.
    Let's stop getting hung up on the bads and end up missing out the greats.

    I have to ask if you've watched it, cause it's definitely more than folding buildings. And yes, Marvel didn't invent it, but they've utilized the current visual effects technology to create what I thought isn't possible to be done in live-action believably. It's not what they did, it's how they did it.

    Yeah, he LOOKS like a great Constantine, but I've never seen him in action so I can't speak to that part. Being a big fan of the Moore/Bissette/Totleben run of Swamp Thing (Constantine's first appearance), I'm stuck with desperately wanting Sting in this movie. He might be too old now though, unfortunately.

    Hands down, Marvel doesn't come close. I wish Justice League was Zimmer's last comic book movie though, would like for him to compose the themes for the remaining JL members and then an ultimate theme just for the Justice League.

    Yes, I'm just not letting my inner fanboy talk. While many people say the MCU is for kids, that their stories are generic, cliche and that their villains suck these same people don't realize the DCEU hasn't done anything much different or special. BvS's villain Lex Luthor was as shitty and mischaracterized as Civil War's Zemo, but while Zemo had motivations after his family died in that accident in Europe Lex didn't have any motivation, and once you take a simple look you will see that everything's fall apart. Besides Luthor we had Doomsday that was created from Luthor's and Zod's DNA - now that makes sense!
    Along with their villains both BvS and Civil War's plots are almost the exact same, the only difference is that Civil War did amazing at the box office and loved by fans and critics, while BvS let down on the box office and was hated by half of the fans and most of the critics! You could argue that Superman died when Marvel chickened out of killing anyone in Civil War, but for how long is Superman staying dead again?
    Now Suicide Squad's villain is only better than Ironman 3 Mandarin and worse than any other Marvel villain. It's story and character development would also make it the worst movie of the DCEU if it was part of it - yes, worse than Thor - even though it had as many jokes as any Marvel movie, and was even more generic and cliche, adding nothing special and new to the comic book genre like many were expecting.
    Man of Steel is the best thing we got until now, a nice villain and a solid story, though it's nothing amazing and in the end some Marvel movies like Ironman and Winter Soldier end up being better, less generic and more deep. So my point is that the DCEU has fallen in the same genre cliches as the MCU the only difference is that Marvel movies until now had more dialogues and actual scenes, allowing better character development therefore allowing for better storytelling bringing enormous success to their cinematic universe while the DCEU has failed in almost every aspect of the game bringing 3 controversial, messy and disappointing stories.
    P.S: Everyone also talk about them damn one liners lol, but if you take a look every Batman and Superman dialogue in BvS is made of them: "Next time they shine your light in the sky, don't go to it", "The bat is dead, bury it", "Tell me, do you bleed? You will.", "Well, here I am", "You're not brave, man are brave", "Is she with you?", "I thought she was with you.", "Did you get the spear?" , "I've been a little busy" and some others I don't remember at the moment, but this was still probably 80 to 90% of the "dialogue" they had in their suits lol.

Guys i dont know what to think at this point.
the more i think about bvs the more i come to the conclusion that the movie is just not good.
Hated ss and i dont know what to do next. I´ve never been so fcking cautiousnly optimistic about a company. i want that dc/ wb have such great movies but the last movies truly scared me off a bit even tho iam a hardcore dc fan....

I really look forward to Enchantress (because it seems natural) in Justice League Dark and some actual shared-universe world-building.

He just said that Edge of Tomorrow 2 will revolutionise sequels! Before announcing that it's a prequel.. I'm guessing he likes to do big talk... All said, I really want dark universe to be good..
