Report: Billy Crudup drops out of 'The Flash' (update: nope!)

Update: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Billy Crudup has not dropped out of The Flash. Entertainment Weekly's original report is below.

The Flash is currently looking for a new director, and apparently it's going to need a new dad for Ezra Miller as well.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Billy Crudup, who was cast as Henry Allen, has dropped out of The Flash. Crudup has a cameo in Justice League and was featured in the latest trailer (screenshot above).

If this news is true, it's unclear how Warner Bros. will proceed. They could always just cut out his Justice League scene, as I'm sure it's a very minor role. They could even recast him and get a new actor to play Henry Allen during any reshoots that are planned. Or they could leave Crudup in Justice League and get a new actor for The Flash, but that seems like the less likely option to me.

Earlier this month while promoting his new movie Alien: Covenant, Crudup said that he didn't know when he was starting work on The Flash.

  Just to play devil's advocate: why? Marvel literally recast The Hulk and no one really batted an eye. I think we can handle The Flash's dad being recast without ruining anything.
  That being said, I agree. They have plenty of time to re-shoot the scene for continuity purposes if this is true.

  A source that, until a couple of years ago, was actually owned by TimeWarner and probably did their share of deliberate rumor-leaking. I believe they still have inside sources in WB so I'll trust what they say.
  And personally, I'm fine if we don't even see Henry Allen in The Flash. For that matter, it doesn't need to even be a time-travel movie as some have suggested. Very few Flash stories have focused on time or inter-dimensional travel; let's just have him bust up the Rogues Gallery and get busy with Iris for 2 hours.

        When Rick got attached the date was still set for 2018 and he just added on Seth's script. Now you have him gone with a page one rewrite and a release date of 2020 if these are Warner's candidates. So these changes are much bigger than before.

      Raimi said in an interview that he had no creative control with the third film like he did with the first and second. Sony forced him to include Venom.

      I'm not like that. X-Men: First Class is easily in my top 5 of superhero movie genre.
      I just don't like the Marvels coming from Disney. I liked all the Spideys (except Raimi's 3rd) but I liked the 2 TASM more than all of Raimi's takes.
      Why Disney? Because just look at GOTG2. "Damn, my dad wants to destroy the universe and he just told me he was the one killing my mom" and constructs a pacman. The jokes in their movies, and there are WAY TOO MUCH, are SO badly placed. The Disney movies are as tiring to watch as the Transformers (from the 2nd).

      It's not like this genre is full of great movies. Most are simply generic or mediocre.
      And his movies had identity and a voice, besides being well written, having great characters with actual motivation, and being just all around fun.
      What would you put over these movies, if you were to make such a list? I'm curious now.

        Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Watchmen, X-Men: First Class, ... They all had great characters, good character development and with actual motivation, especially in BvS, the most.
        BTW, I watched yesterday King Arthur (I know I told you somewhere, we had a Guy Ritchie discussion) and it was a great Guy Ritchie movie. Gave it a 85/100.
        I recommend this movie easily.

        Really? I went with some friends the other day and almost all of us found it to be really boring for the most part.
        BvS the most? Would have to disagree there. There are better super hero movies that could easily replace Watchmen and BvS on that list like X-Men 2, Days of Future Past, Logan and the first Iron Man.
        And in Man of Steel, what were the great characters and good character development besides Zod, and if you really stretch it a bit, Clark?
        I can't say there were any.

  I hope so. I like that actor and he'd be a great add-on to the movie. Maybe he left because he thought at first that it'd be a Zack Snyder movie, but then heard the news about WB looking for directors.. I don't know.

Goddamnit, Crudup and Ezra apart from being great actors literally LOOK like they could be father and son. Both of them have the prominent cheek bones, black hair, almond shaped eyes, etc. Crudup is also a dead ringer for Francis Manapul's New 52 Henry Allen illustrations. What a lost opportunity of a casting if he's really out and this isn't just some unsubstantiated rumor like the Justice League reshoots.

  Right? I never watched any Marvel movie at the theatre till Iron Man 3 so I had to catch up on DVD. So I watched the Incredible Hulk right before Avengers and I got confused because of the change of actor. I really liked Norton as Bruce.

Oh, bad news, but not too much, I think. Unfortunately, The Flash movie is suffering a lot with these drops. At least, about this situation with Crudup, they still have time to make some adjustments, like to cut his cameo in Justice League and to chose another actor to play Barry's dad. Of course he is a good actor, but there are others. Anyway, WB needs to put this movie back on track, to hire a good director and to move on with the whole thing.

If Raimi passed then I really hope we get Vaughn or Zemeckis. Constant bad news is not good for a movie and either of those choices will definitely bring back people's faith.

If the scene with Crudup is integral to the Flash and his dad, I say keep it, even if it is small. War Machine was recast in the MCU, and they can do the same here if needed.

I read the actual article and it doesn't seem like he is leaving. The only thing that said he was leaving was the title.
The actual article just seems like him saying he doesn't know when the movie will be made because they have to work around Ezra Miller's busy schedule.
Once they get that all worked out he would be happy to be a part of it.

This doesn't make any sense... After months, if not years of complaints, WB are finally listening and they are hiring amazing talent, both in front and behind the cameras. Surely he must have signed a multi-picture deal, and I simply cannot imagine he would be so disappointed with the recent (hugely positive) developments concerning the DCEU potential directors. I don't get it... I absolutely hate recasts, so it would be a shame to let him go.

I wish they'd just cut the role completely. I don't see why we need to see the exact same "dad in prison for killing my mom" crap that they already did on TV. Do something new and different and better with this Flash that sets it apart more than just doing the same story with better FX. It isn't like this is some long time story that is ingrained in Flash's history like Batman's parents die. This is a modern day invention that the character never really needed to begin with.
