Joss Whedon in final talks to write and direct Batgirl movie

Avengers director Joss Whedon is in final talks to write, direct, and produce a standalone Batgirl movie for Warner Bros., Variety reports.

No other producers are attached, but Variety says that Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros., is overseeing the project with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns.

Whedon was attached to a Wonder Woman project about 10 years ago, and has always expressed interest in directing a Batman movie. He even said he'd like to do a female Batman movie, and with Batgirl, it looks like he got his wish!

It looks like the DC Extended Universe is quickly becoming the Batman Extended Universe! Besides Batgirl, there's a Nightwing movie in development, along with The Batman, Gotham City Sirens, and Suicide Squad 2.

  Umm...Disney/Feige mandated a lot of the stuff in AOU and Batgirl is a completely different character than neighborhood Avengers toss up flirt Widow. Batgirl is right up Whedons alley actually.

    For me it's cool and all. But they first need to introduce the JL solo movies, instead of focusing on the Batman-verse. Like i said before, WB really need to come with a new slate for their upcoming movies, because right now, they just signing deals with no plan.

Anyone who remembers how Whedon handled Buffy The Vampire Slayer will know he can deliver on a strong, independent, quirky female lead.
If he's taking a similar route with this, then I can see Emma Stone being the best fit for Whedon's Batgirl.
Given his experience with female leads, Whedon can also provide assurance to actors that he knows how to do justice to female characters. Great news for DCEU if confirmed.

    Obviously the job should go to the best! I never argued gender privilege. But gender does help when you are doing difficult things like portraying feminine sexuality without objectivity. The point about Ayer was that women understand women better, not men, and in the case of GCS it would benefit having a good female filmmaker or writer to portray female sexuality - especially in light of stinging objectification criticisms of Ayer's work.
    Whedon's made it clear in his works that he understands female characters, and he's outspoken on women's rights. I think he'll do fine with a Batgirl that doesn't portray her sensuality, sexuality and seductive nature like the Sirens. So, it's a very different case.

      Ofc women understand women better... but they're not making a movie about "being a woman". They're making a movie about people, who happen to be women. Their gender hardly factors into the plot, if at all. So I still don't think it matters in the slightest. But to avoid a redundant and overblown conversation, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

If you're trying to use their sexuality and gender like Ayer tried to do, then give it to a good filmmaker who knows something about that - a woman!

        I couldn't disagree more. I don't think GCS will be any more or less a movie about "being a woman" than Avengers was a movie about "being men". The fact that they were men had absolutely nothing to do with the story at all. Why should that be any different with GCS? Again, when Harley bends over ONCE, that's "objectification"... when Thor, Superman, Batman, Cap, etc walk around half naked and show off their bodies repeatedly, that's completely normal. It's only "objectification" because you say so. And sexualization isn't inherently a bad thing, it is a part of her character, as I'm sure you are aware. And this isn't gender exclusive. That's just my stance on the matter.

        That's a false analogy. The Avengers weren't about "being men", nor did they trade on their overt masculinity as men, only as heroes, as evidence by the fact that Black Widow is an Avenger..
        GOTHAM CITY SIRENS literally trades on the sensuality, sexuality and seductive nature of the lead females. It's part of their character - you can't really do justice to them without accentuating their sexual behavior. That's 'them females' territory!

        That's exactly my point... The movie wasn't about that, it was about heroes (and yeah, Black Widow doesn't refute my argument at all). As for GCS, sexuality is not female exclusive. So I don't know what you're trying to prove here... that only women can be sexualized? Or that sexualization is a bad thing? Either way, I disagree. Using their sexuality in service of the characters (which is what a good female director would also do, should she be faithful to the source material) is not a bad thing, neither does that prove women would have it easier directing such a film.
        I can understand movies like Monster (directed by Patty Jenkins) which is very clearly a character study, or a movie about a female mind. That I can understand. But I really don't think GCS will be the same, but we'll see.

        Of course "sexuality is not female exclusive" - where did I say it was? I'm saying that because the GCS trade on their sexuality as an inherent part of their character, and because this is a DIFFERENT TYPE of sexuality than the sexuality of men (really not controversial), then someone who understands that, like a WOMAN, could do a better job in accentuating the sexuality of a WOMAN, NOT A MAN.
        It's not complicated, just common sense.

        I think if you want to do justice to Poison Ivy, Catwoman and Harley Quinn (especially together), their characters have to emphasize their very real sensual, sexual and seductive qualities. It's not about "the plot", it's about their story.

        Yeah for comicbooks, which pretty much everyone can agree do a grand job in objectifying. Films are much more ubiquitous, and therefore attract much greater levels of scrutiny, as we've seen recently.
        You can get away doing things in a comicbook with objectification that you cannot in films. The uproar around SUICIDE SQUAD testifies to that.

        Lol. My God man. Why the intensity over such a small thing? I've never met anyone more hostile to the notion that a woman is better able to portray the inherent sexuality of women than men. You're willing to complain and flame at length on the issue in a thread that's got NOTHING to do with this! I mean it's bewildering behavior.
        As I said, comicbook and film mediums are completely different, from their emphasis on story, tempo and flow, to the clear disparities in the amount of scripted words. Comicbooks also focus more on exaggerated visuals (and more objectification). Furthermore, if comicsbooks and films were similar, then Snyder would be the greatest filmmaker that ever lived.
        On top of that, as I've already said, films are subjected to greater scrutiny and higher standards because of their inclusiveness and ubiquity, especially in light of the recent backlash about the portrayal of women in films.
        Sure, male filmmakers can do a good job portraying womanhood, but I'd prefer a WOMAN who understands woman's sexuality, not a man. I won't apologize for that.
        I'm ending this debate, it's not relevant to the above thread, and truthfully I've found that by the second reply, you end up having the conversations really all by yourself.

        Pretty sure I agreed women are better at getting women, than men... But I don't understand why this is supposedly of such importance, they "have to" get a woman to direct. I would rather they get someone who's a good director, good writer, who's able to have great character development in films, than someone who just happens to understand female sexuality well... which isn't even the focus of the movie in the first place.

        Just my two cents but enjoyed this little discussion between you both. Just to play Devil's advocate, I think Seb made some great observations and I get your point of view as well mate. Jack Thorne you are also not wrong with your opinion it's just two different perspectives. Let's forget animosity between each other and all be happy a film is being made that will get a lot of fans happy. If you are skeptical then who those? It may just turn out something you really enjoy. I didn't think John Carter or Chappie or Edge of Tomorrow were going to be good but was pleasantly surprised.

        For me it just comes down to this: Rules can never be applied to individuals. That's it, nothing more. So while *broadly speaking* women are far more likely to understand the female mind than men, that does not mean that *every* woman alive understands female psychology better than *every* man, and vise versa.
        The reason why I am so absolutely against this is this: it doesn't matter how you spin it, or how you choose to define it, what Jack's proposing boils down to one thing: you privilege gender over talent. I'm not saying don't hire women. I'm saying hire the best person for the job. If that means in 99% of the cases, it happens to be women (because they are more likely to understand female psychology), then so be it. I'm happy, because they picked the best person for the job. But what Jack's proposing, INEVITABLY means that he would also choose a woman over the more qualified 1% of 'superior' (as in, more fit for the job) men. Why? Simply because the woman happens to have a vagina, and nothing more. And you can try to defend this by saying "well of course you always hire a *good* female director" but that doesn't refute the argument. What if that 1% is just *even* better? What then?
        For anyone who doesn't understand where I'm coming from, I'll just say this: Being a STEM student myself, and actually having done the research (which is not something a lot of people can truly say, even though they pretend otherwise), it is a statistical fact that men *are* better at spatial tasks, mathematical abilities and reasoning skills than women, *broadly speaking*. This is due to a variety of different reasons, but in short, it just comes down to biological dimorphism. (And before anyone says I'm a sexist, women are better at memorizing, emotional and facial recognition, etc so it goes both ways). Now, for centuries, men had said women simply "weren't capable" of maths. They "weren't as good as men". And you know what? Looking at averages, they were right (to a certain degree). Men are more likely to exceed in these fields than women. That's just a fact.
        Now imagine, that we would still *to this day* refuse women from doing what they want. Imagine they said "Yeah, but men are better at maths than you, so we want men". Broadly speaking yes, men tend to be better at it... but these gender "rules" can absolutely NEVER EVER be applied to individual people. What happens if a woman comes along with a 300+ IQ? That's basically what's wrong with Jack's entire argument.
        My solution is simple: Reward talent, not gender. So in the case of STEM, yes, that means men are more likely to win, but this is not unfair. Because they didn't win "because they were men", they won because they were the best. You see, gender is merely a correlation, not the causation. And in the case of female psychology, yes, I'm happy to admit women would most likely beat men 99% of the time... But not *all* of the time. Joss Whedon is that 1%. He is that exception, and he DESERVES this job, because he's the right person for the job. And it amazes me Jack has failed to notice this. Then there's the issue of hypocrisy, concerning "objectification", basically how it's a complete non-issue, but I won't get into that.
        Sorry for the long comment, but this is the best explanation I'm able to give to those interested.

      A female writer is writing GCS and it has been reported Whedon will most likely use Simones Batrgirl characterizations in the comics. Whedon will do just fine with Batgirl and much better suited for her than a one dimensional Widow in a bigger team film.

    No-one is going to do a superheroine movie with a youngish female star, directed by Joss Whedon, and expect it to be dark and on a similar mature level as other DCEU projects.
    It'll be lighter, but not too light.

  I think you give him control of the character and a strong DP and it will end up pretty strong. He's a fan and critic darling, which is what the DCEU needs.

    I'm not sure what it was exactly, but something about it felt like it was a made-for-tv movie..
    I haven't seen the second one though, I pretty much stopped watching all MCU movies after Winter Soldier, so I can't comment on it's cinematicness. But the first one was definitely lacking something.

  Yes, but you'll note that thus far GCS, Suicide Squad 2 and Nightwing are undated. Hell, at the moment Batman himself is undated. Granted The Flash won't make his current release date but still, they are clearly still working on him, and with Dwayne the Rock Johnson attached as Black Atom there's no way that's getting put on the shelf. I think at this point all of the movies they've mentioned will get a release (over a good 5 year span at least) so long as Wonder Woman and Aquaman perform.

Very excited about Whedon but I wish he was directing a different movie instead. Enough with the Bat related movies.

Great great news the DCEU will be a diverse beautiful cinematic experience I hope all these movies will be great and be successful, the fact that the DCEU has so many strong female characters will only make it more successful I look forward to what the future brings , DC has some of the best heroes and villains if WB can execute a great plan the DCEU can catch up to marvel and all the casting choices imo has been excellent. This is really really great news if Affleck stays on to play the Batman and we get some Flash news soon I will be so happy and I can't wait to build up my blu-ray collection

  Batgirl is white and I mean as far as more female characters getting shine and black actors as well as Hispanic look at suicide squad as an example , looks at JL as an example
